Favorite Lip Colors from 2018

one. two. three. four. five. six. seven. eight. nine.

If you missed it, I rounded up some of my favorite lip products in this post! I’m moving on today to eye products!

I used cream eyeshadow sticks for so much of the year. They are quick and simple, which is what I needed right when I had the baby. Usually they are very easy to apply and blend, and my favorite brand of shadows is by NudeStix.

Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette – A beautiful palette of easy to wear tones that would be flattering on so many different skin tones. The colors are pigmented and buttery, this would be a great all around palette to have in your makeup bag!

One Fine Line eyeliner – This is great for lining right at the base of the lashes so your lashline looks thicker!

Nudestix Eyeshadows – They are so easy to use and blend in easily. Perfect for quick mornings or if you want a low maintenance makeup routine.

Maybelline eyeshadow crayon – a drugstore version of a cream shadow that looks beautiful on the eye. The packaging is a little clunky but the color is stunning.

Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner – This is a great long-lasting eyeliner that can be smudged out immediately after using but once it’s sets it won’t go anywhere!

Marc Jacobs Gel eyeliner – On days that I was skipping dark liner or eye makeup, I would at least smudge a bit of this at my lashline for a touch of depth. It’s a beautiful shade and would also look beautiful under the eye as well!

Benefit Vanity Flare Nude palette – I bought this later in the year but I reach for it more often than not! It’s been a favorite palette for sure. The colors are beautiful and can all be mixed together nicely to create different eye looks!

p.s. The easiest cat eye in the world, and a favorite double ended eyeshadow brush!

I love the Too Faced palette as well! I got the Sultry palette for Christmas and it has been really fun. I’m positive the Walmart cashier’s notice and appreciate my eye look.

Haha, Megan! I got a palette a few months ago but didn’t use it for a while because it seems so fancy. I finally realized I just needed to use it, and I feel certain that my students at the elementary school I teach at are so impressed by my fancy eyes!

I used the Maybelline after you mentioned it in a post and found it to be very glittery. Any drugstore finds which may not present this issue?

Kate says · 12.29.18

it’s haaaaard to find cream eyeshadow sticks that aren’t shimmery! Nudestix is an option but unfortunately isn’t drugstore!

If you like this color scheme (which is my personal fav), try BH Cosmetics – there’s a Glam Reflection one in “Rose” that is beautiful! It’s so affordable too with a great formula. The mattes are so buttery!

Is the Maybelline crayon the Eyestudio Color Tattoo crayon? I’m asking because the link doesnt link to a product.

Reply
Kate says · 12.29.18

Yes!

Bridgette says · 12.29.18

Which colors have you tried? Are they shimmery or matte?

Reply
Kate says · 12.29.18

You know, I’m having a hard time finding that product. It may be discontinued 🙁

I need to try some of the cream shadow sticks! They would make my getting ready for work routine a lot easier!!

You’re screening comments to avoid any criticism. It only reinforces how disingenuous this platform has become.

Reply
Sadie says · 12.29.18

Sarah, if you don’t like Kate’s blog don’t read it . . . go somewhere else PLEASE!

Reply
Sarah says · 12.29.18

No thanks, but I appreciate the advice. The point of my comment was to highlight how the amount of negative comments drastically decreased once Kate started screening them. Imagine if businesses did that on Yelp or Angie’s List, etc? Imagine hiring a plumber to fix your kitchen sink. Said plumber erased any and all negative feedback on every review site. If you found that out, after your plumbing issues didn’t go away with the plumber’s work, would you feel upset? Or would you say “Oh well, it’s only money I lost to someone not qualified. If I don’t like it, I’ll go somewhere else!”

The difference, Sarah, is that it doesn’t cost you any money to visit the site. You are not required to come here, you are not charged for a visit, you are consuming free content on the internet. You must make an independent decision to type the web address and click over to the site. You are free, as you always have been, to choose what you want to read/view.
I’m screening comments to control the unbelievable amount of specific hate about myself and my family.
If you are able to read before and after your comment, you’ll see that opinions/criticism as comments are fine as long as it doesn’t cross the line of a personal attack.
If you are dissatisfied with the blog, it may serve you better to find a different website to visit. I know for me, if there is something in my life that is causing me to have a bitter or vindictive reaction, I try to remove it or figure out a way to deal with it.
You are choosing to visit, you are choosing to comment (which again, you are free to do), but it sure seems like you are adding fuel to your imaginary fire of misplaced hate.

I love this so much. There have been so many posts from people acting like they are paying for a service instead of receiving it for free. Talk about entitlement! And this from the people doing such heavy criticism! I wish they could see how much their comments reveal about them rather than about Kate! How and why they choose to spend so much time spewing so much hate I have no idea! They aren’t the noble crusaders they keep pretending to be. I guess everyone who comes here is smart enough to figure out if they like the content enough to keep reading. I don’t think we need them pointing things out for other readers. If only some of the commenters were both smart enough and mature enough to make that decision without resulting to petty insults under the guise of constructive criticism…

Julie says · 12.30.18

Some of the comments are just flat out mean and those are uncalled for, but as for the true feedback and your comment about this being a free platform, it doesn’t cost any of us a dime to walk into Target, but if they want our money and want us to keep coming back, they have to make sure they are listening to us…their target audience. They do that by creating a great environment, and offering great prices and offering great products that are great quality. Your blog isn’t really all that different. I have time to give and money to spend and although I *could* go elsewhere, I would think and hope that you would want most of us to love coming to you, love buying off your recommendations, and supporting you and the thing you love to do! If this was my job, I would hope people would tell me what I can do so that I can keep them coming back. I know you can’t please everyone, but the mindset that you should “just go elsewhere” isn’t exactly the best strategy for your business which is ultimately what this is for you. If it were a hobby, you could tell us all to go pound sand and I’d totally understand but that just isn’t the case.

