Passport Picture Fails

Ask Kate: On Shower Caps, My Former Career, and More

I took Emily to a local place to have her picture taken for a passport that we need for a trip next year and it was 30 minutes of her pretending to be an actual monkey unable to be still for the camera.

So I thought I’d just take them myself but as it turns out, when you ask your kids *not* to smile for a picture, all they are able to do is ham it up and laugh hysterically.

So while we may or may not have passport photos, at least I know how to get the kids to smile in upcoming Christmas card photos by telling them to keep a straight face and not smile!

I read somewhere that you can smile for photos now! It was another blogger who shared their (smiling) photos

Fun post! Which got me thinking… would you consider posting about how to do/style little boys’ hair? Mine is the same age as your David, and he keeps asking me to make his hair “look good”. I’ve browsed the boys hair product aisle and don’t know where to start (i.e. whats the difference between gel, pomade, putty, clay, etc). Given your salon background and as a mom of 2 boys, I’d love to learn from your experience!

they changed the requirements – now you can have a “natural” smile in passport photos – no more mean mugging required!

Have fun on international travels – we’ve taken our 4.5 year old on quite a few trips, the most recent being Italy and Greece – he loves his Big Adventures and seeing the world is the most valuable things I can offer him.

Actually they do allow you to smile a “natural” smile in passport photos now, but the people at local places often don’t know that. I had mine taken at CVS last year and the girl did two because I had read you could smile, but the girl there said no. I submitted the smiling one and it came back fine. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/photos.html

I had my 3 year old son’s picture taken for his passport and then when I went to the post office to do the application they said the photo would not work, but they could redo it right then and there. He was WAY overdue for a haircut and I hadn’t tried to do his hair at all, it was a shaggy, greasy looking mess. To top it off, he was wearing an orange t-shirt. So his passport photo legit looks like a mug shot. Good luck trying to get that done with 3 little ones!!!

We got ours done at Costco and it was a breeze. The person was so good with them (we have 4 children). I have done it at the post office too but Costco was quick and inexpensive.
