I bobbed it

My husband came home from work last week and told me I was “grounded from the baby.” In other words, he demanded that I go do whatever I want and he was going to hang with David.

My first thought was, “I’m going to go cut my hair.”

And so I ran upstairs and got started.

I was so excited about cutting it I got a little overzealous and cut it about an inch shorter than I imagined it would be. But, as it turns out, I really love the length it is so I’m happy I took a little extra off.

 photo bob2.jpg

 photo bob3.jpg

 photo bob4.jpg

 photo bob6.jpg

If someone asked me what my signature cut would be, it would be this. It’s great for my texture, it flatters my face shape, and allows me to style it quickly. As much as I love styling my hair, I don’t love it when it takes a long time. So the bob allows me to spend about 20 minutes on it and I know it’s going to look right when I’m finished.

My hair didn’t get thicker during my pregnancy. Therefore, I’m not dealing with the hair loss that a lot of women deal with postpartum. My hair did, however, get really dry. So it felt great to chop off about 3 inches of dry, damaged ends.

The cut is a soft graduated bob. It’s not heavily graduated in the back, but there is some angle to the layering. The front length hits right at my collarbone and the back hits at the base of my neck.

The bangs are simply a long angled bang.

Questions about my hair color? Find my formula on my FAQ page.

If you would like a tutorial on how I styled it, watch this one. I know this is an old tutorial but there is absolutely nothing I do differently so I don’t feel the need to film a new tutorial.

In case you were wondering  I’m not going to film a tutorial showing how I cut my own hair–that should be left to professionals!

Just the sheer fact of losing 3 inches of “dead weight” off the bottom of my hair has lightened my load. My hair dries quicker and styles better. I feel fresh and uplifted too–tell me you’ve had a haircut that makes you feel that way too, right?

So cute! Post partum hair loss doesn’t start for me until 3 months out but your hair looks thick like mine so it didn’t affect much at all.

This looks very nice, but I’m too afraid to let it cut like this :/
The clue is that after more than 2 years I finally found the right cut for myself… and that is a nice cut á la my favourite actress (who thank god has fine straight hair too, so it works right for me!)

A few weeks ago I had my hair cut about three inches shorter and I was sooo happy because I need 10 minutes less for styling it 😉

I am so impressed you did this on yourself! Looks fab. I had post partum hair loss, but it didn’t kick in until about 4 months post partum (ironically, about the same time I weaned my baby from the breast… not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I suspect the change in hormones might). Anyways, just prepare yourself it might still happen, but I sure hope it doesn’t!

Super cute! It really does flatter you nicely. I love getting my haircut; it’s funny how much lighter and freer I feel afterwards. I had my haircut a week ago and my stylist put in some face framing (jawline) pieces so when the back is pulled up the front looks a little like a bob. It kinda makes me want to chop the rest off and lighten up! Haircuts are the ultimate decluttering! 🙂

Looks great! I just did something like this to my hair last week and I love it! It’s so easy to style in the mornings, and I was so sick of spending so much time drying my hair. I pretty much took in a bunch of pics of people with long asymmetrical bobs (including your last Clavicut) and said go for it… which was about 2-3 inches cut from the front, and 4-5 from the back (guesstimate, but a lot was lost). I only have layers in the back, but still feel polished in the front. Now, just to get your volume!

Yep, I didn’t start losing hair until 3.5 months pp and it just stopped at 8 months- it was disgustingly bad. Here’s hoping it doesn’t come for you. Love the new ‘do!

Reply
Amy Wilfong says · 01.21.14

the weird thing about pregnancy hair is that it doesn’t actually grow thicker; it just stops falling out at the normal rate, and then all the falling-out-ness catches up sometime after the baby is born. it seems to coincide roughly with weaning, which might be why i’m seeing a lot of comments mentioning 3-6 months postpartum???

mine didn’t start either time until the boys completely weaned at 18months (they were, of course, primarily eating regular food by then and mostly just nursing at night, and they both self-weaned), and it had very little effect on my hair in terms of styling, texture, or whatever. it was mostly just gross to clean out the shower drain in the morning.

love the new cut!

