Quick Clean for Hair Tools
Giving purpose to an otherwise overlooked wall
Sometimes junk will build up on your hair tools. This is worse if you leave it on your counter when you spray products into your hair (with the over-spray just falling onto the tool) which is basically what I do every day.
Product build-up can also happen if you are styling your hair with a hot tool and you have product in your hair. It’s somewhat inevitable, but there is a really simple way to wipe it off in order to keep your tools in tip top shape!
When the iron is cool, simple wipe a cotton ball soaked with a bit of alcohol on the build up. If you have an area that is particularly thick, lay a slightly damp washcloth on top of the problem area shortly after you’ve turned off the tool. The heat that is remaining, and the moisture should loosen it up, and then it should wipe off pretty easily. You can also finish off that area with the alcohol soaked cotton ball.
A few tips:
- Don’t burn yourself.
- Don’t oversaturate the washcloth nor the cotton ball.
- Test a small area of the tool to make sure you won’t wipe away anything you don’t want to wipe away (like any of the finish/coating on the iron).
Not only does your iron look nice and fresh, but you lessen the risk of snagging your hair on any gritty texture left behind from product. This is such a fast way to clean up your tools, so take 5 minutes tonight and polish up your most loved irons!

Great info! What about round brushes? What’s the best way to clean them? Mine get gunked up with product.
I use shampoo to clean mine. Sometimes, I leave it soaking in the sink.
This is a great tip, I really should do this more often! What kind of alcohol should you be using on a styling tool and where would you get it? (I imagine you don’t mean rubbing vodka on my GHDs!)
I’m pretty sure she means rubbing alcohol, not the stuff you drink. 🙂 You can buy it at Target or any drug/grocery store.
Yes rubbing alcohol!
Great tips!
How do you clean your combs? I find that my comb is constantly getting product build up…is there any easy way to prevent this? Thanks!
soak it in a sink of water + shampoo for a few hours, then scrub it clean!
Yes, what about hair brushes and combs!
I always forget to clean my hot tools. It’s one of those things that always slips past me!
How about hair dryers? I find mine gets all dusty, and there’s no way to get it all out, thus burning out my dryer. You’d think they’d find a way to let people clean them out!
You can’t unscrew the back of the dryer? Usually there is a vent cover that you can rinse clean! Look for that!
Thanks! Also, those succulents in the photo there are too cute.
Thanks Kate! Super helpful because my irons are always filthy from my hair products.
Yes, can you suggest an easy way to clean brushes? Mine gets really built up with dry shampoo. Thanks!!
This is random but I saw this video on Facebook today {https://www.diggerlandusa.com/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Interest%20and%20Location%20Based&utm_campaign=JM%20-%20Dig%20Video} and immediately thought of you and your boys. Probably need to be older but still, thought I’d shoot it your way!
Ooh great reminder. Need to clean my curling iron and straightener…especially after coming back from youth camp and letting those girlies borrow my tools!
Love this! Such good tips 🙂
Thanks for the reminder – I have been meaning to clean my curling irons! Who knows what is growing on them…
I was JUST thinking about how to do this today. I have that same curling iron; the white is so beautiful, I want to keep it looking that way! Thanks for sharing this.
perfect tips thanks <3

Thank you for the tips! Cleaning my hair iron never crossed my mind before but this is definitely a wake up call!
Excellent use of “nor.” You don’t see it very often anymore. 🙂
This is such a great post, I never thought of this! http://www.indigoandmouse.blogspot.com
Would 99% alcohol works as well? or is that too strong?

What brand is this curling iron?
What about product build up on counter tops? What works to get it off?
I really appreciate the tip especially after I started spending more money for higher end tools. They don’t feel high end when they’re grungy.
