Wrap Around French Braid
After receiving numerous comments from my readers asking if I can show a “full head” video of how to curl your hair with a curling iron, I finally made the video!
Warning: It’s 10 minutes long. 🙂
Here is a YouTube link!

Good luck!

I just found your blog and I love it!! I am one if those people who see cute hair styles and think “how do they do that?”. I have been growing out my hair and haveno idea how to fix it. Thank you so much for helping me!! Bethany.

Hey!
What kind of product do you put in your hair? And how do you get so much lift/ volume atyour roots! I dont have a very big head do i always find the top looks “flat” 🙁
I am 12 years old and I can only do like half an inch of hair for it to be curled. I have fine really pretty blonde hair so I don’t know what the problem is. Your probably dead by now but i’m not and I need help!!!
hi! Great news! I’m not dead! Check out my “setting curls” tutorial — that may be better for hair that doesn’t hold curl well.
Yay, thanks! I suck at hair stuff, so this is great for me to know. Saw you on Not Just a Housewife. I’d love for you to stop by and enter to win a stencil if you are interested.

Thanks for putting this up! This helps a lot with curling the back of my head 🙂
Hi Kate! My hair is super long and thick. my arms are ready to fall off after curling my whole head with a curling iron! Have you ever achieved this style using curlers? Are there any brands & tips for using curlers that you have?
Thanks! Amanda
Amanda: I haven’t ever done this with curlers but here is what I think you could do to get this look: put your hair up is curlers, then when you take them out, flat iron the ends a little bit to smooth them out so they aren’t as curly. Or you could even leave the ends out of the curlers to begin with. Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes!
Hi Kate! Everytime I use a curling iron, I have that horrid indentation from the iron. How do I avoid this?? It is what keeps me from curling my long hair. When I put the section in between the clip and the iron, it always comes out with that horrid indent.
You’re turning the curling iron the wrong way. When you clamp it band then twist it try twisting your iron the other way. (Around the barrel)
Alex Mandich
Thanks for the tute! I’ve been wanting to try this and was watching one of the stylists at the salon doing it the other day. I only wish i had as much hair as you! It looks beautiful! Now to get a big fat curling iron as I only have the old skool skinny one. 🙂
I was so excited to come upon your website! Thanks so much for teaching us how to do our hair. I love yours……..especially your bangs. I have a love/hate relationship with mine 🙂 How are your hair/bangs cut? Would you ever do a tutorial on how to style & even cut your own bangs?
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
nml: Thanks for reading! I’ve already got something in the works regarding my bangs. 🙂
Your blog makes me swoon…literally. I think I yelped in delight when I stumbled across your hair tutorials 🙂
2 questions for you:
1. What curling iron do you use?
2. Any tips for blow-drying your hair? I feel like that’s where the first signs of *magic* occur to see if you’re destined to have a good hair day (or not)!
Thanks!
Megan: I use a 1 inch Hot Tools Curling Iron. They are the best! And I blow dry upside down! I’ll have tip and tricks for that coming very soon!
Thanks for following!
Blow drying upside does give volume, but it makes you hair less shinny because you are raising the cuticle of your hair instead of smoothing it down, i would suggest to use a root lifting spay. Then “set” your roots with a blast of cold air from the dryer. Just a tip from an AVEDA stylist 🙂
If you blow dry in the direction of hair growth, though, it will be the same as blow drying right side up! I always recommend that–but thanks for the tip!
You are so beautiful…
Hi Kate! I really love all of your hair tutorials 🙂 I was really wondering WHERE I can buy a Hot Tools Curling Iron like the one that you use. Or even the purple one. I’ve looked at Sally’s but can’t find anything similar to it…
If you have an Ulta near you, they sell them. I got mine on eBay and I love it!
Did you use any products besides the hairspray?
Unknown: Yep: Aquage Uplifting Foam before I blow dry!
I found your post from pinterest and so happy I did. My hair is your length and never know what to do without except wear it straight- now I know! Thank you for posting this video!
Loved the video and you are just adorble. My problem has always been that my curls just don’t last. My hair looks great after I’ve curled and styled it, but a few hours later I do a hair check and they’ve fallen. Fastforward a couple hours after that, and my hair is just slightly wavy or almost completely straight. I have fine hair texture, but a lot of hair on my head. My hair is cut by a pro in long layers with bangs similar to yours. I’d love your advice!
Kate what size curling iron do you use? my 1 inch curling iron just died and I’m trying to decide what to get. I have fine hair, color treated, maybe 2 inches longer than yours. I’m loving the loose waive look but had trouble achieving it with my 1 inch iron (always ended up too ringlety). Would you suggest getting a bigger iron? or am I doing something wrong with the 1 inch?
I love your videos! Such great advice! Thanks for your help!
I love your tutorials! i was wondering if you could tell me what colors you use in your hair. I’m looking to add dimension to a clients hair and I love how yours looks. thanks!
Emily: I use a 1 inch Hot Tools Curling Iron. It’s wonderful! Try the 1 1/2 inch, though, if your curls are too tight. and maybe turn the heat setting down to medium. Hope this helps!
Taylor: I use Redken Up to 7 lightener, and a 9nb+7g shades EQ lowlight every 2-3 foils of lightener.
Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! This is great!
Hi Kate, thanks for the great tutorials! Can you describe how your hair is cut? Like is it all one length or slightly longer in front, layered or blunt or textured ends, etc? I like yours and need help telling my hairdresser how to cut it. Thanks, Elizabeth
Thank you so much for doing this! Can’t wait to see your “bangs” tutorial! That is the one thing that decides whether or not I’m going to have a “good hair day,” or a “bad!”
Hi! I came over from hi Sugarplum and I’m so thankful for this video! Loving your blog…I know I’ll be back.
abby
Great tutorial! I’m your newest follower!
Hi, I love your hair style tutorials sooo much!
Could you please tell me, what diameter your curling iron has?
