Battle of the Balms

Cleansing Dry Skin with POND’S

balms1

Winter is approaching and my lips are as dry as ever. The absolute final thing that I do before going to bed for the night is apply a generous amount of lip balm. My husband does the exact same thing, and his potion of choice is Carmex.

Sometimes when we travel I forget to grab my lip balm and have to use his Carmex and while, yes, it’s thick enough to pretty much remain in place throughout the entire night, I couldn’t help but feel like I had a heavy layer all over my lips. But I was finding my balms of choice weren’t really able to go the distance and leave me with really well hydrated lips in the morning.

Sure, I go to bed at 9:00p these days, but there has to be a lip balm that can last 10 hours, right?

I grabbed my dish full of lip balms and thought I’d go through the pros and cons of each one in case you, too, are on the hunt for a winning, hydrating balm!

I’ve heard great things about Nuxe Reve de Miel. I found it on Birchbox.com and used some points to get it pretty cheap!

balm1

I don’t love the orange flavor, but thats subjective to each persons preferences. Otherwise it’s extremely thick but it doesn’t feel like it really penetrates past the outer layer of my lips. So, I wouldn’t pick this as a favorite, but I can see why some love it. I don’t like the fact that I have to use my finger, and since it hasn’t turned out to be a good enough product to make it “worth” having to wash my finger off, I’m now looking for something that I can apply through a tube.

balm2

One of the balms I’ve been using most often is the eos Strawberry Sorbet Smooth Sphere Lip Balm. I really just bought it because the packaging looked cool. It’s hydrating, and smells heavenly, but it’s quite thick enough to last through the night.

balm4

I’ve been a Softlips fan since middle school, if I remember correctly. I saw their new cube lip balm at Target in “Fresh Mint” and was excited to try it out. It’s a bit waxier (as all softlips products tend to be) than I’d like it to be, but it will make your lips incredibly soft. I love the minty flavor too!

balm5

This Mint tin is an old product from Anthropologie. It’s really luxurious, but it presents the same issue as the Nuxe Reve de Miel in that I need to use my finger to apply it.

balm6

The classic softlips, in the skinny little container, has been my go-to lip balm for years and years. It isn’t as “healing” as I’d like to to be for really, really chapped lips, but it definitely makes them feel soft. I find that I need to apply a few layers to really saturate my lips at night, but I love using this in the daytime in case I’m going without lipstick or gloss.

balm7

This is probably my favorite type of packaging of the bunch because I can apply a certain amount without junking up my fingers. It’s heavy, and not sticky, and I love the mint flavor. I’d love to find something a little bit more luxurious than this, as I find it wears off rather quickly.

Am I being too picky about my lip balms? Perhaps. But I just know there has to be a really deeply hydrating product that I’ll wake up with thinking, “wow my lips still feel great”.

What are your favorites? I’d love to hear if you have an all-time favorite lip balm!

Ugh. I’m in the same boat. I just ordered a couple options to try and hope something will do the trick. Can’t wait to see what other suggestions are out there!

I used to use Carmex too, but only in the tube. I’m like you and hate having to use my finger to put stuff on. I can’t remember the name of what I’m using now, it has a bee as the push-up thing. It works ok, but I’m not thrilled with it. I would be interested in hearing what other people like!

Aquaphor- they make it in lip balm tubes now. Plus it’s cheap and a little goes a long way. Has a vasline kinda texture, but a bit thicker. Have yet to find anything better!

I like two lip balms that do a great job. First, Dermstore Lip Quench. It was $6 and you also got a second one free with free shipping. Comes in a small tube so you can apply directly from the tube to your lips. I use this during the day and it keeps my lips moist. At night I use Bite Agave Lip Mask. It also come in a small tube. This is more expensive so I use this at night and my lips do feel great the next morning. I bought this at Sephora and it was $26.

Reply
Katie says · 11.13.14

I use the Agave Lip Mask every night and I love it. I’m glad they changed the packaging from the metal tube to this plastic one. The metal tube cracks and product squishes out the sides, however with this new plastic-like tube is hard to squeeze the product out of. So I think they could rethink the packaging one more time! (But I agree about pots, who wants to gunk up their fingers and get germs inside the balm!)

Try MAC’s lip conditioner. It is reasonably priced, will last all year, you don’t have to use your fingers, and it just melts into your lips. I love it.

I am also really picky about lip balms 🙂 I really like Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning lip balm with kokum butter. It seems to hydrate well, non-sticky, but doesn’t last more than 4-5 hours during the day. I like how it feels going on, it doesn’t gunk up my finger, it doesn’t have any scents or flavors, AND it is mostly natural/non-toxic. Has anyone been able to find something similar but with lasting effects?

