Loose Waves
Utah Ski Trip Video
Your hair really is your best accessory. Great hair can make or break an outfit. So if you are looking to wear some loose waves in your hair, you are in the right place.
These aren’t the loosest or beach-iest waves ever. . .but once you get the concept down, you can tweak it however you need to to achieve even looser curls.

I added this product(Thanks to BirchBox for the discovery!) into the mix in this tutorial. Click here for more information!
As much as I would like to say “Look at my cute prop in my photo!” It’s not a prop. I actually needed an umbrella because it was raining. Which also loosened up my waves even more.
Oh and I could not possibly be more dull with my wardrobe choice. I realized I don’t even OWN color. So these photos are going to serve as a reminder for me to buy color!

Hi Kate!
I know what you mean about adding color to your wardrobe, I feel like I always buy black. Your dress is super cute! If you want to add color, a belt and jewelry will brighen up your outfit and make you not feel so “gray”.
Love your blog!!!
Great tutorial! You always have the best product recommendations. I get so overwhelmed when trying to select the right product. I tried the Aquage you use, and it was wonderful! I have tried to find something for texture, and have had no luck. I am convinced though, I need this texturizing spray now.
Thanks!

Hi Kate,
I am loving ur blog, like most I found it through pinterest. Through your blog I have learned we have so much alike!! I am a christian from central Illinois. Also am a cosmetologist, and have owned my own Salon (stylez hair studio) for just over a year!! And also was married May 2009. I also have a love for christ and a love for so many other neat things like you. Especially hair, it has always been my passion. It has been so fun stumbling upon your blog.
Hey Kate,
Even though your outfit wasn’t super colourful, that umbrella definitely brings out your eyes :). Thanks for the hair inspiration, as usual!
Alyssa
Cute hair, and dress!!
I discovered your blog through pinterest and am so glad I did! It’s so fun to learn more styling tips…
I love the umbrella (and of course your hair tutorial), where did you get it if I may ask?
Hi! I love, love, love your blog. I recently found it while I was catching up on my other blogs. I appreciate you taking the time to do the hair tutorials. They have helped me tremendously.
Gosh I freaking LOVE your blog but I can never, ever, EVER get my hair to look the same! I try so hard too! 🙁
I tagged you in my blog today too btw!

You’re hair is always fabulous! And the product you are using is pronounced Or-bay.
I love your blog! I have curly hair and your up dos work perfectly for me. The only thing that I don’t have luck are waves. I love this kind of loose wave or beach wave but how can I do them from curly hair?
So I watched all of your hair tutorials on Saturday, and I am in love. I curled my hair yesterday and it turned out perfect. Today its 1/2 up and I’ve gotten so many compliments, all thanks to you. (I also know how I will be doing my hair tomorrow now).
Beautiful! I found you via Pinterest and love your hair tutorials! Keep them up, they are MUCH appreciated! Thanks!
Hi Kate, I have recently stumbled across your blog and lovivng it! I did want to ask a quick question…..how do I get those pesky flyaways to lay down? I have straight, fine hair that I style with either a round brush, flat iron, or hot rollers. Oh and it is also cut in an angled bob style right above shoulders. No matter what I try I always have little hairs sticking up all over the top of my head. Please send me a quick email if you do not mind….helennaturally@gmail.com
I like this hair tutorial! Thanks for doing it. And I also think your bangs look really cute with this style. 🙂
geez, you make it look so easy… roughly 10 mins and pouff your done… takes me for ever… love your hair posts, would love to hear more about blow drying, bc I try up side down but it still doesnt look as good.
you always have the best tutorials! i could watch you do hair all day long..you make it look so easy! thanks for sharing this.
Hi Kate! Just wanted to let you know I tried this look today, and although it doesn’t look as fabulous as yours, I think it turned out pretty well! You can check out the results on my blog at the link below…
Cindy at Notes in the Key of Life
I’ve been avidly following your blog and tutorials since I discovered you on Pinterest a few months ago!
Blessings…
Hi Kate! What an inspiration you are to me. I’m pretty much a ‘no fuss’ kind of hairstyler when I do my hair. Never happy w/my results, but I am definitely going to give this a try. Wish me luck!
Thank you for sharing all your tips, I’m hooked on your blog!
Hi Kate
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Cindy from Notes in the Key of Life features you today on her blog and her hair was spectacular.

