Project Runway Inspired Look with Mary Kay

Wardrobe Staples
A few months ago I had a chance to work with some Mary Kay® products for a blog post, and I’m back with an alternate look focused around what was created on Project Runway! Makeup artist Luis Casco created two looks for this season, and I chose to recreate the “Sculpted Look” for this step by step! The focus is on lips and brows! I started with a blank face of just foundation and under eye concealer. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-1 Picked up Rosegold Mineral Eye Color with a small brush and swiped it all over my lid, and added Crystalline Mineral Eye Color on my brow bone. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-2 I used the Black Eyeliner to add a strong but not TOO bold line to my upper lash line, and applied several coats of Lash Love Mascara, also in black. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-3 project runway mary kay_the small things blog-4 For the brows, I wanted a lot of impact so I used the Mechanical Brow Liner in Blonde, and then went over that with Hazelnut Mineral Eye Color to fill in any gaps left from the pencil. Since I used some powder, I set it with the Clear Brow Gel. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-2-3 project runway mary kay_the small things blog-1-3 project runway mary kay_the small things blog-5 I added a healthy dose of the Mineral Cheek Duo in Juicy Guava, which adds really beautiful color, to my cheeks. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-6 The part of the look that was most daunting to me was lining my lips in a brown liner. But I smudged it enough to really create what looked like a shadow instead of a harsh line. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-7 I applied the Spice N’ Nice lipstick and then blotted it with the Beauty Blotter to matte out the lips. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-8 project runway mary kay_the small things blog-9 project runway mary kay_the small things blog-10 The final look felt a little bit sultry, and I was surprised at how much I still felt “fully made up” despite going very minimal on the eyes! The brows and strong lip did enough work for the entire face to look finished. project runway mary kay_the small things blog-2-2 It was fun to follow the direction of a certain makeup look, while putting my own little twists on it (like really softening out the brown lip liner). It’s really easy for me to get stuck in a repetitive makeup routine, but I have to say I’m more open to dark lip colors now that I see how it looks against my pale skin! For more beauty looks and information on Mary Kay® products, you can visit their website, visit the Mary Kay® Project Runway page, follow them on Facebook, and watch their videos on Youtube!  And for a chance to win a Mary Kay® prize pack, tell me which makeup look you’ve tried and surprisingly liked in the comments! Beautiful look! I think blotting the lips made all of the difference. The color looked beautiful shiny, but blotting made it look like a beautiful lip stain. I have been trying to find a lip stain that color for a while. With the two boys I feel like I just kiss of any lipstick I put on, so I often don’t wear it around them!

I’m normally a very basic makeup gal. Bronze colors on my eyes, eyeliner, mascara and blush- that’s all for me. But one day I decided to put the bright red lipstick in my “to buy” pile. On a day that I found myself needing a bit more courage than usual, I pulled out that bold “I got this!” Lip color and although it was a shock for me to see…I loved it. And it definitely gave me the confidence boost I needed to walk into the office that day. I still don’t wear it often- only when I want to really go all out for a night out or if I need to boost my confidence to kick butt and take names 😉

You’re always very cute, but I think this makeup look is so much more flattering than what you typically do. I especially love your eyebrows. The soft brown/blonde color looks much more natural than the sort of reddish orange color you’ve been using. I love it!

Love those lips!

I used to ALWAYS line my waterline with black eyeliner, and recently tried lining with a neutral beige liner and eye shadow along the lash line. I was surprised how much it opened my eyes up and now I only use black liner on my water line when i am going for a smokey eye.

Reply
Megan says · 08.31.15

I love Mary Kay makeup! I use their foundation and powder – plus those blotting papers save my oily skin! I’ve been trying out different lip shades too.

Reply
Nicole Austin says · 08.31.15

I usually stick with a bolder eye and more natural lip color–mostly because every lip color I use turns out way more pink on me than the color in the tube! The few times I’ve tried a bolder lip I’ve been really surprised by how much I’ve liked it.

Reply
Holly says · 08.31.15

I never considered wearing red lipstick until I graduated from college-it seemed so contrived to me (apparently I was a teenaged snob?). But now I wear red lipstick for special occasions and ordinary work days alike, and it always gives me a lift!

My first experience with Mary Kay came in high school when our dance team had to wear Black Rasberry lipstick for every performance. This bright fushia lipstick would stain our lips bright pink for DAYS! My Black Rasberry days are long over, but I do so love Mary Kay blush in the Shy color.

So, I know you’re an “evening shower” girl, but I’m a morning shower girl and I don’t always have time or energy to blow dry before I have to leave. Did I mention I’m 9 months pregnant and it’s about 95 degrees every day in Chicago in August? Needless to say,I would absolutely LOVE if you would do a tutorial on “wet/damp hair styles” that are still cute. Something to do w my hair after just a towel dry. I would be sooooo thankful. I think my hair is similar to yours, maybe not quite as thick. My hair is fine and mildly wavy. Definitely not the texture where I could scrunch and go or just hang loose and air dry. HELP!

Reply
Heidi G says · 09.01.15

Agreed!!! Would love some options for wet hair. I usually blow/straighten my wavy hair, so suggestions for styles that could be done with somewhat curly wet hair would be great!

I used to use Mary Kay in my teens and early twenties. I haven’t visited this line in about 15 years! I typically do a very nude lip – like gloss only and only until it wears off then never apply it again for the rest of the day. I was very surprised to like this L’oreal lipstick called The Balm. It delivers actual color but feels like Chapstick. I reapply it throughout the day – which is miraculous for the girl who hates the “feel” of lipstick!
