Texturizing Sprays

hey thanks

texture sprays small things blogone, two, three, four, five, six

Β Texture is everywhere among hair trends. Loose, uneven waves or curls, textured braids, and soft buns are go-to hairstyles for a ton of women right now.

Using a texture spray, especially if you have the hair type that is really silky or slippery, will help build volume and grip in your hair to either wear down, or pull into a braid.

It’s funny to me how style evolves over the years. Think about the 50’s, for example. Everything was *perfect*. The hair was styled and set in place for the day.

And these days it seems like the trendiest hair looks almost slept in and very undone. And texture spray will help you achieve that look.

It’s best to use texture spray on dry, styled hair. Keep it mind that it may add a bit of weight to your hair, so if you struggle with your hair falling flat or becoming limp/lifeless, go light on the texture spray–UNLESS you are planning on putting it up anyway. Then it doesn’t matter.

I usually like to spray a bit of texture spray into my hair after I’ve curled it. That helps soften and blend the curls a bit, and keeps them from looking too perfect. I really like the look of loose, undone hair so texturizers are my best friend.

My all.time.favorite. is Amika Un.Done Texture Spray. I love the smell, the packaging, and the amount of texture + the feel it leaves behind. Sometimes texturizing products can be overkill on the first spritz, but the Amika Un.Done Texture Spray can be layered so you can build a customized amount of texture in your hair.

The heaviest of the bunch that are pictured above is Redken Wax Blast. I’ve used Redken products for years and years when I worked behind the chair. I loved Wax Blast for the right client. I find it’s best on short, medium density hair. It’s going to leave a really nice piece-yness behind, and also fluffy your hair up a bit.

Bumble and Bumble Dryspun Finish leaves a decent amount of residue behind, but in the right way. If you aren’t afraid ofΒ feeling product in your hair, and like how much bulk it adds, then this is a good option. Otherwise, if you don’t like the feeling of product in your hair, reach for the Amika Un.Done Texture Spray.

Oribe’s Dry Texture Spray is the strongest scent, I think. It’s a little bit heavy, but adds a nice, soft texture to the hair. Great for those who hate the feeling of product in their hair.

KMS Hair Play Playable Texture is light, layerable, and a good option for light texturizing.

And lastly, Oscar Blandi’s Texture and Volume Spray does just that–adds texture and volume. Spray at the roots and mid-shaft to create a really fluffy, undone texture. The smell is fairly strong on this one too!

If you’ve never tried a texture spray, I’d really recommend giving it a go. It can dramatically change how your hair styles in braids or buns, and also adds the perfect modern twist on undone curls.

I have just below the chin, very fine hair and love a textured piecey look but unsure which one would work for me. Recommendation(s) please.

Hey Nancy–butting in here πŸ™‚ I have just below the chin, fine, thin hair and I have tried four of the products above–the only one I loved is the RedKen WaxBlast—it’s the BEST! I wrote a post and did a short video showing how I use it in case you want to take a peak. Good luck! πŸ™‚

Kate – I am one of those who feels both sides of her hair have to be “perfect”. I am trying to loosen up, but am TERRIFIED. I so want to try a texture spray and bought the KMS spray a few months ago, but am scared to use it. I know this is silly, but I grew up in a the age of feathered hair and it had to be perfection.

Any suggestions on how you got your clients to loosen up and be a bit freer, or forgiving, with their hair? Any suggestions you, or your followers, can give are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Kelly

I just tried the KMS spray and I love it! Add texture and allows you to play with your style. It isn’t heavy and smells really nice too.

is there a big difference in the amount of texture created using the Amika dry shampoo and Amika Un.done spray? Or is the main difference just that the dry shampoo helps refresh your hair as well?

I need to try a texture spray! What I’m kind of wondering…how similar are they to, say, a flexible hold hairspray? Are they essentially the same or how are they different? Because I already have a flex-hold spray (I love Tresemme’s new Perfectly (un)done!) so I was wondering if they’re so similar that I wouldn’t need to bother buying a texture spray?

Hi, it’s very different from a hairspray – even a light hold or flexible/workable hold spray because the dry sprays don’t hold your style in place (flexible hold or not), they add bulk and grip to your hair. To give you an idea, depending on the brand used, it can almost made your hair feel like there’s a product build up but without stickiness or stiffness. It adds like a grungy bulk to your hair which is why you’ll see mass texture.
Hope that makes some sense.

So you may find that you don’t really need a hairspray when using a dry spray, especially if you can bulk your hair up with it.

I don’t wear my hair in an “undone” style, I’m more on the 50’s end of things with my bob that I want to stay exactly where I styled it. πŸ™‚ But I have to have some kind texturizing product to keep my fine, straight hair holding the volume and tease. I use dry shampoo on clean hair as my texturizer. Works for me! Fake texture is my bff. πŸ™‚

I really enjoy the Rusk Texture spray! It’s awesome, and I think probably the cheapest I’ve seen! I wish there was a drugstore or “cheaper” alternative. But I haven’t been able to find any!

I have been loving Garnier Fructis style Texture Tease. They call it a dry touch finish spray with a micro powder. I love the lightweight texture it gives my hair. I think of it as a texture spray. I can’t remember the exact price but think it was around $4 at Target.

OoOo I will have to try that next time I’m in Target!!! πŸ™‚ Thank you!