I have been using Burt’s Bees lip balm the last few weeks and LOVE IT! The tinted ones are especially great throughout the day to add some color while keeping my lips hydrated. I highly recommend it!

The other one I love is OraLabs Chap Ice Medicated Lip Balm. I got a tiny tube from my dentist and I use it almost every night. I wake up with my lips feeling soft and fresh. I wish I could find a larger tube somewhere because I’m almost out.

I also use Burt’s Bees tinted lip shimmer. I love the little bit of color and that it’s medicated/healing. Meaning it has that tingle that lets you know it’s doing something! My favorite shade is Watermelon.

Plain old Vaseline! It stays on all night and my lips have a light sheen to them in the morning and feel softer to the touch. You will have to put it on with your fingers, but I rub the excess off onto the back of my hands for extra hydration. It is a multi-functional product! Also can rub it around your eyes as an eye cream 🙂

Reply
Sarah says · 11.11.14

I agree!! I use Vaseline on my lips, face , and hands, especially my knuckles. I put it on my kids faces and lips too. I bought little containers to take it with me in my bag.

Reply
Violet says · 11.11.14

I use Vaseline, too – at night and throughout the day. I can’t stand anything waxy or heavy on my lips, and Vaseline is neither. I also rub the “residue” from my fingertip onto the back of my other hand or on a particularly dry spot elsewhere on my body.

One of my favorite tricks to re-hydrate my winter-battered cuticles is to rub Vaseline on each cuticle, then follow with a nice hand lotion. I usually use Curel on my hands, but when February and March roll around and the dryness is getting desperate, I use Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Care Cream. It’s amazing stuff – less than $4 for a twin pack of 4 oz. pots at the Walmart, smells a bit odd (not bad, just…odd), but it works miracles on dry, callused feet and hands.

Well, that went off on a small bunny trail. Bottom line: Vaseline is good stuff.

Reply
Anica says · 11.11.14

I am another Vaseline believer. I live in Alaska where during the winter if you don’t cover your entire body in lotion twice a day you become a scaly itchy mess. I use several different lip balms Eos and Softlips being two of my go tos but when winter comes I pull out the Vaseline. I have the little containers everywhere and a big one by my bed. I prefer the coco butter variety. When everything else fails, I can put the Vaseline on and have nice soft lips the next morning.
I am also a teacher and we give the kids Vaseline at school for cracked dry lips. It fixes even the worst cracked lips in no time.

One more for Vaseline. Honestly I can put this on top of chapped and bleeding lips in a crazy thick coat at night, breathe with my mouth open all night because I’m congested, and wake up with lips on their way to healing. I’ve never found anything else that works that well.

you know what my favorite is? Lanolin. Yep, THAT lanolin which you probably already have from David. I don’t even have kids and I use it. It makes my lips feel fabulous and I will never use anything else at night again!

Reply

I’m a lanolin lover too because I OBSESS about moisturizing my lips at night throughout the year (and I live in humid Houston)! One time I was on a business trip in Phoenix of all (dry) places and forgot my lip balm. Horrific trip! I recently fell in love with Dr. Lips from my monthly Birchbox subscription. When I priced the item to purchase and saw it was 100% lanolin it made me think, “isn’t Lansinoh 100% lanolin?” Yep! So I can buy a huge tube of Lansinoh for about a 1/4 of the price of one tube of Dr. Lips (sorry Dr. Lips)! My lips don’t feel waxy, they don’t peel after days of repeated use and I love that they are still moisturized when I wake up. I may look a bit hokey carrying around “nipple balm” since my son is 5, but I’m in happy lip heaven!

Reply
alexandra says · 11.11.14

My best friend JUST told me about this yesterday! My lips have been so chapped, I swear down to the nerves, lately. Gotta love pregnancy dry skin! I put the lanolin on three times and I was a new person! It lasts quite a long time too, though it does need to be put on with a finger. I have at least a dozen other balms and products for my lips and this is by FAR the BEST!

Reply
Priscilla says · 11.11.14

I loved lanolin, but the smell…
Nothing beats MAC clear lip glass for moisturizing- it gets rid of chapped lips ASAP, but it is SO sticky!!!! And I love the RoseBud Salve… but the pot seems to work better than the tube for some odd reason? My husband even asks for it when his lips are chapped. I just wipe the excess on my cuticles…

Reply
JNJxn says · 11.11.14

GREAT idea!!! I bet lanolin does work well! I have some leftover from a year ago that I’ll have to try. Thank you!

amy says · 11.11.14

I’m a huge fan of Ava Anderson lip balm (just the regular version, not a fan of the waxy feel of the SPF version). It really soaks in and drenches my lips overnight! Plus, it’s got enough sheen to give a faint gloss when I skip lipstick for the day. I’m sure you already do this, but when winter comes around I make lip scrubs a regular part of my beauty routine (Ava Anderson also has a great lip scrub, but I prefer plain ole coconut oil and sugar) Lip scrub + balm before bed = super soft and hydrated lips in the am!

