I’ve always enjoyed makeup and cosmetics, (which is why I love my BirchBox subscription so much) so doing my makeup is an enjoyable process!
I have combination skin (which is dry in some parts, oily in others), random breakouts, dark & evil under eye circles, and very, very sad little eyelashes. So yes. I need makeup. Trust me.
I’m going to ask my sister to do a makeup tutorial too, since her makeup always looks good, and she has a more natural finish. She has great skin and amazing eyelashes. You won’t believe it.
Here is a rundown of what I use, and the order in which I use it.
What we got here: (from bottom left to bottom right in a rainbow shape)
1. Powder brush from Bare Escentuals
2. Blush brush from costco
3. Bare Escentuals Prime Time eyelid primer
4. Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum
5. Mac eyeshadow in Wedge
6. Mac eyeshadow in Vanilla
7. Bare Escentuals eyeshadow in Java
8. Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum (lots of regenerating going on)
9. Sephora Daily Brush Cleaner
10. Mac Studio Fix Fluid in NC15
11. Mac Pro Longwear concealer in NW 15
12. Mac Studio Fix Powder in N4
13. OH! my blush isn’t there. It’s Bare Escentuals Golden Gate. A lip stick pic is all I could find!
14. Makeup Forever eyeliner in black
15. Cover Girl Eyebrow pencil in dark blonde
16. an assortment of shadow brushes, a few from Bare Escentuals
17. Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara in Black
18. Sephora lash curler
19. Tweezerman tweezers
20. (also not pictured) Sonia Kashuk Soft Pink Lipstick.
1. Rub a pea size of Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum under eyes.
2. Rub a smaller than pea size dot of BareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid primer on lids.
3. Swipe medium brush across power, and dust on eye lids (this prevents the eyelid primer from being too intense and a bit more forgiving).
4. Brush Mac eyeshadow in Wedge across entire lid.
5. With an angled shadow brush, press BareMinerals Java eyeshadow into outer part of the lid, and slightly up into crease.
6. Using fingers, blend the “line” of shadow above your crease away so it’s softer.
7. Using a eyeshadow brush dedicated to lighter shadows, press and swipe Mac eyeshadow in Vanilla on brow bone, and inner & outer corners of eyes.
8. Add a bit of eyeliner from center of lid and out in Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes in black.
9. Curl lashes and apply one coat of Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara in black.
10. Tap a nickel size amount of Mac Studio Fix Fluid foundation into fingers and rub on face, blending around jawline.
11. Squeeze pea size amount of Mac Pro Longwear Concealer (best under eye Concealer ever) under eyes and spread until smooth.
12. Dust a light amount of Mac Studio Fix powder across face with medium brush.
13. With a blush brush, swirl in BareMinerals Golden Gate blush and apply to apples of cheeks, temples, finishing with a swipe across forehead and chin (think of blush, and bronzer, as where the sun would hit your face first. Accent those parts).
14. Curl lashes and apply second coat of mascara.
15. Using a flat eyeshadow brush, press BareMinerals Java eyeshadow on bottom lash line.
16. Fill in brows with eye brow pencil by Cover Girl in Soft Blonde.
17. Final eyelash curl, and apply mascara to the bottom lashes. 2 coats usually do it!
18. Apply Sonia Kashuk Soft Pink Lipstick.
All in all I would say I like to have 10-12 minutes to do my makeup. That is when my hair is drying in the towel anyway, so I’m killing two birds with one stone!

Love this look – I’m a huge MAC fan as well. Yes, it costs more, but lasts much longer and it has staying power you can’t beat. I also have the Urban Decay Naked Palette and it could easily be the only palette anyone would need. So versatile!
I work at Ulta and I have to say, the Urban Decay Naked Palette is awesome!! I wear mostly MAC but I also love Benefit, Too Faced and Urban Decay
I love this, perfect for the rest of us! Thanks for sharing, you are one beautiful gal!