I’m living in Germany and would like to get such an iron like you – but here we have a lot of irons with several diameter (25 mm, 32 mm etc.)
Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany,
Christina
What product do your recommend for heat treatment?? your hair looks SO healthy!!!!! Thanks!
Hi..just wondering what size your curing iron is? Just noticed the above person asked the same question 🙂 I would like to know in inches though. Also, recommendation on shine products for fine hair? Thank you!
I have super thick course hair and it is stick straight. I have no volume either because it’s so heavy. I saw you mentioned curlers to another person, are there any would suggest? Also any product I should use? I get so frustrated with it and just give up! Thanks! If not curlers what size curling iron?
The Herrmans: see my FAQ page. I don’t have a brand of curlers that I use, but I would imagine most any brand would work okay?? I’m just not sure! Sorry!
Just came across your blog and I’m loving it. I can’t wait to try some of these hair styles. I feel like I always have “blah” hair! Thanks so much 🙂
oooookay…so this is just PERFECT! Seriously I am so excited to go home and try this. I’ve been trying to figure this out for ages!
Thanks!
After 28 years I FINALLY know how to curl my hair!! Thanks for sharing!!
Ahh, Love this tutorial!! You do a great job at showing all the angles and steps involved!! Can’t wait to try this out!
~Amanda
Oh thank you so much for posting this! I have been trying to achieve this look for YEARS and never get it right. I just tried this and voila-perfect on the first try! Many Many thanks!!!!
Thank you so much for posting these tutorials. I cut a lot of hair off in January and got a bad haircut, so I had to go get it cut WAY shorter than I was going for. It’s finally growing and looks very much like your cut. I’ve never had trouble with my hair, but since it’s been growing I’ve absolutely hated it! I just couldn’t seem to fix it any way that I loved it. I watched your flat iron video this morning and tried it. It was easy and I got SO many compliments. Your tutorials are going to make this growing out process so much more bearable. I cannot thank you enough!
I just love the way you styled your hair in this video. I purchased a 1 1/4 hot tools iron this weekend, and my hair is to my shoulders. No matter how many times I’ve tried, I keep getting a huge crease in each section I attempt to curl. I think it’s from the clamp. Do you have any suggestions? I really want to learn how to do this! Thanks for any help you can send my way 🙂
I used to have this same problem- I figured out after watching Kate’s tutorial that I have been wrapping the curling iron the wrong way meaning instead of having the clamp on top and rotating the iron away from the face I would curl the hair towards the face. Basically I think I was in a sense going “against the grain” of the hair leading to the crease. Hope this helps- it made a huge difference in the ease and overall look of my curls 🙂
Anonymous: I’ll post a wrap around curl tutorial soon. That should help with crease issues!
I just stumbled across your blog on Pinterest, and I am so hooked. I have recently grown out my hair about to the tops of my breasts, and I am having the hardest time trying new things with it. I am so tired of the straight as a board hairstyle. I can’t wait to try this curled hairstyle!!
Thank you, Cassie
Is there any way you can post a more “detailed” tutorial about how to wrap hair around a curling iron? I have watched this tutorial at least 15 times now (don’t get me wrong, they are great!) and every time I practice this, I end up with creases, can’t tell if your ends should be inside the iron clamp and my curls are limp and only a little curly at the bottom. They definitely do not look like your stiff curls in the photos. I have tried hairspray and it hasn’t really helped much – it looks more like prom hair. I am hoping it will get better since I am pretty hair incompetent but this is stumping me.
I wonder if maybe you need more product in your hair (more than just hairspray) You need a little “oomph” in your hair so that it isn’t as soft – to get more stiff curls like Kate’s. Try a volumizing foam (I believe Kate uses Aquage) & pull it thru to ends.
As far as not getting the creases, you need to be a bit more smooth when letting the hair slide thru the clamp & barrel. Don’t let hair sit too long in one spot while sliding or you will get the creases. Hope this helps! 🙂
AshleySP: I’m working on that. My hair doesn’t do very well with that technique so it is difficult to show that. But I’m trying!
@AMANDA (You posted this your comment in aug. so you may not see this, but..) my hair is mid way down my back and very thick. I use curlers to get a base curl and then make adjustments with the curling iron. it saves a lot of time. 🙂
LOVE THIS BLOG! 🙂
Love ur blog 🙂 stumbled across it on Pinterest …I’ve always curled from the scalp slowly getting all the hair but I’ve nvr left the ends out ….what’s the purpose for leaving the ends out lol
Hi Kate- I got my haircut & colored last week (I’ve been wanting to ever since I found your blog about 3 weeks ago) I love it!!!! I’m wondering what size curling iron you’re using in this video? I bought a 1 in. Hot Tools & I love it – but I’m kind of wishing I would have gotten the 1 1/4 in. instead because my curls are tighter than I want them to be, but if I don’t leave the iron on them for at least 15-20 sec. they fall out mid-day.
Thanks – Love Love LOVE your blog! 🙂
@Kristin: stick with the 1inch. Just rake through the curls a bit more than you would naturally to soften them a bit! 🙂
Thank you thank you thank you! I have been trying to find cute ways to style my hair forever! I have found the blogs for little girls’ hair, but never for adults. I love your blog!
I read TONS of blogs on a daily basis… (SAHM, naptime is BLOG time! :)) and I absolutely LOVE yours. I haven’t figured out what to do with my hair… ever. (naturally blond, board straight, seriously does NOTHING…) so I am SO excited to try your tutorials… so inspiring! thanks a bunch!
Love this. I will be checking back frequently. I feel hair-impaired! But your blog gives me hope!
Love your blog! I was clueless as how to do anything with my straight, boring hair, but now I can’t wait to go out and buy a Hot Tools curling iron! yay! 🙂
I love it! I plan on trying this soon. I have super thick, wavy, and long hair…the kind that hairstylists usually give a double take to when I sit down. lol I’m hoping this works on mine. I usually give up because it takes so long to do it (it takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour to fully blow dry) but I’m determined to get it right one day!
