Battle of the Balms
Cleansing Dry Skin with POND’S
Winter is approaching and my lips are as dry as ever. The absolute final thing that I do before going to bed for the night is apply a generous amount of lip balm. My husband does the exact same thing, and his potion of choice is Carmex.
Sometimes when we travel I forget to grab my lip balm and have to use his Carmex and while, yes, it’s thick enough to pretty much remain in place throughout the entire night, I couldn’t help but feel like I had a heavy layer all over my lips. But I was finding my balms of choice weren’t really able to go the distance and leave me with really well hydrated lips in the morning.
Sure, I go to bed at 9:00p these days, but there has to be a lip balm that can last 10 hours, right?
I grabbed my dish full of lip balms and thought I’d go through the pros and cons of each one in case you, too, are on the hunt for a winning, hydrating balm!
I’ve heard great things about Nuxe Reve de Miel. I found it on Birchbox.com and used some points to get it pretty cheap!
I don’t love the orange flavor, but thats subjective to each persons preferences. Otherwise it’s extremely thick but it doesn’t feel like it really penetrates past the outer layer of my lips. So, I wouldn’t pick this as a favorite, but I can see why some love it. I don’t like the fact that I have to use my finger, and since it hasn’t turned out to be a good enough product to make it “worth” having to wash my finger off, I’m now looking for something that I can apply through a tube.
One of the balms I’ve been using most often is the eos Strawberry Sorbet Smooth Sphere Lip Balm. I really just bought it because the packaging looked cool. It’s hydrating, and smells heavenly, but it’s quite thick enough to last through the night.
I’ve been a Softlips fan since middle school, if I remember correctly. I saw their new cube lip balm at Target in “Fresh Mint” and was excited to try it out. It’s a bit waxier (as all softlips products tend to be) than I’d like it to be, but it will make your lips incredibly soft. I love the minty flavor too!
This Mint tin is an old product from Anthropologie. It’s really luxurious, but it presents the same issue as the Nuxe Reve de Miel in that I need to use my finger to apply it.
The classic softlips, in the skinny little container, has been my go-to lip balm for years and years. It isn’t as “healing” as I’d like to to be for really, really chapped lips, but it definitely makes them feel soft. I find that I need to apply a few layers to really saturate my lips at night, but I love using this in the daytime in case I’m going without lipstick or gloss.
This is probably my favorite type of packaging of the bunch because I can apply a certain amount without junking up my fingers. It’s heavy, and not sticky, and I love the mint flavor. I’d love to find something a little bit more luxurious than this, as I find it wears off rather quickly.
Am I being too picky about my lip balms? Perhaps. But I just know there has to be a really deeply hydrating product that I’ll wake up with thinking, “wow my lips still feel great”.
What are your favorites? I’d love to hear if you have an all-time favorite lip balm!
Ugh. I’m in the same boat. I just ordered a couple options to try and hope something will do the trick. Can’t wait to see what other suggestions are out there!
I used to use Carmex too, but only in the tube. I’m like you and hate having to use my finger to put stuff on. I can’t remember the name of what I’m using now, it has a bee as the push-up thing. It works ok, but I’m not thrilled with it. I would be interested in hearing what other people like!
Aquaphor- they make it in lip balm tubes now. Plus it’s cheap and a little goes a long way. Has a vasline kinda texture, but a bit thicker. Have yet to find anything better!
I LOVE Aquaphor. I use it every night! And I’ll even rub some into my cuticles or onto patches of dry skin if I have them. It’s a miracle worker!
I use this too! I’ll never use anything else! My lips used to crack and bleed and now I never have to deal with that again
I just discovered Aquafor and it is magic!
I like two lip balms that do a great job. First, Dermstore Lip Quench. It was $6 and you also got a second one free with free shipping. Comes in a small tube so you can apply directly from the tube to your lips. I use this during the day and it keeps my lips moist. At night I use Bite Agave Lip Mask. It also come in a small tube. This is more expensive so I use this at night and my lips do feel great the next morning. I bought this at Sephora and it was $26.
I JUST bought the Bite Agave Lip Mask to try it–glad to hear you like it!
I love the Bite Agave Lip Mask too! It’s my favorite!
I use the Agave Lip Mask every night and I love it. I’m glad they changed the packaging from the metal tube to this plastic one. The metal tube cracks and product squishes out the sides, however with this new plastic-like tube is hard to squeeze the product out of. So I think they could rethink the packaging one more time! (But I agree about pots, who wants to gunk up their fingers and get germs inside the balm!)
Try MAC’s lip conditioner. It is reasonably priced, will last all year, you don’t have to use your fingers, and it just melts into your lips. I love it.
I am also really picky about lip balms 🙂 I really like Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning lip balm with kokum butter. It seems to hydrate well, non-sticky, but doesn’t last more than 4-5 hours during the day. I like how it feels going on, it doesn’t gunk up my finger, it doesn’t have any scents or flavors, AND it is mostly natural/non-toxic. Has anyone been able to find something similar but with lasting effects?
I have been using Burt’s Bees lip balm the last few weeks and LOVE IT! The tinted ones are especially great throughout the day to add some color while keeping my lips hydrated. I highly recommend it!
The other one I love is OraLabs Chap Ice Medicated Lip Balm. I got a tiny tube from my dentist and I use it almost every night. I wake up with my lips feeling soft and fresh. I wish I could find a larger tube somewhere because I’m almost out.
I also use Burt’s Bees tinted lip shimmer. I love the little bit of color and that it’s medicated/healing. Meaning it has that tingle that lets you know it’s doing something! My favorite shade is Watermelon.
Plain old Vaseline! It stays on all night and my lips have a light sheen to them in the morning and feel softer to the touch. You will have to put it on with your fingers, but I rub the excess off onto the back of my hands for extra hydration. It is a multi-functional product! Also can rub it around your eyes as an eye cream 🙂
I agree!! I use Vaseline on my lips, face , and hands, especially my knuckles. I put it on my kids faces and lips too. I bought little containers to take it with me in my bag.
I use Vaseline, too – at night and throughout the day. I can’t stand anything waxy or heavy on my lips, and Vaseline is neither. I also rub the “residue” from my fingertip onto the back of my other hand or on a particularly dry spot elsewhere on my body.
One of my favorite tricks to re-hydrate my winter-battered cuticles is to rub Vaseline on each cuticle, then follow with a nice hand lotion. I usually use Curel on my hands, but when February and March roll around and the dryness is getting desperate, I use Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Care Cream. It’s amazing stuff – less than $4 for a twin pack of 4 oz. pots at the Walmart, smells a bit odd (not bad, just…odd), but it works miracles on dry, callused feet and hands.
Well, that went off on a small bunny trail. Bottom line: Vaseline is good stuff.
I am another Vaseline believer. I live in Alaska where during the winter if you don’t cover your entire body in lotion twice a day you become a scaly itchy mess. I use several different lip balms Eos and Softlips being two of my go tos but when winter comes I pull out the Vaseline. I have the little containers everywhere and a big one by my bed. I prefer the coco butter variety. When everything else fails, I can put the Vaseline on and have nice soft lips the next morning.
I am also a teacher and we give the kids Vaseline at school for cracked dry lips. It fixes even the worst cracked lips in no time.
Another Vaseline user here!
One more for Vaseline. Honestly I can put this on top of chapped and bleeding lips in a crazy thick coat at night, breathe with my mouth open all night because I’m congested, and wake up with lips on their way to healing. I’ve never found anything else that works that well.
Yes! I’ve had the most success with healing my lips with Vaseline (I constantly bite at them :/ )
you know what my favorite is? Lanolin. Yep, THAT lanolin which you probably already have from David. I don’t even have kids and I use it. It makes my lips feel fabulous and I will never use anything else at night again!
I agree with the Lanolin! It works great, and stays on. I also used it for my kids chapped lips before they go to bed at night. Works wonders!
I would have never thought of that, but that’s a great idea!
I also put it on my cuticles!
I’m a lanolin lover too because I OBSESS about moisturizing my lips at night throughout the year (and I live in humid Houston)! One time I was on a business trip in Phoenix of all (dry) places and forgot my lip balm. Horrific trip! I recently fell in love with Dr. Lips from my monthly Birchbox subscription. When I priced the item to purchase and saw it was 100% lanolin it made me think, “isn’t Lansinoh 100% lanolin?” Yep! So I can buy a huge tube of Lansinoh for about a 1/4 of the price of one tube of Dr. Lips (sorry Dr. Lips)! My lips don’t feel waxy, they don’t peel after days of repeated use and I love that they are still moisturized when I wake up. I may look a bit hokey carrying around “nipple balm” since my son is 5, but I’m in happy lip heaven!
My best friend JUST told me about this yesterday! My lips have been so chapped, I swear down to the nerves, lately. Gotta love pregnancy dry skin! I put the lanolin on three times and I was a new person! It lasts quite a long time too, though it does need to be put on with a finger. I have at least a dozen other balms and products for my lips and this is by FAR the BEST!
