How to Tease Hair
High Five for Friday
I’m sure if I tried to count the number of times I used words like “volume” or “lift” or “height” in reference to hairstyling on this blog, it would be a very, very high number.
I like a little lift at the roots, what can I say?
The most important ingredient is my favorite root lifter of all time, Aquage Uplifting Foam. Believe me–I’ve tried a lot of root lifters. None compare to Uplifting Foam. It’s sprayed directly onto your roots, making it super effective. If you are interested in purchasing this product, click here to search for salons in your area.
The second best tool for volume? Teasing your hair. Teasing, backcombing, and rat-ing (although I hate that word) are all the same thing. It’s a way to build a foundation for your hairstyle by creating bulk/fluff at the roots. It will help styles last, and also create wonderful texture for a half up or full updo style.
Here is how to do it!

great tutorial!! love your hair! 🙂
Hey! Can I just say that although you feel you don’t have a lot of photography experience, you prove that knowledge of good light makes a huge difference! You’re always careful to make sure you’re in an evenly-lit spot, and you look amazing! It’s silly, but I’m always thinking this (I’m a photography teacher) and this morning I thought, I need to tell her! 🙂
Lovely blog and so helpful! 🙂
MK
Thank you! I really appreciate that–I try to find good lighting. I’m learning as I go!
I was wondering what the best method for removing all the junk and teasing ratty mess afterwards would be….I always have such a hard time combing through to get everything out the next day. Thanks!
Ok I’m not an expert but try brushing ur hair alittle not that it hurts, take a shower to wash out the hair spray or root lifter. Use a shampoo an condtioner that make ur hair smooth an silky then try brushing it out after ur shower. Ps. If this doesn’t work then look up other ways on google or when u go to the hair dressers ask the they are the experts 🙂
Greatest.Hair.Ever!
Thanks for the tips!
Can you suggest a “serious” hold hairspray for those of us with fine hair? My hair falls out of styles a lot, as it is very fine, but I also have a lot of hair, so it is heavy.
Thank you!
Kenra Volume 25!
Thank you!!!
Kate, Enjoyed today’s video! Have you tried or do you have an option on the Wen hair cleansing conditioner? Didn’t know if you had ever heard of it or tried it. Thanks
Heard of it, haven’t tried it on myself, but have a few clients who swear by it. I think it depends on your hair needs as to whether or not it will work for you. I think the idea of it is good, but I’m not sure it’s practical for everyone. But, again, I haven’t used it myself.
I have super thick hair and tried Wen. At first, really liked it, but after using it for a few days it REALLY weighed down my hair and just made it droopy from the buildup. I’ll use it ever now and then and to give my hair a “break” from shampoo, but that’s pretty much it. IF you want to try it, I suggest getting a bottle off of ebay or amazon. If you go through the Wen site itself, its expensive and you are signed up for reacurring automatic payments and shipments then you have to make sure to cancel, which for me, was a hassle. Hope this helps.
Hi, I have been using Wen for a year. I have fine hair and a lot of it. It does take some patience and learning to get the full benefit. If you order On QVC, you will get a DVD teaching how to use his products. I had to try different ones to find out what worked for me. I use sixthirteen and Pomegranate. Sometimes I mix them together or use them individually. I’m a natural redhead, but as I have aged my color has become dull. So I have some color added. Using Wen keeps my color working for me longer. The most important key about Wen is using enough to really clean you hair and rinse, rinse, rinse. Hope this have been of help. Blessing to all, Irene
Thank you for this tutorial! I always try teasing my hair but I can always see the tease (I have thin, soft, darker blonde hair)… I did buy Aquage though, and do agree that it’s the best I’ve used (and I’ve tried many, too!).
I love all your tutorials, I never thought I would watch a hair tutorial longer than 3 minutes, but yours go by so fast 🙂 I wish you were my hair stylist 🙂
Do you have to blow dry your hair when using aquage? I have extremely curly hair and cant blow dry it. but i like teasing and volume 🙂
I have wavy/curly hair that I sometimes straighten out and sometimes let air dry and use my natural texture. I’ve found that Aquage does work best when I blow dry my hair. However, when I let my hair dry, I do think Aquage helps add more texture/hold for more effective teasing.