i LOVE oribe products! The salon I work at carries everything from they and they are the best hair products I’ve ever used! Great tutorial!
Hi Kate.
I love your hair tutorials but I was wondering do you or have you ever used a hair wand? I am trying to figure out if it is/would be a good investment?
Love it!!!
I just read your profile and see that you go to The Summit. I know where that is! Small world. I live about 45 mins from Raleigh.
this is great! just wondering if you know how to do a fishtail braid? I have been wanting to learn for forever and I wondered if you could do a tutorial?? thanks!!
The perfect mix of “fixed” and effortless – so pretty!
Hi Kate,
As a hairstylist myself, Ive been enjoying watching your tutorials and reading your blog in general. Just wondering, have you ever tried the balayage highlighting technique on your hair? I think it would look beautiful on you. Just a thought!
Keep up the awesome work and may God continue to bless your life!
Emiko
You have great hair tutorials, I swear I need like a whole day to go through your post and try out the styles.
I have decided that when I run out of the hair products I am using right now I am going to invest on the ones you mention.
This looks like a lot of fun to try! I have a question though: you say that the texturizing spray could be used as a dry shampoo — could a dry shampoo be used as a texturizing spray?
Thanks!
Love this and really want to try that texturizer! I’ve never tried one! I’m big on Biolage products and thats all I use with the exception of Nexus every now and then. Totally trying the texturizer!
Stumbled upon your blog yesterday via http://www.eatliverun.com/ and tried out the hair tutorial today! I love it and have gotten tons of compliments! It was super easy too. I do need the texturizer, though I think!
Hi Kate,
I am a new comer to your blog and love all the practical hair tutorials you post! I have gotten so many compliments on my hair after learning how to use a flat iron to curl it. love love love your ideas!
karyengelmann@gmail.com
I have been using some of your techniques and they work wonderfully. However, when I back comb or tease my hair…it never gets as big or crazy as yours does when you do it. I do not color my hair and thought maybe that is why (I also have to work hard to get it to hold curl). I have been using a root lifter to help some. Would you suggest the product you used today for texture or another one? Thanks for all of your great tutorials!!
Kristen
Love this!

I love this! This was my wedding hair, but all my curls were gone in secs when the rain took it. Atleast now I can try to make them myself!
In your video you say you’re using a 1″ curling iron – it looks bigger than the 1″ I have. Is it a 1-1/4″?? Just wondering.
Thanks.
I purchased all of the redken products you suggested at Ulta last weekend..at fantastic prices!!! LOVE the way my hair feels after just one week of using them. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Stopping by to tell you I am a fan. I started reading your blog and watching your tutorials. Suddenly I looked up and four hours had passed. Keep it up for those of us who spend a good chunk of the morning pleading with our hair to do something . . . anything?
I was burned out on blogs, but clicked on yours thru Saved by the Beach on FB. Love this tutorial. Love that you are informative and not all gushy and too cutesy. Took a moment to read your personal info, also. Good luck to you, keep up the great blog & tutorials like this. I checked out Oribe & Birchbox just from you. Thanks for the info.
P.S. You were smart to sit on the front row – hubby is a cutie! 😉
Okay so I have about the same length of hair as you and I am wanting to buy a new curler!:) what brand would you suggest? I was thinking hot tools but I’m not really sure…and what size would you suggest 1 1/4 or 1in
Thanks!:)
I love that dress- I’ve got it too! I just cut 7in off my hair and I need to start using your tutorials!
Hi Kate, so I have very very straight hair and everytime I try to put curls in my hair they are usually out within an hour. I have always wanted the wavy beach curls but can never keep them in. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep them in without “drenching” them in hairspray?
I absolutely love your blog! The hair tutorials have been very helpful because I used to only straighten my hair every day. Now I am able to do so many other things with my hair!

