January Birchbox

My January Birchbox arrived and I have to say this was not one of my favorite boxes.

I also can finally join the “they gave me tea” club. Up unit this point I had never received tea (unless I’m forgetting some other time. . .) and I was happy about that. I don’t drink tea and I’d much rather have a beauty item than a food item.

However, tea was snuck into my box this month. It isn’t really a big deal, I just have to laugh because I can finally understand the disappointment!

Anyway, the only product I really like from this box is the Serge Normant dry conditioning spray. I’m sure you’ve heard of dry shampoo, and now they are making dry conditioner. With the latter, you obviously want to spray that closer to the ends of your hair than at your roots. And I like using it before I flat iron my hair. It helps the iron glide through really nicely!

The nail polish is a color that I won’t really wear and the mascara didn’t really impress me. The cleanser I have yet to try.

Overall I usually really love my birchboxes, so I can cut them some slack every once in awhile.

I received the velvet nail polish last month and to be honest I really dislike it. It makes my fingernails look hairy haha.

Me too!! It was so strange to put on, and my nails just looked hairy, not velvety.

I can imagine the disappointment…what’s tea got to do with beauty products!!

I got the same Birchbox this month. I thought the same thing… kind of underwhelming. The nail polish is way too “trendy” for me and the mascara didn’t impress me. I think they were trying to blow us away with mascara that smelled good, but I never really sat around thinking about how my mascara smelled.

I had my hubby sign me up for birch box on your reviews.told him it’s the only way he will surprise me with a gift. He’s pretty bad with secrets. I loved the dec box. Got some amazing chocolate with pop rocks in it! Since I’m new, I was surprised yours was totally different from mine. Thanks for the reviews.

I received tea in my box too! It wasn’t even fruit flavored tea, it was plain old green tea and english breakfast tea. This is now the 2nd month in a row I have received tea, and I am no thrilled at all. Hopefully I don’t receive any next month.

Funny, I never get anything that you get. I’m always sort of jealous of your boxes. Mine are always just so so but I’m such a beauty product junkie that I don’t want to cancel.

After receiving Birch Box for nearly two years, I stopped my subscription after last months box. Seems I have been disappointed in my boxes for the last 6 months or so. They started out sending stuff that was age appropriate for me (I’m 43) and then I started getting makeup and things I ended up giving my 22 year old daughter. Gold glitter eye shadow and bright pink lipstick doesn’t flatter these fine lines at all. LOL

Wow, I didn’t realize how different each box could be. Mine was the complete opposite of yours, and I loved it! One of my favorites so far.

I have only been subscribing for about 4 months but this month’s box was the best one I’ve had yet. I was really hoping to try the dry conditioner since I use dry shampoo pretty often. Over all mine was great though. I got some really pretty eye shadow to sample and ended up buying the palette. It came with 3 brushes so that was a bonus!

Ah I’m glad you got the dry conditioner too and commented on how you use it. I’m a wash my hair every day kind of girl so I wasn’t sure how much use I’d get out of it, but I’ll definitely give it a try next time I use the flat iron. Have you received the Serge Normant dry shampoo? I wasn’t a fan, and I don’t think I even finished the bottle before tossing it in the trash, so if you have, I’m curious what your thoughts were on it. Have a good day!

I agree completely! I did not receive the tea, though I would have preferred that over the mascara. It’s awful! I also received the nail polish in an odd shade I won’t wear and ended up giving it to a friend. The only thing I liked in the box was the dry conditioner and a little jar of Burt’s Bees moisturizer. Disappointed 🙁

I received almost the same box. I agree that the nail polish is something that I’d never wear and (insert big sigh) received tea again. I’m a huge Birchbox fan as well but haven’t used a lot of the products they’ve sent me lately. I recently signed up for Glossybox and cannot wait to review my first box.

Here’s hoping Birchbox turns things around…

I also received tea this month and I was not impressed. My box was different than yours but I was very disappointed with all the products. Usually I find at least one thing I like. Hopeful for a better box in February!

I was disappointed in this month’s box too! And I received completely different things than you! I didn’t get tea this time although I have gotten it in the past; i have also gotten granola bars and chocolate (which didn’t work out so well in the Arizona heat 🙁 Oh well). I don’t like getting the food. You have inspired me to try the Julep box and I am excited about that! Can’t wait to see your review on that one.

My box for January was OK, but nothing fantastic. I was impressed that I finally got a nail color that I think I would wear, and I guess it changes color with the sun. As we’re in the dead of winter, I’ll just have to wait a few months before actually trying it out. I haven’t really used anything from the box, except I did throw in this hand cream (Camille Beckman) into a purse I brought to a concert last weekend, and a friend said it made her hands feel greasy. The one cool thing I got in my box this month was an Under Armour workout headband. I am hoping to wear it to the gym, but had a weird shaped head where those things don’t stay without a lot of bobby pins. However, considering that they’re normal $10+ in store, I’ll take it!

Too bad we all can’t swap out samples with each other. I’d swap out that glitter nail polish for tea! And find a resource that will take all these cardboard boxes! I have about 20 of them stashed in my closet!

