My Mom gets Styled with David Kind

My mom and I matching in our Raleigh in Leaf’s

I’ve written plenty about my love for David Kind in the past. I love wearing glasses now that I have cool frames. In fact, did I tell you my OBGYN that delivered Luke (who also delivered David) commented on how much she liked them better then my old pair? Yes, she noticed that I had different glasses from 14 months prior when I was in the hospital having David.

Anyway, I wanted to do something fun for my mom while she was in town helping when Luke was a tiny newborn, and she had mentioned that she liked my frames too. So David Kind and I collaborated on a really fun idea and I’m excited to be sharing it with you today!

First of all, this is my mom’s debut video! We had a lot of fun shooting it, and I had a LOT OF WORK to do to edit it because we kept laughing and having to start over.

But before we jump into her David Kind experience, let me tell you why you should stick around for the very end of the video.

My mom has a shop on Etsy called The Dotted Poppy, and if you purchase a set of frames from a try-on kit, you’ll also get a free Dotted Poppy necklace! The exact necklace is called the Reanne in Opal.

So, here’s what you need to do to get one of the limited necklaces (there’s only 30 of them, and once they are gone the promo is over):

When you order the free try-on kit, you need to enter “TSTBGWP” in the ‘redeem gift code’ section of the online form. Then, if you purchase a set of frames, you’ll also receive the Dotted Poppy necklace!

If you aren’t a glasses wearer, or just want to order a try-on kit for a friend (or your mom for mother’s day or something ::wink wink::), you can do that too. Use this link to order a gift of David Kind frames.

Okay, now for the video!

Big thanks to David Kind for providing a pair of frames to my mom + working with her on the necklace collab!

How fun! The two she picked as her favorites at the end were my favorites during the try-on too. 🙂 I think it’s so cool that even when the two of you are wearing the same glasses, it looks so different on each of your faces.

Hi Kate! I LOVE your blog! I was wondering if maybe you could help me out with something 🙂 I’m going to my senior prom in a month, and I can’t decide if I should do my own hair or if I should go have it styled. If I was to style it myself, I would need to buy some good hair products, so the hairstyle will stay in place, but I have no idea what products to go for or anything like that! I live in Sweden, so it probably wont be THAT warm outside, but maybe around 80 degrees fahrenheit, pretty humid and most likely very windy. My hair is pretty long, and not very coarse, and I’m going to be wearing it down/half up. Do you have any recommendations for products that may be helpful to make my hair stay put all night? 🙂 I understand if you’re busy with your boys, (congratulations by the way!) but I thought I’d ask!

Thank you! 😀

When I first started following your blog, I loved all of your creative hair tutorials. I understand your life has changed because of having your two boys, but can I just say I miss the good ol’ days when you had hair tutorials. I think we’ve had David Kind glasses pushed down our throats enough lately. Do we have to hit up your entire family before we can just call it a wrap on that whole theme? Before I get a bunch of crap from everyone can I just say I am not a “hater” I just miss the days when product wasn’t pushed on us left and right and we just got great hair ideas!

I’m sensing a little hostility through your comment and I wish that weren’t the case! I, too, miss filming hair tutorials and am hoping to add a few more of those into the routine in the near future. I’m still figuring out a healthy time management with the boys + this blog.

You’re doing great Kate! Especially with 2 small boys! Thanks for sharing your life with us!

kelly says · 04.23.15

See, you’re ignoring what she has said. 🙂 and no hostility here! She (and others) are asking for less sponsored posts and more authenticity. I can get behind that.

I’d rather see 2 posts a week that contain creative content and less “here, buy this product, which I coincidentally got for free.” I also wish you’d return to the “small things”…there was once any understanding on this blog that family and friends and life were the most important things. Now there is an awful lot of shilling, unfortunately. And shopping. Etc.

I’d challenge you to go on a spending break and a mall break and see how it makes you feel. This blog has become…difficult to relate to, to say the least.

Marie says · 04.23.15

I so agree. I for one would prefer a more relaxed posting schedule if it were content truer to your brand (although perhaps it’s a fact that your brand is changing? It wouldn’t be a bad thing, but maybe just something to embrace). Don’t worry about daily posts, but perhaps more about quality posts and transparency in indicating affiliate links and sponsorships. I do believe that you intend to give us your honest opinion of things, but in the age of blogger excess, it can be hard to really trust what someone says when we know they are receiving something for free.

I think you are a sweet and loving woman with great things to share. Give yourself the freedom to slow down and take all the time you need to enjoy your family. Do we want to read your posts? Of course! But it is your choice to run a blog and that includes making any changes you need in order to optimize both the blog and your life outside of it. It’s my perception that when you feel pressured to post the material feels less authentic.