I know dry shampoo has a different purpose–to absorb oil. But I’ve heard you mention that you can also use dry shampoo to add some bulk/texture, so I have been doing that for a good while to my otherwise slippery, fine hair. How does texture spray compare to dry shampoo in that way?

Reply
Christina says · 05.15.15

I was wondering the same thing.

Also wondering if there are any decent natural texturizers?

Reply
Allyson Costello says · 08.12.15

Dry spray will most likely add more bulk and grip than a dry shampoo will. I use the Rusk dry texture spray and that can almost make your hair feel bulky, full and have almost a dirty feeling to it. If that makes sense.

I love the Bumble and bumble Dryspun Finish! I’ve turned a bunch of friends onto it too. When I curl my hair (which is quite straight), I prep with Living Proof Prime Extender and then use the Dryspun Finish as a hairspray. My hair isn’t left crunchy but instead volumized. The curls fall a little each day but are still there and lots of body remains too. Worth the high high cost! It also comes in a mini/travel if you want to try it out without plunking down $30. I don’t even consider it to be a texturizing spray, but I’m also not a hair pro haha

I am still new to using texturizing spray, but I’ve recently purchased the Not Your Mother’s texturizing spray and hope it will hold up to my thick hair. Do you have any experience with that brand? Also, do you ever use a texturizing spray in conjunction with a hair spray for extra hold? (Again, #thickhairproblems)

Would love to see something at a lower price point. I have the Garnier someone already mentioned but have only used a few times. I’m trying to work the beachy look as my hair is dry and damaged from blowing and straightening, but so far I think it looks more “wild” than “beachy”! I will keep experimenting.

I LOVE Oscar Blandi’s texture spray! This is one of the few products I’ve bought many times. I find it to be build-able. It’s awesome for getting braids different up-dos to stay in place. I have long, slippery, layered hair, so shorter pieces of my hair always stick out of my braid (in the messiest way possible). I also love using it on curled hair. It does have some nice hold and grip to it!

Hi Kate πŸ™‚ I have fine, thin hair and I’ve tried the Amika, Oribe, BB Dryspun and the Redken WaxBlast. The ONLY one that worked for me is the Redken WaxBlast. I LOVE it! I wrote a post and did a short video on my blog showing how I use it πŸ™‚ (I really didn’t like the other 3–the Amika was the best of those, but I couldn’t handle the smell LOL)

Hi Kate! Question, would you use this instead of or in addition to Kenra hair spray? Also, would you use other styling products as usual, and just add the spray at the end? How does the spray differ from Shake it! or other texturizing powders? Thanks!

Hi Kate,
Thanks for this post, I found it really informative! I haven’t bought a spray yet, but I’m always curious! One question I have though is this: can I still use a brush on my hair after using the spray? I have fine straight and long hair that I wear down daily, with side swept bangs. I want the texture but I still brush my hair throughout the day. Will this still allow me to that? Thanks again, I love your blog!

I love the Amika, the smell is glorious! My issue is that one bottle lasted me maybe 3 weeks. That can’t be right, or is it? I used it daily with the Bumble and Bumble, and I still feel like my hair fell flat mid morning.

I have the stupid silky hair texture that you speak of. I can sometimes manage to pull off the undone, messy look, and I have no idea why those miracle days happen… but most of the time I’ll have it looking nice, and I’ll step outside to let my dogs out, and the slightest of winds will ruffle my hair and then it’s flat & straight again! I have no idea what else I could possibly do to get it to, ya know, not suck. =/ I don’t like to put much product in my hair at all, because of the weighted down feeling. Any thoughts on why one day out of every 2 weeks my hair will behave exactly how I want it to, even when I change nothing of my normal hair routine?

Kate-
I am not really sure how to describe my hair but it not soft…at all! My hair is Burnett, pretty thick and corse. I like to call it tamed horse hair! I haven’t tried texture spray, but have loved many of your makeup recommendation, as well as the birch box ( I am now an addict), so… I am wondering which texture spray you would use for my horsey hair! I definitely do not have the same texture as you, so I am curious what you would suggest! Thank… Love your blog!

Hi,
What about Sea Salt Spray? Would that do the same job as any texturising spray?

Reply
Allyson Costello says · 08.12.15

Sea salt spray will add that grungy grip but not really much bulk. The dry spray adds both grip and bulk while still texturizing. You don’t need nearly as much either. That’s my best answer. There may be additional reasons I haven’t mentioned or don’t know about. πŸ™‚

I LIVE for the Bumble Dry Spun Finish but I may need to give the Amika a try. Some days I just don’t want that extra “residue” that the Dry Spun leaves behind.

The Dry Spun does leave residue behind right? I thought I was doing something wrong. Not to happy with it, might give Amika a try.

I’ve decided to try the Oscar Blandi texture spray for my first DIY updo ever. I would have preferred to try the Amika, but it took longer to ship on Amazon. My hair is long and wavy/curly, but it blow dries to a slippery smooth finish. I’m hoping this will work! Thank you!

Hi Kate! Love your blog. I’m a huge fan of the amika dry texture spray thanks to you. Couldn’t find it anywhere near me- so I settled for this Eva NYC Beach Waves instead. It is literally the exact same product. Same bottle, same exact smell, SAME THING!! Half the price. I did some research and it appears they come from the same address?? Anyway. Just an FYI to save some $$$!
