I bobbed it

My husband came home from work last week and told me I was “grounded from the baby.” In other words, he demanded that I go do whatever I want and he was going to hang with David.

My first thought was, “I’m going to go cut my hair.”

And so I ran upstairs and got started.

I was so excited about cutting it I got a little overzealous and cut it about an inch shorter than I imagined it would be. But, as it turns out, I really love the length it is so I’m happy I took a little extra off.

If someone asked me what my signature cut would be, it would be this. It’s great for my texture, it flatters my face shape, and allows me to style it quickly. As much as I love styling my hair, I don’t love it when it takes a long time. So the bob allows me to spend about 20 minutes on it and I know it’s going to look right when I’m finished.

My hair didn’t get thicker during my pregnancy. Therefore, I’m not dealing with the hair loss that a lot of women deal with postpartum. My hair did, however, get really dry. So it felt great to chop off about 3 inches of dry, damaged ends.

The cut is a soft graduated bob. It’s not heavily graduated in the back, but there is some angle to the layering. The front length hits right at my collarbone and the back hits at the base of my neck.

The bangs are simply a long angled bang.

Questions about my hair color? Find my formula on my FAQ page.

If you would like a tutorial on how I styled it, watch this one. I know this is an old tutorial but there is absolutely nothing I do differently so I don’t feel the need to film a new tutorial.

In case you were wondering  I’m not going to film a tutorial showing how I cut my own hair–that should be left to professionals!

Just the sheer fact of losing 3 inches of “dead weight” off the bottom of my hair has lightened my load. My hair dries quicker and styles better. I feel fresh and uplifted too–tell me you’ve had a haircut that makes you feel that way too, right?

So cute! Post partum hair loss doesn’t start for me until 3 months out but your hair looks thick like mine so it didn’t affect much at all.

I got my hair cut exactly like this two weeks ago! I love it! But I worried i would not be able to do the beautiful styles you put in your blog. PLEASE do some more videos with the new look! I love it down but like different looks too. BTW the baby is beautiful! He is so blessed to have such a creative momma!

This looks very nice, but I’m too afraid to let it cut like this :/
The clue is that after more than 2 years I finally found the right cut for myself… and that is a nice cut á la my favourite actress (who thank god has fine straight hair too, so it works right for me!)

A few weeks ago I had my hair cut about three inches shorter and I was sooo happy because I need 10 minutes less for styling it πŸ˜‰

I am so impressed you did this on yourself! Looks fab. I had post partum hair loss, but it didn’t kick in until about 4 months post partum (ironically, about the same time I weaned my baby from the breast… not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I suspect the change in hormones might). Anyways, just prepare yourself it might still happen, but I sure hope it doesn’t!

Yes! I have a sort of ‘bobbish’ cut and am scheduled for a trim next week. My hair grows incredibly quickly and is super thick. I always feel like I’ve lost weight after a cut!

Super cute! It really does flatter you nicely. I love getting my haircut; it’s funny how much lighter and freer I feel afterwards. I had my haircut a week ago and my stylist put in some face framing (jawline) pieces so when the back is pulled up the front looks a little like a bob. It kinda makes me want to chop the rest off and lighten up! Haircuts are the ultimate decluttering! πŸ™‚

  16. Posted January 21, 2014

This is my favorite cut on you…..and just about anyone!

  17. Posted January 21, 2014

When you flat iron your hair, what temperature do you set it on? I’ve been trying to figure out how to get a smooth finish without damaging my hair.

  20. Posted January 21, 2014

I love your hair! If I ever feel like going blonde, I will try to go the same color as you. I enjoy the thought of that texture. Also, I love getting haircuts! I go roughly every 3 months to at least get the dead trimmed.. and it’s like therapy!

love love love it! the way you describe your hair texture is exactly how i’d describe mine, my hairstyle is super similar to this length (including angle) and we use several of the same products (including aquage), yet yours looks so.much.thicker!!!! jealousy overload!

  23. Posted January 21, 2014

Looks great! I just did something like this to my hair last week and I love it! It’s so easy to style in the mornings, and I was so sick of spending so much time drying my hair. I pretty much took in a bunch of pics of people with long asymmetrical bobs (including your last Clavicut) and said go for it… which was about 2-3 inches cut from the front, and 4-5 from the back (guesstimate, but a lot was lost). I only have layers in the back, but still feel polished in the front. Now, just to get your volume!

My hair didn’t get thicker either during pregnancy either, but I still got the horrible hair loss around 5 months. My little girl will be one on Wednesday and my hair is finally back to being the texture and thickness it was before pregnancy.

  28. Posted January 21, 2014

  29. Christy says
    Posted January 21, 2014

Yep, I didn’t start losing hair until 3.5 months pp and it just stopped at 8 months- it was disgustingly bad. Here’s hoping it doesn’t come for you. Love the new ‘do!