Hi Kate!
Totally love your blog! Thanks for posting awesome hair tutorials. I have a stacked bob right now that I’m gonna let grow out so I can do some more fun up-do’s, pony’s etc. Thanks for the “hair-spirations!”. I have naturally curly hair, but I do straighten 1-2x’s/week, so your “hair-torials” are providing lots of variety for me in the hair department. Thanks!
-Jen
Did you straighten your hair first?
Love you, you’re videos are excellent! Could or have you made some tutorials on how to curl using a clipless curling iron? They are so popular now, I bought one but am still struggling with it.
Kate,
First of all, like everyone else, I think your blog is awesome. I’ve gotten SOOO many ideas and try new ones each day. I used to do my hair naturally curly hair the same way most days (scrunched), so this has given me mucho inspiration 🙂 Question, do you use any sort of heat protectant? I know that flat irons, curling irons and hair dryers can do a lot of damage to the ends. I’m sure you can just snip yours right off, but for those of us who are terrified to end up with two different lengths and an unfixable mess, I was curious. I use Chi products for protection, but I just wondered if you had any recommendations that you might use yourself!
Thanks, and keep doing what you’re doing! 🙂
– Cassie
AH found my answer about the heat protectant in the FAQ (sorry lol). How often do you trim your ends?
You are amazing!!
Do you plan on doing any tutorials on how to curl hair or any type of hair styles using a curling wand?
♥♥♥ YOUR BLOG, KEEP GOING.
Where did you get your cute umbrella? I love it!
I really appreciated how you showed yourself curling your hair the whole time! Other tutorials I have seen curl a couple sections and say “ok, now I’ll curl the rest of my hair,” and they come back looking perfect! It was great seeing what your process was through the whole thing. Thanks!
Thank you for this tutorial! I just discovered your blog through Pinterest and am loving it. I have a question: I have naturally wavy/curly hair. Is there a way to get it into a loose wave like this without using the curling iron? (I have a feeling that the answer is no, but it never hurts to ask.) Thank you!
Just out of curiosity, what is the texture and thickness of your hair? I think it is super cute, but I have wavy thick thick hair that I blow out and straighten most days. I was just curious, because I’d love to do some of your ideas!
What eould you prefer to do if your hair was a little
bit shorter than your length and more layers for curling? i really want the beachy waiv look BUT my length and layers kind of prevent me from getting that look. please
help! I love your hairstyles!
Thanks. 🙂
i love your tips! and you seem like such a nice person too! keep up the great work and good luck with everything!
Elena
YOU ARE SUCH A PRO AT HOW YOU DO IT. WITH WORK MAYBE I CAN ACHIEVE SAME, ALTHOUGH I HAVE SHORTER LAYERS ON TOP AND IN BACK OF HAIR. GOOD JOB.
I love, love, LOVE your blog. It’s helped me a lot. I’m going to meet my boyfriend’s grandparents tomorrow and I’m totally using this style!
Don’t ever stop posting stuff like this!
Love that as you make more videos more of your personality is coming out. I work with 2 computers during the day so i set up your videos on one and work on the other. You are doing a great job, keep it up!
I’ve been wanting to do this style for years. I’m not very experienced with a curling iron but this worked amazingly! My hair is very thick and usually takes awhile to curl but using your method it only takes about 30 minutes and it turnes out perfect every time!
Great tutorial! I’m rather “challenged” when it comes to hair styling, but now I think I can do this. Does this work well with long hair?
Thank you Kate!!!!
I’m always struggled at doing my hair and that might have something to do with my job (a standard ponytail is the norm). But with your tutorials i now have more than two hair styles. My biggest problem (that you solved) is that all the other tutorials i have found haven’t been for my type of hair and my length. So thanks for being my hair twin (except mine is blond without coloring) and sharing your knowledge.
Love your hair styles! I have short hair and I am always trying to find cute new styles! Yours are adorable! Thank you!
The Rusty Pearl loves your site… I have a fb site too and a new blog.. would love for you to come along on this journey.. I love your page .. I want to share others sites too on my blog .. Love your hair color and style. Would you mind divulging what colors and foil technique you use on your hair?
You make this look so easy. I get to where I tease my hair and it always seems to ruin my curls. Any suggestions? I struggle with getting my hair to take curl and it definitely doesn’t take a second time. I wish I could make it look as good as you do!
I always enjoy watching the videos even when I have already done the style before and seen the video before. Keep them coming!

Thanks
you, your hair and your lovely dress ALL ADORABLE!!
thanks so much for sharing!
Hi! I know…Im way behind on keeping up with all of your blogs 🙂 I am not the best hair styler…although I am really trying to get better. I have found that whether I use my curling wand or 2 different size curling irons my curls always look the same. I tried the be achy waves today and they turned out to be big voluminous curls….focused at just the bottom!! Is it because I don’t have as many hair layers as you do? We have very similar lengths, but I feel like mine just lays there…the curl definition wasn’t there either like it is for you. Is my iron to hot or to cold, do I not use it long enough? I have a feeling none of this makes sense but appreciate any input you can provide!
Thank you!
Savannah