I loved lanolin, but the smell…
Nothing beats MAC clear lip glass for moisturizing- it gets rid of chapped lips ASAP, but it is SO sticky!!!! And I love the RoseBud Salve… but the pot seems to work better than the tube for some odd reason? My husband even asks for it when his lips are chapped. I just wipe the excess on my cuticles…
GREAT idea!!! I bet lanolin does work well! I have some leftover from a year ago that I’ll have to try. Thank you!
I’m a huge fan of Ava Anderson lip balm (just the regular version, not a fan of the waxy feel of the SPF version). It really soaks in and drenches my lips overnight! Plus, it’s got enough sheen to give a faint gloss when I skip lipstick for the day. I’m sure you already do this, but when winter comes around I make lip scrubs a regular part of my beauty routine (Ava Anderson also has a great lip scrub, but I prefer plain ole coconut oil and sugar) Lip scrub + balm before bed = super soft and hydrated lips in the am!
Kate, have you heard of Labello? I’m not sure if this is sold anywhere in the US (I’ve never been able to find it) but it’s affiliated with the brand Nivea. I don’t know what it is but all of their products are perfect! They have a few varieties of tubed lip balm that are all great, but my personal favorite is a vanilla macadamia lip butter– you’re right, it does present that problem of needing to stick your finger in a tin but it is worth it and feels and smells heavenly. I live in the Middle East now for work, so with the desert climate my lips are always dry and luckily they have the Labello brand here too! Nothing has worked as well. I thought I was just goofy when it came to these products but wheno studied abroad in Italy, almost every girl bought tons of Labello products to take home in addition to their other souvenirs! Such a steal!
I am Dutch and Labello is our number one brand when it comes to lipcare. Winters can be cold here in The Netherlands 😉 and the plain version with a blue and white package is my favourite. You can buy it everywhere here, I think you should find it online in a European webshop, for sure!
I actually never post a comment on your blog, bit I am a big fan of your blog and You Tube channel! So, by posting this Labello post, I might as well tell you, you have fans all over the world! 🙂
I bought a tube of Labello on a trip 5 years ago and have been dreaming of it ever since! That stuff was the best. It is not available in the U.S. I contemplated ordering some online but the shipping was CRAZY for such an inexpensive product. Next time I’m in Europe I’m buying all the Labello. 🙂
Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment is my current go to, pretty similar to Labello in texture. Very moisturizing, if I apply at night I can still feel it on my lips in the morning. Good stuff.
We can create our own buy-send-trade fanclub, I will buy all of the Labello our drugstore has in stock and sent it to the US. Then you buy the Naked Basics palette from Urban Decay and send it my way ;-D That product is a holy grail here, but it’s as hard to get in the Netherlands as Labello in the US 🙂
I have an exchange student from The Netherlands living with me. If you need something, perhaps he can bring it to you when he goes home in May to avoid shipping?
Hi, Labello is marketed as Nivea lip balm here in the UK. Perhaps it’s Nivea in the US also?
You know it is Niveain the US but they don’t have all of the same products! And I swear it’s not the same! It feels waxier? But maybe Labello just feels automatically more luxurious because it’s foreign, lol. I am all for a Labello/US takeover!
It’s Nivea in the US. I have the same lip butter in Vanilla & Macadamia Kiss and it’s my go-to product. I haven’t found anything as good and I swear by it!
Amazon carries it now
I’ve been a Burt’s Bees customer for years, but the Original just wasn’t cutting it lately. So I tried the new Burt’s Bees Hydrating balm and I am in love! It is amazing and works great and bonus, it smells wonderful too.
I gave up looking for a balm for night time, so I just use plain old Vaseline, or the little rose lips Vaseline product. My lips feel heavenly in the mornings!
I really like Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. It comes in all different colors, but they have a transparent color as well and I use this daily. It smells minty and I find it lasts throughout the night for me.
Last year I took Accutane for 6 months. Talk about some seriously dry, cracked lips!! I was in Sephora one day look for yet another lip balm and started chatting with a woman, she had taken Accutane as well. She recommend Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm. It was the only thing I could find to sooth my lips. I ordered directly from their website. I think it is reasonable priced, around $6.00 or $7.00 a tube. I only use now during the cold months.
I was also introduced to Cortibalm while taking Accutane. I was shocked that I could pay $7 for something that worked so well to moisturize and heal my dry, cracked lips. Now it’s the only lip balm I will ever buy!
The eos has been working well for me at night, but I find that a cool mist humidifier is the real trick. You’ll never have a cracked lip in the am, again.
Love Burt’s Bees! Even when my lips are really chapped I find that it works well overnight.
Try out the Fresh brand Sugar lip balms. They smell awesome and aren’t very thick, but they heal my lips in about two days. I love to wear the tinted ones during the day (awesome colors to choose from!) and then use the clear one at night. They are $22.50, but they really work and the tube lasts a long time. I haven’t worn anything else since I discovered them 3 years ago.
I’ve seen the clear one and have been tempted! Good to know you like it!
Sugar Lip Treatment is my absolute fave! Little pricey but feels so amazing on your lips – I wear it all the time!
The advanced lip therapy treatment in the white tube is THE BEST thing ever!! The only thing that keeps my lips soft and no cracking or peeling in the hot desert summers or in the cold northeast winters! I put it on before bed and also in the morning when I’m getting ready. It’s pricey but REALLY works. And when you think it’s empty…there’s a lot more product inside the tube below the bottom plastic edge… I use a lip brush to get it out once it’s down to the edge, and there’s almost another half tube down there that you can’t waste!!
I was hoping to see others mention this one as well, the Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy, in the white tube, is great. I love that it has no spf and supposedly has anti-aging benefits as well. Perfect for night time use!
These are my favorite too! For night time I prefer the one in the brownish tube and I love both petal and rose for daytime.
I LOVE, love, love Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment by Fresh! My lips were in need of some major hydration a few months ago and I’ve been using this during the day, as well as before bed ever since! It’s a must try!
I use the new Sugar lip gloss throughout the day and it has worked wonders! Got it on Sunday and my lips are already healed up – so worth the price!
You are definitely not alone! I have been battling with the worst dry lips for the past two weeks! Ever since the weather started getting a little colder here in Maryland! Yesterday I went to the store and bought 3 different types of lip balm, just in the hopes of finding SOMETHING that would give me some hydration! I did find that my everyday go to lip balm (eos, in a variety of flavors), works well as long as my lips aren’t super chapped. However I had to find a medicated lip balm to actually get some relief!
Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. So weird, but it works so well! I am not currently breast feeding, but I keep a container in my purse.
I’m not breastfeeding anymore, but I use this on my son (he’s 13 months) for his teething rash or if his lips happen to be dry. Love it!
I love Honey Trap from Lush… http://www.lush.ca/Honey-Trap/03856,en_CA,pd.html#start=3
Jack Black lip balm!! Use it every night before bed, and my lips are still moisturized in the morning. Was turned on to this by Christine of Temptalia.
Same here! Saw it on temptalia. I quite like it too!
Aquafor all the way. I don’t mind the stuff on my finger, I just rub the remnants into my cuticles to help with the dryness there.
Aquaphor all the way, they sell little tubes of it in 2 packs at drugstores. One goes in my desk at work the other is on my nightstand. I get eczema around my lips this time of the year and super dry lips and Aquaphor heals it all up!
YES it’s the best!
I’ve had the same issue for years….love Burt’s Bees but have to reapply often. Also like the Strawberry lip balm from the Rosebud Salve line, but the little tin is hard to get open sometimes and you do have to apply with your finger. (yuck) I’ve admitted defeat and now just use good ol’ vaseline. I hope someone else has found that miracle product to share here!
I’ve been using Palmers cocoa butter stick. The packaging is less than cute (it looks like a glue stick), but it works SO well!
I’ve used this too! Being a pre-k teacher, I always get people thinking I’m using a glue stick! hahaha It works so-so for me though.
Me too and it’s dirt cheap (bonus)
Lol, this was in my hospital bag for use during labor. It felt nice going on, for sure!
For over a year now I have used Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, Unscented formula. I initially bought it to use on my eyelids when I was experiencing an allergic reaction to some eye makeup, and my lids were crepe-y and itchy. This was recommended for my eyes and worked wonders, and I still use it every night on my lids to keep them dewy and soft. I started using it on my lips at night at the same time, and have found that my lips still feel hydrated when I wake up. It’s $21 for a tube and mine still hasn’t run out; I purchased it in August 2013 and have used it every single night since. Best 21 bucks I ever spent! 🙂
I love plain ol’ Burts Bees original. It’s minty, stays on, hydrates my lips, and is natural
Aquaphor is always my go to. I think I might be an aquaphor addict. I get the big tube so I have to use my finger which is kind of a bummer but I usually rub the excess on my cuticles which are always in need of hydration!
I agree! I read somewhere that Vaseline just creates a protective layer whereas Aquaphor has something else that penetrates and actually hydrates. I buy the tube and slap some on before bed all year round– a miracle worker! I always thought I liked waxy balms like Burt’s and eos then Aquaphor entered my life.
Carmex Moisture Plus! It’s not quite as thick and heavy as the one in the jar, but it really works on chapped lips – and, bonus, it comes in both clear and lightly tinted formulas! The clear one and the peachy one accompany me everywhere.
I like plain old Chapstick in the black tube.