Hey Kate! Thanks for another awesome tutorial. Did you hairpray your hair after you curled but before you teased? I’m just wondering because when I try to tease, I end up losing the curls, but if I spray my hair before I tease, it becomes one hot mess.
I know this tutorial was all about hair, but just had to say I really love your lighter/softer eye makeup here.
Thank you! 🙂
yes agreed! Natural beauty in this tutorial and I love it.
You do such a great job on your video tutorials. You may everything look so easy! I was wondering if you have suggestions for those who don’t color their hair and have a difficult time with hair holding tease, curl, and any style other than straight! I’ve tried the root lifter products but when I tease, my hair does nothing as voluptuous as yours! Any product suggestions?
ditto- worse yet, my hair is so frizzy!! I can’t seem to get any product to work-and with Florida humidity against me. bah
Hi Kate! Love your blog! I tell all my clients and friends about it, especially the hair tutorials! Do you have any tricks or advice for styling naturally curly hair? Or any products you recommend?
Great video! I’ve never teased my hair before and wondered if it made your hair break easier? My hair is prone to split ends and I worry that this would make that worse.
You hair always looks so great! Makes me jealous. Thanks for the tutorial!

Thanks so much for this video! Silly question, but do some hair types not tease well? I’ve tried several different combs and brushes and my hair just won’t tease (at least not anything like it does in your videos).
Thanks so much for this video! Silly question, but do some hair types not tease well? I’ve tried several different combs and brushes and my hair just won’t tease (at least not anything like it does in your videos).
love this video! You have great hair, and I must say amazing skin as well! keep up the good work! =)
Adorable. I think that the reason my hair hasn’t teased at ALL is, one, my hair doesn’t tangle at all really, and two, I’ve never gone so far as to achieve a lions mane previous to softening… trying this tonight.
I love your make-up in this video!! So soft and pretty. Will you do a video on this?!
I will!
With all of the heat styling, teasing, etc., you’re pretty hard on your hair? What do you do/use to keep it in such great shape?
I must say you have the most perfect hair! I feel like I can tease all day and it is still flat. Ugh!
I just wanted to say since finding your blog I have had so many good hair days!! I have thick hair and I’m growing it out so it ends up in pony tails most days, but thanks to your videos my pony tails are super cute now!! I get so many comments and it’s all thanks to you!! I do have a question though, my stylist bought the aquage for me but it’s not a spray, it’s in a pump type bottle, do you know if this is as good? thank you!!! – Kerry
Uplifting Foam is what it is called. I’m not sure what she bought you!
Kate! I LOVE your hair with your bangs grown out! Very cute! Thanks for the great post! Also, I’m trying to find a place to buy your Aquage root lifter. Where could I find some? My stylist said her beauty supplier does not sell it. I’m using Big Sexy Hair Root Lift Foam and it is working okay.
Click the link mentioned in the post!
Hi Kate!, I starting using the uplifting foam in thanks to your blog. i could totally use it everyday, I just don’t because i don’t want people to think I have the absolute best hair ever 😉 but since you were talking about teasing hair, I wanted to share something with you. I recently discovered Big Sexy’s What a Tease. I have been following your blog for a couple of months, so I’m not sure if you have shared this product yet, but I really like it. The directions say to lift up hair, spray the tease, and then comb it back down. What I do is tease my hair like I normally do and spray this “tease in a bottle” in between the sections. I think this product makes my tease hold better. I like the feel of it (kind of like putting baby powder in it) and it makes my hair feel like second day hair, and I can even go an extra day without washing. If you haven’t tried it, check it out. & keep up the good work. <3 your blogging 🙂
Do you put the root lift foam on wet or dry hair? Great tutorial! Love your videos! Stacie xo
Hi there! Just found your blog while on pinterest…and I’ve been looking at it for hours…i will admit…lol…I would LOVE to try the aquage uplifting foam but I live in Canada and it doesn’t look like it is sold here…I’m hoping I could buy it online but I don’t think so…do you have any insight on how I might be able to get it?
