The Chic Updo

next
Homemade Donut Holes
Have we all seen this photo?
I see it all the time from brides, bridesmaids, or any other client going to a formal event.
It’s beautiful.

So I used that as a little inspiration for a easy updo tutorial!
The Chic Updo

(Cream t-shirt is from Target)
*What you won’t see in the video tutorial is the finish with hairspray. I try not to spray a bunch of hairspray with my camera lens open. So be sure to spray with a strong hold hairspray when you are finished!*
This may be a little bit more complicated than some my other tutorials. And it’s really best on my length or longer. So if you have shorter hair and get frustrated, stick with half up styles for now!
You’ll see photos of a cleaner updo and one that I messed up a little bit by rubbing my fingers over it.

(Yellow Dress is from Macy’s

So make sure you go somewhere fancy and show off your new ‘do!

This updo is precious! I love it. My hair is a little shorter than yours but I might try it anyway. I was wondering, do you have any suggestions for styling thick hair? My hair is a long bob. It just is difficult to style sometimes.

I recently use that same photo for inspiration, but it was when my hair was much longer. I cut off a lot of it, so now I will have to try styling it your way!

I always keep my hair in a short bob but for the past few months I’ve been letting my hair grow out, now it is almost to my shoulders. I’m at the point where I want to chop it all off again but since recently finding your blog you’ve giving me inspiration to keep growing it out. I can’t wait to try all these styles. Thank you for all your tutorials, I love every style!

I have been trying to grow my hair out for the past few months. My length is just a bit past my shoulders, but when I had my hair colored and “trimmed” last week (I am going to a new stylist… mine moved) she asked me about my layers. I told her I wanted to keep some of my long layers… well she didn’t listen so well. So now I have a very short layer. I am having problems doing any kind of up-do… do you have any suggestions? I haven’t tried curling it yet… I am afraid I will have a big fluffy mess and look a bit like a mushroom.

You are a blessing to all hair-impaired women everywhere! Thank you for all the thought, time and energy you put into your blog. I just discovered you a couple of weeks ago and enjoy checking in daily. I’ve started using your Redkin regimen and my hair is looking and feeling MUCH better. Thanks to last week’s tutorial my bangs are looking better too – despite my cowlick – yea! Now I’ll be trying this pretty updo.

I LOVE your hair. I would like to get mine colored similarly since I think we have about the same tones anyway. What do I need to tell my hair stylist? I really like how it’s slightly darker underneath…not BAM! darker. 🙂 Thank you for all the wonderful tutes! So glad I stumbled upon your site a couple of weeks ago!

Dani: curling it will help when styling in an updo. And hairspray! But if you aren’t happy with your layers, talk to your stylist and see if just a little bit of thinning or texturizing at the ends could help them lay flatter.

Just a thought!

Hi there!
I am officially addicted to your blog 🙂 You seem so personable and kind and I love your tutorials!!
I have a question for you. I have an a line bob (chin-length) and I am hoping to begin growing it out. Do you have any suggestions on how to get through the awkward stages? I usually get so frustrated that I end up chopping it again. When I gew it out before I got it colored often and that got me through. I don’t think I can afford that right now though. I have fine hair that generally needs a lot of help 🙂

So I just found your blog through Pinterest and holy smokes, THIS WAS THE HAIRSTYLE I showed my stylist for my wedding back in ’08 and on our trial run she could not figure it out. Come wedding day, we had to go with a totally different, totally “too clean” of a look for me but learning how you did it, we went about it all wrong!

Definitely adding you to my Google Reader, can’t wait to see what is in store next, cute blog!!

I tried this in my hair because I think it’s so cute. I have SUUUUPER thick hair (not complaining), and it either took 25 bobby pins to hold it in, or my bobbies got all bent out of shape because I tried to secure too much hair with each pin. Can you recommend some bobby pins for really thick hair to help make styles like this possible? Thanks.

I have already worn this hairstyle 5 times in the last week and receive tons of complements. I just found your blog and I’ve spent more time here lately than pinterest! I’ve tried many of your “up-do” styles without much luck. My hair is about the length of yours but super thick and layered. Where you use one pin to hold, I use 4 and still it feels like its on the verge of falling. I love the look of my hair up and so does my husband, but I’ve never been able to do it myself. I so envy you girls that can just throw it up and it looks great! Any tips for me?

Thank you for giving us the confidence to try something new! I’ve been with the same style close to 20 years. Watching you and learning through your simple instructions make it so dummy proof! With 3 girls I’d like them to learn how to do different styles and get creative. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!

I never wear my hair up because i am self conscious about my big ears, but i tried this for my office Christmas party last night and it was so easy and pretty. I loved having the side pieces slightly draped over my ears, but still enough exposure to show off my great earrings.