Your makeup looks amazing! I wish I could do mine that good. I just don’t take the time in the morning. I am going to try harder though! Cuz you look flawless!!
first you’re a hair guru, now you’re a make-up guru.. what will you surprise us with next?! (I’m already excited to find out!) I’ve been looking for a conclearer and might try the MAC brand.
Thank you so much for the great post!
What a great tutorial! 🙂 Thank you for sharing with us! I wanted to ask… Maybe I missed it, but what is your lip wear? I really like the color and just wondered. Thanks!!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing your tips!
Like Genelle said, you are a hair guru. Since finding your blog I have been using more product in my hair and taking a bit more time to do it and it has made a huge difference in how my hair looks. I love it.And your make-up always looks great too. I am so torn because I have a blog (and philosophy) to try to use more natural products with less chemicals, but then I read your blog and I want to use all the products. I don’t think I can go without but maybe I can find more organic products to use. I will not give up my Diorshow mascara though!
Have you ever tried YSL Touche Eclat concealer? I LOVE it. I definitely want to try the MAC though since it is longwear!
I don’t know that your makeup works wonders because you didn’t give us a real before shot! My husband hates when I wear makeup and and prefers my hair in a pony and sometimes he is the only adult I see during the day (5 kids) so taking the time to do it feels pointless 🙁
Gorgeous. You look very much like Kristen Bell to me (hopefully that’s a compliment to you, I think she’s beautiful).
I LOVE LOVE LOVE CG Lash Blast!
Love the blog! I used you for a post today, hope you don’t mind!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE CG Lash Blast!
Thank you for the tutorial and listing all the products. What a flawless look..perfect for your coloring.
Great makeup tips…. but really? The best thing was learning about BirchBox! I thought I knew everything I could possibly know about that stuff…what a great find!!!
You are cute as a button no matter what! The make-up tips are great though. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Kate!! Just wanted to let you know I curled my hair using your tutorial and just posted about it on my blog!! http://www.livingstonlove.blogspot.com I did okay my first go round and can’t wait to try it again!!! Thank you for sharing all your skills with us! You are awesome!!!!
I have tiny eyelashes as well! I have to put a million coats of mascara just to have them noticed. haha
I LOVE this post. Thanks for sharing you routine. I’ve been in such a make-up rut lately and this was just the inspiration I needed to try something new. Thank you!
I love this makeup post! I love the step by step tutorial and the different types that you use. Can’t wait to try some of these!
I love your makeup! Thank you for the link to Birchbox. I love makeup and had no clue this site existed!
I love your blog so much! Thanks for all the tutorials. You are a very beautiful woman! I was wondering if you could do a post on how to wear scarves. This may sound strange, but I love them on other people. I have just been a little hesitant to wear any because I am unsure of how to wear them. I am afraid I will have a big fashion fail! Thanks so much!
Do you think Birchbox is worth the money? Do you get decent sized samples? What are some examples of stuff you got in the past?
These are some great tips! Thanks! I just noticed your post from the summer about the Bare Essentials Pretty Amazing Lipcolor. This post you use a different lipstick I love what you said about the Bare Essentials one but haven’t tried it. How does it compare to the one you use in tthis post?
Jody: search Birchbox in my blog search bar (on the right) To see examples! I love it. Everything is trial/sample size but it’s a great way to learn about new products!
Krissie: I still love the Pretty Amazing lip color but I like thr sonia kashuk soft pink for fall. The Pretty Amazing lipcolor is really long lasting and the Sonia kashuk is just regular lipstick!
Lorie: That sounds like a good idea! I’ll keep that in mind!
so so SO cute! I’m about to go buy those MAC eyeshadows you use! I figure it will work well on me as I have blue eyes and similar skin tone as you. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next! Oh and your sister needs to get her make-up tutorial on her blog A-SAP! I can’t wait to see what she’s got for us too!!! Thanks a million!
