My evening cleansing routine

I’ve been practicing roughly the same cleansing method for the past, I don’t know, 10 years? It works for me, isn’t overly complicated, and gets the job done.

I’ve been using POND’S Original Fresh Wet Cleansing TowelettesΒ for years and years, but recently experimented a bit with their other varieties. I’ve been working with POND’S for some time now, and love that I’ve been able to dive deeper into their product line after using some of it for over a decade.

So, more often than not, my makeup is super minimal. But somedays, like if I’m planning to film something, I’ll wear a little bit more than just the basics. So, I have 2 different cleansing routines that I follow depending on how much and what kind of makeup I’m wearing that day.

evening-1 copy

On light makeup days I’ll always reach for a POND’S Cleansing ToweletteΒ first. Sometimes I’ll run the corner under warm water and just rest that on my eyes to soften up my mascara. The POND’S Evening Soothe Cleansing Towelette has been on my counter these days and I love the soft scent. It’s as effective as my all-time favorite Original Fresh Cleansing Towelette, but I have to admit I like the scent better.

And that usually does it as far as makeup removal goes on light days. I’ll apply a touch of fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream with Super 7 Complex around my nose for extra moisture, and then finish with my eye cream and heavy duty lip treatment.

On heavier makeup days, like if I’m wearing a liquid foundation for example, I’ve been using the POND’S Cold Cream Cleanser. It digs deep but doesn’t leave my skin starving for moisture afterwards. Because of that, I don’t top it with a moisturizer, although you definitely can if you need extra hydration. I live in a super humid climate, so sometimes if I use a rich, moisturizing cleanser, I don’t need anything to add to it! And then, just like the method above, I slather on a generous helping of eye cream and the lip treatment.

As far as the morning goes, I just splash my face with a bit of luke warm water and then apply my makeup.

My skin responds really well to POND’S products and I never battle breakouts with it. In fact, at one time I switched from the POND’S Original Fresh Wet Cleansing Towelettes to a generic kind, but they burned my eyes and left my skin irritated. I switched back to POND’S and all the good was restored.
Do you follow the same routine every night, or do you change it up depending on your makeup?Β

Do you find that your skin has changed at all since having the boys? Before I was a mom, my skin was fresh looking and had a “bounce” to it. Now, with an 8 month old son, it seems dull and lifeless! I’ve been using the same routine I’ve always used (the neutrogena transparent facial cleansing bar with the neutrogena oil free moisturizer at night) but my skin doesn’t respond the same way. Any tips!? Your skin is always to fresh and beautiful!

So glad you posted this. I just got some of the Pond’s cleansing towelettes on your recommendation and I was left wondering – Do I also have to wash my face? I have washed my face with a cleanser forever and recently seemed to be having some mild breakouts so I thought it was time for something new.

I love Ponds products and started using them because of your blog! I am 49 and love Ponds anti wrinkle cream that I use at night and also use the towelettes.
Your blog is my favorite of all the ones I read!

I was always a Neutrogena makeup wipe kinda gal, but my mom actually introduced me to Ponds because that’s what she’s been using for years and I love them!! They’re great!

I’ve been using PONDS cleansing towels since I started following your blog. Well over a year ago, if not almost two.
My night routine is cleansing towel, philosophy face wash and night time moisturizer.
Morning routine is warm water to wash face and light moisturizer.

I have got to try that lip mask! I have been on a mad search for a good night time lip treatment. Thanks for the post!

Love reading about other people’s night time routine…..probably because mine does not really exist unless you count taking out contacts, brushing teeth and falling into bed! I will have to check some of these products out for sure!

I have found that the Target Up & Up cleansing wipes are effective and don’t burn my eyes like some of the other generic brand wipes do (Equate, CVS). I personally like to buy generic brands when I can.

I love hearing about skin care routines! At night, I typically remove all of my makeup with a makeup wipe (neutrogena) and then I wash my face with Peter Thomas Roth cleansing gel using a clarisonic (2-3 times a week) before applying Origins night-a-mins deep moisturizer.

I might have to give the Ponds makeup wipes a try!