Kate, have you heard of Labello? I’m not sure if this is sold anywhere in the US (I’ve never been able to find it) but it’s affiliated with the brand Nivea. I don’t know what it is but all of their products are perfect! They have a few varieties of tubed lip balm that are all great, but my personal favorite is a vanilla macadamia lip butter– you’re right, it does present that problem of needing to stick your finger in a tin but it is worth it and feels and smells heavenly. I live in the Middle East now for work, so with the desert climate my lips are always dry and luckily they have the Labello brand here too! Nothing has worked as well. I thought I was just goofy when it came to these products but wheno studied abroad in Italy, almost every girl bought tons of Labello products to take home in addition to their other souvenirs! Such a steal!

I am Dutch and Labello is our number one brand when it comes to lipcare. Winters can be cold here in The Netherlands 😉 and the plain version with a blue and white package is my favourite. You can buy it everywhere here, I think you should find it online in a European webshop, for sure!

I actually never post a comment on your blog, bit I am a big fan of your blog and You Tube channel! So, by posting this Labello post, I might as well tell you, you have fans all over the world! 🙂

Ellie B says · 11.11.14

I bought a tube of Labello on a trip 5 years ago and have been dreaming of it ever since! That stuff was the best. It is not available in the U.S. I contemplated ordering some online but the shipping was CRAZY for such an inexpensive product. Next time I’m in Europe I’m buying all the Labello. 🙂

Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatment is my current go to, pretty similar to Labello in texture. Very moisturizing, if I apply at night I can still feel it on my lips in the morning. Good stuff.

We can create our own buy-send-trade fanclub, I will buy all of the Labello our drugstore has in stock and sent it to the US. Then you buy the Naked Basics palette from Urban Decay and send it my way ;-D That product is a holy grail here, but it’s as hard to get in the Netherlands as Labello in the US 🙂

I have an exchange student from The Netherlands living with me. If you need something, perhaps he can bring it to you when he goes home in May to avoid shipping?

Hi, Labello is marketed as Nivea lip balm here in the UK. Perhaps it’s Nivea in the US also?

Reply
Gabbi says · 11.12.14

You know it is Niveain the US but they don’t have all of the same products! And I swear it’s not the same! It feels waxier? But maybe Labello just feels automatically more luxurious because it’s foreign, lol. I am all for a Labello/US takeover!

Last year I took Accutane for 6 months. Talk about some seriously dry, cracked lips!! I was in Sephora one day look for yet another lip balm and started chatting with a woman, she had taken Accutane as well. She recommend Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm. It was the only thing I could find to sooth my lips. I ordered directly from their website. I think it is reasonable priced, around $6.00 or $7.00 a tube. I only use now during the cold months.

Try out the Fresh brand Sugar lip balms. They smell awesome and aren’t very thick, but they heal my lips in about two days. I love to wear the tinted ones during the day (awesome colors to choose from!) and then use the clear one at night. They are $22.50, but they really work and the tube lasts a long time. I haven’t worn anything else since I discovered them 3 years ago.

The advanced lip therapy treatment in the white tube is THE BEST thing ever!! The only thing that keeps my lips soft and no cracking or peeling in the hot desert summers or in the cold northeast winters! I put it on before bed and also in the morning when I’m getting ready. It’s pricey but REALLY works. And when you think it’s empty…there’s a lot more product inside the tube below the bottom plastic edge… I use a lip brush to get it out once it’s down to the edge, and there’s almost another half tube down there that you can’t waste!!

For over a year now I have used Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant, Unscented formula. I initially bought it to use on my eyelids when I was experiencing an allergic reaction to some eye makeup, and my lids were crepe-y and itchy. This was recommended for my eyes and worked wonders, and I still use it every night on my lids to keep them dewy and soft. I started using it on my lips at night at the same time, and have found that my lips still feel hydrated when I wake up. It’s $21 for a tube and mine still hasn’t run out; I purchased it in August 2013 and have used it every single night since. Best 21 bucks I ever spent! 🙂

Jack Black lip balm! My lips get really dry, especially this time of year, and this stuff lasts all night long. I can still feel it on my lips when I wake up in the morning. The mint flavor is best!

My absolute favorite is from CO Bigelow- http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10951198&kwCatId=&cm_vc=200

Smells great, less than $10, and is so luxurious!