I LOVE this blog! I don’t know how to style my hair very well and so this gives me great confidence to try something new. The best part is it doesn’t take you very long so hope I can get that good! I do use the Aquage seasalt, is that as good as the foam? Also I have really bad static hair, any recommendations? Thank you for taking your time for people like me and giving me some courage!
Hi Kate, I have super straight hair that is very soft and it does not hold a curl. I have a very hard time getting volume in my hair, it is about 3 inches past my shoulder. What kind of cut would you recommend?
@Stephanie C: the seasalt won’t do anything that the foam will do. Thats more for texture and the foam is for lift! And try Static Guard for help with static! 🙂
@anonymous: it’s hard for me to recommend that without seeing your hair! Sorry!
I just followed the steps in your tutorial and my hair looks very similar to yours – Yay!!!! Finally, I have beautiful wavy curls.
Thanks so much for posting this. I really had no idea how to use a curling iron.
I just tried to follow your tutorial, but I am so clumsy with the curling iron! I normally use hot rollers as my hair is longer than yours and very fine. A curling iron would be so much more convenient for traveling, though! Just a thought…maybe you could get a friend with long hair to sit for you in a new tutorial and show us “long-haired” people how to handle a curling iron!
Please tell me why I always seem to get a kink at the end of my hair? It doesn’t matter if I leave a bit out at the end like you said to or if I do the whole strand I still get a kink. How do I prevent this from happening? I have longer hair if that makes a difference it’s to the middle of my back
@Kelly~
make sure you always wrap your hair around the barrel before you wrap over the clamp. Never clamp the hair and go back over the clamp before wrapping around the barrel – you will always get a kink in your hair (bc you’re bending it). Not sure if this is what is happening, but wanted to offer that info in case it was 😉 good luck!
Hi Kate ! I love your hair tutorials, they are very helpful 🙂 I have a Hot Tools curling iron and I cannot get my hair to curl all the way. I always end up with the bottom half curly, but the upper part doesn’t hold curls ! What could I be doing wrong ?
LOVE the tutorials!!!!
I love this style and tried it!! It worked…but fell in about an hour. :-(. My hair doesn’t hold curl at all. I am going to try again and not comb it out (with my fingers) quite as much to see if that works.
2 questions…I don’t have bangs so I couldn’t get the section in the very front to look right. Any suggestions??
AND, WHERE can I find Aquage? I have looked evrywhr!!!!
Thx so much!! I have watched just about ALL your tutorials! You are helping me grow out my hair in style this time!!!
Thanks for this tutorial! You mentioned so many things that I hadn’t even thought about before and probably have been doing the wrong way for years. I am definitely going to try this one out!
I tried curing my hair like you said to do in this tutorial, but it came out looking flat and frizzy on top. I used an uplifting foam on my roots before blowdrying, but my hair just didn’t look right. I ended up teasing it at the crown and pulling it half back. Any suggestions? Could it be that I am not using the same kind of curing iron you are using?
I love this tutorial! I always wondered how to create waves in my hair. Never even thought to run my fingers through the curls.
Question-I can’t find Aquage at the local salons near me, so one salon reccomended Biomega (same company that makes Aquage) and I bought the Up All Night volumizer. Do you have any experience using Up All Night? I figured it was close since it was the same company.
Thanks!
@Megan: I haven’t tried it but let me know if it works for you!
@Anonymous: yes-the curling iron is a big help. Look for a Hot Tools curling iron!
As a Hair stylist I love Hot Tools curling irons, the 1.25″ is also a great size iron for looser curls.
Your blog is FANTASTIC! I have fine, blonde hair so I have to be careful with heating products. That said, I tried your advice on curling this style and the sides looked okay (a little frizzy, even after using Moroccan Oil) but the back…well, that was a mess. How the heck do you get back there?!
i came across your blog a few weeks ago, and have since then devoured every bit of it, and watched all your videos (some a few times!). i’ve never been good with hair, and actually seeing you style your hair and give tips, has helped me so much! i already went and found the aquage, which i love. needed a new curling iron, so i ordered the same one you use. loving the results, and can’t wait to try more of your styles! thanks so much for all that you share 🙂
I tried this out the other day and I got so many compliments on it! Never been good at curling my hair w/ an iron but it worked! I got these beautiful waves! I have long straight hair w/ a few layers and usually my curls fall flat w/ in the hour! Not this time and when I combed it out the next day it still looked great! Thanks for video! Will definately be trying more of your tips out!
How should our hair be to start this process?? I am a newbie with hair and tend to only be able to style it straight with a flat iron….other than that, i throw it up in a pony tail usually wet from the shower. If I were to try to curl it, should I straigten it first?? Should I have product in it to begin with?? PLEASE HELP ME!!! I want to look pretty with curly hair 🙂
I have curly thin hair that straightens easily with a salon quality straighter. My curls are not uniform and the underneath section is a lot tighter than the top and doesn’t look good left curly very often. I love the look of looser curls you get with a curling iron. Would you recommend straightening my hair first and then curling with an iron or just blowing it out and curling it. I know without seeing my hair its harder to say but any advice would be great. Thanks
Love your blog by the way!
Hey! I love your blog! My hair is medium length and very thin. After blow drying and straightening everyday it was a wreck, especially at the ends. I used the shampoo, conditioner and spray you suggested and noticed a huge difference! Thank you!
I do have a question though, when I try to curl my hair it never stays. It just falls right out and by right out I mean as soon as it comes out of the curling iron or straightener. sometimes I can get a little curl at the end. What can I do to get some hold! I use a lot of mouse and tried spraying with hairspray as I went!
I have curly hair. Should I straighten it first and then curl with an iron? Or just blow dry straight and then curl? Thanks!