My favorite is “My Favorite Night Balm” lip treatment from C.O. Bigelow/BBW. My lips could be super chapped. I put this stuff on at night, right before I go to get and BAM! Now this is gross, but all the dead skin comes off in the morning. I couldn’t live without this stuff and it last FOREVER. I can usually use this stuff at night and then my EOS during the day, but if my lips are super bad, I use ChapStick MEDICATED.
I’ll second “My Favorite Night Balm” from B&BW’s CO Bigelow line. Little metallic blues queezy tube. Smells and tastes like vanilla cupcake batter. Amazing stuff! Works everytime. I also really love the Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla Macademia. Comes in a tin but I dab straight from the tin on my bottom lip to avoid touching the product.
I third the my favorite night balm from BBW/C.O. Bigelow. This stuff is THE BEST. It’s smooth, not waxy, comes in small tube, and lasts forever.
Another big fan of My Favorite Night Balm from BBW/C.O. Bigelow. I cannot live without it. I keep several tubes in my night stand and use it every single night, even in the summer. I absolutely LOVE it.
Rodan + Fields Lip Renewing Serum helped me break my Chapstick/lip balm addiction. It’s super hydrating and makes your lips feel like new!
I am intrigued by the soft lips mint! Have you tried Vaseline’s Rosy lips? It lasts a long time, has a pleasant smell, tints a little and I really like how soft my lips are from using it!
Aquafor. I use that stuff for EVERYTHING… and it works for EVERYTHING! It’s pretty thick, but works like a dream at night.
My husband and I both love Burt’s Bees. I love the plain minty one at night, and use the colored ones during the day.
I swear by Aquaphor. I keep tubes of it EVERYWHERE and put it on every night. I also use it on my baby’s cheeks and lips which get so chapped in the winter. I love that it’s so versatile. I’ve never found another lip balm that works as well!!
I’ve not ventured past drug store lip products much before. I like to use Nivea’s Milk and Honey balm. I feel like it coats my lips well and makes them feel soft. I also like some of the tubes of Blistex. They look like glue sticks when it comes to packaging and applying, but they are my favorites right now.
I’m obsessed with the peach sugar lip scrub by Perfectly Posh. Lick to dissolve the sugar and you’re left with lip balm and kissable lips. And the Posh Lipshots are a great moisturizer too, simple ingredients which is something I love.
I don’t know if you get it in the US although I would assume you would is Nivea Lip Butter, all the varieties are good but I personally especially love the vanilla and macadamia flavour. I work outside a lot and in the harsh Scottish winters my lips and skin in general are under some real punishment. The lip butter is a life saver!! X
For chapped lips nothing works better than plain old A&D – the yellow ointment. If you read the back, its suggested uses are many. When the kids were in diapers, we kept a tube for non-diaper use. Its still my go-to 10 years later.
Burt’s Bee’s Pomegranate has been my fave for the last two years. Not heavy on your lips and not very strong in the scent/taste arena, either. It’s the only thing that seems to help with the DREADED corner splits I used to get during the height (depth??) of winter.
I’m all over my Burts Bees with a tint at the moment. It’s always in my diaper bag in case I find myself going somewhere and want to take the death out of my lips 🙂 in a pinch, it works as a substitute for lip stick.
I cannot live without Dr. Lipp original nipple balm for lips. I know, the name isn’t the best but this product is amazing! I put it on at night and it’s still there in the morning. It’s thick but it doesn’t feel sticky or goopy at all. And you can get it through Birchbox!
Jack Black lip balm! My lips get really dry, especially this time of year, and this stuff lasts all night long. I can still feel it on my lips when I wake up in the morning. The mint flavor is best!
My absolute favorite is from CO Bigelow- http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10951198&kwCatId=&cm_vc=200
Smells great, less than $10, and is so luxurious!
Completely agree – the Bigelow line at Bath and Body Works is AMAZING! The night one works well, but I usually turn to the mint one or the sugar rub, depending on if my lips are dry or just chapped and have some dead skin. They both keep my breath fresh and work like a charm!
Oh, and the regular original Bigelow mint in the green tube was an Oprah’s favourite thing, so obviously its stellar 😛
Aquaphor all the way. Put a thin layer on, rub in well, then a thick one. It lasts all night long. In 3 nights, guaranteed soft lips.
I’m in the same boat with you about lip balm. It can’t be too waxy or it feels weird, too creamy & it doesn’t stay on. I also have to be careful about ingredients because if I use anything like Vaseline (which doesn’t actually absorb into your skin, look it up! Just sits on top, gross!) or lanolin, it makes me break out around my lips. Plus when you hear that whole “women eat 5 pounds of lipstick each year”, it really made me think about what I was putting on my lips. I have tried a ton of natural lip balms & keep coming back to Badger Balms Lavender & Orange lip balm. It’s the perfect blend of waxy & creamy so you don’t get a weird feeling on your lips, dog hair doesn’t stick to it(important when you have two shedding dogs), stays on all night & I love the flavor. It’s not very orangey, more herbal/floral with the lavender, but since I have trouble sleeping I figure any extra lavender help I can get, I’ll take. It does come in other flavor, but I’ve only tried that one. I buy it at whole foods, but I’m sure you can order it online too.. Hope you find something to fulfill your needs!
My pick isn’t fancy, but it is rich, thick, and really cures dry lips….and you probably have some already (or will very soon). Lanolin! I snagged all the sample tubes at the hospital when I had my daughter just to have little purse size tubes! Not just for cracked nipples! 🙂
I am a diehard Kiehl’s lipbalm girl. I am not good about moisturizing my lips regularly, so when my lips get chapped and dry, I swipe this stuff on and bye bye dry lips! It’s so hydrating. It’s thick but really penetrates quickly so you don’t have that heavy product feeling left on your lips. And it’s fairly cheap and one tube lasts forever.
I have used a natural lip balm from MadeOn. I think the website is hardlotion.com. It is great!!
I use this too!! It’s just beeswax, coconut oil, & shea butter. Great stuff!
My current favorite (for at least two years now) is Nivea A Kiss of Olive Oil & Lemon. I know that combo seems strange but it really has very little taste and the scent is very light and reminds me of fragrant green tea. I also love that the tubes twist up similar to a lipstick tube and the balm retracts completely so that you never scrape off product putting the cap back on! It’s very moisturizing but not at all heavy. I use it every night and almost never have chapped lips.
But if I do get chapped, Aquaphor is my go-to like many have mentioned. That stuff is simply magical. When my daughter’s lips are really chapped, we use the Chapstick Overnight Lip Treatment. It works great for her but I haven’t tried it myself.
I can’t sleep without the Rosebud Perfume Co’s Strawberry lip balm. It comes in a tin so you have to use your finger, but it is thick and stays put all night. I like it better than the rosebud salve and the minted rose from the same line. It’s about $6 at Sephora.
Amazon sells it in the lip applicator tube. It’s one of my favorite day time glosses!
Thanks for that tip! I love the Rosebud strawberry but am not a huge fan of the tins.
When I was pregnant last winter it seemed my lips were so super dry and chapped all the time. My savior was Neosporin Lip Health, Overnight Renewal Therapy. Even though the packaging isn’t very hip and its not a very trendy brand, the product is absolutely fabulous. I wouldn’t put it in the same class as the “cosmetic” types you mention in the post, but I wouldn’t say it was like Carmex (which I hate) either. It’s really soft when applied, and stays put overnight. I didn’t find it gunky, and while the packaging says “healthier lips in 3 days” I would see significant improvement overnight. You do have to apply it with your finger, but I don’t think its gunky enough that you have to wash off any excess. (I used to rub any excess into the knuckles of my pinky fingers, which also got unreasonably dry while I was pregnant) Also, it’s not very attractive, as it goes on white, but I was willing to overlook that since it worked miracles. While I don’t use it as often as I did when I was pregnant, I keep a pot of it in my night stand drawer, and still hit it up anytime my lips feel parched. The next morning I wake up, and all is right in the world.
I second the Neosporin overnight lip therapy. Best stuff ever. And I’ve tried a ton!
I also use the Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Lip Therapy and it’s hands down the best! I know you would have to put your finger in it, but it’s not greasy/waxy where you would need to wash it off! Seriously, my husband and I cannot go to bed without it. I have to buy it on Amazon because my Target quit carrying it. It’s so good.
Any favorite hand creams? I struggle with very dry hands (to the point that they bleed sometimes) and i’ve tried many, many hand creams/lotions with no success.
Have you tried Aveeno? There’s also a hand cream called Corn Huskers Lotion that repairs cracked skin, but it’s kinda stinky.
I’ve been using Udderly Smooth udder cream for years! I get it at Walmart in the pharmacy department. It’s a lotion, not greasy. It doesn’t have a strong scent. My husband get cracks that bleed a lot in the winter, because of his work. I rub this on his hands at night. His hands have been a lot better since we got married! I use it several times a day on my hands.
I’ve used the unscented “No-crack Hand cream” from Restoration Hardware, if you have one near you, the little $6 tub goes a long way, then I sleep with socks on my hands… super attractive! 🙂
For very dry hands, try this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aveeno-Positively-Nourishing-Comforting-Whipped-Souffle-6-oz/14284738. It’s good.
