7 Tips and Tricks for Hairstyling
My favorite candle
I get asked a lot of questions about hair but probably the most frequent one is how my clients can style hair the same way I style it. After having a few styling lessons, here’s what I have figured out:
1. Move slower. A lot of times hair is something that people really care about, but they don’t spend enough time on it. And it’s okay to spend time on your hair. Adding 10 more minutes into your morning can make a world of difference.
2. When flat ironing, or curling your hair, slowly glide the tool through your hair at an even speed. Racing the flat iron over a section, large or small, will be completely ineffective.
3. Don’t be afraid to get right down to the roots. Nothing screams amateur quite like flat hair at the roots, and volume at the ends. Yes, round brushing helps that, but sometimes all you need is to inch that flat iron just a little closer to your scalp for lift!
4. Do not be afraid of hair products. Use them! Generously! When I’m showing a client just how much root lifter, or hair spray, or straightening serum to use, they are usually surprised. If you are going to pay for good hair products, you deserve good hair. Use the products!
5. There is no such thing as a cute “wash and go” style. It will usually always look like crap in about an hour. Just go ahead and decide that you have to do something to your hair if you care about how it looks.
6. The reason Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s hair always looks great 1/2 up or in a ponytail is because they began with well styled hair. If you style your hair as if you are going to wear it down, put some hairspray or finished products in it, andthen pull it back, it will style much easier. It’ll have more bounce. It’ll have more “grip” with the Bobby pins and ponytail holder.
7. Blowdry upside down and finish will a “cool shot” of air all over. Easy way to get lots of volume.

Hi Jennifer! Check out this post for recommendations on my fav products! http://itsthesmallthingsblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/hair-products-i-use-on-daily-basis.html
Ok, loved your number 5! I’m loving your website. I’m trying to grow my hair out more and it feels like it’s in between lengths so all your helpful hints make me feel better. I almost want to just put my laptop on my dress while I’m getting ready and just use your ideas. 🙂 Thanks and I’m going to mention your awesomeness on my blog too. Come by and visit sometime.

Aimee: THANK YOU so much for the wonderful mention on your blog! You’re so sweet! And your hair looks great in your photo at the bottom of the post! I’m glad that you’ve been inspired to style your hair!!
Ok I am loving your blog – my new fave! I am always looking for good hair tips and tricks.
Hi Kate,
I’m so glad to have run into your blog! I used to work as a receptionist at an awesome salon, but now I stay home with my two girlies and baby boy (on-the-way). I really miss the style tips and new product info, so I’m excited to have your blog at my fingertips! Thanks for being honest with #5; I hated getting calls from people who wouldn’t take product advice from their stylists and would then complain that their hair looked like crap. Anyway, love the other aspects of your blog too!
Kate,
I just found your blog yesterday and am glad I did! Thank you for sharing your tips and tutorials on hairstyling, they are so helpful! I do have a question regarding tip #3: what do you mean by inching the flat iron closer to the scalp for more lift? Could you please explain how to do this? Thank you!
Lydia: that just means, put the flat iron closer to your scalp than you usually would!
Love your blog!
So glad to find your blog on Pinterest!! Love the demo videos!!
I LOVE your blog, but just sometimes wish there were more tips and tricks for people with naturally very curly hair…like myself. Curly hair like mine is a entire blog in itself probably. I have great curl, and now that I have the right product and tricks I love it! I just sometimes feel like I can only do so much with my hair, and having curly hair does mean I don’t blow dry my hair 100% daily, which tends to make me feel not well put together….any tips or tricks on naturally curly/thick hair?
@Nekco: You can do most of the half up styles with naturally curly hair, just give them a shot!
I know it must vary from hair type to hair type, but do you have any recommendations on how often to wash hair? My stylists advice has varied from every day to 3-4 days a week. My hair is of medium thickness, with a very slight wave if left to air dry, is long (about 2 inches past my underarms) and is a little greasier than average.
Just found your blog from interest and I have been watching your hairs videos for about 3 hours. I. Getting some hair products tomorrow and going to try one of your hair styles hopefully on Tuesday! Love the blog and keep up the good work!
kate thanks so much for your blog. i used to love doing my hair but got lazy and cheap..and actually wondered why my hair is now always flat and boring. thanks for the reminder that nice looking hair takes time and products! 🙂
Kate, seeing weekly top five tips, or something to that effect, would be awesome! Thanks your videos 🙂
I’ve really enjoyed looking at your blog. I have a question: I have such a hard time getting my hair really dry enough to style. I’ll rough dry it upside down and it seems dry, but after I’m through styling with a round brush and hair dryer, the style falls flat. When I put my hands into my hair, I can then feel cool spots where it seems to still be damp. Very frustrating! Any tips or ideas? The obvious answer is to dry it longer, but it’s hard to tell when it’s dry as the dampness “hides” when the hair is warm.
i am one amoung ur 13k odd followers.. i really like the hairstyle session of ur blog.. its simple and nice… could u give more hair styling posts for curly hair???
Your blog has changed my beauty routine so much! I’ve always had “blah” hair (compared to my sister who has Herbal Essences commercial hair). I love watching all of your totorials and trying different things. Now my sister tells me she is actually jealous of MY hair since she has thick long hair and has a hard time with cute styles. Mine is shoulder length and VERY fine, but now I am able to style it in so many cute ways. Your sense of style, not only in beauty but in home decor, is inspiring. Happy late birthday btw 🙂
I came across your blog on pinterest looking for a new look I love your blog and think you are so kind to take your time to help hair impaired ppl like me!! My husband loves long hair and i do too but it is hard to style and is just not me. You have inspiredme and made me want to take the initiative to cut and get cute!! Thank you and God bless you!!
I always wondered what the ‘cold’ shot was on my blow dryer. Then I read about using it to close the cuticles on my hair. I can see a huge difference! Thanks!
I shot a video with a hairstylist recently and she told me she uses just a few drops of a certain Schwarzkopf cream to style her hair in a few seconds. You can watch her demo on http://bit.ly/RpyA2x.
Wow..!!!! It sounds nice and interesting too. I will definitely try it once with my hairs..:)
your blog is really amazing……i love your tips

I’m into hair styling but my sense of fashion when it comes to clothes is really awful. I always rely on an Image consultant Singapore to help me out with my clothes, especially during important occasions.
This post on tips and tricks was exactly what I needed to read today. What stands out is “there is no great wash & go style.” and the part about taking enough time to get it right. I want full, wavy hair (with bangs) but I always try to do it faster/easier than I should, and as you say, it ends up looking like crap. This is what my stylists don’t tell me clearly enough: put in the time (and product) or accept your hair just isn’t going to look like you want it to. Reading it here sinks in better 🙂
Your hair looks great in this photo .The information is very interesting. I do have a similar blog with a motto to give quality suggestions and advises to my readers. I would like to re post it in my blog. Would you mind granting me permission?

Great blog! However, I am not that talented with doing my own hair as it is very thin. I am very interested, though, in what your tips would be for choosing the right hair stylist. I have only ever been to a few stylists but I notice that they all do hair differently. http://www.bankzsalon.com/hair-styling/