Thank you for your great blog! You just saved me from chopping my hair off. I have lots of fine hair and I’ve always worn it short and I’m growing it out. It just lays flat and regardless of how good my haircut is I just can’t make it look good. I was ready to chop it off again. I bought some Aquage and styled my hair using your tutorial and I finally have a real live hairstyle! I’ve gotten so many compliments. I am willing to keep growing it now that I know how to make my hair look cute!
What about products? What do you use to hold curl real well?
Thanks so much for posting these tutorials! I’ve tried almost all of them and I’ve had so many compliments! But I always tell them to check out your blog!
One quick question… My hair is about the same length as yours but it doesn’t have any layering in it. I’m trying to grow it out but for now I’d like to have it somewhat styled about like yours. What should I tell my hairdresser?
Love this!! Thank you!! I have always had a hard time curling my hair!!! Now I know what to do!!!
Hi Kate. I have tried doing this a few times now and the problem I keep having is that some of my smaller layers fall out of the section when I’m trying to curl it. Is there any way to get around this?
Thanks
Kate, I have to tell you how excited I am to have found your blog! Oh how I wish I lived closer to you as I am in the “in between stylists” phase. I purchased my Hot Tools 1 1/4 in. Curling iron today. I played around with it all afternoon, my hair turned out great! I set up your video on my iPad and would stop, repeat several times. 🙂
Quick question: I have long bangs, my hair is below my shoulders length wise and my bangs are longer than chin length, what should I do with them? Can’t wait to try more styles! Thanks again!
i just tried this and it worked perfectly!!!
it was so cut!!
Ya.. I also tried and it’s the Awesome!
Works pretty vell..
Thanks for sharing this !
Followed your tutorial on Sunday and got TONS of comments on how well it turned out! Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. So easy to follow.
Hi Kate,
I absolutely love this hairstyle, i dont have a hot tools or a inch, mines either a 3/4 in or a 1/2 in, but im not sure. Ive had it forever from my grandma. Have any tips on doing with this size curling iron? Also it seems like every time i curl my hair i end up hating it because my hair is so fine it never looks as good as yours. Any suggestions??
Thank! I love your blog 🙂
Came over from Hollywood Housewife … love this tutorial! I have long hair and curl it almost every day, similarly but not exactly to what you’ve done here. Love it! Merry Christmas!
Hi Kate, My hair is naturally pretty thick and not curly or wavy but definitely not straight. It has a mind of its own. I usually straighten my hair before I curl it. is that necessary?
I just found your blog and love it. I have really soft hair and it never stays…what products do you suggest using?
Hi Kate,
I found your blog from Pinterest and love it! I tried this on my hair and got alot of compliments. Thanks for posting all the tutorials. My stylist does a great job with my cut but doesnt give alot of styling tips. You are a life saver!
Your curling iron looks larger than a 1″. Are you sure its a 1″?? Took mine out and it is smaller.
Hi, Kate. I have never been good at doing my hair, and someone clued me in to your tutorials. I’ve literally followed along step by step with this video, but my problem is all the same: I am still straight on top, and all my curls fall out literally before I finish going around my head.
I have tried to curl with my hair dirty, clean, I have held the curling iron until my arms are tingling, and it’s on the highest heat setting. What can I do to get my hair to take to curl so that it doesn’t fall out within 10 minutes?
Hi Kate! I looove your blog! I have hair just a little bit longer than yours that has no color on it, it is fine and straight as a board. When I first curl my hair it looks cute but before I am done spraying it my curl is gone. Should I be using more hairspray? Someone told me to spray my hair with hairspray before I curl it is that a good idea? And also, should I use something in my hair before I blow dry it? I know that coloring your hair makes it have more texture but are there other products out there that can give me texture?
I love your tips and videos. My question is I have VERY thick and course, natural curly hair. I cannot just blow dry and curl because of the frizz and bumps/waves and the roots; however, if I straighten and then try to curl my hair, it just falls out. Please advise how I could achieve this look with starting with frizzy/wavy hair
So I tried this before work this AM and I LOVE it! Only problem, by 2pm, almost all of the curls are gone. Any tips/product to help? My hair is thick and stick straight, maybe about 1/2 inch longer than yours in the video.
I know you have posted this somewhere before, but I can’t find it. You had a list of products you use on a daily basis..what are they?
Kate, PLEASE tell me….w/course naturally curly hair, what products would be best in this process..do I really need to blow dry w/aquage product or can I air dry then try this technique?? Also, what would be a good product to use for separation after curling considering the texture of my hair. I am excited to try this method to actually ‘reduce’ my uneven curls and get a more uniform appearance. I would really appreciate your comment. Thank you for your time. Pam
I just found you blog and I am in love! What size curling iron are you using in your video? I have naturally curly hair and I am excited to try curling my hair with a curling iron for a new look!!
Hello Dear!!
I cut my hair just like yours… And I love it. One thing… Do you know about Curl Formes? I bough last month and I am in love… But is not that good as yours…rsrs
I want to know if you used this produt and what you think about it?
just LUUUUV your hair.
thks! xoxo
I have really corse thick hair and when it dries it doesnt dry smooth and flat, would you recommend straighten it first? I have a really hard time making it look as neat
Thank you for this! I bought a new curling iron today (1 1/2″) and after watching this tutorial I tackled this look. Best curls I’ve done in a while, thanks again! 🙂
My hairdresser started selling Shielo’s Antioxidant Leave in Protectant spray a year ago and i decided to try it, though i was hesitant. I couldnt imagine that 1 product would actually do all that this one claimed to. I tried it for a week with no other styling products, and since that week i have been a believer! This product is amazing.
I have SUPER THICK curly hair that i blow dry straight and flat iron. The Shielo Antioxidant Spray leaves it feeling amazing. My hair is shiny, silky, soft and not damaged at all. I will not ever stop using this product. I have tried various styling products for years and have never had such amazing results. It really does do everything it claims. It’s also nice to only have to use 1 styling product as opposed to the 2,3, and sometimes even 4 that i was previously using.