I love Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Care Cream. It feels sort of like lanolin when you first rub it in but it absorbs very quickly and that feeling goes away. I use it on my poor, desperately dry feet and they stay comfortable and soft with calluses under control.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions!
I will look into it
Hand creams are hard… I have found that I love Williams-Sonoma Hand Creams. Great scents and quick-absorption without the greasy feel.
Aquaphor Lip Repair (the one without SPF)
Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy (in the pot)
My all time favorite is Lucas Papaw Ointment (in the lip applicator tube). I order it from Amazon.
I have SO many lip balms. I like eos, although notsomuch their new flavors. I was really excited to try the coconut milk, but I find it doesn’t hydrate as well as my blueberry one. Having said that, I haaate that only the lemon flavor has SPF! Blistex has always worked well for me – raspberry lemonade and orange mango blast are my two favorites. And, like you, I’m a big fan of Soft Lips! Thanks for this post…I’m always down for a new lip balm.
I was in the same boat: dry, peeling lips. Major ugh factor. Someone mentioned Vaseline out of the tub, but they also make a tube version just for lips: Vaseline Lip Therapy. I’ve been using it at night for about 5 or 6 years now, and it really does work. No more yuck.
Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm. That’s my fave for day and night.
The biggest thing when it comes to lip balms is ingredients. Any balm (or lotion for that matter) that contains petroleum by-products is not nourishing or healing in any way. Petroleum (grease) will sit on top of skin & not pentetrate. It well also not allow skin to breathe which is a part of the bodies natural healing process. Shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil are just a few natural ingredients that are actually nourishing & will absorb into skin. If you’re having to reapply lip balm every hour, most likely the ingredients are not quality ingredients. P.S. not all companies willingly provide a list of ingredients. Go to bath & body works website & try to find ingredients for ANY product. What are they hiding?
Have you tried any of the Fresh Sugar Lip treatments? I bought it in coral about a month ago and I have noticed a HUGE difference in my lips. They are mosturized and feel great. If you havent tried it you definitely should! If you do, let me know how you like it! 🙂
Mentholatum. I just order it on Amazon. It’s as old as our great grand parents! I’m a 4th generation addict! It’s the best for bedtime!
I love a good lip balm.. You should try the Burts Bees Lip Balm in ‘Honey’ or ‘Mango’ they’re so great! xx
Sarah Happ’s “The Lip Slip” comes in a tube and works amazing. Tastes good too.
I also love by Terry’s Baum de rose. Luxurious!
I also love the bite beauty agave lip mask and agree that the eos ones are too thin and the nuxe reve de miel does not penetrate past my outer layer of lip skin.
Wow, so many choices. I’ve never really put much thought into a night lip balm, but I cannot go to sleep without using one! The best, in my opinion, is Burt’s Bees! I love the minty tingle on my lips and I never have dryness issues.
The Dior Creme de Rose lip balm is my FAVORITE. It doesn’t solve your problem of having to use your finger, but I use the leftover on my cuticles too. It smells AMAZING.
Years ago, I was prescribed Accutane, which left my lips and skin super-dry. My dermatologist gave me a sample of Aquaphor, and I’ve been hooked ever since. It looks and feels just like vaseline, but is the only thing I’ve found to keep my lips soft throughout the day and night. I don’t go anywhere without it!
THE BEST LIP BALM EVER is Aquafina hydrating lip balm, comes in a 4 pack for under $3! I tried ALL the lip balms and none of them hold a candle to how healing and hydrating these are.
I’ve been on the hunt for something good, too, since my lips are SO chapped during this time of year! I’ll be reading through this comments for sure!
I looooove my EOS balms. I collect them like trading cards. Nothing stays on my lips longer, in my opinion. I wish it was a little bit more moisturizing, because I feel like I can just never get enough lip balm, but as far as staying power and therapy for painful lips, EOS is my fav.
Well Hello Kate – My go to products for evening lips are below in no particular order (pending of course of mood, weather, season, etc.) Also, since I keep these on my bed stand and use them at night I don’t worry much about dipping my finger in so I hope they help you somewhat even though you don’t like that aspect :
1. Good ol’ fashioned Vaseline
2. Honest Healing Balm
3. Josie Maran Argan Lip treatment (this is probably my favorite, it’s light but still moisturizes)
4. Body Shop Moroccan lip treatment
XO – Olivia Ruth
Holy cow! You use Josie Maran????!!!!! I DO TOO!!!! I seriously think that im the only one that knows about her products, lol. Kate you should honestly try Josie Maran Argan oil products!!!! Her stuff is amazing from head to toe! Getting a gift set from her for christmas and CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!! Im quite crazy today. Lol.
Sarah – I know it! Seriously Josie Maran does not get enough love for her stuff. I use her face suncreen every.single.day and her cream blush pretty much daily too pending what look I am going for!! 🙂
XO – Olivia
Omg i know!!!!! Her stuff is amazinggggggggggggg literally!!!!!!!! It makes me happy now that im not the only one who loves her stuff! 😀 i would love to try her argan milk.. i actually use her whipped body butter…… LIKE ALL THE TIME! josie maran makes me crazy. Lol.
Hold up…. Olivia Ruth ( such a pretty name!) I have to tell you that i just discovered your blog as well! Sweet! Now i have 2 blogs to check out! 😀 you seem like a very sweet person from the pic i saw on your blog. 🙂 i love finding new blogs. 😉 of course and i like kate’s blog too. 😉 ok.. i need to stop commenting; i doubt you’ll ever read this anyway! 😛
Hi Again Sarah! I have not used her whipped body butter yet but I have been meaning to try it. Now that you have mentioned it maybe I will try it asap! You are way too kind, thank you so much! I look forward to your thoughts and comments on my blog! Have a wonderful day!
XO – Olivia
I’ve used Aquaphor on my lips every night for over 10 years. It’s not pretty and it doesn’t have a scent, but it’s the absolute best lip product you’ll find.
Good old ChapStick 🙂
Try the BBW/CO Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm. I love it!
I wear different lip balms during the day and at night. For the day time I prefer the ones with color, and love Sugar Fresh and Tarte ones, or Burtbees. At night I use one that I got from birchbox: Dr Lipp, which is really good. You apply with your finger from a tube but it doesn’t bother me, I clean the excess on the back of my hands. I also got in one of my boxes a sample for Yu.Be which I take on trips and it is really good, really thick!
I make my own lip balms. Beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, joja oil and some essential oil for fragrance. It’s easy, it works and I know the ingredients.
Vaseline makes a lip balm that you have to put on with your finger but it is so worth it! I use it EVERY night!
I got a new kind of Chapstick brand chapstick a couple months ago in a Birchbox and really love it! It has two sides: one for day with SPF and one for night. It’s really helped to prevent my lips from getting dry, and I love the Night side scent.
Smith’s! They have a miny balm – and if you aren’t a fan of tin tubs, there is a tube-packaged version available. #addicted.
Ugh…. *minty. Not miny.
Smith’s!!!! I use the Rosebud salve, the minted rose, or the strawberry. The best stuff ever!!!!
I couldn’t survive a winter without my AVEDA Lip Saver. Not too waxy, not too greasy, great scent and comes in a stick, so no fingers touching it or gunky caps. I have been known to dabble in the Nivea lip balms and read about one above that I haven’t tried yet.
My favorite that does last all thru the night is Palmers Cocal Butter Swivel Stick. It’s in a big fat roll up tube and I absolutely love it – cant sleep without it actually! I keep one in my bag, and on my nightstand. I was leaving it in the car in the winter but not the summer or you will have a sticky, gooey, mess when it melts..:)
Have you tried using a serum? I swear by Befine lip serum! It’s not sticky and I seriously wake up with it still on my lips.
I have the same exact issue during colder months! Every night I GENEROUSLY apply a lip balm and hand lotion, plus I drink about 8oz of water. Drinking more water has definitely helped my dry lips and skin, however, I still need to apply products. I’ve tried many, but keep coming back to burst bees basic peppermint lip balm (I apply many layers) and gold bond extra moisturizing hand lotion…I think I get the kind for exzema because I really want a deep moisturizer. Recently, I found a mini tub of Vaseline lip therapy that I forgot I had and that has been my lip treatment if choice when in sleeping. Yes you have to apply it with your finger, but it stays all night and my lips are crazy smooth! I barely have to apply Chapstick throughout the day. Any residue I have left on my finger, I just rub into the back of my hand, since it’s really just Vaseline. Good luck! <3 Jessica
I use the Rosebud (Smith’s) Strawberry lip balm every night and I can still fee a light layer in the morning. It’s also magic for chapped lips and a raw nose. I usually grab the little gold tub at Sephora but I found it in a white tube on Amazon as an add-on item… it’s a little bit different texture than the tub but it still works.
I love this post! I’m always on the lookout for a good lip balm. Before bed, I use Aquaphor Lip Repair or Mary Kay Satin Lips. Sometimes I do a layer of Satin Lips then top it with Aquaphor. My dermatologist recommended Aquaphor when my lips were EXTREMELY dry from Accutane. It’s now my go to when I really need to moisturize my lips.