Um, sister, your tutorials are AWEsome!! 🙂 next time ya feel the need to share another makeup tut, would ya consider a more detailed eye makeup one?! This girl needs all the help she can get. 🙂
Rebekah: what else would you like to see? Would a video be better?
Hey girl…I love your blog! I just love trying new things with my gorgeous…ok….fine, thin hair! Thanks for all the tips and tricks. I was going to recommend a couple products to you. I am a consultant with Arbonne and we have the most fantastic make up primer! We also have what is called our transforming lift…both which are essential for me daily! Anyway…if you are interested I can definitely send you some samples! (aleciaeastridge@gmail.com) No pressure…it’s just these products have benefited me greatly so I can’t help but
share! Thanks for helping us all find a little more beauty in our day!
Hi Kate! Love your blog!!! Here I thought I’d found the perfect under eye concealer in Bare Escentuals Bisque. BUT, now I’m thinking I may have to try MAC. Have you ever tried the Bisque applied with the concealer brush? Just wondering if maybe there IS something even a little better out there.

@marla, I actually have but it’s not the same coverage at the MAC concealer, in my opinion. 🙂
Wow!! Great, I’ll give it a try.
Thanks for a great blog!!

I’ve always liked Maybelline mascaras but recently bought CG Lash Blast like what you have in this picture. I’m unfourtunantly not a big fan. Do you like it or do you always layer it with another? Any mascara is fine layered with another but Maybelline tends to work great alone. -Amy-
@Anonymous: I either use it alone or layer it with Mac False Lashes mascara!
Love the tutorial. As a beauty fashionista, I love your blog. Now you got me started on MAC which I would never buy due to the price, but lucky for me its sold on Ebay as discount prices! I got the MAC 25 brush set for 29.99 and eyeshadows for 10.00 each. Thanks for a great blog that is fun and useful for we fashionista girly girls. Luv it!
Hello love, be careful…sometimes/majority, of the make-up sold on Ebay is knock off. They do make knock off make-up. …Just letting you know because I had a co-worker that would sell it. :-/
I just found your blog and I LOVE it! I love your tutorials but I have a question about your make-up routine. I have always been taught to apply foundation and concealer first. Can you explain why you do your eye make-up first?
@N.Alex: just in case any eyeshadow sprinkles onto my face!
Love your blog, that goodness for pinterest and finding you. I have really long thick hair, so I’m trying all these different ideas, and it just isn’t the same for me at all. And I work for Lancôme , have for a very long time so if you ever need any skin are or makeup advice please ask!! You’re doing a great job!

Kate, I LOVE the videos and directions you give. You make it SO easy for me to do my hair. my hair is a LOT like yours and I basically have the same face shape so I LOVE ALLL that you share with us. Today I did my hair is the “bob look”. I looked at your video today on the messy pony tail. I LOVE it and I’m going to try to do that one tomorrow. You are GREAT so keep up the good work and THANKS for shareing ALLL that you do. OH…and I LOVE the hair products. I have a LOT of hair but fine hair so the products for volume I love.
You look gorgeous! Love the makeup and hair tutorials…have done my hair and improvised a little since my hair is a little longer but loved how it turned out! Actually thought I was a little cute! Anyway, my questions is….I have rosacea from one cheek to the other across my nose….my issue is trying to cover up and even my skin tone without looking like I have on a ton of makeup….any suggestions?
I just made my first Bare Escentuals purchase and I’m so excited to try the lip and cheek products you recommended! Thanks 🙂
Beautiful!! 🙂
what is your cleansing regimen?? absolutely LOVE your blog!
check my FAQ page!
Do you have any facial primer recommendations?
Hopefully soon!
Your dual ended brush that you use for eyeshadow, can you tell me what the make/model of it is?
Found your blog through Pinterest and fell in love! Looking for lots of makeup advice cause I suck at it have pretty much avoided it for the last 32 years of my life! All help and tutorials greatly appreciated!