  30. Posted January 21, 2014

the weird thing about pregnancy hair is that it doesn’t actually grow thicker; it just stops falling out at the normal rate, and then all the falling-out-ness catches up sometime after the baby is born. it seems to coincide roughly with weaning, which might be why i’m seeing a lot of comments mentioning 3-6 months postpartum???

mine didn’t start either time until the boys completely weaned at 18months (they were, of course, primarily eating regular food by then and mostly just nursing at night, and they both self-weaned), and it had very little effect on my hair in terms of styling, texture, or whatever. it was mostly just gross to clean out the shower drain in the morning.

    love the new cut!

    • Posted January 21, 2014

Mine never had anything to do with weaning, I breastfed my kiddos till 15-18 months and my (crazy, insane) hair loss started at the 3-4 month mark with all of them. Even by my 3rd baby it still freaked me out to see handfulls of hair coming out on a daily basis. I think it’s one of the strangest things we go through due to pregnancy for sure! πŸ˜‰

    • Posted January 21, 2014

Amy that was exactly my experience. My hair is very long so it was pretty gross there for a bit. But it seemed to coincide with weaning.

I cut my hair just before she was born knowing it would be a while before I did anything to it again and now I’m itching to take off a few inches.

Quick question about PP hair loss and hair cuts… With my first two kids at the 4 month mark I lost a ton of hair, it was terrible. I’m three weeks PP with my third and anticipating the same awful amount of hair loss in the next few months. So is it better to get a hair cut before the hair loss or after? I was thinking after, but when it grows back in I’m always left with patches of hair that stick straight up :/

What is the difference between “stacked in the back” and layers? I’d love to know more about the layers in the back of your new cut. Love it! I am scheduled to get a haircut soon – my hair is super thick. I’m always nervous because when I ask for long layers, I always end up with the shortest layer being in the middle of the back of my head! I’m also a very low maintenance (meaning mommy of two thus have no time) kind of hair girl. Would love hair like yours, just a tad longer.

I can’t believe you can cut your own hair that well!! I’m jealous!!

I was warned about losing my hair PP and thought it wasn’t going to happen when I didn’t notice it at first. But then around 3 or 4 months PP it was NON-STOP. I avoided getting my hair cut during that time because I didn’t want my stylist to have to deal with all of the hair!!

When i wash my hair en then blow dry it, my hair just won’t do what i want. Even when i use the flat iron it just won’t go anyway that i like. Hairdressers told me i have very thin hair but plenty. I hope you can help me! Thanks!

(I am from Holland so don’t mind my english ;-))

Love it! The layers are spectacular and it flatters you.

I still cannot believe you cut your own hair! That is so impressive! I feel like most haircuts don’t look that good when someone else does them, let alone doing it yourself! I would love to have you cut my hair–I love the way you do layers!

this may have been mentioned already, but my hair didn’t fall out until months 3-6 or so.

  96. Posted January 23, 2014

Yeah…just wait until month 3-4 postpartum when you hormones start to balance out again and you will definitely see hair falling out!

I just got this haircut two days before you posted you cut your hair! I was so happy when I found out my favorite hair blogger cut her hair the same as me! But I can’t find a way to curl it! The back of my hair sits on nape of my neck and it won’t get a full spiral out of my 1″ curler. Any suggestions?

Your hair looks great! I need to get my styled really badly… My hair didn’t get thicker during pregnancy either… But started falling out when the babe was 3.5 months old… He’s 5 months now and my hair is still coming out at an alarming rate!

After 4 biological babies, I have had hair fall out anywhere from 3 months to 6 months, and it seems to last a long time. But it does get better after, once your body stabilizes out.

Kate, I love your cut and hair tutorials, but my bangs are long –cheek length– and I love them. Any advice on how to style longer bangs for updos? When they fall out it seems “too” messy (a bad, unstudied messy.) But when slicked back, they’re too severe.

Love that haircut! It’s so flattering on you and looks great with your texture.
Unfortunately I’m also in the club where I lost a TON of hair from about 3-6 months pp with my first. I’m pregnant again now and hoping it doesn’t happen again (although it’s totally worth it!)

  105. Posted January 28, 2014

Very cute and I’m excited to see some pics and tutorials for slightly-shorter-‘do. We have about the same length now and I’ve not been able to recreate some of your fun styles with my length (e.g. messy bun looked more like sad dinner roll). πŸ™‚

  106. Posted January 29, 2014

I wish I could be able to cut my hair by myself this way. And I wish my hairdresser could cut it the same!
    I’ m very impressed!

  107. Posted January 29, 2014

Could you do a tutorial on how you cut your bangs? I love the length and thickness!

My name is Rose Smith from united states of america. I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa in February this year on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is DR.MADURAI he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 3years. I really loved him, but his mother was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told him what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 7 days when i returned to Canada, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is [email protected]

Hi! I really want to do this haircut! This is going to sound nutty but I’ve always been blonde (not natural) and I’m about to go brunette. Do you think this cut would look as cute on a brunette? Sometimes I think cuts like this just look cute on blondes.. so weird I know