Reply
Sarah W. says · 01.21.14

Mine never had anything to do with weaning, I breastfed my kiddos till 15-18 months and my (crazy, insane) hair loss started at the 3-4 month mark with all of them. Even by my 3rd baby it still freaked me out to see handfulls of hair coming out on a daily basis. I think it’s one of the strangest things we go through due to pregnancy for sure! 😉

Reply
Mrs. Schaaf says · 01.21.14

Amy that was exactly my experience. My hair is very long so it was pretty gross there for a bit. But it seemed to coincide with weaning.

I didn’t think my hair had gotten thicker during my second pregnancy (baby is now 4+ months old) but now I’m pulling out handfuls every time I brush or wash it. I cut my hair just before she was born knowing it would be a while before I did anything to it again and now I’m itching to take off a few inches.

Quick question about PP hair loss and hair cuts… With my first two kids at the 4 month mark I lost a ton of hair, it was terrible. I’m three weeks PP with my third and anticipating the same awful amount of hair loss in the next few months. So is it better to get a hair cut before the hair loss or after? I was thinking after, but when it grows back in I’m always left with patches of hair that stick straight up :/

What is the difference between “stacked in the back” and layers? I’d love to know more about the layers in the back of your new cut. Love it! I am scheduled to get a haircut soon – my hair is super thick. I’m always nervous because when I ask for long layers, I always end up with the shortest layer being in the middle of the back of my head! I’m also a very low maintenance (meaning mommy of two thus have no time) kind of hair girl. Would love hair like yours, just a tad longer.

After 4 biological babies, I have had hair fall out anywhere from 3 months to 6 months, and it seems to last a long time. But it does get better after, once your body stabilizes out.

Kate, I love your cut and hair tutorials, but my bangs are long –cheek length– and I love them. Any advice on how to style longer bangs for updos? When they fall out it seems “too” messy (a bad, unstudied messy.) But when slicked back, they’re too severe.

Love that haircut! It’s so flattering on you and looks great with your texture.
Unfortunately I’m also in the club where I lost a TON of hair from about 3-6 months pp with my first. I’m pregnant again now and hoping it doesn’t happen again (although it’s totally worth it!)

Very cute and I’m excited to see some pics and tutorials for slightly-shorter-‘do. We have about the same length now and I’ve not been able to recreate some of your fun styles with my length (e.g. messy bun looked more like sad dinner roll). 🙂

My name is Sharon Johnson and i want to testify of the good work done by a faithful Dr uko a spell caster. in my life i never thought there is such thing as spiritual intercession. my problem started nine months back when the father of my kids started putting up some strange behavior, i never knew he was having an affair outside our matrimonial home. it dawn on me on that faithful day 19th of April 21st 4:23pm when he came to the house to pick his things that was when i knew that situation has gotten out of hand and he then told me he was quitting the marriage which i have built for over five years, i was confused and dumbfounded i called on family and friends but to no avail. two months after i started having problem with my kids welfare rent-age and all of it, i really went through hell. until a day i was browsing on the internet and i happen to meet a spell caster i never believed on this but i needed my man back so i gave the spell caster my problem at first i never trusted him so i was just doing it but you know a problem shared is half solved after a week my husband called me telling me that he his coming back home and that was all. now we are living happily and i still do contact him on this email:[email protected]

My name is Rose Smith from united states of america. I never believed in love spells or magic until i met this spell caster once when i went to Africa in February this year on a business summit. I meant a man who’s name is DR.MADURAI he is really powerful and could help cast spells to bring back one’s gone, lost, misbehaving lover and magic money spell or spell for a good job or luck spell .I’m now happy & a living testimony cos the man i had wanted to marry left me 3 weeks before our wedding and my life was upside down cos our relationship has been on for 3years. I really loved him, but his mother was against us and he had no good paying job. So when i met this spell caster, i told him what happened and explained the situation of things to him. At first i was undecided, skeptical and doubtful, but i just gave it a try. And in 7 days when i returned to Canada, my boyfriend (now husband) called me by himself and came to me apologizing that everything had been settled with his mom and family and he got a new job interview so we should get married. I didn’t believe it cos the spell caster only asked for my name and my boyfriends name and all i wanted him to do. Well we are happily married now and we are expecting our little kid, and my husband also got the new job and our lives became much better. His email is [email protected]

Hi! I really want to do this haircut! This is going to sound nutty but I’ve always been blonde (not natural) and I’m about to go brunette. Do you think this cut would look as cute on a brunette? Sometimes I think cuts like this just look cute on blondes.. so weird I know