I agree with someone else who commented. I have a 1 year old and since having her my skin has been dull and lifeless. I was using Mary Kay timewise which I loved before having a baby but now I use Mary Kay Repair Volu-Firm Set. That stuff is AMAZING, and it has given me a more “fresh” look to my face!

I have a very steady nighttime routine that I love–and I do it no matter what makeup I wore that day. First I remove my makeup with my Mario Badescu Enzyme Gel Cleanser, then I exfoliate with my Rodan+Fields REVERSE cleanser or the F+F Microdermabrasion paste. Then I tone with my R+F REVERSE skin brightening toner (smells amazing), then I use my R+F AMP MD roller that is like have a facelift!! It is amazing… That gets followed with my R+F Night Renewing Serum and then my Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream. My go-to eye cream is the R+F multi-function eye cream. So popular, when it came back in stock on Wednesday, it sold out in 20-30 minutes!!!!!!!!! Craziness!! My skin is brighter and my sun damage has been reduced immensely! I have oily skin, so I am always looking for something to help control oil. I am pregnant and my nose is craving all things citrus, so recently I bought some cheap apricot-scented exfoliating scrub to use in the morning. LIFE-CHANGING! I have bought cleansers with exfoliating beads, but never a daily scrub. My skin has never been more even-tempered and smooth! I just use a gentle cleanser at night and sometimes use astringent if I wore heavy makeup. I moisturize twice a day because I read that oily skin is trying to overcompensate for a lack of moisture – that was true for me. Moisturizing night & morning has made a huge difference. Next on my skin care agenda is to start using an anti-wrinkle cream! My crow’s feet are getting outta control!

Megan says · 05.29.15

Apricot scrub and other exfoliators wit small, sharp pieces in them are actually really bad for your skin. I used to use the St. Ives apricot scrub every day, and I loved it, but then I read articles by several dermatologists saying those types of scrubs leave microscopic tears in your skin. I use a Clarisonic now. If you want to keep using the apricot scrub, I suggest only using it a couple times a week instead of every day.

Katie, I use a multi-function eye cream and it works magic on crows feet! I can email you more info on it, if you would like! It has peptides in it and that also helps with dark circles under the eyes:) My sister has a baby and swears by the eye cream:) My email is [email protected]πŸ™‚

I definitely follow the same routine every night unless I don’t wear makeup period. I use the Pond’s towelettes for makeup removal. Then I use The Body Shop Tea Tree acne line cleanser and toner. I finish with a moisturizer. I’m using a sample of an Algenist product now, but will not being paying $90 for the full sized. I’m thinking I’ll switch to the Cera Ve PM.

I just wanted to give a shout out The Body Shop’s tea tree line for all of you who struggle with breakouts. My skin has improved and it’s not super harsh on my skin like many acne products I’ve tried.

I’m so glad to hear that about the Tea Tree line! I am expecting, today in fact, the toner in the mail and plan to try the cleanser next. I’m 31, still have acne like a teenager and am desperate to find my “miracle cure” to get this mess under control and look like the adult I’m supposed to be/feel like.

I’m thirty and have had a lot of trouble with acne as adult too. I thought mine was being caused by hormones, until I went off dairy and gluten for some other health issues. Now my skin (face and bumps on my arms) has cleared up, for the first time in about twenty years! I had no idea food could be such a problem for skin!

Hey Jess, I don’t know if you have heard of a line called Unblemish, but it was made specifically for adult acne! It has worked wonders on my skin. I hope the Tea Tree line works, but if it doesn’t ..email me! I can give you more info:) [email protected]

I have the same problem with oil and acne and love clinique’s all over clearing gel and acne clarifying lotion. I use the drugstore purpose cleanser and alternate with a clarisonic acne cleanser and clarisonic every other night and that has been a big help for me. Clinique’s acne products are great if you want to give them a try.

I love Pond’s cleansers and moisturizers, as well as the face cleansing towelettes. They are wonderful and have never hurt or irritated my sensitive skin. But… I never knew they had an eye cream! How have I not seen it before? I have such a rough time finding an eye cream that doesn’t make my eyes burn, and since the rest of their products work great for me I’m going to go look for this eye cream today. Thank you for posting this!

