Soft Waves Hair Tutorial

next
Naked 2 Palette: Warm and Shimmery Eye
Now that my hair is much longer, I’ve gotten several requests for an updated hair curling tutorial. I’m also doing a little bit of a softer wave these days, so I’ll show you how to get this look in today’s video!

I’m going to use a 1 1/4 inch barrel curling iron from Babyliss. I still love Hot Tools brand as well! I’d say 1 1/4 is the smallest I’d go for a loose wave look. You can also turn the heat down on a curling iron that size ( or smaller ) to get a softer curl.

I used the Soft Swoop tutorial to style my bangs for this look, and you can click here for the tutorial!

I love doing soft waves with my hair! Especially in the heat and humidity of summer because Lord knows my hair won’t stay straight for the life of me in the summer.

Do you have any product in your hair to hold the curl?

Reply
Kate says · 09.02.13

I used Aquage Uplifting Foam ( I use that daily) and thats it!

Thank you Kate, I can’t wait to try this! Did you start with any products already in your hair? I don’t think mine would hold the curl as well as yours with nothing in it. I’m clueless on products!

Do you put it in while hair is wet? I have very similar hair to yours, but when I follow your curling techniques, mine doesn’t hold like yours does. Also, how do you get that slight lift at the back of your crown? I can’t get mine to stay?

Any recommendations for a good curling iron?

hi M and R .Before diving into the details of curling irons, you´ll need to determine your hair type. A person with fine curly hair needs a different curling iron then someone with thick coarse hair. When you know your hair type, finding the best for your hair is much easier. Personally I have infinite and like it.

I love this style! I have naturally curly hair. Would you recommend straightening my hair first? Or just blow drying?

Reply
Kate says · 09.02.13

try just blow drying it

Great tutorial, as always! This tutorial seems to be what I do to my hair on most days, as a curled style is the only way my long side-swept bangs look good (minus the fact that the side swoop never seems to work on my bangs – but I blame the cut). I’m debating cutting them… no patience (or have a good style) to grow them out. I think I may start separating my hair into 2 sections instead of the 3… may be quicker in the mornings. BTW – I started using the Oscar Blandi hair mousse daily, and what a difference that makes to my normally limp locks!

What is your opinion on Sleek shampoos? My hair used to be curly but 3 kids later its curly in spots but straight frizz mess in others. It straightens very easily with dryer but when I go to curl iti get tons of fly aways. I use Aragon oil by Big Sexy, aquage on roots on top and Kenra blow dry spray I have to use tons of serum after I curl to get hair to slick together and look nice. Would a sleek type shampoo help???? Thanks

i know you said you used aquage uplifting foam – is this to keep the frizzies out? when i try curling my hair it just ends up with too much frizz…doesn’t look neat enough. would this product help? (as well as maybe practicing on separating chunks of my hair the right way). just found this blog today and I LOVE it!

Whenever I let down my top layer, it always mixes in completely with the bottom layer and makes it hard to work with. I always have to keep the hair that I have not curled strictly separate from the part that is done. Is there any reason why this happens to me? Or am I missing something that you do to keep it from happening to your hair?

Legit thank god for you! I’ve been wearing hair extensions for YEARS and recently took them out because I’m suffering from Chronic Lyme Disease and I’m not physically able to take care of long hair any longer. I’ve had them in for so long I forgot hot to style short hair. That’s where your miraculous blog comes into play. I’m incredibly excited to try all your styles, and thank you so much for posting. As a person who is bedridden sick it helps to at least feel pretty. Thanks again and if you know anyone that is ill and can’t find answers shoot them over to my blog which goes into Lyme and how I deal. Thanks again xoxoxo http://www.illestoptimist.com

Hi Kate, I love the look but I’m doing something wrong. When you first slide the wand in, do you clamp then, or keep twisting and clamp when near the ends? I have paused the video so many times but can’t see what I’m doing wrong! Thank you, Sarah.

It’s just amazing how you have created such lovely curls with such a hair length. I had been looking for something like this from a long time, just because my boyfriend loves to see me in curls. Ever since I got a haircut, I couldn’t go out with curls and was just waited for them to grow back quickly. Because my hair length is just as yours and I did tried this technique and my boyfriend is again in love with me or say my curls.

How do you keep it looking like a more polished look? Your blog has helped me so much! i went from never curling my hair to curling it like every other day now! But mine always seems messy … some frizzes and fly a ways. I usually curl on the second day (dirty hair) after straightening on the first. I use Kenra Hairspray. On the first day after washing i use Sealed Ends before blow drying and the root lifter you use. Then on the second day I just use dry shampoo and hairspray. Any suggests on other products to use?

Kate, I love your tutorials. You’ve helped this hair-simpleton experiment with a bunch of up-dos I never would have been brave enough to attempt. Anyway, one of my many hair impairments is I cannot for the life of me properly operate a curling iron (or a flat iron for that matter, but I digress). I’ve tried a thousand times, and my hair just ends up not holding any curl, or it’s sticking out in weird places, or it looks crispy. I can, however, operate hot rollers. Is there a way to recreate your curling iron looks with hot rollers?

Reply
Jessica says · 10.01.15

Hi Kate – This is just a great blog! You do such an excellent job with your tutorials and explaining how to get the style right. I had tried the soft curls style multiple times with a very old, very cheap curling iron and the results were pathetic. I now have a Babyliss curling iron, which I purchased entirely based upon this tutorial!! I LOVE it. Money well spent. Using the new curling iron, my hair looked about as close to yours as I could have possibly hoped. I hope this doesn’t sound too weird or creepy but I had a fun dream and you were in it showing me how to do my hair … probably because I have tried so many styles after watching your tutorials and they’ve all turned out great with a little practice.
