If I glance at my denim options in my closet, I see a lot of dark, skinny jeans. While I still think there is always a place for that style of denim in my wardrobe, I’m really enjoying seeing the more relaxed and lighter washes for Spring.
I found a great pair of cropped straight leg denim from Target (similar) that I’ve already worn a handful of times. They have just the right amount of distressing without looking too casual. I like wearing a dressier top with pointed-toe heels to balance the casual nature to the jeans. But they are also a great “weekend”, throw-on pair that goes easily with a t-shirt and sneakers.
Here are a few of my favorite straight leg denim options, from chic ankle-grazing dark denim to more casual, distressed lighter washes.
I’ve worn my stovepipe jeans (similar) from J.Crew a lot already this spring. I love the wash and texture of the denim, and they have a nice amount of comfortable stretch as well! Old Navy makes a really nice straight leg jean called the “power straight” and it comes in a dark, classic wash.
The denim I’m wearing in the above photographs is the Universal Thread high-rise distressed straight cropped jeans from Target (similar). I would have NEVER bought these based on the image online (why the socks and clogs?!?!?!), but in person, they are a great cropped option.
I’m curvy and wear a size 8, so cropped denim really has to be on the slightly longer end so it doesn’t cut my leg in half. These were just the right length, and the high-rise is a nice addition as well.
In a recent Trunk Club, Ari (my stylist) sent me these Paige jeans (similar). I actually wish I would have sized down to my regular size (29) but there was a 30 in my box so I kept those. They are comfortable and relaxed, but I wish they fit a little tighter since they are a lighter wash.
P.S. If you are looking for tops and accessories to pair with these jeans this upcoming season check out my post “Trends for a Casual Spring Wardrobe”.

I wish those Target ones you’re wearing came in not destroyed. On most people destroyed looks cute…I look like I lost a bet! Cropped denim that stays up is hard for me to find.
You raved about Target’s denim shorts last year – do you have a link to those, too? I plan to bring back the jort!!
However, I’m now up to three pairs of Roadtrippers because they’re SO good!
I’ll keep my eyes out for a straight leg option that isn’t distressed! Roadtrippers are SO GOOD, you are right!
Hi Kate! Asking a favor…I have made the decision to color my own hair for the first time in my life due to inability to visit my regular stylist of 25 years for my usual cut and color. (Thanks, COVID-19 🦠) Is there any advice or recommendations you could offer for those of us about to go the drugstore hair color route temporarily? Thank you! P.S. I’m still going to pay my stylist as though she did my regular cut and color because I can’t bear the thought of all the business she’s losing. 😭
I too am liking the spring style lighter wash denim. I found a great pair from Loft but have trouble styling them with the right tops. I wish there were more non-distressed options as those do not meet the dress code for our dress code at work. Any good non-distressed finds that are more affordable?
Kate, I love your flats! Where are they from?
Kate! I love the light grey shoes you have on here.. where are they from? thank you!
I’ve always worn skinny jeans but lately, ive been into those mom jeans and really loose jeans! love them!!