Completely agree – the Bigelow line at Bath and Body Works is AMAZING! The night one works well, but I usually turn to the mint one or the sugar rub, depending on if my lips are dry or just chapped and have some dead skin. They both keep my breath fresh and work like a charm!

Oh, and the regular original Bigelow mint in the green tube was an Oprah’s favourite thing, so obviously its stellar 😛

Aquaphor all the way. Put a thin layer on, rub in well, then a thick one. It lasts all night long. In 3 nights, guaranteed soft lips.

I’m in the same boat with you about lip balm. It can’t be too waxy or it feels weird, too creamy & it doesn’t stay on. I also have to be careful about ingredients because if I use anything like Vaseline (which doesn’t actually absorb into your skin, look it up! Just sits on top, gross!) or lanolin, it makes me break out around my lips. Plus when you hear that whole “women eat 5 pounds of lipstick each year”, it really made me think about what I was putting on my lips. I have tried a ton of natural lip balms & keep coming back to Badger Balms Lavender & Orange lip balm. It’s the perfect blend of waxy & creamy so you don’t get a weird feeling on your lips, dog hair doesn’t stick to it(important when you have two shedding dogs), stays on all night & I love the flavor. It’s not very orangey, more herbal/floral with the lavender, but since I have trouble sleeping I figure any extra lavender help I can get, I’ll take. It does come in other flavor, but I’ve only tried that one. I buy it at whole foods, but I’m sure you can order it online too.. Hope you find something to fulfill your needs!

My pick isn’t fancy, but it is rich, thick, and really cures dry lips….and you probably have some already (or will very soon). Lanolin! I snagged all the sample tubes at the hospital when I had my daughter just to have little purse size tubes! Not just for cracked nipples! 🙂

I am a diehard Kiehl’s lipbalm girl. I am not good about moisturizing my lips regularly, so when my lips get chapped and dry, I swipe this stuff on and bye bye dry lips! It’s so hydrating. It’s thick but really penetrates quickly so you don’t have that heavy product feeling left on your lips. And it’s fairly cheap and one tube lasts forever.

My current favorite (for at least two years now) is Nivea A Kiss of Olive Oil & Lemon. I know that combo seems strange but it really has very little taste and the scent is very light and reminds me of fragrant green tea. I also love that the tubes twist up similar to a lipstick tube and the balm retracts completely so that you never scrape off product putting the cap back on! It’s very moisturizing but not at all heavy. I use it every night and almost never have chapped lips.

But if I do get chapped, Aquaphor is my go-to like many have mentioned. That stuff is simply magical. When my daughter’s lips are really chapped, we use the Chapstick Overnight Lip Treatment. It works great for her but I haven’t tried it myself.

I can’t sleep without the Rosebud Perfume Co’s Strawberry lip balm. It comes in a tin so you have to use your finger, but it is thick and stays put all night. I like it better than the rosebud salve and the minted rose from the same line. It’s about $6 at Sephora.

When I was pregnant last winter it seemed my lips were so super dry and chapped all the time. My savior was Neosporin Lip Health, Overnight Renewal Therapy. Even though the packaging isn’t very hip and its not a very trendy brand, the product is absolutely fabulous. I wouldn’t put it in the same class as the “cosmetic” types you mention in the post, but I wouldn’t say it was like Carmex (which I hate) either. It’s really soft when applied, and stays put overnight. I didn’t find it gunky, and while the packaging says “healthier lips in 3 days” I would see significant improvement overnight. You do have to apply it with your finger, but I don’t think its gunky enough that you have to wash off any excess. (I used to rub any excess into the knuckles of my pinky fingers, which also got unreasonably dry while I was pregnant) Also, it’s not very attractive, as it goes on white, but I was willing to overlook that since it worked miracles. While I don’t use it as often as I did when I was pregnant, I keep a pot of it in my night stand drawer, and still hit it up anytime my lips feel parched. The next morning I wake up, and all is right in the world.

I also use the Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Lip Therapy and it’s hands down the best! I know you would have to put your finger in it, but it’s not greasy/waxy where you would need to wash it off! Seriously, my husband and I cannot go to bed without it. I have to buy it on Amazon because my Target quit carrying it. It’s so good.

I’ve been using Udderly Smooth udder cream for years! I get it at Walmart in the pharmacy department. It’s a lotion, not greasy. It doesn’t have a strong scent. I use it several times a day on my hands.

