My go-to casual hairstyles

next
David’s Big Boy Room

momhairone, two, three, four

On days when David and I are just chillin’ or running errands, I’ll typically keep it pretty casual in the beauty department. My sheer lip balm collection is growing, and replacing the pigmented lipsticks I used to carry around with me.

My hair elastic collection is growing, as well as hair products that give me a bit of texture on day 2 to work with.

And I find that I repeat a few of the same hairstyles more often these days.

My hair doesn’t take all that long to style, so it’s like not it’s a pain in the butt to work on in the morning, but I definitely don’t hate giving it a break every few days.

1. I love a messy bun. So does my husband so that is an extra perk. I like loosening the nap a good bit, and even pulling some hairs out around my face. I like it to look lived in.

2. The side french braid has become a perfect alternative to the messy bun, while still keeping my hair back. On rainy days, or any time I want my hair back, I’ll throw a low braid in it.

3. I like doing the ballerina bun on days where my hair is curled nicely, but I want something a little more casual.

4. The looser and softer the waves, the better. Plus I find it’s easier to recover them on day 2 if I want to re-curl in the morning!

All these styles look great! Love the Elsa braid (as my girls and I call it). Thanks for the inspiration.

All of those look great! I am so glad to be following your blog. I cut my hair SUPER short after post-pregnancy hormones made me lose quite a bit and the rest kind of just looked stringy and bad, but I am working on growing it out again and can’t wait for it to get long enough to try some of these styles! I wish there was a magic way to make it grow!!!

I love the messy bun! I need to figure out how to make mine look more textured like that!

I’ve been loving either a sock bun or a really high messy bun. I love how pulling my hair on the top of my head gives a bit of an instant face lift. πŸ˜‰ and it also keeps it out of my baby’s fingers!
Although recently, my 3 year old boy keeps getting distraught if I put my hair up, because he thinks it looks prettier down. πŸ˜‰

LOVE these!! Our babies are SUPER close in ages (I have 3 and one on the way) My daughter was born last year on 12-12-13 and my baby is due Feb 26th, 2014… πŸ™‚ Love it!

I cannot find the tutorial that you did a while ago, showing how you curl your hair like that to start off with! I am letting my inverted bob grow out, and it is now shoulder length. I used to just be able to use a round brush to style but I am finding that as it grows out I may need to learn how to use a curling iron!!

Merry Christmas!

Even though i’m not a mom myself, ( although i babysit kids ) my go to hairstyle is either a fishtail braid or a regular braid. With my horrible hair type, ( thin, dry, damaged, naturally curly) its wicked hard to find easy long lasting hairstyles. πŸ˜›

Before I started blogging, I started following your posts via pinterest a couple years ago- you taught me how to do my hair. Your tutorials weren’t just, “Watch me do this,” but you explained each and every step in simple terms- and for the first time in my life I could do something other than leave my hair straight. My own mom even said to me, “Who are you and what have you done with my daughter?” when I did an updo that you taught me, haha. I can’t thank you enough!

This is helpful. But as a non-mom (who is apparently a bit sensitive about it), I appreciated the more inclusive tone in the similar “simple and quick hairstyles” post you did at the end of 2013 – lots of us need quick and easy ways to style our hair, whether we’re moms or not! Thanks. Merry Christmas!

I completely understand and am sorry that my title made it sound exclusive. I didn’t intend for that in any way–I get a lot of requests for “mom hair” so I thought the title would simply be a direct way to answer those requests. I’m away from my computer but will try to adjust title ASAP. I never want to seem insensitive to that.

And yet the title is still the same…

I don’t have a problem with the title. I do have a problem with you not following through.

Erin, I was out of town for Christmas and away from my computer (which is the only way I can make adjustments to my site).

You guys need to chill. She obviously would never want to hurt someone’s feelings but for Christ’s sake it’s hair tutorials and not everything is about you and your life. If you don’t like it go somewhere else but don’t be rude to Kate who doesn’t have to do any of this.

Oh man, I thought there was a new hair tutorial. πŸ™

I really would like to see how you adapt a style like the messy bun without curled hair. The more children I’ve had (#4 is six weeks old), the less time I have for extra steps like curling. I just need to throw it up as quickly as possible. I do the fishtail braid quite often for that reason.

Reply
Sherry says · 12.23.14

I have never curled my hair for the messy bun and it works fine. Not quite as nice as Kate’s, but it works for those days when quicker is better!