Congratulations on your beautiful family. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life.

Reply
Erin says · 04.23.15

I have to agree. It seems like every post nowadays is sponsored by someone. I can’t trust your word that a product is great when they are always sponsored posts. I love Maskcara primarily b/c her sponsored posts are few and only on products she loves. Her opinions are gold. I understand u are busy. We don’t expect more posts. It’s more about quality than quantity.

Lynn says · 04.22.15

I have to admit my first thought was “ugh, another person gets a free pair of David Kind glasses posts” too. And I am truly not a hater or hostile either, I just feel like we have been there and done that way too many times already.

Reply
Ginny says · 04.22.15

I agree. Kate, I am going to be “real”. I say this with all respect, and I swear this is not a jealousy issue…but it always seems (even if it is not true) that you are schilling for stuff. It’s like nothing can be talked about without having to tag the company…especially if it is something you are stating you are interested in or have a need for.

I get you do this blog for a living, but the apparency rubs wrong.

I really like that they send you 6 frames to try on! How nice is that. I’ve ordered frames online before, thinking I’d love them, then received them and they didn’t work for me, then sadly returned them. It’s disappointing. But, getting to try six pairs on is very nice. I love this. I need to get my prescription updated, but when I do I’ll be using this service!

Hi Kate!
This was a fun video to watch! As a fellow young mom of two, I love hearing about your family and also love to see how your approach to beauty/fashion evolves in this season of life. You might have said this and I just missed it, but was wondering whether you are committed to buy a pair of David Kind if they send you a kit, or if they can all be returned if you find that none really work? (I realize that the whole goal is to find you 6 that are fantastic, but I always have such a hard time finding glasses that fit my face that it would be a concern for me…)

very creative concept.

We all love a little personalized style, and I see how this concept nudges people out of their buying comfort zone to choose more adventurous styles. (green frames instead of black or brown)

Many of us spend a few hundred dollars on frames, and we do it hurriedly, typically under florescent lighting with a salesperson hovering over us. I have gone to the store eager to pick up my frames only to be completely disappointed and confused by my original choice. By that point, the prescription lenses are already in the frames, and these unfortunate frames already belong to me. Bummer.

I like that I could try these on at home, change my hair up, check out how they look without makeup, wear them around a little, ask a few opinions, and, really, test-drive the product.

Buying glasses is a COMMITMENT, and being able to test out the product before jumping head first into that relationship is invaluable.

Thanks for sharing a creative, interesting product with an alluring concept. 🙂

I, for one, appreciate the product reviews, actually, more than the hair tutorials.

Kristi Craig says · 04.22.15

I love the idea of being able to try them on at home, in your own environment. I don’t personally wear glasses, but everyone else in my family (including my husband’s family) does and I know that trying on glasses in a store can be overwhelming at times. I will definitely be looking into David Kind for my husband as he is definitely in need of some new frames!

Those frames look great on both of you. It’s amazing how different they look on each of you. I enjoy the mix of content as your family grows. It gives it a personal touch that you don’t see everywhere. Just curious, I’m foundation shopping…which would you recommend – tarte Amazonian clay full coverage airbrush foundation, bare minerals bare skin foundation, or Laura mercier smooth finish flawless skin foundation? It gets humid here in the summer but I have a lot of redness in my cheeks that I’d like to even out.

I’ve been considering trying the David Kind glasses. My prescription is terrible though, so I am leary about what the glasses will look like with the prescription lenses. The clear thin plastic lenses always look great when I try on glasses, but I feel its a different story when the Rx lenses are added. My prescription is -6. Do you mind sharing what your strength is? You mentioned your prescription was horrible but the glasses look so nice on you so curious how I would compare.

Thanks!

Reply
Meaghan says · 04.23.15

I’m at -8. I seem to remember them asking about the prescription strength up front and taking that into account in the frame selection. I think a high prescription is always going to have more distortion than the plastic, no matter the lenses or frames. But, I think it’s the sort of thing you notice that others don’t. I’ve loved mine – the lenses are very thin and work well with the thicker frames on mine. Also, the lenses were incredibly sharp — it took a few days to adjust, but now I am really happy with them.

As a mom of a 10 month old I have been an avid reader for a few years now . I do think that you have to make a living a I can see where the product placement fulfills that need. I will say I admire how you always look so put together , I only have one baby and I definitely feel pressure from social media mommies who always look so perfect and put together, do you ever have days where you feel like it’s just rough? Just seeking help in how you do it all ? I work all day and never can find the time do do everything . The boys are so precious and your family is beautiful!