Also…with all of the products and teasing…how do you keep your hair looking so beautiful…I’m a little concerned about breakage and such. I’d love to hear how you care for your hair.
by the way…you are beautiful and have great style. You have a loyal new follower! Take care and thanks!
Chrissy
Amazon is where I bought mine.
I want to see you do the pinch and spray on straight hair. It always looks funny after I remove my fingers.
Hey Kate! I just bought some of the uplifting foam, how long does your bottle usually last you? Thanks!
This is a fantastic tutorial, my favorite so far. I have never been able to tease my hair and it turns out it’s because I was too afraid to over-tease. Great info, thank you!
Could you do some videos on models with different hairstyles–like short bob with longer sides in front and shorter length in back? Thanks for great videos.
Since this makes the curls very loose, if you wanted much curlier hair with the teased style, could you go back in and make more defined curls after you did the teasing?
Love it! Thanks!
Have to say though, I had a moment when your hair was all teased out and totally crazy that I fully expected you to turn around and say, “Haha! April Fools!! There’s no way THIS is ever going to lay down nicely!” lol! I can’t believe that turned into your finished product. Can’t wait to try it!
I never teased my hair until I “met” you. It makes the biggest difference, but I still tend to accidently comb most of it out while trying to smooth it. I really appreciate this post and the slow motion tease, becasue I thought I was doing it all wrong. I still need a lot more practice..thanks for your knowledge and encouragement.
I SO needed this tutorial! Thanks Kate! You have such a pretty profile. Loved today’s make-up. I second the mention of doing a tutorial on it.

I am loving this tutorial and your hair! So cute! I do need to say that I’ve been following your blog for a few months now and I’m liking your bangs being grown out! It’s very pretty!
Awesome! Love your tips.
Can you do a post about your cut? I’m sure you don’t want mini-me’s but I keep thinking my cut is the same as yours but I’m not getting the same results.
Kate – You are the cutest thing! I just love checking your blog for stylish hair ideas and watching your videos. I have tried several of your updo’s and have gotten such great compliments on my hair. Thanks for creating your blog, keep it up!!!
Thank you for the link. My stylist has looked for aquage for me and our professional beauty supply stores do not carry it but with the link I was able to find a salon only a couple hours away that does. I plan in stopping in when I go through that area next week.
I actually ordered some Aquage last night. After all your raving about it, I decided it must be good 🙂 Can’t wait to see if it can give this flat, limp hair some umph!
We are supposed to be getting an H&M soon. I can’t wait!!
You are just the cutest gal! I am soon to be 55 and I read your blog every day:) You cross the age barriers for those of us kicking and screaming into “old” age. Thank you for your tutorials:)
Can’t thank you enough for your blog. I found it on Pinterest a few months ago and have been hooked ever since. Your videos are soooo helpful. Thank you for all the work you put in to them!
Great blog. Couple of hair questions…do you ever do your hair straight down (not flipped out or under) but like a straight line across the bottom? Do you ever use the new curling irons with no clip to make tighter spiral curls? I was just wondering!
Perfect tutorial! And I love your makeup here, so pretty for the season! Just wondering, my hair is somewhat difficult to tease so does teasing powder do anything fantastic to your hair? A friend of mine got it in her birchbox last month and swears by it, but I’m not convinced, I’d love to hear what you think!
Thank you for this tutorial. Many mornings I have your videos pulled up as I style my hair…and the teasing I feel is something that I am just not that good at…so thank you!!! And I love that Three Bird Nest is one of your sponsors…love Alicia’s products…I just can’t get enough!
I just love your tutorials! My hair is so flat, I feel like there is just no hope for it. But one day, I’m going to try this and see if I can make it work. I actually have a teasing brush. SO I’m excited to try it!
Great tutorial. You do a great job with these! You’re hair is so beautiful. PS…love your shirt;)
Just recently purchased the Aquage and the Kenra hairspray, after seeing it listed on your blog! I must say that it was a great buy! I am very happy with both products. I have natural curly hair,or should I say use to have. I don’t know if this makes sense, but ever since I got pregnant with my son which was 2 yrs. ago I have noticed that I lost most of the curl in my hair. I loved my curls and always got compliments on my hair. Do you know of any products or treatments that may help bring some of the curl back.?
Love it!!!
