Morning Skincare Products (including a new base that is AMAZING)

Slip-ons and Sneakers

Between beauty school, watching Youtube tutorials, and over 15 years of experience wearing and experimenting with makeup and skincare, I feel like I have a good grasp on it. But there is always room for learning more, and I learned so much when Andreea was doing my makeup a few weeks ago. (You can watch the video here!)

My latest skincare routine, in the morning, has involved Ole Henriksen Truth Serum and fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream with Super 7 Complex. I apply the Vitamin C serum first and let that sink into my skin. It does wonders for hydration and I swear it makes my skin look a few years younger, and then I apply a decent amount of my long time favorite face cream on top of the serum and let that sink in for at least 20 minutes before applying any makeup.

I was using the Bare Minerals Prime Time but after buying a full-size container, I discovered that it separates quite easily and feels greasier than it felt in the smaller trial-size container. I certainly could have gotten a bad batch, but ever since this happened I’ve avoided using it.

So I’ve been primer-less for a few weeks! I can definitely live without using primer, but I do believe it helps my makeup look more flawless. I was thrilled to have a new one tested on my face when Andreea was applying my makeup, and it was SO GOOD that I bought it the next day.

She used Bobbi Brown’s Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturizer, and I can best describe it as an ultra-hydrating moisturizer that feels like a silky primer on the skin. I love the way it smells, it’s like lemons and cucumbers, and it felt amazing on my skin. She was essentially giving me a facial massage while applying it so that made it feel ultra luxurious, but I’ve been so pleased with how my skin looks and feels, as well as how my makeup applies and lasts with it.

I have dry skin, with constant flakes around my nose, so using these 3 products (in the order they are shown in the photo) has helped seriously combat the dryness. Once the humidity levels kick up here in the summer, I may skip the Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream, and see how just using the serum and the face base work together, but for now I’m happily using all three!

Do you also use a sunscreen on top of all these things? I currently use a moisturizer with spf in it and I’d like to find a better one, but haven’t.

I love using that Bobbi Brown Base, the makeup goes on so smoothly! 🙂 I keep it in my “special occasion” basket, though as it’s quite expensive!

Do you have any recommendations for a Vitamin C serum for combination/oily skin? I used one years and years ago but for the life of me cannot remember what it was. LOVE these skin care posts 🙂

I know Colleen Rothschild makes a vitamin C serum that you could check into, but other than that I’m not totally sure!

Drunk Elephant Firma -C. I just started using this last week and already see that my skin is brighter.

I also have oily/combination skin and have been using truth serum about 5 weeks (morning and night- started w/ small size to make sure I’ll like it). I have not noticed is making my skin any greasier, but am also anticipating I’ll need to cut back to once a day for the summer humidity. Love this!

Ditto on the sunscreen question! I looked at the Fresh cream because I know you like it so much, but I like having SPF in my AM moisturizer.

Reply
Kate says · 03.12.18

I don’t like using an SPF in my moisturizer, so it’s something I get from my foundation or a product applied after applying makeup!

Katie says · 03.12.18

Gotcha, thanks Kate!

Oops! I just left a super similar question. So let me change my question slightly. If you use a product *after* makeup, how do you prevent it from smearing everything around? For example I really like finishing with a loose powder… but I feel like sunscreen would mess that up?

I have a translucent powder SPF, here is a link! https://rstyle.me/n/czictcm8f6

I love the Vit C serum and use it daily! I also agree that it makes me look a little more fresh/youthful…lol.
Thanks

I’ve been using Face Base for gosh almost 10 years I think. I got lured away recently since I have to order it online and I wanted to try some new things with more “stuff” in it I guess. But I can definitely tell a difference when I use it so it’s back to this for daytime!

I am a fellow fair-skinned gal, and I’m wondering when/if you use SPF? Just curious because I feel like at age 36, I need to change my skin products to reflect the changes happening with my skin. I also find that great sunscreen products are so hard to find.

I have seen so many bloggers/Youtubers rave about the Face Base, do you think it would work with oily skin as well? I feel like everyone talks abut their skin being dry and mine definitely isn’t.

I have oily skin and I LOVE the face base. It’s the best 🙂

Hi Kate!

I just want to give my two cents to your post and routine. I would suggest you to use SPF 50 as well. I do use vitamin C every morning but it is worthless trying to fight free radicals if you don’t use SPF as well. I do want to try that base so bad but it it out of stock at Sephora!!!!
Thanks for the posts!! I love your blog!!

I am anxiously awaiting the delivery of my Face Base! So many people have raved about it lately; glad to see it’s something you like as well. Can’t wait to use it!

I found the exact same thing with the Bare Minerals primer lately. I figured one bottle was old or something so I pitched it opened a new one, and same separated, greasy mess.

Reply
Kate says · 03.13.18

ugh, thats too bad. Im nervous to buy it again because I’m afraid it will separate!

That must be so annoying to have flaking skin in the winter! I don’t have as many problems with dryness as I do with dullness in the winter. I try to make it better with a few beauty masks, but sometimes the grey weather just makes you look grey! Thanks for sharing the Ole serum. I’ve had my eyes on those products for a few months now, so I’m definitely going to bite the bullet soon! I also like Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate. So nice in the morning that I used a whole sample up right away!

I love the idea of adding a base under my makeup! I used Bare Minerals Prime Time for a long time too, but I also had issues with the greasy feeling…I don’t think you had a bad batch!

I am waiting for that Vitamin C Truth Serum to arrive in the mail! I ordered it after reading one of your last posts about it. I can’t wait to try it. I found a carrot seed serum I use for nighttime at an Apothecary around here and absolutely love it and was looking for something else to add for during the day to liven up my sometimes dry skin. I started using primer a little while back and notice it does make a difference. Have you tried the Honest Company one? That is the one I use and love. Your skin always looks great!

How is your skin so perfect?? I suffer from breakouts (mostly around my chin and mouth, which I know is hormonal) during my time of the month. And when I was pregnant, it was even worse! You complexion is flawless 🙂

Have you tried using all the Ula Hendrickson products? I got the little starter kit at Sephora because I wanted to use the Vitamin C Serum after your recommendations and I’ve been using the moisturizer and night gel as well and I’m loving the way my skin feels but since they’re all new to me, it’s hard to separate if it’s the serum that’s really making the improvement or the whole regimen.

Is the Lotus Youth Preserve more moisturizing than the Rose Deep Moisturizing that you usually use?

Reply
Kate says · 11.05.18

I don’t usually use the Rose Deep Moisturizing, I’ve been using the Lotus Youth Preserve more consistently and for a longer period of time! The Rose product is more hydrating but I found I got too shiny when I wore it in the daytime!