Reply

This kind of comment breaks my heart. Please do not compare yourself to anyone else. I also work all day and have two under three. My family can not afford to fly up to help me multiple times a year. I’m not complaining. It is what it is. kate is a stay at home mom with family who can help her when she has something is simple (if painful) as strep. That affords her time to look put together.

You’re not going to find the time to so everyhing. All you can do is what you can do. Work, and then spend time with your precious little one when you aren’t working. Be gentle with yourself. 🙂

Kate says · 04.23.15

Thanks Beth, did you watch the video? I disclosed within it as well as at the bottom of this post!

Ginny says · 04.24.15

I think her point was you basically told her to look it up herself when you are already getting something for free as they are getting advertising. It just seemed kind of cold to the reader and David Kind.

Reply
Kristin says · 04.23.15

Amy,
I just called my vision insurance to ask. What was shared with me was frames/lenses purchased online would be considered “out of network”. If you have out of network benefits you can likely purchase the David Kind items and then get reimbursed by filling out a claim form. For sure call your insurance first to validate. I just ordered my trial set and am prepared to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed. Turns out it’s not much more expensive than going to Lens Crafters, for example (at least based on my insurance). Good luck!

You have no idea how cute it was to watch the cat taking his sweet time grooming! And then watching your mom try to not break out in giggles. Loved this post!! Picking frames is such a chore!!! The right frame either makes or breaks a face shape. I didn’t mind the “cat’s eye” frames on your mom…it looked like an instant face lift. But, I liked what she landed on as well.
Have a good one!

Meaghan says · 04.23.15

Fun idea for a post! I really loved the round glasses on your mom – seemed like they’d be a little unexpected contrast for her! Really though, they all looked good – even the cat eyes, which aren’t typically my favorite look.

Your David Kind reviews last year encouraged me to try it! I had a great experience – I’m terrible at choosing my own frames in store. Everything looks the same until I put it on, and I always found it to be a tiresome and confusing process. Having someone else choose some frames for me and narrow down my options was great, and I’ve loved my frames. I’ll definitely use David Kind next time I’m looking for new glasses, and I’ve recommended it to several others (including my mom and sister!) as well.

It would be neat to hear her wisdom on raising her family and life in general, her beauty favorites, being a grandma, etc.

Perfect timing! I had gotten my kit last week, I ordered the Raleigh in color Havana and applied the code for the necklace. I’m very excited to get both in the mail soon. Raleigh wasn’t one of my choices, it was the stylist Sami’s choice, and I’m so glad she included it in my kit, they are perfect. And the Havana color looks great with my dark brown hair. Thanks so much for introducing us all to David Kind, it’s such a struggle finding the right glasses!

Marion says · 04.29.15

Kate-
Love the video of you and your mom! It was fun watching you actually go through the process. I do like the idea of being able to choose 3 frames yourself and then the stylist choose 3. I really like the idea of having a stylist picking frames that would best fit me. However, I am a bit nervous that I will go through the process and not really like any of the glasses. I can’t remember from your experience or your husband’s experience but in the case of your mom she didn’t really like any of the glasses that the stylist picked out.

I also wanted to comment regarding some of the negative feedback you received on this post. While I did like the post, I would have to agree with the other commenters that it does feel like there has been a lot more product pushing because you have graciously been given free items. This, I ‘m sure, is a necessary evil with having a blog and trying to make a business of it. It is awesome that you get these free products to try. I trust that you are really giving us honest opinions and would hope that you would return a gift and give it an honest review, if you did not like it. I think it is just hard for people when a lot of the items you have been given to review are so expensive. They are great items but not everyone can afford the product. We are a one income family with four children. I would have loved a 4moms stroller or other product from them or a petunia pickle bottom diaper bag, however, I didn’t receive them at my shower and just couldn’t justify the cost. Maybe, if you added something to your post about whether you would really purchase the item if you weren’t receiving it for free given the cost.

I really enjoy your blog. I hope you are able to take all the feedback as constructive criticism and figure out what you want this blog to be. Maybe it is just a matter of developing a weekly plan for the blog….Monday hair tutorial, Tuesday product review, Wednesday mommy talk, et. I think you are doing this to some extent and I don’t think the feedback would have been so harsh except this is the third or fourth time in a short period that we are hearing about David Kind. No offense to David Kind!!!!

It has been fun watching you transition to mommyhood. Your boys are adorable!!! Good Luck as you continue on this blog adventure. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for your readers/fans!!!

And guess what, sometimes the sponsored posts get me anyways – I am currently doing my trial of David Kind thanks to your post about it, even though it’s the 4th or 5th I’ve seen across different blogs I follow. Sometimes seeing it multiple times is what it takes to push someone like me over the edge to try something new! As readers, we can’t expect every, single post to resonate with us and that’s ok. : )