The biggest thing when it comes to lip balms is ingredients. Any balm (or lotion for that matter) that contains petroleum by-products is not nourishing or healing in any way. Petroleum (grease) will sit on top of skin & not pentetrate. It well also not allow skin to breathe which is a part of the bodies natural healing process. Shea butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil are just a few natural ingredients that are actually nourishing & will absorb into skin. If you’re having to reapply lip balm every hour, most likely the ingredients are not quality ingredients. P.S. not all companies willingly provide a list of ingredients. Go to bath & body works website & try to find ingredients for ANY product. What are they hiding?

1. Good ol’ fashioned Vaseline
2. Honest Healing Balm
3. Josie Maran Argan Lip treatment (this is probably my favorite, it’s light but still moisturizes)
4. Body Shop Moroccan lip treatment

At night I use one that I got from birchbox: Dr Lipp, which is really good. You apply with your finger from a tube but it doesn’t bother me, I clean the excess on the back of my hands. I also got in one of my boxes a sample for Yu.Be which I take on trips and it is really good, really thick!

I have the same exact issue during colder months! Every night I GENEROUSLY apply a lip balm and hand lotion, plus I drink about 8oz of water. Drinking more water has definitely helped my dry lips and skin, however, I still need to apply products. I’ve tried many, but keep coming back to burst bees basic peppermint lip balm (I apply many layers) and gold bond extra moisturizing hand lotion…I think I get the kind for exzema because I really want a deep moisturizer. Recently, I found a mini tub of Vaseline lip therapy that I forgot I had and that has been my lip treatment if choice when in sleeping. Yes you have to apply it with your finger, but it stays all night and my lips are crazy smooth! I barely have to apply Chapstick throughout the day. Any residue I have left on my finger, I just rub into the back of my hand, since it’s really just Vaseline. Good luck! <3 Jessica

I use the Rosebud (Smith’s) Strawberry lip balm every night and I can still fee a light layer in the morning. It’s also magic for chapped lips and a raw nose. I love this post! I’m always on the lookout for a good lip balm. Before bed, I use Aquaphor Lip Repair or Mary Kay Satin Lips. Sometimes I do a layer of Satin Lips then top it with Aquaphor. My dermatologist recommended Aquaphor when my lips were EXTREMELY dry from Accutane. It’s now my go to when I really need to moisturize my lips.

During the day, I’m currently using the same EOS lip balm you’ve mentioned in the post. Though I’m nearing the end of the ball and it’s annoying how difficult it is to apply at that point.

I’m surprised only a few have recommended my favorite… Jack Black. It was recommended to me by a female dentist, and i haven’t gone back. No joke: I place on my lips each night, and it’s still there in the morning. (And I’m a mouth breather at night due to allergies). This stuff is amazing! It’s made for men, but the flavors are gender neutral. I’ve gotten all my friends converted! And they go crazy if they lose it! 😉 You can find it at Sephora & Ulta, both carry it in the men’s section- just look for the cobalt blue Jack Black items. They cost roughly $7, but last quite awhile. My favorite flavor is the plain Shea Butter one, but i don’t mind the other flavors at all. DEFINITELY give this one a shot! And why not get one for your husband to try too!?! I guarantee you’ll love it! 🙂

My husband and I do the same thing! His choice is Blistex medicated mint (he’s been a fan since he was in college taking accutane, which basically strips all moisture from your body); mine has been Smith’s Rose Balm. I know it doesn’t fit your bill, because it has to be applied with fingers, but I use it as a double-duty lip balm and cuticle/hand cream since it’s so moisturizing 🙂 It doesn’t bother me to rub it into my perpetually dry knuckles and nail beds after putting it on my lips, and I love the light scent and luxurious feel.

It also doesn’t have “the addiction factor” that I swear companies use to make your lips even drier so that you have to keep using their product! I know you’ve used other Arbonne products, have you ever tried their lip balm? I think it’s the best!

I am a lip balm snob/addict! Its what I wear every day of my life. Boring? I know… But i have been branching out to lipsticks in the last few months… But, I have been using the same one for probably 5 years, tried others and always went back to Blistex – Silk n Shine (still LOVE this), but I was in CVS the other day and they didnt have my Blistex one and I knew I was getting low, and I litterally cannot go a day without my balm. I came across the Nivea -A Kiss of Milk and Honey lip balm, and I have to say it has replaced my Blistex!! I wear it during the day and put it on before bed and I wake up with still moisturized lips. It’s definitely worth a shot!

Oh my gosh, this post was made for me! I wake up every morning with cracked and bleeding lips (mouth breather here). There are several options to get through the day with a few applications, but I haven’t found anything to last all night without feeling that “layer of junk”. Even the classics (Burts Bees, Blistex, etc.) aren’t good for me. I will definitely be trying all these out!