I watched this last night and attempted it this morning and I LOVE how my hair turned out!!! Thank you!
Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but what size is the curling iron you use in the tutorial? Also I have fine hair, but a lot of it. It usually only hold curl fora short time. Do you have any tips for me? Love your blog and I’m going to start following it!!!
Kate! LOVE the tutorial, Any way you could get a long haired friend to sit and get her hair curled? that way us long haired people can learn :)-Lauren
Kate! After watching this video, I curled my hair. This is the first time my hair has held curls!! And I love it. My husband even like it. He made the comment without prompting! Thanks huge. Thanks sooo much!
I have super thin hair, and it never has held curl very well. I used to drench it with hair spray trying to get it to hold but then its so stiff. Any tips on how to make it hold this kind of curl better? I love the way your hair looks and am so jealous!
I just love you – thanks a million for all your tutorials!
thanks so much i saw you in pintrest! I love your site!
I think that you have helped a lot of woman feel and look beautiful all while helping us do it ourselves. So a big kuddos and thank you for your blog and your pinterest. I can say i now know how to curl my hair and make it look good. Thank you and God Bless
Jeanna
Hi Kate! I found ur blog through pinterest and I am loving it! My hair is shoulder length, layered, and THIN. It HATES curl. I was given a new Royale curling wand (the kind without the clip) for Christmas, but have no clue how to use it. Could u post a tutorial on how to use one? (p.s.- I’m 13 and my mom doesn’t like me using product, hairspray’s all I’ve got.)
Thank you for starting this blog, I love all the styles. It is nice to have somewhere to find cute styles for shorter hair!
I just found your blog and I absolutely love it!I have a question though- my hair is pretty short and rejects curls- would I still curl my hair like this or are there different ways you would recommend?
I just found this blog and absolutely love it! I can not wait to start trying all these hairstyles tomorrow! The braiding ones have really helped. I love braids but I was totally helpless until I saw this blog. It has been the best so far! Thank you for sharing this with us! Amanda Damiano
I do this style almost EVERY day now!! Thank you SOOO much for sharing!!!
I just love your hairstyles and how simple you make them. I have trouble with correctly placing bobby pins though. Any tips you can offer on which brand you buy and how to put them in so they stay put?
Thanks!
I found your blog via pinterest and LOVE it! Used the flat iron curl technique for the first time 2days ago and I have received so any compliments. Yesterday at work all the ladies wanted a tutorial! I directed them here of course!!! Never could get the hang of a curling iron, it just never turned out right, but the flat iron curls…PERFECT. Thanks you!
Kate what product do you put in your hair before you blow dry or before you curl?
Do you ever visit Louisiana…..LOL? I would love to have you cut, color, and style my hair. I took one of the pictures of your hair to my hairdresser, but she didn’t quite get it right. I was very disappointed. I’m trying to let my hair grow out and right now it’s just past my ears.
Hello, love your blog and tutorials. I’m going to get my hair done friday. I have baby fine hair but alot of it, I’ve been told. So I’m going to try your long graduated bob. But most of the products they use on my hair just weigh it down and I don’t get the crown height that I would like to have. Can you do a tutorial for crown height with the bob for people like me? Thanks 🙂
how do you curl with a curling wand ,I have tried and failed x
So I watched this video the other day and tried it out this morning! I love how my hair turned out! Thank you so much for teaching me how to curl it! I think I will be doing this a lot from now on 🙂
I just wanted to let you how much I love you blog especially your hair tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing and I hope you’ll continue to keep posting you great style ideas
Hi Kate,
Thank you SO much for your hair tutorials, they have literally changed my life! I have longer hair, but very straight and a lot of very fine hair. I bought all of the same products you use for the curling iron tutorial, aquage, kenra 25 and the hot tools curling iron. When I’m done it looks fabulous but my question is how can I keep the curl? Within a few hours it’s pretty much gone. If you could recommend anything I would really appreciate it. I just adore my new hair style and would love to have it last all day long!
Hi Kate,
I recently got a curling iron and I immediately took to pinterest and youtube for someone to show me how to get the look I want. Your tutorials are so helpful but I was elated when I went to your “about me” page. I was so thrilled that you are a Christian and that is the very first thing you mentioned about yourself. I just wanted to tell you I was very encouraged and grateful for all the women everyday who get to see the love of Christ in you.
Just saw your blog this morning and loving it! Do you prefer curling wands or curling iron with the clip? I have tried the wands and wasn’t impressed, however I think it was “user error” on my part. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful tips!
I LOVE LOVE your BLOG! I found Soooo many Diff ways to do my hair!! I tried about 5 of them last night on my hair and I succeced in all of them!! Which is exciting! I also curled my hair like you show in your video, and i have long thick hair..i just got a bigger barrell curling iron and it looked soooo good! Thank you for making this blog! I got a bunch of ideas! I also got the Revelon Lip butter! LOVE IT! 🙂
I love this blog! I can not wait to try some of these out this weekend!
I bought this curling iron, and i have thick hair and its long, is there an easier way to do it with longer hair?? and what is your temp set on?
I LOVE this blog , i really love your hair cut . Thinking about getting mine a little longer but like yours ! thanks for the hair ideas !
Hey I love ur vedios but the only prob I have is my hair are waist length and I would really appreciate if u could show some styles with longer length hair 🙂
I mean videos***
Your clients are really blessed to have you. You have such a gentle teaching method and a great virtue of patience, which shows through your videos. I’ve become a regular follower and I have benefitted a great deal from your tutorials. Coincidentally, I have also found that the styling tools I own really need an update. (or I’m just terrible at using a flat iron for anything other than straightening.) Now to just convince my husband how important they are…
I keep seeing your styles on Pinterest, and I keep pinning them, but I FINALLY took a moment to visit your site. I am so excited! I curl my hair all the time, but I’m never happy with it. Watched your tutorial this morning, and I swear this is the best my hair has EVER looked!!!
