A Day Date with David

David and I had a little coffee date recently. He chose a chocolate milk, and I chose an americano with cream.Β When we were in line, he saw a little girl in front of us order a chocolate muffin, so he promptly decided that he wanted a “black” muffin as well.Β We walked over to the table, and he immediately dug into that delicious muffin.

It was fun to dress up a bit and have this special little date with him. I’ve been a huge J.Crew Factory fan for years, and had so much fun picking out coordinating outfits to wear over this upcoming holiday season. To be honest, anytime I have an event coming up, J.Crew Factory is the first place I check. I live about an hour from a physical store, but I have just as much fun shopping online.

I normally steer clear of colors, but I couldn’t stop thinking about this red tuxedo blouse when I saw it online. The pleats down the front added a little visual interested to the blouse, without making it bulky or busy. AndΒ as soon as I found the skirt, I knew I had to have that outfit. I’m always looking for clothes that work with my lifestyle, so stiff pencil skirts without stretch don’t appeal to me at all. This skirt, however, has an elastic waist and is cut short enough to be a very flattering length, but also is easy to wear when I amΒ chasing after my kids.

I also think this skirt would look really great with a charcoal grey turtleneck tucked into it. In fact, I may have to recreate that very outfit for Thanksgiving day!

David looked so adorable in his collared shirt and corduroy pants. It’s funny, as soon as I buttoned the last button on his shirt, I looked up and him and he seemed to have age 5 years!

I often see other moms talking about how fun it is to match their daughters, but I have to argue that it’s equally as fun to coordinate with your sons! And now David and I have some great options to wear for holiday parties and family events. I love that the clothes look great, and are at an awesome price point, but are still really comfortable!

David’s Outfit: courdorys, button up shirt

Kate’s Outfit: blouse, skirt, bracelet, earrings

J.Crew Factory just released their gift guide, and it is certainly worth browsing–whether for gifts or for yourself! And in case you haven’t gotten one of their puffer vests, you should know that I have 2 and they are some of the most worn items in my closet in the fall and winter!

And right now they are running a promo of 50% off everything and free shipping on orders over $50! Happy shopping!

The clothes on David and I were gifted from J.Crew Factory, a store I’ve shopped at for years. This post was sponsored by J.Crew Factory.

David looks adorable in his little outfit. Dressing boys is fun; I have the best time with my nephew.

I love that red shirt. It’s not normally a color I would wear either, but I love it.

David looks adorable! Clearly this is a “staged” date, since you brought a photographer with you. Is this all you are doing now is sponsored videos? 2nd one in a row!

Reply
Amanda says · 11.21.16

Kate answered that a few posts ago, when the same question came up. Personally, I don’t have a problem with sponsored posts. Considering the amount of content we can access free on her site (hair and makeup tutorials, for starters), I think it’s only fair to her that she receive compensation at some point for her efforts.

Reply
Gturn62 says · 11.21.16

Exactly! Give Kate a break, people. She deserves a paycheck.

Reply
Carol H says · 11.21.16

Yall are crazy if you don’t think she gets paid in other ways. Many bloggers/youtubers are very honest about how they get paid. Go watch one of their videos about it. I don’t have a problem with an occasional sponsored post, but she does A LOT!! And, since I have been following her over the years, she has contradicted herself more than once when doing something sponsored. Again, on occasion is fine. But to play it off like a date with your son? Come on.

Reply
Kirsten says · 11.21.16

Who cares if the posts are sponsored? Or if she’s paid or not? She provides her own opinions. I would rather have that than a celebrity promoting a product on tv, ad, or otherwise.
Companies are smart, what better way to promote their products…. than with bloggers! Win / Win !

DD says · 11.21.16

I don’t have a problem with the sponsored posts – although the number does appear to have increased significantly over the past couple years. What bothers me is that the sponsored posts are written in a different “voice.” I know immediately if there is going to be an asterisk at the end saying it was sponsored content. These posts just don’t sound genuine and authentic, which is starting to turn me off of the blog, quite honestly.

Myra says · 11.21.16

its a blog people…do you think she wants to sit at home and write for free all the time. It’s what they do from time to time and why not? I would totally do sponsored posts and if you have been a reader for a long time, she really does shop here a lot.

Reply
Carol H says · 11.21.16

Sponsored or not… she doesn’t do it for free. I totally agree, you can tell right away!

Reply
Kate says · 11.22.16

This is not a sponsored video? And if you have questions about how I earn a living with my job you can refer to my FAQ page.

“The clothes on David and I were gifted…” This is incorrect grammar. It should be “The clothes on David and me were gifted…” I would not bother pointing this out were it not that you clearly want to be taken seriously as a blogger. Here’s the rule: Take out the other person’s name and conjunction, and then re-read the sentence. If you would use “I” without “David and,” then “David and I” is correct. But in this case, you would not say “The clothes on I were gifted…,” so “The clothes on David and I were gifted…” is also incorrect. I am saying this out of respect for you, Kate. To any of your readers who might comment, “Give Kate a break… nobody cares about grammar,” let me say this. I fully realize that you might not care about grammar, and even some of Kate’s sponsors might not care about grammar. But others do… they notice, even if they don’t comment themselves. We can all be better. Continued blessings to you, Kate.

Reply
Maria says · 11.21.16

I was always taught by rigid grammar books that it’s always correct to say “soandso and I,” instead of “soandso and me.”
I think it’s just a strange sentence and you were confused by that.