Most balms don’t stay on me for more than 30 minutes (I’m looking at YOU ChapStick, Burt’s Bees, SoftLips, Smith’s Rosebud, coconut oil, etc!) so I’m constantly on a quest for something that lasts a long time but doesn’t feel sticky. Originally, I didn’t like Fresh but after 2 weeks of using it, my lips adapted to it and now I LOVE IT! I use either the brown or white tube at night if my lips are not chapped and the Rose color during the day. (Note: the Sephora holiday value sets are great if you want to try this brand!) If my lips ARE chapped then nothing beats Bite Agave mask… it.is.awesome. A little goes a long way and I’ve had my tube for several months and I’ve barely made a dent in it.

All of those are a bit splurgy, so my fav cheapo options are Aquaphor at night or Rose Vaseline during the day (has a faint pink tint). I can’t wait to try the user suggestion of using lanolin because I just had a baby less than 2 weeks ago so I already have stashes of that around my house, yay! 😀

I don’t think there can be such a thing as too picky about lip balms! I am always on the hunt for one that can keep my lips hydrated in the winter. Right now, I use vaseline (although you do have to apply it with a finger which I loathe) or the Fresh treatment from Sephora.

Paula’s Choice Lip & Body Treatment Balm. Hands down my favorite and the last step in my nightly routine. My hands are always clean when I apply it so no fear of contaminating the jar. I do what another commenter said – just rub the little bit leftover on my knuckles or another rough spot (like my elbows). I’ve been using this for several years and have never been unhappy or searched for anything to replace it. It’s awesome! There’s also no flavor or irritating ingredients (like menthol). Paula’s Choice products are excellent — she cuts through the beauty industry fluff and gives you great products! I never pay full price for any item. I wait for my favorite products to go on sale and combine them with free shipping. It has no fragrance or harsh ingredients. We spend a lot of time up in the NC mountains where it is extremely dry in the winter, and I can’t be without this balm! I also use it sometimes on my elbows or cuticles if I have a bit left on my fingers.

I have loved Dr. Dans chap stick! I used it when I was on heavy duty acne medication that dried out my skin, especially my lips. It was the only stuff that was able to help! It has sort of a weird flavor (like beeswax) and the “taste” isn’t great, but you get used to it. The benefits FAR out weigh the negatives!

I love Juice Beauty Organic Lip Moisturizer, also Dermalogica Lip Treatment. My dermatologist recommended to always put something on your lips BEFORE and after brushing your teeth. Toothpaste is very harsh, with whiteners etc. She said to try to avoid letting toothpaste sit on your bare lips. Carmex and other petroleum based lip products create a barrier against moisture on your lips, but they do not soften or moisturize. She said that’s why people often get “addicted” to the feel of those products. Their lips are fragile without that coating.

I do have to apply it with my finger, but I do it right after washing my face at night, so my hands are clean and I can wipe my finger off on my washcloth. WHOA! It just took me half a day to scroll through all the comments! Yowza, loads of feedback on this one!

So if you’re still reading these comments waaaaay down here at the bottom, my practical lip balm choice is Aquaphor. I know it’s heavy as hell but nothing, absolutely nothing, repairs skin like this stuff.

I don’t like eos because it wears off quickly and really doesn’t do anything at all to hydrate my lips. I think the smell, flavor and packaging are just brilliant marketing, nothing more.

My everyday lip balm is the pomegranate Burt’s Bees. Awesome stuff. Not too heavy for daytime, smells great and actually works.

I’ve been using a combo of Smith’s Rosebud Salve at night and an eos sphere during the day. My favorites are honeysuckle-honeydew and the new coconut milk. The rosebud salve is perfect for healing up nearly all but the driest of dry patches that show up now and then. I double it as cuticle cream, so I’ll typically put some on my lips and move on to my cuticles. If I’m being lazy, I’ll just use the residual on one particularly dry spot.

Have you tried Dr. Lipp Nipple Balm for Lips? Weird, weird, and slightly uncomfortable name, but it is amazing! I got a small tube in my Birchbox last month and ended up buying a full tube because it works so great. It’s a little on the thick side, but has a silky texture. Also a little goes a long way, which is good because it’s on the pricier side. My lips feel so hydrated in the morning and feel great throughout the day. I learned that this lip balm is made of 100% pharmeceutical grade lanolin and it repares and moisturizes better than most lip balms because lanolin is the closest thing to our natural body oils. Might want to check it out. My only complaint is that it is odorless and I love fruity lip balms, but I can overlook that because it has been my saving grace. Ha!

Cult Australian balm PawPaw is really good as is Lanolips lip balm in a tube.
I am currently trying Elizabeth Arden’s 8 hour cream/balm which I also learned can be used as a gentle lip exfoliant by putting the product on your lips and then gently but firmly rolling a cotton bud (Qtip) back and forth over your lips… And it works! It gently removes any rough, dry or loose bits of skin without destroying your lips.

