Casual Stripes & my dream shoes

Bangs: A good or bad decision?

Old Navy used to be hit or miss for me. And more misses than hits. I love shopping there for my kids, and Justin used to wear their white undershirts constantly, but I found a lot of their tops to be short and boxy.

But something happened this summer and they finally hit a length I feel comfortable in, AND they survive the washing machine.

There are a few clothes rules I stick to, one of them being to avoid linen as much as possible. It’s needs special care, and I need to be able to wash and dry my clothes without spending time hanging special shirts. That being said, there are a few tops, even made of cotton, that I hang to dry and then toss in the dryer to remove wrinkles, but I try not to build a wardrobe made entirely of high maintenance clothes.

You know how sometimes you can pick up a shirt at store, and just by the feeling you can tell it will get totally ruined in the washing machine? I found that a lot at Old Navy. But lately? Something is different in the material and I find myself browsing there more often than not. Their price point is fantastic, and I’ve added a few staples to my wardrobe this year!

ANYWAY, this stripe shirt was a total win! Another similar option, also at a great price point, is this one from H&M! I also saw that this highly rated top is restocked, and it’s a perfect tunic length, easy shirt to to wear. And at $19.00, I have to admit I bought it as soon as I saw it.

I live in easy, comfortable clothes, and this fit in perfectly.

I also was looking for shoes that I could slide into and run out the door, and found these at DSW. If I’m a bit more dressed up, I’ll throw on a pair of ankle boots, but if I’m dressed pretty casual, these have been my top choice!

My bag is an older style from Fossil, but I love how versatile it is from season to season. I wear these AG jeans pretty much constantly, such a win from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this summer. Essentially my entire wardrobe is interchangeable, but I love getting a lot of wear out of my favorite pieces.

More of my everyday favorites here and here!

Adorable!! Love the look! My favorite color is navy…and I love a red lip with it. I often struggle with navy paired with denim, but yours look nice. I have some Sanuks similar color to your shoes and wear them often! I think I’m going to go order that shirt!

I know you said the Fossil bag is old, but do you recall the name? I might be able to find it on EBay!

It’s called the large Preston flap. I have the same one and have been using it for 2 years straight and it still looks brand new! I love mine!!

Random question, do you put your AG jeans in he dryer!? Just got a pair, yea!!

Reply
Kate says · 10.25.16

I hang them to dry and once they are TOTALLY dry, I toss them in the dryer on the lowest head w/ a damp washcloth to get out any wrinkles and soften them up!

I do that same dryer trick too but…I just got a new LG washer/dryer and the dryer has two wrinkfree settings on them and pipes in the steam so no more wet wash clothes for me! It’s the little things…LOL I am in love with the new washer/dryer though.

That is a great shirt from Old Navy. I would not have picked this for myself if I were looking at it online based on the way that it fits the model. But seeing it on you, it is the perfect collar, length, and fit. You have all of the same criteria that I have when purchasing shirts as well.

Kate – can you tell me which baby gate that is in the background? Do you have the same one at the top of your stairs? I’ve been looking for one that isn’t an eyesore and would love your opinion!

Laura, I’m 99% sure it’s the 52 inch wide “retract-a-gate”.
It’s a little pricey but with our stair configuration, we didn’t want a typical gate sticking out. We have a more normal gate at the top of the stairs, and since it’s at the end of the hall the gate just rests against the wall when not in use.

How do you look so well put together with two kids? I can barely get it together with 1! I love the top and I must say comfy is the way to go with footwear and toddlers!

I had the same experience with Old Navy. Tried it out of desperation for jeans and voila! If you haven’t tried their Rockstar jeans please give them a chance. They are fabulous & hold their shape. Best of all they come in Reg, Petite & tall lengths & the price can’t be beat!
New to your blog & loving it! Thank you

Do you still carry a diaper bag in addition to a purse? I have two littles that are 14 months apart and look forward to the day I can carry a purse again. What do you do? Thanks!

So interesting. I am always on the hunt for linen-blend (ideally, linen and polyester) shirts because I find them to be LOW maintenance. They don’t wrinkle easily and they lay nicely when worn. Although 100% linen is a different story, which perhaps is all you’re referencing.

I love the Boyfriend Tees at Kohl’s. They’re solid colors plus also offering a few with the stripes pattern in stores. I actually just bought some with the stripes a few weeks ago at Old Navy but I tend to get tired of stripes quick. Its a love/hate relationship. However those particularly are really comfortable and a nice fit too.

I TOTALLY agree with you about Old Navy! I just had a conversation about ON with one of my co-workers today! Their clothes have changed recently in quality and style. I have found myself online a lot more than I used to! Also, I looked up AG jeans today because I remember you talking about them in an earlier post. Can’t wait to try a pair on.

I will have to stop in Old Navy soon. I have felt the exact way: love their clothes for my kids…me not so much. They just don’t hold up. After reading this I’ll give them another test run. Love that top!

Kate,
I love reading your blog and seeing the boys grow! We have a 2 year old and are expecting twins in February. I was wondering about the shoes you got at DSW. Do you think they run true to size? I was thinking about getting some so I don’t have to tie shoes anymore ?.
Thanks!!

I totally agree! Old navy has somehow changed the quality of their garments.
I have this floral pants that literally cost me less than $10 during a sale and I have placed it in the dryer by accident a few times and it’s still my favourite! Keep it up Old Navy! xx

I am so with you on the thought that ON sometimes is too boxy in their shirts. This stripey one is a hit though! I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and acted on your recommendation today! I had already liked this style online but then loved seeing a real person in it and loved your feedback. The best part is that I only paid $11 for it (I love a sale)!

Thank you for your mid-October wardrobe inspiration.

For a
Big spray bottle near other laundry stuff.
Prob about$2.99
Some pieces you can get away with simply seating and smoothing with your hands
If you really want 0 wrinkles, spray and pop into your dryer!

Jessica – see if you can find some of those sockettes with silicone (? It’s like a shot of dried glue gun glue lol) inside the heel. It really helps them stay up! Ive seen them at H & M in Canada.