Reply
Megan says · 11.21.16

I believe Val C. is correct. The sentence is awkward because it’s in passive voice. If Kate had said, “J. Crew gifted these outfits to David and me,” it would’ve be clearer. As Val pointed out, you wouldn’t say, “J. Crew gifted these clothes to I” – making “me” the correct pronoun.

Anyway, I love seeing some color on you, Kate.

Reply
Nicole says · 11.21.16

Luke was there too wasn’t he? You posted this on snapchat. Confusing. Was he not gifted clothes?

Reply
Jessica says · 11.21.16

I was wondering about this too. Luke was definitely there when this happened. She even posted a picture on Instagram of Luke and David sitting at the very same table. It wasn’t a “milk date” with just the two of them. It’s little things like this that makes it very hard to believe anything Kate says.

Reply
Monica says · 11.22.16

Agreed. I assume Luke wasn’t gifted clothes because J.Crew doesn’t make them in his size (my son is roughly the same age, and I also love J.Crew, so I know!). I have no problem at all with sponsored posts, but this is excessively transparent, for my tastes, at least.

Reply
Kate says · 11.22.16

Without getting too deep into it, This post was shot immediately after our christmas card photos and I did not find it necessary to get childcare for Luke while Jordan, my photographer, took photos of David and I. In order to show the clothes clearly, and capture photos of David and me, I thought it would be helpful to have a photographer present. Selfies in the mirror wouldn’t work for this.
Being a working mom with only 10 hours of my work week with paid childcare, I sometimes multitask and look for ways to be efficient so I can otherwise spend my time with my family.

Btw, I really like that shade of red on your nails…if you don’t mind me asking what brand is that? I can never find a red that I truly like.

So cute! Love J.Crew Factory for all our family. Did you know you can also buy online through GapFactory? I’ll be honest, my mind was blown when I found out that nugget. I clearly need to get out more!
Unsolicited boy mom tip: when dressing (& laundering) boys in button up shirts….don’t unbutton all the buttons to dress/undress them. Just unbutton enough at the top to slip over their head. Cuts down on the squirm factor (and increases your chance for proper button alignment). I also don’t unbutton when I wash them. When they are buttoned up in the laundry, you decrease the chance of the sleeves getting tangled in other clothes, which leads to more wrinkles, which leads to more ironing. Which leads to less date time!

Wow! I haven’t had time to view Kate’s blog for awhile. I always enjoy everything from learning something about hair and makeup to seeing her adorable little boys. I was very surprised by the negative comments to this post – grammar corrections, who was or was not in pictures, being paid by sponsors, etc. Kate has worked hard to build her blog, brand and business. She figured out a way to promote and teach her readers about the things that she loves and is knowledgeable about while spending a lot of time with her family. I will look forward to reading more about Kate, her family, hair, makeup and fashion. Yes, there are many more blogs out there to critique if that is the reason a person is reading a blog. I will stick with Kate, she is terrific!

Reply
Lynn says · 11.21.16

I’m surprised at the negative comments, too! Obviously Kate’s blog is being noticed by J Crew, Target, Nordstrom and others, why wouldn’t she promote them, especially since she’s a regular shopper AND poster about those sites? Good grief, give her a break! I smell jealousy, and it stinks!

Reply
Anna says · 11.21.16

Agree with Lynn and Debbie — Haters need to move on and find other blogs. I have enjoyed Kate’s blog for years, and I am a very different career/mom than Kate — but it doesn’t matter, because Kate is such a genuine and talented person…I just love reading about her blog, learning from her, and learning about her! Keep up the great work, Kate!

Love you and your blog….but….there is an Instagram post a while back where you all were at Starbucks….the day you had family pics taken. David had on the exact outfit with Luke and a black muffin? I don’t mind sponsored posts at all. I think you ABSOLUTELY should get paid for advertising, but maybe don’t make up stories about a son “date” for the sake of advertising. We notice. I love how real you’ve always been. That’s why I followed you to begin with. Keep it real with us girly. 😘

It really saddens me that so much negativity can come from people when you are sharing such a big part of your life with the world. I applaud you for your courage and strength!

I love that when I come to your blog I am not inundated with ads and popups. Since I hate that stuff, I will gladly read a sponsored post and I love that you have incorporated fun ways to share it by including your cute family.

I value your opinion because I know that you don’t promote products or companies that you don’t personally endorse. I look at Instagram and Snapchat as the behind the scenes view of what you are posting on the site and I love it!

We need more kindness in this world. We need to support each other as women. I am not a mother but I love coming to read about your tips and tricks and product recommendations so that I can share them with my friends or access for the day that I am a mother.

I loved the mix of content and the way it has evolved as life evolves for all of us.

Keep it up!

I hardly ever buy stuff from blog posts etc. but I cannot stand how cute this outfit is and a good deal too — I for one am glad about this sponsored post πŸ˜‰ I’ve recently gotten into wearing skirts even in the winter (with good thick leggings — it’s really cold where I live!). I did have a question about the sizing and shape of the skirt even after looking through the reviews on JCrew. Does it run true to size? I was thinking about ordering a size up from my usual 6 so that I could wear it a bit lower since it also looks a bit short and I’m pretty tall. But maybe that wouldn’t work with the shape/pleated waist? Sorry…I realize you are not my personal shopper. Haha. I live in China and so it’d be a bit of an ordeal to return. Thanks for your input and thanks for the great post!