During the day, I’m currently using the same EOS lip balm you’ve mentioned in the post. Though I’m nearing the end of the ball and it’s annoying how difficult it is to apply at that point.
I love the Aveda lip saver. I stock up every year at Christmas. My nightly routine is Kiehl’s or L’Occitane hand cream and my Aveda lip saver.
At night I use old lipsticks that I receive as part of free gift promotions (Clinique, Estee Lauder, etc.). Some of the colors are kind of formal for bedtime (lol), but I feel wasteful if I throw them away. The only down side is that if it’s a really dark color my pillowcase will get stained.
I am not a fan of eos lip balm. The packaging is great but the product is very average.
Oh lip balms…they’re so tricky! I think I like one, then use it a while, and realize it’s not doing anything. I really struggle with dry lips (year round, but especially now!) and am constantly searching for a great one.
I’m obsessed with Rodan and Fields Lip Renewing Serum. It comes in individual beads (although I can get 2-3 uses out of one bead). It stays on all night and I don’t even need to use anything else during the day!
i’ve gone through every lip balm imaginable, spent far too much money until i was given a free tube of Honey Vanilla lip balm produced by Whole Foods Market. I swear by it. I don’t have to reapply every 15 minutes, it’s hydrating, full of coconut oil and honey of course and smells naturally good. Also in tube form and really cheap for only a $1.19. I stock up on 4 or 5 at a time.
Not picky at all! My two favorites for overnight protection are Bag Balm and Kiehl’s lip balm. Both require that you apply them with your finger. But, they hydrate allllll night long. Is it weird that Lionel Richie’s song just popped in my head? Anyway, I also love Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. The original. The colors are nice but I find my lips feel dry a short time later. Not so with the original. So, those are my picks. 🙂
Kiehl’s is the best by far – they even have tinted ones for color.
Natural Ice chapstick. It’s inexpensive, and I’ve found it to be the best. I’ve used it since my days at college in the cold, dry Utah air. I know many grocery stores sell it out there, but since living in Texas, I buy it on Amazon.
I just make my own – a little bit of beeswax, honey, cocoa butter. There are lots of recipes online. It is so hydrating and super cheap. I buy empty lip balm tubes to make it easy to apply.
I’m surprised only a few have recommended my favorite… Jack Black. It was recommended to me by a female dentist, and i haven’t gone back. No joke: I place on my lips each night, and it’s still there in the morning. (And I’m a mouth breather at night due to allergies). This stuff is amazing! It’s made for men, but the flavors are gender neutral. I’ve gotten all my friends converted! And they go crazy if they lose it! 😉 You can find it at Sephora & Ulta, both carry it in the men’s section- just look for the cobalt blue Jack Black items. They cost roughly $7, but last quite awhile. My favorite flavor is the plain Shea Butter one, but i don’t mind the other flavors at all. DEFINITELY give this one a shot! And why not get one for your husband to try too!?! I guarantee you’ll love it! 🙂
I honestly just love using petroleum jelly on my lips at night. Yes, I have to use my finger to apply it, but then I just rub any excess into my knuckles, especially nice during the winter months! For daytime, my absolute favorite is just the plain blue blistex lip balm! 99 cents and it always makes my lips feel amazing!
I don’t think I saw it mentioned, but Arbonne Lip Saver is THE best! I am kind of a freak when it comes to products with petrochemicals in balms and body lotions. So I keep TWO tubes, one in my vanity and one in my purse. Like you, it’s the LAST thing I put on and I mean I HAVE TO PUT IT ON OR ELSE MY NIGHT ROUTINE IS NOT COMPLETE!!!! And sidenote, Arbonne’s body butter is AWESOME! I stock up on it every holiday season. I will not use anything but this stuff! 🙂
I have PICKY lips – the only thing that they have tolerated for years is plain old Chapstick – the black tube…the original, if you will. 🙂
However, I was recently turned on to this by a friend who sells it and I love it. (http://www.beautycounter.com/cosmetics/lips/lip-conditioner-calendula-balm.html) Since it’s a tub and requires my fingers to apply, I only use it at night and it seems to have good staying power.
I discovered this with the same main ingredient and it’s great to toss in my purse for day use! (http://www.calendulaskincare.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=6)
My husband and I do the same thing! His choice is Blistex medicated mint (he’s been a fan since he was in college taking accutane, which basically strips all moisture from your body); mine has been Smith’s Rose Balm. I know it doesn’t fit your bill, because it has to be applied with fingers, but I use it as a double-duty lip balm and cuticle/hand cream since it’s so moisturizing 🙂 It doesn’t bother me to rub it into my perpetually dry knuckles and nail beds after putting it on my lips, and I love the light scent and luxurious feel.
The best lip balm for insanely dry lips is Aquaphor Lip Repair. Nothing else works for me. Eucerin makes it, and it comes in tube with an angled tip.
I have used Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula w/ vitamin E Swivel Stick since high school and have never had chapped lips (and I used to smoke which is super-drying). Find it a drugstore for a few bucks & try it out!
i use Nivea lip butter, they come in the little disk looking tins. In flavours Raspberry Rose or original. The rose one has a slight pink colour so guys might not want to choose this but the original is clear. It is quite thick when applied but not gloopy but by morning it’s soaked in and your lips feel silky smooth…. I’m in England so not sure if you can get Nivea in the states?… Maybe?
The only thing that works for me is Image OrMedic balancing lip enhancing complex. I put it in before bed and it’s still there when I wake up in the morning ! It’s full of antioxidants and peptides. And is also volumizing and reduces fine lines around your lips. I’m hooked!
I received Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 in a grab bag last winter and have really enjoyed using it nightly- keep it on my night stand and use as part of my nightly routine.
The classic Burts Bees is still my favourite. I love that it’s natural and I find that it’s cooling mint feel and moisture is what really soothes my lips. I miss it so much if I have to go a day without it!
The Rossetto Blog
Im a lip balm snob and LOVE Jack Black intense therapy lip balm in mint. It has a mint smell and slight tingle but it makes my lips soo soft and feels like it absorbs well. $7 a tube but so worth it.
My favorite lip balms are from Moody Sisters Skincare! Not only do they leave my lips feeling like a dream but they taste great and are made with natural organic products so I know they are safe for me.
Check them out here: http://www.moodysistersskincare.com/store?category=Eye%20Lip%20Care
Try LypSyl lip balm. It’s my favorite and you can buy it at most drug stores. It has SPF15 too.
My absolute favorite is blistex’s DCT. It’s different than regular Blistex. If I run out, I will drive all over town looking for it… It’s that good! I usually order it online. It’s cheap, too! Nothing comes close to its effectiveness for me!
My favorite lip balm ever is Say Yes to Carrots. Unfortunately the carrot flavor was discontinued (probably because I was the only weirdo that liked it). Fortunately their Grapefuit and Coconut flavors are good backups. I also occasionally use the Origins Lip Treatment at night.
It’s might only be available in Australia but Lucus Paw Paw ointment is amazing. It’s also known as “miracal cream” as it works on just about anything and can be used on nappy rash, burns, bites and cuticles too!
I have some great lip balm from beekind out of San Francisco. It’s bees wax and shea butter. I love it!
I find my lips seem more dry after using the EOS. I love the smell and taste, but I don’t think it is beneficial long term. I too am always on the hunt for a great lip balm! I hope you find one and share with us!
My absolute fave is Arbonne!! It doesn’t have mineral oil in it, so you know it’s able to penetrate through to your lips and hydrate them. It also doesn’t have “the addiction factor” that I swear companies use to make your lips even drier so that you have to keep using their product! I know you’ve used other Arbonne products, have you ever tried their lip balm? I think it’s the best!
I am a lip balm snob/addict! Its what I wear every day of my life. Boring? I know… But i have been branching out to lipsticks in the last few months… But, I have been using the same one for probably 5 years, tried others and always went back to Blistex – Silk n Shine (still LOVE this), but I was in CVS the other day and they didnt have my Blistex one and I knew I was getting low, and I litterally cannot go a day without my balm. I came across the Nivea -A Kiss of Milk and Honey lip balm, and I have to say it has replaced my Blistex!! I wear it during the day and put it on before bed and I wake up with still moisturized lips. It’s definitely worth a shot!
Either Fresh (Sephora has a gift set oof a couple of their products) of Maybelline Baby Lips Dr Rescue if you’re looking for something cheaper! Both I love
KIEHLS FOR THE WIN!!
Oh my gosh, this post was made for me! I wake up every morning with cracked and bleeding lips (mouth breather here). There are several options to get through the day with a few applications, but I haven’t found anything to last all night without feeling that “layer of junk”. Even the classics (Burts Bees, Blistex, etc.) aren’t good for me. I will definitely be trying all these out!
doTERRA’s Peppermint and Wild Orange balm – it’s amazing and all natural! Plus, the essential oils in the balm give me the quick pick-me-up I need during the day!
I love the Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment! Keeps my lips soft all night and the flavor/scent is nice!
I usually use Burt’s Bees or Kiss my Face, but my sister gave me a tube of Melaleuca lip balm recently and I LOVE it. I don’t think I would sign up just to purchase it (Melaleuca is a MLM organization), but I will definitely get her to order some more for me when she orders.