Your nail polish was better than mine! Mine was a velvet finish. Instead of dipping your nails in glitter, you dipped it in this weird little pot of flakes (for lack of a better description), and it was supposed to resemble velvet. Super weird. Also, it did not look like velvet at all, and the polish began to chip immediately after painting. Needless to say, January was not my favorite box either.

i agree with everyone’s comments. the mascara was meh, i didn’t receive the dry conditioner (but wish i did) and i honestly don’t recall any of the other samples because they were so underwhelming. It’s too bad Birchbox doesn’t let you leave feedback on your items so they can better tailor your next box. Fingers crossed for a killer Feb box!

I’ve received tea for four months in a row. Why..I have no idea. I even double-checked my birchbox profile to make sure I didn’t accidentally select some sort of “I love tea” option. I’m looking forward to when I don’t receive tea every month.

I also got tea (my second box in a tow, and I am not a tea drinker either) and the red glitter nail polish. I was super excited for the nail polish! I also got a coconut body cream, the Fekkai glossing creme, and a mineral eye shadow that is a bluish grey. Other than the tea, this was one of my better boxes. Does anyone know why we don’t get points for reviews anymore?

Reply

You still get points for reviews. You have to go to your box page first, then click on the product. If not it won’t bring you to the right review form.

I got the glitter version of the nailpolish. The actual nailpolish goes on nicely (mine is light pink/almost nude), but then I put the glitter on – ughh, no. It starting coming off when I washed my hands. Threw the glitter out.

My 15 year old daughter and I both receive a birch box each. We don’t mind the “foodie” items every so often -but it is real odd when my teenager gets antiaging “dark spot” cover up cream. Maybe she should be -but that is just not what she is concerned with right now. But we do get to swap items that somehow get in our boxes that just are not appropriate. I get the anit aging products and she gets the wild and crazy nailpolish-ha! Overall tho- we enjoy the boxes.

I no longer get Birchbox because there was too many disappointments but yea the tea thing really was not a good thing. I also remember getting that same brand hair item but in the dry shampoo and it was horrible! The worst dry shampoo I have ever used. Threw it away after about 5 uses because it was so bad. Hopefully they will get better as the year progresses! I still liked this post though!

Random question, but what do you do with all of you “unliked” items? Is there a Kate-beauty-products-cemetery somewhere in a closet in your house or do you pass the items along to friends or relatives? I bought a lip gloss once that made me look washed out (it was too silver) and ended up giving it to my sister. Turns out we have different base colors in our face and it looked great on her.

I liked most of my box (the underarmour hair band and dry conditioner, especially-I loved the Serge Normant hairspray I got awhile ago) but I actually laughed out loud when I read the instructions on the nail polish and it said I had to let it dry for about 20 minutes. I know that as soon as I dipped my nails in that glitter, there’d be a diaper change or something else ‘hands on’ that I had to do.

Ha! The funniest part is that I’m drinking one of the teas I received in my January Birchbox while reading your post! I too was disappointed by receiving tea, but at least I do like tea, so I’m drinking it! I joined Birchbox back in September after your rave reviews and while I like it, I gotta say my Dec. and Jan. boxes have been really disappointing. In fact, the sample I was most excited to receive this month (I saw what I was supposed to get in my box on my profile before the box actually arrived) wasn’t even in my box! I contacted them and they’re sending it to me though, so hopefully I’ll have it soon. I’m giving them February to redeem themselves, and if it’s another dud, I’ll just switch back to living vicariously through your boxes! 🙂

I receive Birchbox and Ipsy. I feel like it’s christmas every month when I receive my boxes! This month I received a couple of nice things out of both boxes but, like you, was not as impressed this time with either boxes. I have received that London tea before and I am excited to try it… I just haven’t yet. I have never received another food item and I’m kinda bummed. I see chocolate pretzels and caramel on Instagram and I’m jealous! I received in my Birchbox, the rock nail but it’s dark blue (almost black) with velvet…. I don’t see myself ever trying it. I also received Burt’s Bees Day Lotion, Juicy Couture perfume, Revealed eye shadow palette, & Klorane Dry Shampoo. In my Ipsy box, I received Alterna Anti Aging Dry Shampoo, Marula Oil, Absolute MakeUp Cleansing Tissues, Mica Tinted Lip Balm, Elizabeth Mott’s Smooth Shadow Pencil in Copper Penny.

My Birchbox was a total bummer this month. A crappy too tight neon workout headband, lipstick in matchbox form (lipstick on the tip of the ‘matches’ – cute packaging idea, but very skimpy on actual product), a teeny sample of perfumey lotion, and the one win: dry shampoo. Meh.

Reply
Emily B says · 01.25.14

I had the same tea and Nail Rock, mine was purple. Which makes the second time in 3 months I’ve gotten purple nail polish… and it isn’t a color I wear.

My January birch box also had the glitter polish which I actually do like, more for toenails though. It altogether was a good box (Juicy perfume sampler, eye shadow sampler, glossing cream for my hair, and burt’s bees day lotion). Probably the best one I’ve gotten so far! My first one had a chocolate pretzel snack….never gotten tea though. The food thing is a little weird!

“Tea” as some of you have quoted on here, may not be a beauty product for your face, but you’d be ignorant to think it has no benefits to your beautify. Tea rejuvenates the skin, detoxes, hydrates and adds a bit of energy because of all those things. So, why not add “tea” to your box? Give it a try with some honey when your throat is sore.