100% agree. I found her blog for the bouncy curled under lob cut years ago, and it has gone way downhill since. I get that having kids changes things, but the “cat eye” makeup look was a joke, her version of the ice cream story now is 100% different than last year, when is when they actually FINALLY found the intended recipient, her “makeup” looks are all 100% exactly the same, and her hair tutorials are all regurgitated from 2011/2012. There is nothing new coming from her. Ever. Well, except new complaints on the daily about whatever “hardship” she is currently enduring. She needs to take a LOOOOOOONG (Possibly permanent?)step back and reevaluate

As an outsider, it sounds like you are unhappy and unfulfilled with the content on this blog. Maybe a different blog would better suit your needs? There are several thousand blogs from which you might benefit.

Totally agree Emily! If the content is not what you are looking for or desire – then don’t read it let alone comment. I personally enjoy her blog and that is why I am here!
Thank you – next!

What shade is the Maybelline product? The link does not seem to work

Reply
Kate says · 12.29.18

Unfortunately it seems that this product is already discontinued! The formula was great but the crayon was prone to breaking in the tube. Perhaps they are repackaging and it will be back?

I love creamy eyeshadow sticks, and they really are great for busy moms. I just had my first baby last January (wow she’s almost a year old!!) and my go to since she was born has been from Mally beauty cosmetics. So easy to use…Kate, maybe you can soon do a tutorial using some of your 2018 picks so we can see them all in action! 😉 I’d love to see more of the Maybelline and Nudestix options

Another day, another list of links to click. Such “inspired!!” posts, with so much work behind the scenes I’m sure. Kate googles eyeliners and hyperlinked to them- gotta fill those 2 hour work days some how.

Kate says · 12.29.18

Round ups are nothing new here. Maybe you are a new reader? For the past few years I round up favorites from the year at the end of December.
I don’t have 2 hour work days, you may be confusing me with someone else.

A really great option for those looking for a cream eyeshadow stick is Sephora brand liner and eyeshadow crayons. They are $14 each and come in a very wide range of shades, from matte to shimmer. Cheaper than NudeStix which are pricey IMO but not the cheapest thing on the market. I’ve been super pleased with them.

I second this recommendation! I have the taupe shade and it’s perfect – adds some sheen but not glittery all!

Earlier I posted a lengthy comment with feedback and constructive criticism. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and chalk up my comment being not published due to an error I made. As you and at least one other person pointed out, your readers do not pay for this service, however just because one does not pay for a service does not mean they are exempt from criticism. I work for a state agency that provides services to individuals and they do not have to pay for it. That does not mean my work is not reviewed or the individuals I serve cannot provide feedback. Not all of it is positive and I have received negative feedback from a higher level of management. This was a result of a complaint someone I served made and I have made attempts to be more mindful and aware of some of my actions.

In summary, please do take the time to read the constructive feedback you’ve received recently and take the time to review your work.

Reply
Laura says · 12.30.18

This exactly….. Kate you are correct that we do not technically pay for your service but you do make money from your readers when you share affiliate links or are offered paid ads based on your number of followers or engagement. As I previously stated there are a lot of us that have been following you for a very long time, we offer feedback and constructive criticism and it’s brushed off as people being haters or trolls. People will not follow much longer if you continue to brush it off.

Your analogy doesn’t work. Blogs aren’t a service being provided by a state agency, they are entertainment. There’s no set job description that she isn’t fulfilling. You aren’t Kate’s manager, you are a voluntary patron to her blog. You have the right to quit reading if you aren’t enjoying the entertainment. Perhaps you have outgrown this blog or are looking for different content or formats.
If I’m watching Real Housewives and dislike it because there’s not enough detectives and courtrooms in it, I should probably just turn on Law and Order instead. (Or CSI, Or The Good Wife, or about 500 other shows that might a better fit what I’m looking for.)
Sure, I can email the Bravo execs my ideas and threaten not to watch if they don’t change. But even if I had a petition of 200 people who wanted more courtroom scenes, the millions of people who enjoy the usual RH antics would be the priority to the execs.

I am so sad reading all these terrible comments about Kate. I have followed her blog and insta for a long time. It takes guts to share even part of your life with others online and I think Kate does a great job of showing what real life looks like. I am so thankful for the hard work she puts in to writing this posts, researching products and filming tutorials. Thanks Kate, your recommendations have never steered me wrong!

Does anyone know what happened with the Maybelliene Eyeshadow Crayons? I searched all the drugstores, Ulta, etc. and then looked online and I can’t find them anywhere! I’ve been wanting a simple product like this for summer and am disappointed! I remembered Kate talking about them but the link doesn’t work anymore.