Most balms don’t stay on me for more than 30 minutes (I’m looking at YOU ChapStick, Burt’s Bees, SoftLips, Smith’s Rosebud, coconut oil, etc!) so I’m constantly on a quest for something that lasts a long time but doesn’t feel sticky. Originally, I didn’t like Fresh but after 2 weeks of using it, my lips adapted to it and now I LOVE IT! I use either the brown or white tube at night if my lips are not chapped and the Rose color during the day. (Note: the Sephora holiday value sets are great if you want to try this brand!) If my lips ARE chapped then nothing beats Bite Agave mask… it.is.awesome. A little goes a long way and I’ve had my tube for several months and I’ve barely made a dent in it.
All of those are a bit splurgy, so my fav cheapo options are Aquaphor at night or Rose Vaseline during the day (has a faint pink tint). I can’t wait to try the user suggestion of using lanolin because I just had a baby less than 2 weeks ago so I already have stashes of that around my house, yay! 😀
I don’t think there can be such a thing as too picky about lip balms! I am always on the hunt for one that can keep my lips hydrated in the winter. Right now, I use vaseline (although you do have to apply it with a finger which I loathe) or the Fresh treatment from Sephora.
Paula’s Choice Lip & Body Treatment Balm. Hands down my favorite and the last step in my nightly routine. My hands are always clean when I apply it so no fear of contaminating the jar. I do what another commenter said – just rub the little bit leftover on my knuckles or another rough spot (like my elbows). I’ve been using this for several years and have never been unhappy or searched for anything to replace it. It’s awesome! There’s also no flavor or irritating ingredients (like menthol). Paula’s Choice products are excellent — she cuts through the beauty industry fluff and gives you great products! I never pay full price for any item. I wait for my favorite products to go on sale and combine them with free shipping. Here’s the link if you’d like to read more about it: http://www.paulaschoice.com/shop/skin-care-categories/lip-and-smile-care/_/Lip-and-Body-Treatment-Balm/
Without a doubt my all time, can’t live without it balm is by Paula’s Choice.
It has no fragrance or harsh ingredients. We spend a lot of time up in the NC mountains where it is extremely dry in the winter, and I can’t be without this balm! I also use it sometimes on my elbows or cuticles if I have a bit left on my fingers.
Wow! Great post, Kate! And great feedback. This has been very helpful when it comes time to try some new ones!
I just recently tried the Honest Co. Sweet Orange Vanilla lip balm and love it! Especially nice since it uses organic ingredients!
Dr. Lipp from my October Birchbox is my new nighttime “go to” for bedtime balm. It’s actually nipple cream and works great. It doesn’t solve the using your finger problem though. http://www.drlipp.com
The Hempz lip balm is amazing. I feel like it will meet all your criteria, except it’s a bit more glossy than balmy, if that makes sense 😉 Anyways, it’s super hydrating, easy to apply and it’s at a good price point.
I love Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother with SPF 20. It has glycerin and soothes chapped lips better than anything I’ve ever used.
I have loved Dr. Dans chap stick! I used it when I was on heavy duty acne medication that dried out my skin, especially my lips. It was the only stuff that was able to help! It has sort of a weird flavor (like beeswax) and the “taste” isn’t great, but you get used to it. The benefits FAR out weigh the negatives!
I have used Mary Kay extra emoilent night cream on my lips at night for years. It’s really good. It’s also good on really dry hands: apply thinly then wear socks over my hands for nighttime.
LISTEN PEOPLE I HAVE FOUND THE BEST LIP THERAPY: You can buy at Sephora which has a 100% money back guarantee Ultra Repair Lip Therapy from Sephora.
AGAVE LIP MASK
TRY IT I PROMISE
HERE, HERE IS THE LINK!
I love Juice Beauty Organic Lip Moisturizer, also Dermalogica Lip Treatment. My dermatologist recommended to always put something on your lips BEFORE and after brushing your teeth. Toothpaste is very harsh, with whiteners etc. She said to try to avoid letting toothpaste sit on your bare lips. Carmex and other petroleum based lip products create a barrier against moisture on your lips, but they do not soften or moisturize. She said that’s why people often get “addicted” to the feel of those products. Their lips are fragile without that coating.
My absolute favorite lip balm is Chapstik – nothing beat it http://meowemily.blogspot.com
Kate, I got a sample of Dr. Lipp Nipple Butter Balm for Lips in a Birchbox awhile back and fell in love. Used points to buy full tube. My lips do not get chapped at all when I use it!
I am a total lip balm junkie. I use balms all throughout the day and I use an especially healing balm at night. The best I’ve tried is AloeGator brand. It’s thick without being gunky and lasts several hours. The best varieties are mint and vanilla. They sell it at REI. I also wear it while hiking and it will stay on for several hours in any climate.
You have to try it. It’s to die for.
Maybelline Baby Lips, the medicated one. I think it’s called Dr. Rescue.;
Blistex medicated lip balm! It has a cooling effect, and lasts throughout the night! Also does a good job with overnight healing.
Laura Mercier Lip Balm. Life. Changing. Expensive, but one tube has lasted me three years! Looooove it!!
Rosebud Salve or plain Aquaphor ointment.
I just got Dr Lipps nipple butter (?) in my Birchbox in October and I LOVE it! I do have to apply it with my finger, but I do it right after washing my face at night, so my hands are clean and I can wipe my finger off on my washcloth. It stays on all night and I feel like it’s really healing. My husband gets annoyed when I kiss him goodnight, though, because now he has “nipple cream” all over his lips. 😉
I’ve found that Aquafina has the softness of softlips but has more staying power, I’m not sure exactly how long though. However, a lot of people don’t like the little tingle it has when you first apply it.
WHOA! It just took me half a day to scroll through all the comments! Yowza, loads of feedback on this one!
So if you’re still reading these comments waaaaay down here at the bottom, my practical lip balm choice is Aquaphor. I know it’s heavy as hell but nothing, absolutely nothing, repairs skin like this stuff.
I don’t like eos because it wears off quickly and really doesn’t do anything at all to hydrate my lips. I think the smell, flavor and packaging are just brilliant marketing, nothing more.
My everyday lip balm is the pomegranate Burt’s Bees. Awesome stuff. Not too heavy for daytime, smells great and actually works.
Rosebud Salve is my favorite!! If you don’t like the tin, Sephora sells it in a tube too. I prefer the tin and after applying to my lips at night I rub the excess on dry patches of skin and get double duty out of it!
I bought the Vitamin E lip balm on Essie Button’s recommendation, and I really love it for both overnight and under my lipstick.
Aveda lip saver is the only lip balm I’ve tried that truly stays on all night!! I love the subtle Aveda flavor as well. I have heard great things about Jack Black lip balm, but haven’t tried them.
I know you have hundreds of comments already, but I would totally check out Nivea Kiss of Smoothness (the light blue tube). We have horrible winters here in Illinois and if my lips are super chapped and cracked, one night of Nivea fixes it! It’s a miracle worker!! 🙂 It’s so cheap too.
Smiths Rosebud Salve is amazing! It comes in a tin OR a tube. I get mine at Sephora. I use it on things other than my chapped lips as well. Awesome stuff!
I swear by Dr. Lipp nipple balm for lips which you can get at Birchbox. One winter I had the driest flakiest lips ever and it was the only thing that helped.
I’ve been using a combo of Smith’s Rosebud Salve at night and an eos sphere during the day. My favorites are honeysuckle-honeydew and the new coconut milk. The rosebud salve is perfect for healing up nearly all but the driest of dry patches that show up now and then. I double it as cuticle cream, so I’ll typically put some on my lips and move on to my cuticles. If I’m being lazy, I’ll just use the residual on one particularly dry spot.
I’ve really enjoyed Nivea’s lip balms! They are thick enough to do the job but not so thick that it feels like you have a ton of gunk caked on your lips. My favorite is this one: http://www.niveausa.com/products/lip-care/pure-and-natural/A%20Kiss%20of%20Mint%20and%20Minerals
Jouer Lip Enhancer and Sara Happ Lip Slip are two of my favorites. They both stay on through the night. Haven’t had chapped lips in years!
Aquaphor Lip Repair- my dermatologist recommended it and so long as my lips are relatively hydrated from the day ( I use Caudalie lip protector)- the Aquaphor keeps things moist.
I really like Aquafina’s lip balm. It comes in a variety of flavors, goes on smooth, not waxy, hydrates well, and lasts for a few hours. Bonus: it’s cheap!
I can’t say enough about Philosophy’s Lip Shine glosses! I’ve been using them for more than 6 years and haven’t had chapped lips at all! And the scents you can choose from are awesome!
I love Burts bees pomegranate lip balm! But just discovered mint lip balms from Sweet Bliss Sugar Scrubs on etsy and have been wanting to try it out
My two favorites are Jack Black (I get them at Ulta or Sephora- the mint is my fave) and Philosophy’s Kiss Me in clear. They are both super emollient. I do love carrying an EOS in my purse, too.
xo Always, Abby
Biggs and Featherbell makes wonderful lip balms full of natural ingredients. They are called Eskimo Kiss and Soul Kiss – they also have a great belly balm to prevent stretch marks! website is biggsandfeather.com.