I have finally struck a healthy “balance” with my skincare. Even into my early 30’s, I’ve been suffering from acne since about the age of 13. For some reason, it’s completely cleared up and I think my routine is the trick. Now that it’s summer, I’ve switched from a heavier moisturizer, to using just an eye cream, lip treatment, and Mary Kay Oil-Free Hydrating Gel (in the lavender-colored jar). I only use it during the summer because it doesn’t overly moisturize my skin, it soaks right in, and doesn’t make me break out. I’m usually not a Mary Kay fan… but that one product has really done the trick for me! I love it! πŸ™‚

Have you happened to try the multi-function eye cream that Rodan and Fields sells? It has peptides in it that minimize the appearance of crows feet, dark circle and puffiness. There are also optical filters that brighten the eye area! I absolutely love the stuff!

I use the same routine most nights. Cleansing oil for removing makeup, cleanser (I love the First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser or a gel or balm cleanser), eye cream, serum, (face oil most nights), face cream (I love Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream).

I have sworn by good ole’ fashioned pond’s cold cream since I was in HS to take off my make-up (mostly eye make-up) but I love using it all over my face. My mother always used it too. It’s rare that I see beauty guru’s or bloggers talk about it so thank you! It’s SUCH amazing and affordable stuff!

I believe that where you live and your age greatly affect your facial routine…at least that’s true for me. When I lived in the mid-west in my 20’s, I had to combat combo skin, but now approaching my 40’s I see the need for more moisture. I like the Cosmedix line of products and use the Benefit Cleanse which doesn’t strip the skin. I finish with Cosmedix Eye Genius and a swipe of nourishing lip treatment. On days that I need a bit more moisture, I use Eminence’s Coconut Milk Cleanser. All Eminence products smell DIVINE and work very well. Between aging and weather, I think we all have to modify our skin routines as we go!

Does the Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser remove waterproof mascara?

Reply
Kate says · 05.29.15

I don’t wear waterproof mascara so I haven’t given it that ultimate test, but I imagine warm water + the cleanser will work it off. The key to removing waterproof mascara is really soaking it in addition to using a deep cleanser

So you are using Fresh brand moisturizer now? I thought you were using Burt’s Bees. Or Garnier. It is so hard to keep up these days. I really miss your old blogging days.

Reply
Cindy says · 06.01.15

Agreed.

I loved the older format of hair tips & tutorials. The constant shilling of products is getting to be TOO much.

I am curious though…. do all these companies contact a blogger all at once? Is it really hard to pick & choose the one you want to write a review on?

Tip for Kate – I understand needing $$, but if you can’t say no to doing these reviews, maybe just do a disclaimer first you know something like, “don’t take anything I am saying seriously, I needed the $$ so I am going to tell you about another skincare line I have been using and just ignore the one I told you I am in love with last week.”

This is somewhat random, but has anyone had any trouble with milia, particularly in their under-eye area? If so, how have you treated them? I’ve noticed several that have popped up recently!

Yes! Shortly after I began using Ponds, I had two Milia appear around my eye. My dermatologist said every patient they’ve seen that had it said they were using Ponds.

I started using the ponds wipes after one of your previous blog posts, i dunno…a year-ish ago. I love them! I have also tried a few other brands, and always throw them out and go back to ponds. Target had a good deal on them, two regular 30 packs+travel size for around $8. I use a dove bar (also love) after the wipe if I have a heavier make-up day. In the morning, sometimes I use the “say yes to cucumbers” wipes to freshen up. They’re less soapy and smell really….awakening. lol Love your blog:)

It is a little confusing. This is how I am taking it and maybe I am wrong.
Kate has been using ponds and this routine for years, so this is her go to product.
She had the opportunity to try out the other products, tried them, gave her review, they work good too, and it’s up to you to decide which one you like the best.
I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these recommendations.
Hope that helps you out a little bit!

It’s actually really important to also cleanse your skin in the morning before applying makeup. Your skin renews itself overnight and pushes all the dead skin and toxins to the surface. If you don’t cleanse in the morning you can wind up with dull and uneven tone.
