Spring Style: Shoes

Athletic Favorites

I’m admittedly not much of a shoe girl. I’ve always preferred simple, neutral shoes that complete an outfit without being the star of the show, you know what I mean?

I much prefer having fun with tops, makeup, or even colorful handbags.

So when it comes to shoes, I get the most wear out of neutral, easy to wear, instantly comfortable options! I included a leopard pair in the graphic because I love a moment of print or pattern in certain shoes, but I also have a few nude options in a similar style too!

One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight

My most worn shoes these days are sneakers. I will either choose my Sam Edelman Aubrie sneakers, my Vince Janna sneaker, or a newer pair I’ve recently bought from Target, the Kalliope sneaker. Beyond these three, if I’m feeling festive, I’ll wear these Tory Burch Howell sneakers! The floral laces make them feel fun and feminine.

I’ve had my eye on these neutral slip-on sneakers from Birdies for a few weeks but they’ve been sold out. But I saw these slip-on sneakers from Caslon at Nordstrom and ordered them right away. I love that they have a mule feel without being totally flat (I really don’t love wearing flats). They have been a great addition to my wardrobe and replaced the desire to get the Birdies. If you don’t like a backless shoe, the Birdies option does look like a really nice option for spring!

The most worn, longest-owned pair I have is a suede block heel pump from J.Crew. They have a pointed toe and go with everything. I wish they still made them! I’ve scoured the internet and a similar style is this pair from Nordstrom. A reader also flagged me about this style from Ann Taylor that looks very similar!

If it’s warm enough where you live, a block heel sandal is a really nice option to start wearing opened-toed shoes again! I love the smaller straps on these sandals. The heel is a bit higher than what I typically choose but they are comfortable and sleek. If you are looking for a lower heel, these sandals (also from Target) were a great find! I love the puffy braided detail on the straps and find them to be really easy to wear. Lastly, a similar pair of sandals can be found at Madewell. I have these and LOVE them.

With this lineup, I know I have a simple, easy-to-wear option with literally any outfit I want to wear this spring. I love that I don’t have to overthink my shoes because I have just a handful of comfortable, neutral options to choose from!

Anne Taylor has a great suede block heel pump right now! Super similar but it is a sling back. I love their shoes and think it is super underrated!

I love the idea and look of a white sneaker, but how do you mom in them? The thing that keeps me from buying a nice pair of white (or even tan or blush) sneakers is that I’m afraid of going out and playing with my kids in the grass or mulch in them. Are yours strictly for not playing purposes?

Also, can you show us how to style casual mules like you linked to? Whenever I think of casual backless shoes, my mind goes directly to those backless Skechers sneakers that were popular about 20 years ago (not to mention the deep shame that I owned a pair). Change my mind, Kate!!

What socks do you wear with the Sam Edelman sneakers, or do you wear without? I don’t like my socks to show, but no-show socks tend to make my toes hurt by the end of the day – I know that sounds weird, but they seem to pull on my toes so that after hours of wear they become sore. So it is an ongoing dilemma for me!

Do the Caslon slip on “sneakers” have pretty good arch support? Do they run true to size, or would you suggest sizing up a half size? Sometimes slip on clogs require me to size up a half. Thank you!!