So pretty!
Just found your blog via Pinterest. I live in Australia & I wanted to tell you that your tutorials are the simplest and clearest I’ve seen. Thanks so much from a grateful (& excited to try) Aussie chick. BTW, took me a couple of minutes to realize what you meant with “bangs”. We call it a fringe here!! You’ve inspired me to try something new!! I’ve subscribed & looking forward to seeing what’s next. And P.S. – I’m a Christian and love that you have included your faith.
love your hair!!
Thanks so much for this video. You explain things so well.
Thanks for the tips. I always try to tease my hair with a brush and now I get why it doesn’t work!
Also, do you ever wear your hair straight? I’d love to see your tips on flat ironing, defrizzing,a and keeping hair straight to the end of the day.

I LOVE your blog! my hair is about shoulder length and i’ve been trying to tease it like this but it still wants to part in the middle. My salon is out of the aquage and igave them my name and they said they should have it in tomorrow. Will that help keep the tease in better? Thanks for all youre awesome tips!
Thank you!
I love your blog – I have it bookmarked on my browser so I can refer to it quickly in the mornings when I need a fast, cute style. I am the worst at getting up on time and was constantly throwing my hair up in a slick ponytail, but now that I’ve found your blog I am doing some much cuter, looser things with my hair and I LOVE it! Thanks for the teasing tutorial – like so many others who have posted here, I have a hard time getting enough tease going on in my hair, so I’m glad to see that it’s probably because I don’t do enough of it to start. I plan on trying aquage as soon as I can get out of the middle of nowhere and into the city where they would carry such a thing! Thanks again!
I tried teasing my hair this morning! I think I still need some practice cause it didn’t look as good as yours, but love your blog. I like your tutorials because its you actually doing it. I hate on tv when they show you an “easy” look and it’s a stylish doing it to some model. That does NOT help me do it to my own hair…keep up the good work girl!!
I also signed up for birchbox in large part for you!!
<3 Heidi
I SOOO needed this! Thanks!!!
How do you keep your hair from getting static-y? My hair always gets so static-y when I tease it. Any tips? 🙂
Kate – I absolutely love your blog. How do you style the front of your hair now that you have grown your bangs out? I always struggle with the front of my hair and was even going to cut bangs to try to make it easier but I always hate my hair with bangs! Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
are you doing away with your bangs?? or just for this video?? I like it both ways!
fitfashlife.blogspot.com
Cute as can be & very helpful. I loved the makeup too.
I had to Pin this. Thanks for the info.
I love your hair tutorials, i seriously put my kids to bed and watch them all LOL… oops, i should be cleaning!!
I have a couple of questions
1) i first ‘met’ you when i saw a pic of your hair on pintrest, you know in friends when everyone wanted the ‘Rachel’ cut, i think your cut is the most coveted.. ( do u know the one i am talking about).. anyways, if so, what do i ask for when i take it to my salon, or should i take a picture of it in… also does it work for all types of hair?
2)It seems like your hair does whatever you want to it. it that true? It seems to hold curl well, never looks brassy, always looks like it hold a style.. do you have any ‘hair issues’??
thanks!!!!!!!!!!
ps.. this is the one i am talking about

Thank you so much for this tutorial. This is exactly what I needed since i have always had trouble with volume at the top of my head. It was great timing for me!
I have to tell you how much I loved this video in particular. I have always teased my hair but never got the results you did. So guess what? I was doing it the wrong way. I would tease from the top part, not the underneath part. When I teased this morning, underneath, guess what? I looked like your video. And I fingered it into place, sprayed loosely, and wow, it stayed great all day. Thanks so much. Just love, love, love your blog.
Ok I watched the video did exactly as u said and…my hair fell flat about 20 mins later. I do have fine, thin hair that usually does this. I’m beyond frustrated! My hair looks good for literally 20 mins then it falls flat! I use products, root lifters, back comb, hair spray and…it falls! Every.single.time! Help!!!!!
I just got my hair cut and it’s almost exactly your length! So glad that I found your blog from pintrest! I was thinking about buying the Aquage uplifting foam to hold my volume throughout the day..should I? Also, do you have any suggestions for when I tease my hair, and it splits down the middle of my part almost every time! Please help! Thank you! (:
Hi Kate, Thanks for this tutorial.