Reve De Miel is also sold in a tube version, but as I understand it the formula isn’t quite the same. The pot version of it is my very favorite lip balm! I love everything about it
Allison from http://www.mercuteify.com
Kate! I learned so much from your post and all these helpful comments – thanks! Now would you please ask everyone to offer their favorite hand cream/lotion? Something not sticky and really repairs dried out skin and cuticles? Help please!
You should totally try the eos Mint. By far the best…I love a good tingle in my lip balm and this one you can feel working whenever you put it on. I haven’t had much success with the other flavor, but I can’t go a day without my mint one!
I love the Jack Black balm in “natural mint” It is the most moisturizing for me, comes in a squeeze tube for no mess, and lasts all night. I also love how cooling it is. I used it all last winter, and just repurchased it, It’s awesome!
My favorite lip balm is Neutrogena’s Revitalizing Lip Balm. My lips tend to get really dry, chapped, and cracked during the winter and this keeps them nice and healthy.
Have you tried Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm for Lips? Weird, weird, and slightly uncomfortable name, but it is amazing! I got a small tube in my Birchbox last month and ended up buying a full tube because it works so great. It’s a little on the thick side, but has a silky texture. Also a little goes a long way, which is good because it’s on the pricier side. My lips feel so hydrated in the morning and feel great throughout the day. I learned that this lip balm is made of 100% pharmeceutical grade lanolin and it repares and moisturizes better than most lip balms because lanolin is the closest thing to our natural body oils. Might want to check it out. My only complaint is that it is odorless and I love fruity lip balms, but I can overlook that because it has been my saving grace. Ha!
I’m a longtime fan of Burts Bees original. I have tubes stashed everywhere. I think it’s perfect. I’m not a fan of all their variations. I like to stick to the original. But then I saw the coconut on your sister’s blog & gave it a try. I really like it too!
My favorite is Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balms. I found it at sephora several years ago and I’ve pretty much gotten rid of everything else and just use these http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004UDDZEG/ref=twister_B00ED2XD4G
I just can never seem to have enough lip balms! I love the eos ones, especially the mint one for Winter! My favorite lip balm would have to be Fresh Sugar! It’s so moisturizing and nourishing! Great blog post 🙂
Natural Ice chapstick. I know it was mentioned before, but I totally agree. I have tried many other brands but always come back to Natural Ice. It is the only thing that feels healing to extremely chapped lips and doesn’t leave me feeling the need to constantly reapply. I prefer the cherry flavor 🙂
Clinique’s Superbalm Lip Treatment works great. It’s $15 a tube, but I think it’s totally worth it.
Cult Australian balm PawPaw is really good as is Lanolips lip balm in a tube.
I am currently trying Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour cream/balm which I also learned can be used as a gentle lip exfoliant by putting the product on your lips and then gently but firmly rolling a cotton bud (Qtip) back and forth over your lips… And it works! It gently removes any rough, dry or loose bits of skin without destroying your lips.
I’ve heard the Creme de la Mer balm is excellent but it is very expensive.
I love Filthy Farmgirl Smoochie Lip Balm in Tiger Chai. It’s $4.00 a tube, 100% natural ingredients, and free shipping anywhere in the U.S.
By far one of the most moisturizing lip balms I have ever used!
Palmers Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick!! It’s the best
I’ve been wanting to try the EOS lipbalm for as long as I can remember and there are so many mix reviews on this product. Some says it drying while others claims it to be moisturising. Its not easy to find this product in Singapore and I’m debating whether I should spend time searching for it instead of going for other more accessible balms such as Maybelline Baby Lips or whatever that’s call.
I think I’ll go for it though as I trust your recommendation 🙂
I wanted to love it, but it’s my least favorite lip balm. It’s so drying!
I am completely in love with the balm ‘Lippengold’ by Dr. Hauschka. it is the easiest way to apply as it comes as a stick and also has this rich, healthy feeling on the lips.
I’m not sure, but it must be possible to buy it also in the US. I am writing from Germany and here this is definitely my favourite. all the labello sticks that we have here a lot are not even Close to the Dr. Hauschka stick. you should really try it! it is a real game changer and also beautiful to use underneath a chubby stick or other coloured lipstick.
let me know if you can find it! Actually I came across it when I watched a make up tutorial by monika blunder (check her you tube channel, she is great! hollywoold make up Artist)
bye bye 🙂
Love Nuxe Rêve de Miel! Lilly xx http://alittlelilly.blogspot.nl/
I wanted to try the NUXE lipbalm as everyone’s raving about it!
My favourite’s the EOS one though!
Lately I have been using Dr. Lipps nipple ball for lips. I got it in a birchbox a while back but just recently rediscovered it. It is very thick when you apply so I feels quite luxurious, but I’m not sure that it is actually penetrating the skin. Either way, I’m giving it a try until I’m out of the sample tube.
My true go to is “My favorite night balm” by C O Bigelow. It lasts all night (I actually have to wash it off with the rest of my face in the morning) and i feel like I am getting a good treatment from a relatively inexpensive product. I highly recommend this one!
I bought a big tub of aquaphor. I use it every night before I go to bed, and it’s still there when I wake up in the morning. It’s not fancy, but it works great!
One word; AQUAPHOR healing ointment.
Look it up. Try it, you wiil be surprised.
I love the original softlips in cherry, of course they don’t make that flavor/scent anymore. Wish they would has been my go to lip care for about 20 years. Otherwise I’m boring and use chapstick, but usually only at night cuz it’s too heavy feeling for daytime wear.
I love the Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Butter for Lips. It’s sounds a bit crazy, but it’s amazing! I found it through birchbox and had to buy the bigger tube!
My coworker and I received a sample of that product through Birchbox. We both love it! I really is great.
Do you have a lip exfoliator that you use at all?
Just mix some Olive Oil with sugar…works well for me!
I recently made a lip purchase at Paula’s Choice, I am not sure if you have heard of them but they are skin care company that only sells their goods via their website. I really like it. Check it out!
Lucas’ Paw Paw ointment is a must! And you can get it on Amazon! I’m also eager to try out the Bite Lip Mask.
You can never be too picky about lip balms. I’ve tried my fair share. I totally agree about the EOS balms, my favorite is the mint which seems to work the best for me. Such cute packaging but it doesn’t really cut it. I have also tried Baby Lips and it just doesn’t seem to put a thick enough layer on. I really love Lypsyl Bee Smooth balm (like a minty smell & flavor, comes in a twist tube), Burt’s Bees balms, and Aquaphor Lip Repair (no particular flavor and comes in a squeeze tube). I use many others temporarily throughout the day but these seem to work the best for me. Good luck finding the right one for you!
Kiehl’s Eucalyptus Lip Relief works great!! It’s perfect for night time. Try it out. http://www.kiehls.com/Lip-Relief/527,default,pd.html?cgid=face-eye&cm_vc=Search&start=6&q=lip%20balm
Great post! This winter weather is really taking its toll on my skin and lips and it is only the beginning of November. I like Air Repair Rescue Balm. I got it as a sample in my Birchbox one month.
It must just be me, but the Bite lip mask doesn’t seem to work for me. It just sits on the lips and sometimes my lips have been more chapped in the morning after using it. I don’t know if I am using too much or what. I like the vaseline lip balm, but recently order the Fresh Sugar Advanced Lip Therapy during the VIB sale. I can’t wait to try it!
I was having chapped/cracked lips issues and my dermatologist had me use Aquaphor made by Eucerin. It comes in a tube made for lips, also. I. WON’T. USE. ANYTHING. ELSE!
I also love Epic balm very much- my favorite is at the moment: banana-pineapple but I think that is a limited edition. The eos raspberry is fabulous too.
You should try Khiels. Its awesome. Eos makes my lips dry when I use it too much
check me out
I love the Lip Conditioner Peppermint Balm from Beautycounter. It lasts throughout the day or night with just one application. Please it’s a great flavor!
I love the Lip Conditioner Peppermint Balm from Beautycounter. It lasts throughout the day or night with just one application. Plus it’s a great flavor!
Sweet Mint from EOS! Oh man, it blows everything out of the water in my opinion. I love the way it feels. It’s really moisturizing and healing (I live in dry dry DRY Utah, so I think that says something ;D ). It also smells amazing.
Chapstick brand chapstick. It’s the best and cheap.
I LOVE the Nuxe balm! I imagine you got it because Essiebutton always raves about it. I always just rub the leftovers on my cuticles…
When my lips are destroyed in the middle of winter, the ONLY thing that helps them is Body Shop Hemp Lip Balm. Seriously a life saver!
I’ve been using Burt’s Bees for years thanks to my mom buying it for Christmas one year for me. I used to use one that was discontinued. Now, I just use the main one, not sure what it’s called-just the plain scented one. I love it so much!
Far and away, Smith’s Rosebud Salve is my forever favorite. I’ve even turned my husband and six-year-old daughter into addicts right along with me. It comes in a tin, but also in a tube for no-gunky-fingers application. I was super excited when they came out with the tube, as it also won’t melt in the summer and potentially get all over my car like the tin used to. I find that it definitely lasts all night, and the rose scent is nice, but not too strong…
Aquaphor Lip Repair! Really hydrating with cocoa butter and comes in a sqeezie tube!