Found you from pintrest. You’re ADORABLE! I have always worn my hair down. Same style everyday, but thanks to you, I have the cutest styles now!!! I saw one of the tutorials where you did your own eye make up. I lived it, but can’t seem to find it now. I’m frantically trying to locate it. Please help!! Thank for everything!!
Curious? What do you keep your makeup in? Bag? Basket?….
Kate, Kate, Kate…I found your blog simply by accident on Pinterest which turns out to be a true God send in my eyes! (EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON) Anyway, I have battled breast disease and went through all the treatments and reconstruction for the past 15 months and my hair was the VERY LAST thing on my mind. As I watched your 1st video I came across, I realized our hair is the exact same texture and shape. I have grown so tired of trying to do anything with my hair that I have actually been consideringhaving it cut off, I mean way off for the last several months. After watching “how to curl my hair with a curling iron” I jumped up, ran to the bathroom, dug out the OLD curling iron and yep…performed a miracle on my hair!!! I then changed it into a “messy bun” and my sons 12 & 9 asked me why I was getting fancy for town at 10:30 at night, LOL!!! I have now fell back in love with my hair and I am so very THANKFUL (praise the Lord) that I didn’t have it all cut off again!!! I couldn’t wait to get up this morning to try the “half french twist” for my errands to town! You truly are an inspiration and I ask that you let the Lord lead you and continue to be blessings to women like me!!! With much LOVE and APPRECIATION, Laina!!! (Cottondale, Fl)
Looking on the MAC site, I can’t find the Studio Fix Powder. Only Studio Fix Powder plus Foundation. Any help? Thanks! Loving your blog!!!
Shannon,
Studio Fix is a very thick powder, that can be worn alone as a foundation. I use it in place of foundation on days when I just need to rush out the door, but if you apply lightly with a brush (and not the sponge), it will help set your make-up and give a bit more coverage. Hope this helps!
<3
Lindsey
thanks Lindsey! Funny thing is, there is no MAC within 100 miles of me and currently my DH is deployed. He sent me a pic of him standing in front of a MAC store in the mall by his duty station. He texted “what do you want?” lol! So, he got me the powder and 2 shadows! Perfect timing!!!
Awww! That’s so cute and sweet! 🙂
Hi Kate,
I love your blog and this tutorial helps a lot! I just wanted to know your opinion on foundation. I am considering changing up my make up, and currently use loose mineral powder foundation. I don’t know whether or not to change to liquid from Mac or go for the bare essentials loose powder foundation?. What are your thoughts? I am light skinned just like you and have combination skin as well. I don’t want liquid of it feels heavy on the skin, but also I don’t want my face to look “cakey” either. Any advice is greatly appreciated. My birthday is in a few days so I want to get a new look for then to pair with one of your great hairstyles. =)
What a great blog…and great tutorials. I also put on foundation first…I am going to try it your way.
I am a makeup junkie as well. Love new things. I am going to try the MAC foundation and concealer although I have always had great luck with Lancome. Some things are worth the price. There is a great over the counter concealer I bought at Target (love that store!) by Olay. Also Olay makes the best moisturizers so no need to spend big bucks on this product for me (eye or facial)
Thanks so much!
Hi Kate – Love everything about your blog. From your makeup and hair tutorials to your decorating. My hair is similar to yours (mine might be a little shorter right now) but you have given me some great ideas, especially some updos for the summer. I have whimpy lashes as you say you do and one mascara that I love is Loreal’s Voluminous. I have tried other things but always go back to that line – I have recently tried the Million Lashes and love it. It makes my eyelashes look longer and fuller. They have several in that line and a couple new ones that I haven’t tried yet. Thanks for all the great info.
Thanks for the info. I was wondering where you got the scarf you are wearing in these pictures. I love the key print on it!
I like your blog! I check it once in a while and always find interesting reading.
Your nice services for makeup. i like this.