Thank you!
Katie D.
This is what I did to my hair and it came out very nice http://howtofixstuff.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-curl-your-hair.html
Hello!! I just found your blog! Will this technique work with chin length hair? I am trying so hard to get this look. I think I have similar hair texture as yours, and my hair is also colored. I am having trouble getting my hair to not look frizzy because I have terrible static. Do you have any tips? THANKS! 🙂 -Stephanie
Thanks so much for this! I just tried it and ended up with a Curly Sue look – yikes! My hair is naturally straight but holds curls really well… too well in this case. I used a 1″ iron. How can I make my curls more like relaxed waves? Should I use bigger sections of hair, or just leave the iron in for less time?
Hi Kate! I have long (about 4 inches below the shoulder), very fine, very straight hair. I have tried for years to get it to curl to no avail. Do you have any tips or product suggestions that would help me to get some texture with a curling iron? Thanks!
Hi Kate my name is Christina and I am a cosmetology student at Empire Beauty School in Indianapolis, Indiana. I am probably the biggest tomboy in my entire school. I have been slowly coming out of my girly shell but I still have issues styling my hair out. I am absolutely ecstatic that I ran across your blog on pinterest. I am going to start trying some of these things out from your tutorials. THANKS. I like the straight sexy smooth and protect when I am flat ironing my hair. Have you tried it. I have thick hair and I dont feel its heavy and it leaves a nice shine… just a thought.
Success story that you might appreciate: I found your blog in the fall of 2011 and fell in LOVE with your hair! I even wrote about how helpful your tutorials were and how much they gave me confidence in my own hair on my own blog! The first time I tried this particular, curling-your-hair-with-the-curling-iron tutorial on my own hair, it was a disaster. Seriously. I looked like a hot mess! (Who knows went wrong?!) But I kept practicing… Yesterday, I realized I curled my own hair perfectly in about 15 minutes flat — all thanks to you. 🙂 Thanks again for your great tutorials!
You are amazing! Thank you thank you thank you! You’re awesome for sharing your talents. You are so skilled and are a beautiful person not only on the outside but on the inside for sharing this with us! I will definitely refer back to this so many times.
Hi Kate- I was wondering if you have any tips on how to get a tighter curl on my crown. I just cut my hair, and now the hair at the very top will only curl at the bottom. Thanks!
Kate, what are your thoughts on the topstyler to curl hair with? I heard they used that on the Hunger Games hairstyles.
Thank you so much for this awesome blog! It’s so hard to find hair tutorials for girls with medium-length hair. Love these how-to’s!
Love, Love, Love your blog!
You should do a “whats in my beauty cabinet” video ie: what brand tools do you love.. what products do you use and recommend from shampoo to finishing spray 🙂 – I would love that!
hello! just wondering what size curling iron you used?!?!? i have the same length hair as you, and my curls always turn out too small and tight…. thanks!
I just found your blog and I am consumed with all of your wonderful tips and helpful tutorials. I just today curled my hair like you show in the tutorial and it is like I FINALLY know who to curl my hair and love it! I can’t thank you enough. Great job and wonderful teaching. You are an inspiration.
Hi Kate! I love all your tips!!! I practice late night (with my fiancé peeking his head in the door and asking, Kate?) 🙂 but…..I have very thick, “kinda” wavy hair. I have been using Rusk Wired and I like it! But it there a better “all over” kind of product that will give better hold. Cause like you said you love your hair after 20 minutes….but that’s when mine falls flat!! What do you suggest????
Is aquage the same as mousse?? and I LOVE your blog.
How do you dry your bangs??
Your blog is great! I saw that you are a professional hairstylist, that is awesome! Thanks for all of your great tips! I wanted to share a website with you for a hair curling product that I think you will love! It has saved me so much time. http://www.heatcap.com. It curls your hair in only a few minutes with no damage! I always loved just curling my hair with a curling iron, but I kept noticing split ends. The heat cap curls my hair in minutes with no split ends. I love it! I just wanted to pass the info along to you. Hope it helps! Thanks!
I love these hair tutorials! She makes it look sooo easy! I am definately hair challenged! These are super helpful but trying to do this I have probably burned my ear or finger with the curling iron about 5 times already and I have only tired curling the bottom half =( and her hard looks 100x better than mine does. Even with dumbed down instructions I still cant do it right! But thanks Kate for all of these awesome how-tos they are amazing and I can tell you really care about all your followers and thier hair =)
Ashley
Wow I cant spell today. I meant to say that Kate’s hair looks 100x better.
I am so inspired by your videos … I have tried several .. people always compliment me. I should start carrying your blog address in my wallet so I can share it.
Thanks for all the inspiration
Hi, you have really cute styles and so many to choose from that I would never think possible of being able to do with my hair because of the length of it, but your hair is just as long as mine. My aunt’s wedding is coming up and I love a couple of the styles I have seen on here that I’m trying to choose from to do for her wedding, but my problem is is I have never been able to curl my hair, every time I’ve tried or even gotten someone else to help me try the curls will not hold and they also don’t come out as bouncy and big as they do in your video before you run your fingers through them, mine always turn out looking flat and wavy instead of curly. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do to get my hair to curl right?