While I love the volume that teasing gives my fine thin hair, it is always a mess to get out afterwards, and i find I’m damaging my hair trying to get the tangles out. Any tips for making it less painful and damaging afterward?
Thanks,
Sarah
Any suggestion on how to prevent naturally curly hair from getting crazy frizzy from teasing? My hair seems to turn into a rats nest with minimal back combing and doesn’t soften out as your’s does in the demo. Thanks!
What is your foundation/ face routine you did while making this video? Your skin looks so flawless and naturual!
LOVE your blog!! I have fine really long dark brown hair and I always am trying to figure things that will help with volume and texture. If I highlighted my hair and added some lighter colors(which my husband really wants) would that help to add some texture? I love your natural highlights!
I have very heavy hair and regardless of how many layers/texturing I add to my cut I just can’t seem to get the volume to stay long at all. Is there any type of product I should use while I’m teasing to help it stay longer?
I love this style! How do you part your bangs this way? I have similar bangs to yours, and mine never stay to the side that I want them to like yours do.
I love this video! Could you do a video on how to tease hair on straight hair since its different? i suck at teasing my hair when its straight, i need tips! HELP!
Kate- I found a link to one of your hair tutorials on Pinterest and then I fell in LOVE with your site! I have never been good at doing my makeup/hair/nails etc : ) But your videos made me not afraid to try new styles with my hair! Still need practice but that “I’m only going to mess up so why try attitude is gone!” You seem so down to earth and are so willing to share everything with us- it’s seriously AWESOME! May I also say (for the products you endorse/recommend) that you are a great sales lady as well- since visiting your blog I have purchased Essie products (LOVE!), aquage (EVEN MORE LOVE!),and Kenra 25! I knew I could do this girly stuff if only someone would explain it in a simple, friendly manner! Kate you honestly have inspired me to do my hair more, get dressed in an “outfit”, do my nails, and experiment- thanks for reawakening the “lady” in me! – Jen
Love love love this tutorial (and your whole site). Your tutorial finally made sense out of teasing for me – I’m now finally able to do this! Trying out the pretty ponytail today for my day 2 hair. 🙂
Thank you sooooo much!!! I just love your whole blog.
I love your blog…and your hair! I’m wondering if teasing your hair everyday makes it break easier? I feel that when I tease mine often I end up with a lot of little hairs. Thanks!
Your tutorials are exactly what has been lacking from my hair styling knowledge. I always wished my stylist would give me lessons on what to do, and your videos are now my go-to resource. You inspired me to curl my hair & tease it out this morning, and it worked beautifully. Thank you so very much.
I know it’s been a while since you posted this video so I hope you get this question. Is your hair layered? I have med/long hair that is very fine but somewhat thick. I”m getting it done in a few days and wondered if you would suggest layers. I tried to curl mine with the curling iron like you did in the “beachy waves” video but the curl doesn’t hold well. It fell out before I even left the house. Would layers help? Please respond and thanks for the easy, fun to watch, videos! You’re the best!
what lip gloss are you wearing in this video? I thought i saw it somewhere but cant seem to find it. Thanks!
Uh! I tried to tease my hair after I curled it and I pulled all of my curl out 🙁
Love the video..it seems the retro, 50s look is back!!
human hair extensions clip in australia
Kate I just wanted to thank you for all your simple and great tips! I have fine hair and have been challenged in the area of style my whole life! However, I finally am able to get my hair to do things thanks to your videos!! Also I was so blessed to read your statement regarding your faith in Jesus Christ! Thank you! May God continue to bless you and your family! Keep the awesome tips coming, I am a new frequent visitor!
Heeeey. I’m a college freshman and I sort of use this blog as a bible.. lol. But I have significantly longer hair and thick hair, yet very fine strands, and when I tease it it always falls, and I also tend to have a permapart so it always peaks through after my hair falls and It makes me sad! ): How can I get it to stay teased up and partless throughout the day??
I also think you look gorgeous in these pictures in particular, (and all your pics), and your makeup looks fantastic here. Pretty lady!
