Day to Holiday Party Makeup in 2 steps
Layering with Stripes
Motherhood brings many opportunities to practice efficiency and time management. And with that said, I almost never have time to get “freshly” ready for a fancy event in the evenings. I need to just build on whatever I did that morning when the kids were still asleep, or during nap time.
So, the two changes I can easily make that take a daytime look to holiday party ready are eyeliner and a strong lip color! Since I knew I was going to be building on this daytime look, I chose a neutral shimmery eyeshadow (shade Ashes to Ashes) that I’ve been wearing a repeat for the last month or so. And instead of going strong on the upper lid eyeliner, I pressed used an angled brush with a bit of Rich Caviar liner into my lash line and did a tiny flick at the ends. And the serious volume on my lashes comes from this Bobbi Brown mascara that I love.
To jazz things up a bit I used a navy blue eyeliner that added rich depth to my eyes and also a tiny bit of color. And the wine colored lip (#964) didn’t compete with the eyeliner and remained the focus of the look!
When I’m shopping for beauty products, especially lipstick, I like being able to see all the options up close. I love shopping at Nordstrom for that reason because the beauty section is divided up by brand, but you can easily see all the shades available. And you can try it on, live with it for a couple minutes, and then make the decision on whether or not to buy.
These steps took almost no time, and I suddenly felt so festive!
Before the 90’s came back in style this year, I think I could have avoided a wine colored shade at all cost, but I actually quite liked the look! It’s not brown enough to look like a true 90’s inspired shade, but I like how deep and moody it is. And the matte finish feels really cool.
Another lipstick option to try this season is Bowl Me Over. It has a bit more brown than the shade I’m wearing, but also has a matte finish. And if you have green eyes, this eyeliner in shade London would be stunning!
I also have to mention this lipstick kit I found at Nordstrom. It looks like the perfect set for any makeup look. It has a balanced mix of evening and daytime shades. I think anyone could wear each of the shades in this kit!
It’s hard to believe the holidays are here already, but on that same note I’ve been listening to Christmas music since the day after Halloween so I’m *ready*!

I was surprised when I clicked on Ashes to Ashes that it wasn’t gray. What a beautiful color! Reminds me of MAC Honesty or All That Glitters.
I’m loving the bold lip! It really brings an otherwise neutral look to another level. I’m still not brave enough to try it, because I’m on the, ahem, mature side. But I love those wine colors!!

Carol H, GO AWAY! You sure like to post a lot of negative comments!
What a fabulous look for you with the red lip! So pretty!
Everyone knows you get dressed after you do your makeup!
Carol H, Why read the blog if you have such negative feelings towards it? It is obvious that you don’t believe Kate should receive a paycheck (or compensation) for her efforts, then I guess you reject payments when you work?!?
Hi Kate, just wondering where the earrings in the daytime look is from? Thanks!
Nice switch up! I’m not really into those deep brown lip shades. That’s a 90s trend I can live without but this wine lip and the subtle blue eyeliner are a really nice alternative.