Reply
Megan Brewer says · 12.23.14

Love all your hairstyles! I think someone else already said this, but I feel like I almost never have time for the extra step of curling, while having 2 kids, but I really want to! Maybe it doesn’t really take as long as we think, but it’s the thought of doing it that just seems daunting. Tell us that we can do it Kate! My hair is in a ponytail pretty much every day,but I try to make it look a little better than just a flat, slick back ponytail…it’s still pretty boring! Thanks for the inspiration to try something different.

Great inspiration for both moms and anyone needing quick styles for every day. Perfect for me because I’m usually running late for work, and these styles still look put together when I’m in a rush! Thanks for sharing.

I find that when I take the time to do a good blow out on my hair when I wash it, I can get three days out of it, which ends up saving me time in the long run. On day 1 I leave it down, on day 2 I add some dry shampoo and usually twist and pin my bangs back, and on day 3 I add a little more dry shampoo and either style it in a cute ponytail or wear a cute hat. Dry shampoo is my new hair BFF. πŸ™‚ Although my husband avoids the bathroom like the plague when I’m spraying it!

Even without the added pressure of being a mom, I live in these hairstyles. The ballerina bun and the braided half up are the two styles I find myself going back to again and again!

Thanks for the inspiration- I work from home- and admittedly have become quite lazy in the beauty department. This inspired me to try to do something with my mop- I tried the french braid. I need some practice, but my 4 year old daughter told me that I looked beautiful with my Elsa braid. πŸ™‚ (My hair is NOTHING like Elsa’s… but the fact that it’s braided to the side, she thinks looks like Elsa!) So it’s a win in my opinion!

Kate, i know i probably shouldnt be asking this out loud but were you able to block — ahem–the trouble maker?? Just asking and wondering. πŸ˜‰ sorry for all the trouble it caused, i could have kept my mouth shut to create peace but i felt i needed to say something. Sorry, i dont want conflict on your blog. πŸ™‚ πŸ˜‰

My go-to is the messy bun! The day I found that tutorial was the day my entire life changed! πŸ™‚ I don’t curl my hair first – in fact, this is a great go-to for day-2 hair. I tend to pin my hair with more of a curl-it-around-my-finger approach after starting with a ponytail, then pulling the curls loose, spraying and scrunching the bun. Works great for on-the-go days!

Jasmin says · 12.23.14

Would love to see which “day 2” hair products you recommend! I have long, fine hair and nothing seems to work to give it texture and “umph”.

I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for asking! Hopefully she replies! I also wonder if she uses a dry shampoo regularly with day 2 hair.

Kate,
I appreciate your sensitivity. As someone who “tried” several months before conceiving, I believe you understand the sensitivity concerning this circumstance as much as anyone. As a momma of 2 who “tried” for 7 years before I became a mom I can also understand as well. However, looking back to that time in my life, I wish I could have been more understanding. Women who are pregnant or who are already mothers do not intentionally try to offend or hurt anyone. They are simply going along with life. In fact, most are very concerned for anyone that is struggling to adopt/conceive. There are just some things that only mothers can understand and relate to and that’s ok:) we are all going through different stages in life. A “mom”hairstyle is just one of those things…. Along with being pooped on, puked on, drooled on, and the craziest sweetest love you can ever imagine. Seriously, you won’t believe how wonderful it is when it does happen for you. When I did finally become a mom, I realized so much. Some things just clicked that I never understood before. This post about hair is relatable to everyone, mother or not. I looked at it along these lines…. you were addressing everone, oh and hey if you happen to be a mom, that includes you too because these hairstyles are quick and easy and SUPERFLY πŸ™‚ A good lesson I have learned in life is to eat the chicken and spit out the bones. Some things apply to you, some things don’t, some things apply to us all. Let the things that don’t roll off your back for now, you’ll gain much more peace throughout any process. And for those who are “waiting” know that there are women who feel ya! Prayers for all of you.

I love your whole blog, whether it is “mom” hairstyles or not. I am a full time student and have a full time job. I like quick and easy hairstyles. My go to is a messy bun (except yours looks about 1000x better :)) normally with a headband. I make headbands so they are normally my go to. My hair is about your length, but I would love to learn how to do the braid that you showed. Do you have a video for that one?

Thanks for sharing all of these adorable, yet easy hairstyles! I really like the easy curls in your fourth panel– it definitely doesn’t look like it is a quick and easy style! In fact, I’ll be taking a look at that tutorial tomorrow morning! It would be a lot of fun to have that hairstyle just to help change up the day.