I’ve heard the Creme de la Mer balm is excellent but it is very expensive.

Far and away, Smith’s Rosebud Salve is my forever favorite. I’ve even turned my husband and six-year-old daughter into addicts right along with me. It comes in a tin, but also in a tube for no-gunky-fingers application. I was super excited when they came out with the tube, as it also won’t melt in the summer and potentially get all over my car like the tin used to. I find that it definitely lasts all night, and the rose scent is nice, but not too strong…

I feel like I’ve tried them all, too! I’m very particular about texture…even with lip glosses. But as for balms, it’s Burt’s Bees all the way for me! I was addicted to their honey lip balm for the longest time (honey lotion, too). But I got a little tired of the scent…it was a little overpowering for me (I’m very sensitive to fragrance). So now I’m all about their coconut balm. I’m a huge coconut lover anyway, but it’s very subtle. The texture is just right: not at all sticky, not too thick/not too thin, wears off gradually but without leaving a residue.

The best lip balm/chap stick I’ve found that actually works (instead of just feeling good for an hour or so) is from the “Made On” brand. It is very simple but it stays all night! It doesn’t seem sticky or gunky to me, but maybe the texture just doesn’t bother me. The only ingredients are coconut oil, shea butter, and and beeswax (then whatever essential oil you want for flavor). You should give it a try! http://store.hardlotion.com/Lip_Balms_s/1827.htm

Love this post. Where is the cute glass box from?! I love that you can close the lid to keep dust at bay! :))

Love your blog and this post. Dry weather is a killer for my lips. Try Laura Mercier Flawless Skin Lip Silk. It’s in a tube, the consistency is a little different, but it is amazing. I use it every night, keeps my lips protected and moisturized

I’m a big fan of shea butter when I want something thicker and coconut oil for a sheer gloss.

I’m a lip balm aholic. Somehow my favorites for night time always end up being the ones you have to apply with your fingers.

philosophy lip balm is wonderful

Last year I discovered Nivea and now that’s my go-to night balm. It’s in a tin and they have it beside the lotion (so stinkin random) at Target. It’s not with the lip balms – well, their twisty-uppy one is but not the tin.

I use just regular coconut oil for everything before bed. It helps heal my lips, and it last until the morning. I also use it if my face is really dry, as well as for my hands and feet. You can get it in a fairly large container and it lasts forever! I separated mine into a few different containers, a smaller one for my lips at night, a medium sized one for my face, and left the remained in the original packaging for my feet, elbows, and hands. It is a miracle worker!!! It may not be a name brand product, but it works!!!

BurtsBees also has some wonderful medicated chapsticks, but I do not use them for overnight.

I recently had a bought of EXTREMELY dry lips. Dry to the point of pain and all chap stick burned! I tried the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm from Sephora! Heaven! It didn’t burn and it really helped the dryness. It comes in a few different flavors but my favorite is the Grapefruit and Ginger! It is seriously a lifesaver and it lasts all night and for an added bonus it has SPF 25!!!

I use Aquaphor at night! I also need something in a tube. I love that it really moisturizes my lips, but I’ll also dab some on my face (like if I’m having to blow my nose a lot and my nose gets super dry). During the day, I love softlips and Coola Liplux (I got it from Birchbox).

Aquaphor lip repair is my end all lip balm/hydrating lip product. All the other stuff I tried made my lips feel waxy or actually made them feel even more dried out if I didn’t constantly re-apply every few hours. I use Aquaphor before going to bed at night and once in the morning with a couple swipes of eos throughout the day. Something about eos that I just realized today – the white swirled eggs with the coconut milk seem way waxier and less moisturizing than the regular kind. I just bought the vanilla mint egg and my lips are feeling waxy and dry 🙁

I am a burts bees girl to the end. The original, I don’t think the others work as well, they smell good but seem thinner to me. I also got Dr. Lipp Nipple balm in my Burch box last month and have really liked that. As well as the hand cream that was in there, Camille Beckman Tuscan Honey. I live in Colorado, and my hands get so dry they start to crack!!! But, I always have aquaphor with me too. It last a long time, and I can use it on my hands, and lips. I had to use this on my face in high school during swim team.

Just some other things I notice that help- this is probably common sense but increasing your water intake does wonders for chapped lips. Especially if I drink a glass right before bed (or maybe half so you don’t have to get up to use the bathroom!) I find that my lips aren’t nearly as dry. Also when I use my Clarisonic I use it on my lips too to get rid of the dry skin, which helps the Aquaphor absorb.