I find Smith’s Rosebud Salve works wonders and tastes nice too. If you need the big guns however try Vermont’s Original Bag Balm. Okay so that one is used for chapped cow teats and is pretty thick, but I swear it works!
I feel like I’ve tried them all, too! I’m very particular about texture…even with lip glosses. But as for balms, it’s Burt’s Bees all the way for me! I was addicted to their honey lip balm for the longest time (honey lotion, too). But I got a little tired of the scent…it was a little overpowering for me (I’m very sensitive to fragrance). So now I’m all about their coconut balm. I’m a huge coconut lover anyway, but it’s very subtle. The texture is just right: not at all sticky, not too thick/not too thin, wears off gradually but without leaving a residue.
The best lip balm/chap stick I’ve found that actually works (instead of just feeling good for an hour or so) is from the “Made On” brand. It is very simple but it stays all night! It doesn’t seem sticky or gunky to me, but maybe the texture just doesn’t bother me. The only ingredients are coconut oil, shea butter, and and beeswax (then whatever essential oil you want for flavor). You should give it a try! http://store.hardlotion.com/Lip_Balms_s/1827.htm
Love this post. Where is the cute glass box from?! I love that you can close the lid to keep dust at bay! :))
Love your blog and this post. Dry weather is a killer for my lips. Try Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Lip Silk. It’s in a tube, the consistency is a little different, but it is amazing. I use it every night, keeps my lips protected and moisturized
I’m a big fan of shea butter when I want something thicker and coconut oil for a sheer gloss.
I’m a lip balm aholic. Somehow my favorites for night time always end up being the ones you have to apply with your fingers.
philosophy lip balm is wonderful
Last year I discovered Nivea and now that’s my go-to night balm. It’s in a tin and they have it beside the lotion (so stinkin random) at Target. It’s not with the lip balms – well, their twisty-uppy one is but not the tin.
I use just regular coconut oil for everything before bed. It helps heal my lips, and it last until the morning. I also use it if my face is really dry, as well as for my hands and feet. You can get it in a fairly large container and it lasts forever! I separated mine into a few different containers, a smaller one for my lips at night, a medium sized one for my face, and left the remained in the original packaging for my feet, elbows, and hands. It is a miracle worker!!! It may not be a name brand product, but it works!!!
BurtsBees also has some wonderful medicated chapsticks, but I do not use them for overnight.
I recently had a bought of EXTREMELY dry lips. Dry to the point of pain and all chap stick burned! I tried the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm from Sephora! Heaven! It didn’t burn and it really helped the dryness. It comes in a few different flavors but my favorite is the Grapefruit and Ginger! It is seriously a lifesaver and it lasts all night and for an added bonus it has SPF 25!!!
I use Aquaphor at night! I also need something in a tube. I love that it really moisturizes my lips, but I’ll also dab some on my face (like if I’m having to blow my nose a lot and my nose gets super dry). During the day, I love softlips and Coola Liplux (I got it from Birchbox).
Aquaphor lip repair is my end all lip balm/hydrating lip product. All the other stuff I tried made my lips feel waxy or actually made them feel even more dried out if I didn’t constantly re-apply every few hours. I use Aquaphor before going to bed at night and once in the morning with a couple swipes of eos throughout the day. Something about eos that I just realized today – the white swirled eggs with the coconut milk seem way waxier and less moisturizing than the regular kind. I just bought the vanilla mint egg and my lips are feeling waxy and dry 🙁
I am a burts bees girl to the end. The original, I don’t think the others work as well, they smell good but seem thinner to me. I also got Dr. Lipp Nipple balm in my Burch box last month and have really liked that. As well as the hand cream that was in there, Camille Beckman Tuscan Honey. I live in Colorado, and my hands get so dry they start to crack!!! But, I always have aquaphor with me too. It last a long time, and I can use it on my hands, and lips. I had to use this on my face in high school during swim team.
Just some other things I notice that help- this is probably common sense but increasing your water intake does wonders for chapped lips. Especially if I drink a glass right before bed (or maybe half so you don’t have to get up to use the bathroom!) I find that my lips aren’t nearly as dry. Also when I use my Clarisonic I use it on my lips too to get rid of the dry skin, which helps the Aquaphor absorb.
I can’t believe you don’t like the Nuxe! That is my holy grail lip balm! I don’t know what I did before I found it. My lips always get really bad in the winter and this is the only thing that keeps them from cracking and peeling. Love. It.
Choice #1 – Burts Bees Choice #2 – Vasoline Choice #3 Aquafore
The EOS Cool Mint is a much longer lasting product than the Strawberry Sorbet! I can sleep for up to 12 hours and still wake up with moisturized and soft lips! 🙂
I really suggest using Nipple Butter at night…or even during the day! I use Medela’s nipple cream. Why not, right? It is for “dry, cracked nipples” why wouldn’t it work on “dry, cracked lips.” AND IT DOES! My lips are very very dry, like bleeding in the night dry. At night, I use Olive Oil and sugar to scrub off the excess dead skin then apply a generous amount of nipple butter. Within an hour of my first-ever use, my lips were like butter themselves! Totally weird, but totally amazing!!
You should try Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream. You’ll be amazed at using it as a lip balm overnight.
My absolute favorite lip balm is this one. I have never, ever used a balm like it. I slather it on before I sleep and I wake up with the softest lips in the world. I would pay hundreds of dollars for this! 🙂
Catalina // heartenest
I got a sample of Air Repair Rescue Balm in one of my Birchboxes last winter, and I loved it so much that I got the full-size tube. It’s pretty thick but not too harsh or drying (I get pretty chapped lips in the winter, as well).
I make whipped shea butter that I use on my face, hands and lips during the winter. It has really worked well to combat dryness. I keep it in a cobalt glass jar, but it can be kept in just about any container. It’s easy to make and although I have to use my finger to apply it, I can rub any excess into my cuticles.
It is too heavy for my oily-ish skin in the summer, but I tend to dry out badly during the winter and this is the only thing that has kept that from happening without causing massive breakouts. Love, love, love this stuff. This is the recipe I use: http://www.hardlotion.com/blog/2011/5/4/whipped-shea-butter-recipe.html
I love love love my newest balm. I was wanting something that isn’t minty like so many of them are, and picked up a plain Nivea one. I don’t put it on too frequently from it wearing off, there’s no smell or taste, and it isn’t sticky!
Philosophy Kiss Me Tonight – it’s the best I’ve ever found. I have been using this for 3-4 years. A little pot for $20 lasts at least 6 months, using it nightly. I put it on before bed ( it only takes a very little bit) and it is still soothing my lips in the am. I order it online at Belk.com – they ship cosmetics for free!
I’ve tried many high-end balms, but about two years ago I discovered the Sally Hansen Overnight Lip Recovery. It’s slightly minty. I put it on before bed, and when I awake, while I can even still feel it on my lips, I can still feel and see a huge difference. My lips look like they were just plumped! While plumping was never the initial intention, I can say plumpers have never worked on me. I never even get the tingling sensation that people say is typically there. But this Overnight Lip Recovery moisturizers so deep, its visible from the inside out. I only have to use it 2-3 nights a week, and I live in the dry, cold NYC. It makes my lips super smooth and also creates a smooth base for lipstick wear (a daily necessity of mine). Try it out – it works wonders, and even just for a few dollars.
Love this post, I am a chapstick junky, for years I was hooked on orginal burts bees, but have found a new love, the body shops shea butter lip balm!!!
Based upon the many recommendations for Jack Black, I ordered a tube. It came yesterday and I gave it a try last night. I’m a convert. It’s very, very good. I ordered mine from Amazon. Mine came in a tube so I wonder if it’s a different product than the “lip balm” mentioned above. In any case, it is excellent, and I will keep the tube by my bedside.
Nivea milk and honey
I do consider all of the ideas you’ve presented on your post.
They are very convincing and will certainly work. Still, the posts
are too short for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from subsequent time?
Thanks for the post.

L A N S I N O H! Seriously – I am pretty sure I am the number one lip balm junkie – I have tried every single one listed in this blog in addition to every single one that people have talked about here. From the $75.00 Sisley Baume (Yes I actually spent $75.00 on lip balm) to the $55.00 La Mer Balm to a $2.00 tube of Vaseline – to making my own several times with top of the line organic ingredients – I have tried literally everything to no avail. Finally, my girlfriend who had recently had a baby said she was using Lansinoh – not only for it’s intended purpose, as a nipple moisturizer for breastfeeding moms – but on just about everything else that was dry on her body including her lips. I had used medical grade lanolin before in my own lip balm concoctions and hated the smell and taste so I was definitely skeptical but since I am totally addicted to finding the perfect product I marched to Target immediately and purchased two tubes – two large tubes for $8.00 each. I applied the Lansinoh as soon as I got back to my car and literally in 10 minutes my dry cracked lips felt like butta. I will never buy anything else 🙂
I used to use EOS until I developed severely dry lips after prolonged use. Now I use Burt’s Bees- haven’t had any problems with that so far.