So that’s how it’s done! You make it look easy 🙂 Thanks for the video.
I LOVE your blogs!Ido have a question …… Is there anything you can suggest to help hold my curls about an hour hour and a half my curls fall . I have naturally wavy hair and i dont know if that is the reason why or not … Any advice you would be able to give me would be great thxs and keep up the great work !
Is there any advice on combing through the backcombing after you are through with your do? I always end up with SO MANY tangles and was wondering if you had any advice?
Love your tutorials! Question, though…I have a hard time teasing because my hair is longer. any tips on how better to tease longer hair?
LLLLLLLLLLLooooooooooooooooooooooVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Thank you.
Hi!
Which cricket comb do you use? I’d love to have more volume in my hair.
Thanks!
You’re awesome!!
I am going through and slowly watching all of your videos. I have very similar textured hair and always complained about my lack of volume. Until watching your videos, I had never teased my hair before. Your videos are so helpful and for the first time in my life am I actually enjoying my hair, because I know what to do with it. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos and be so sweet in them!
I watched your video today because I’ve always wondered how to tease my hair. The video was great, but it ended just as you were talking about combing it out from the lion’s mane to an actual hairstyle. What do I do next? Is there another video?
Useful tips of hair teasing. Informative & understandable. Love your hair style as well. Thanks.

Thank you!!! I have naturally curly hair that is thick and lovely, but I’ve noticed as I inch down through the years from 35 to 40 (38 at present) that the curl has loosened at the roots, leaving it flat on top of my head. Ugh! From the top of my head to the ends of my hair, I look the shape of the Liberty Bell!!! I’ve tried teasing a few times but couldn’t seem to get it right…this looks easy and is so well explained and demonstrated! Great job!!
This was really interesting, I have never heard of uplifting foam and now really want to try it. I’ve used lots of root lifters, like you, and haven’t found one that really works so I’m excited to try something new. I liked your video a lot, it was helpful and I want to try your tricks. It reminded me of this pony tail teasing tutorial that is easy and helpful for up-dos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA_WduNP_qo. You demonstrated it so well I feel like I can follow it step-by-step. Thanks!
I love that you did this video and let your personality show through when you finished teasing and acted as if you were done. Loved it….

I was just curious whether you tease your hair when you wear it straight? I have similar texture/thickness hair and just wondered how to get volume when wearing it straight.
Beautiful style and very simple, Thank You!
Hi Kate. I recently discovered your blog and I am really enjoying trying these new hair styles. But I cannot tease my hair to save my life! It doesn’t hold. I’ve used root lifting products and volumizing products. Even when I go to the salon, my hair stylist will tease my hair and it will be flat in an hour! Do you have any suggestions? I have a lot of fine hair and it’s always so flat. Thanks for any advice!
Do you have your own page? Would love to follow you and your cute hairstyles!!!
Hi Kate!
Your blog is amazing! I’m totally impressed that you manage to gave such cute hair with 2 tiny kiddos running around…I have only have one so I can’t imagine two lol. May I ask what haircut you have. It looks like fairly medium to possibly shortish layers? I’d love to get this cut!!!! Thanks so much!!!!
Hey Kate! I always end up with knots when I tease. I should also add that I have bone straight hair and usually curl it before teasing. Any tips?

Thanks for all of the helpful tips! I am 25 and feel like I have never quite figured out how to do my hair justice. I have tried a few of your hairstyles and have been sort of successful! It is encouraging. I do have a question – when I try to tease my hair, I have a serious static problem and it makes the tease sort of just a mess. I have always been leary of wearing my hair down because of static. It is a little longer than yours. Do you have any suggestions? I love volume so would really like to find a way to get this to work!
Great tutorial. Thanks so much.
First of all, you are gorgeous! I have super fine hair and not much of it. I watched your video and thought “Right. With that kind of hair getting volume is easy.” But I applied your teasing techniques to my hair as well as the curling and straightening techniques. Wow! What a difference! It worked even on my crappy hair, lol. I used to tease my hair just a little because I was afraid of it being too big. But pulling the top layer of hair with my fingers to conceal the back combing really worked. Your flat iron technique also worked great on my hair. Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you SO much! Your tutorial is perfect!