Hey Kate …… I love your videos and can’t wait to try them all lol …… Question I have watched several of your videos and noticed your color was a light blonde then it looked like a soft beige blonde…. I have been trying for years to get that beige blonde color …… Do you color your own hair or do you know what color your stylist uses to give you that color? Thanks for sharing your hair tips with all of us…… It is amazing to see the different styles you do with your hair and you make them look soooooo easy 😉 thanks again ! Trisha
Hey Kate, love your blog it’s SOOO helpful. My teacher girl friends and I have been having hair wars lately using all of your ideas….in a fun way of course. My hair WILL NOT take a curl. I purchased some of the products you have mentioned and hope to see a difference but wondered if there was any any ideas you had. My hair actually looks very similar to yours but just likes to be strain. Thanks! Jeniffer
I love your blog!!! But I have a question I’ve been trying to curl my hair an playing with it lately but when I go to rake my fingers threw it the curls go crazy, do you have any techniques to keep them soft and loose?? Thanks
Recently I’ve gotten my hair cut to about the same length as you have in this video (maybe a tad longer). I’ve been trying out some of your tutorials and I’m slowly learning to use a curling iron. Mostly I have always used a flat iron to do everything with my hair including curling. The main problem I’ve always had is that I’m not sure how to fix my hair once it’s curled. I can get the curls in but when I go to seperate the top and kinda move things around my curls immediately fall out. I am using the Aquage uplifting foam on my hair and it still doesn’t hold the style and give me great lift at the top. My hair is fairly thin, very straight, and has a silky texture. I’ve heard that I need more texture to my hair but I’m not sure how to get it. Any tips?
Just found you on Pinterest… and I’m so excited! One of my new initiatives is to style my hair differently on a daily basis! I naturally have very curly hair, but I pretty much wear it straight and down every day. You’ve given me so much inspiration.
I love your blog! Your hair styles are adorable, your makeup tutorials are insanely helpful, your personal style is so cute and trendy … you are cute as a button! I’m a Midwest girl, too. Thanks for being so awesome!
That’s such a cute idea! I’ve never seen a tutorial like this one before, but if I ever want to try something similar, I know where to look!..
I am so happy that I found this! Your video was soooo helpful! I have never been able to successfully curl my hair. So after watching this I thought- What the heck, I am about to go to bed then wash my hair in the morning. Now I may be sleeping sitting up so I don’t mess it up. I can’t wait to try out the other styles you have done!
I just watched this entire tutorial and I can’t wait to try it myself. What type of products should I put in my hair before blowdrying it if I want to curl it like this? Should I blow dry with a brush or just brush through with my fingers?
This is an amazing blog! It’s very helpful, and you explain things very well.
Hi Kate,
This has probably already been asked and answered, but what size curling iron are you using?
Thanks!
Alysson
Just stumbled across your blog and loving it, i have hair about 2inch below the shoulders, its very thick and heavy, when i did these curls by the time i’d got to the back the curls had dropped, by the time i’d finished the first curls i’d done were just about straight, any tips on how to keep the curls?
Thanks for the tutorial. I especially love all the up-do’s that you’ve shown. My hair is SOO thick and I just got a brazillian blowout to tame it. Some of your styles are difficult for thick hair! But I love them anyways and I really appreciate you showing us how to get some cute looks. Thanks.
I absolutely love your blog! I have hair that is the same lenghth, texture, and color as yours, however I never knew how to style it. Now I do! I’ve done several of the tutorials and they are so easy to follow and my hair comes out perfect everytime. I love my hair now thanks to you. You have a devoted new follower!!
How do I get to your fact page? Really love your style!
I love this style but have SUPER THICK shoulder length hair. Is this style even possible for someone with thick hair? I’d appreciate any tips! Thanks Kate!
Could you possibly do a tutorial of how to curl your hair using a curling wand? I am having the hardest time doing the back of my hair 🙁
My hair is finally long enough to do something to it and I’m trying to find different ways to wear it other than just straight!!
Thanks!
Hi Kate,
This blog has been super helpful! Yet, no matter what I do I can’t get my curls to look nearly as good as yours! Would hot rollers be easier? Any advice on how to use them?
Thanks!!
Kate
Hello! Thank you so much for your site, I absolutely love it! My hair is about the same length as yours, and I was getting frustrated thinking there was nothing I could do with my hair!
I have a question about this video… I tried this technique and I love the finished product, but unfortunately, after a couple of hours, the curl has fallen out to the point where only the bottom couple of inches are curled. I was wondering if you have any suggestions (technique? product?) for keeping that curl from falling out?
THANKS!
Michele

Hi Kate,
I know you don’t seem to answer comments on your blog post anymore, but I have to try! I tried this style this morning with my brand new Hot Tools curling iron and I completely failed!
* The curls don’t stay, almost as soon a I remove the curling iron
* I can’t seems to go near the head enough (altough I burned myself quite a lot), in the end, the curls start mid-hair, and every curl in the same form so it is just weird. Like an egg on top off my hair and then, the curls are starting at my ears and each and every one towards my scalp, it’s just wrong. –> My biggest problem!
* My hair is a little bit longer than my shoulders, and I can’t seems to turn the curling iron easily until all my hair is in it. At the end, my hair separates and I just can’t turn the curling iron anymore.
I so want to learn how to do this, I’m in love with your blog.
Everytime I try to curl my hair, I get the ugliest crimp marks from the clamp 🙁 any suggestions on how I can avoid that?
Do u have any advice on what to do if your hair dosnt curl at all I really want to have it curled for a wedding this weekend but it’s just falling flat every time I try
I love your blog! Do you have any advice on how to keep my hair to hold a curl when using a curling iron? it works fine with the straightener but i love the look of curling iron curls. Help? also what kind of layers do you have in your hair? (choppy, etc.)
What hairspray did you use?

How do you style your bangs? I never can get mine to look like that! Love this blog!
Thanks for this video! I tried curling my hair for the first time using your technique and it looks great! I definitely need to practice the back, but I’m pleased with the way it turned out the first time. Thanks again!!
I love this blog! Used this tutorial today – I am “hair-challenged” but this made it so easy! For my first time, my hair looks pretty fabulous. Only thing I added is that since I have really fine, straight hair that rarely holds curl I used some thermal protectant spray before each curl.
Thank you for making this so easy to follow! I can’t wait to try out more cute hairstyles!