I can’t believe you don’t like the Nuxe! That is my holy grail lip balm! I don’t know what I did before I found it. My lips always get really bad in the winter and this is the only thing that keeps them from cracking and peeling. Love. It.

The EOS Cool Mint is a much longer lasting product than the Strawberry Sorbet! I can sleep for up to 12 hours and still wake up with moisturized and soft lips! 🙂

I really suggest using Nipple Butter at night…or even during the day! I use Medela’s nipple cream. Why not, right? It is for “dry, cracked nipples” why wouldn’t it work on “dry, cracked lips.” AND IT DOES! My lips are very very dry, like bleeding in the night dry. At night, I use Olive Oil and sugar to scrub off the excess dead skin then apply a generous amount of nipple butter. Within an hour of my first-ever use, my lips were like butter themselves! Totally weird, but totally amazing!!

You should try Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream. You’ll be amazed at using it as a lip balm overnight.

My absolute favorite lip balm is this one. I have never, ever used a balm like it. I slather it on before I sleep and I wake up with the softest lips in the world. I would pay hundreds of dollars for this! 🙂

I got a sample of Air Repair Rescue Balm in one of my Birchboxes last winter, and I loved it so much that I got the full-size tube. It’s pretty thick but not too harsh or drying (I get pretty chapped lips in the winter, as well).

I make whipped shea butter that I use on my face, hands and lips during the winter. It has really worked well to combat dryness. I keep it in a cobalt glass jar, but it can be kept in just about any container. It’s easy to make and although I have to use my finger to apply it, I can rub any excess into my cuticles.
It is too heavy for my oily-ish skin in the summer, but I tend to dry out badly during the winter and this is the only thing that has kept that from happening without causing massive breakouts. Love, love, love this stuff. This is the recipe I use: http://www.hardlotion.com/blog/2011/5/4/whipped-shea-butter-recipe.html

I love love love my newest balm. I was wanting something that isn’t minty like so many of them are, and picked up a plain Nivea one. I don’t put it on too frequently from it wearing off, there’s no smell or taste, and it isn’t sticky!

Philosophy Kiss Me Tonight – it’s the best I’ve ever found. I have been using this for 3-4 years. A little pot for $20 lasts at least 6 months, using it nightly. I put it on before bed ( it only takes a very little bit) and it is still soothing my lips in the am. I order it online at Belk.com – they ship cosmetics for free!

I’ve tried many high-end balms, but about two years ago I discovered the Sally Hansen Overnight Lip Recovery. It’s slightly minty. I put it on before bed, and when I awake, while I can even still feel it on my lips, I can still feel and see a huge difference. My lips look like they were just plumped! While plumping was never the initial intention, I can say plumpers have never worked on me. I never even get the tingling sensation that people say is typically there. But this Overnight Lip Recovery moisturizers so deep, its visible from the inside out. I only have to use it 2-3 nights a week, and I live in the dry, cold NYC. It makes my lips super smooth and also creates a smooth base for lipstick wear (a daily necessity of mine). Try it out – it works wonders, and even just for a few dollars.

Based upon the many recommendations for Jack Black, I ordered a tube. It came yesterday and I gave it a try last night. I’m a convert. It’s very, very good. I ordered mine from Amazon. Mine came in a tube so I wonder if it’s a different product than the “lip balm” mentioned above. In any case, it is excellent, and I will keep the tube by my bedside.

I do consider all of the ideas you’ve presented on your post.

They are very convincing and will certainly work. Still, the posts
are too short for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from subsequent time?
Thanks for the post.

L A N S I N O H! Seriously – I am pretty sure I am the number one lip balm junkie – I have tried every single one listed in this blog in addition to every single one that people have talked about here. From the $75.00 Sisley Baume (Yes I actually spent $75.00 on lip balm) to the $55.00 La Mer Balm to a $2.00 tube of Vaseline – to making my own several times with top of the line organic ingredients – I have tried literally everything to no avail. Finally, my girlfriend who had recently had a baby said she was using Lansinoh – not only for it’s intended purpose, as a nipple moisturizer for breastfeeding moms – but on just about everything else that was dry on her body including her lips. I had used medical grade lanolin before in my own lip balm concoctions and hated the smell and taste so I was definitely skeptical but since I am totally addicted to finding the perfect product I marched to Target immediately and purchased two tubes – two large tubes for $8.00 each. I applied the Lansinoh as soon as I got back to my car and literally in 10 minutes my dry cracked lips felt like butta. I will never buy anything else 🙂

I used to use EOS until I developed severely dry lips after prolonged use. Now I use Burt’s Bees- haven’t had any problems with that so far.