I stumbled across your blog on Pinterest and now I look every day to see what you’ve shared! You have such a great, spunky personality. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us “hair novices”! I have NEVER been able to master using a curling iron, but I am gonna give it another go. You make it look so easy!
Hi Kate! You are so talented and I love your blog. I was curious as to how you would do this with thick wavy hair. I tried this technique a couple times but when I go to run my fingers through it, my curls do not get as defined as yours. I start with my hair wavy and try to curl it to make it smoother but my curls are not as pretty as yours. They sort of clump together. Also, I can’t get the volume you have. I have tried to dry my hair upside down but it gets huge! Any suggestions? Thanks for your help! You are a beautiful girl!
Hi Kate, Any tips on making bangs look great…like yours? 🙂 I have straight across bangs that I battle all the time.. Ive never tried the beautiful side bangs like you have I wouldnt know how to style them or make them look like yours.
Hi Kate,
I love this look but i’m not sure my hair will do this. I used to have an a-line bob and it’s grown out..it’s at that funky stage where it sits on the back of my neck and flips out and my front just barely sits on my shoulders. i’ve got a pretty important night coming up so would you have any suggestions on what i could do with it?
thanks, angela.
The hair curling iron information on this post is quite relevant and this is the think I like the most about this page
Kate, I love you and everything you do with your hair. I’m excited to try your techniques!! I have medium-fine hair, soft as a baby’s. I was wondering what kind of cut you have. Layers? Also, do you have any shampoo and conditioner reccomendations? I hear all the time that all shampoos have the same ingrediants, so it doesn’t matter what kind I use.
Hi Kate. I came across your blog and want to thank you for all your great videos. I have one question. I would love to get your haircut. How can I describe to my stylist? I cut my bangs myself. Thanks!
T for sharing all these cute hair styles! What product do you use in your hair daily, mine is straight and doesn’t have much volume.
Just did this to my hair and I’m in LOVE! Thank you so much
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I am the owner of a residential cleaning company and clean 10-12 houses a week myself plus have four girls that clean for me as well. I work hard, see clients and want to look cute and trendy but still be functional for all that hard scrubbing! I always put my hair in a standard (boring) ponytail and now I have options!!! You have saved my style-challenged soul!
How do you decide what inch barrel to get for your iron? I have medium/long length hair that is straight and thick. It is just personal preference or what? Thanks for the help!
thank you so much for this full curling iron tutorial! Love it!
I like your tutorials! i was wondering if you could tell me what colors you use in your hair. Thank you for sharing this video!
Thanks

Hi, I love your blog. You have such great ideas, thanks for sharing. If you take requests, could you write a post for those of us who have stick-straight, curl-resistant hair. As a person who is super-ignorant when it comes to hair, I could benefit from a post that starts from the pre-basics, how to dry, what products to use and how. It’s so frustrating to spend 20 minutes curling my hair only to have the curls essentially gone in an hour. Thanks!
Is your hair naturally straight? Mine is and I have a hard time keeping my hair curled, so I was wondering if you had any tips on how to keep it curled. Thanks!

I think that your perspective is deep, its just well thought out and really fantastic to see someone who knows how to put these thoughts down so well. Great job on this.

i am grateful today because my hair grow from 15 inches, to 32 inches, after the spell cast by dr raman, i now make $$ with my hair every week, because i normally cut it and sell it at the end of every week.if you need a long hair contact him with this email address ramansolutiontemple@gmail.com
Thank you! This tutorial finally made me realize that I’m holding the curling iron the wrong way! Whenever I would curl my hair the left side of my had would come out great but my right side would come out terrible! It wouldn’t curl it would only kink and leave creases, but it was because I had the clip facing my back. Now I know that the clip has to be facing the front of me! I curled my hair today and it came out much better! You are amazing!
What size curling iron do u use?

Thanks for putting this up! This helps a lot with curling. Well, there are multiple methods for gaining curl your hair – Pin curls, hot rollers, regular rollers, flexirods, curlformers, curling irons, sock curls.
Here are some natural styling methods you can try to gain natural curls-
• Try braiding your hair
• Create pin curls
• Try rag-curling your hair
• Pull your hair up in a bun
I’m 23 years old and I’ve never ever curled my hair with a curling iron. It took some serious patience but I was able to follow along with this video and I managed to curl my entire head of hair, and it looked good! Definitely a great video tutorial! Thanks so much for taking the time to teach all of us gals whom, for whatever reason, never learned to do it themselves!
I have wavy, very thick hair that is sort of layered due to having to get it thinned. I can put mousse in my hair and it is curly but not the kind of curly that I want. Do you have any recommendations for using a curling iron and also velcro rollers? thanks 😀
This is so informative- thanks! I recently cut my hair about this length after having a baby! It had been long all my life! So I’m trying to learn new styles! What size barrel do you use for this? Also, my hair is so fine and has no volume and doesn’t hold curl. What would you recommend? Thanks!
This is amazing! This blog has 100% helped me take my hair from “college athlete” to “young professional.” I tried this today on my hair and I actually got compliments on it!!
Do you know of any good products to fight frizz?? That’s my biggest problem… especially in rain or humidity! My hair is naturally curly so I feel like any time I “anger the beast” it just shoots up with frizz 🙁 Thanks!!!
How do you know what size curling iron is right for your hair? Does it go by length of hair or the size of the curl you prefer.
Hi, I want to try curling my hair because my friends told me that i will look good with it but i am afraid because it would be my first time curling my hair. It is good that i was able to find your blog because this is a good tip for first timers like me who want to curl their hair. I hope everything would turn out good after using the curling iron. Thank you for sharing!
You did an amazing job on your hair we love your tutorial! keep them coming!
I love your blog!! Does your hair have layers throughout? Can you tell me how your hair is cut? Thank you and please keep blogging!!
Nice tutorial… Your hair style is really amazing , I am going to get this look soon 🙂
Amazing! I don’t know you can do something like that. Thank you for the tutorial!
