Noticing the Moments

next
Warm it Up

I had this moment the other day as I sat on my office floor cleaning out my closet. I came across this journal I wrote from the time Justin and I began dating until our first Christmas as a couple. It was about 2 1/2 months and I documented all of our significant moments, along with just the day to day events.

I turned to a page dated November 4th, 2006. I wrote, in great detail, about the night Justin told me he loved me. It was dripping with sappiness and romance. I flipped ahead and read about when we started talking about getting married.

And I took this brief pause.

There I sat, pregnant with our first child, reading a journal I wrote 7 years ago to this guy I really liked, packing up our townhouse in order to move into our very first purchased home.

It was such a crazy realization to look back and see the many, many blessings God has graciously given us.

And I’m glad I took a moment to appreciate this wonderful time in our lives.

How cool is that? A time when you’re hit with warmth and your heart swells from gratitude. It’s so refreshing when this happens, and it really helps to minimize the stress we have daily.

I’m happy for you, my dear.

Lovely. I’ve learned that my journals help me to look back and see God’s hand. In those times, I couldn’t always see it. But having the perspective of hindsight right there, I just marvel. Those moments of reflection are humbling and awesome (in the traditional sense).

I love this. Makes me want to go find my old journals and plant myself on the couch to read them. I need to pause more and take time to look back at memories.

How sweet. 🙂 This inspires me to write in my journal. I used to keep one on the computer up until we got married, and then stopped. I keep thinking of starting again, but never have. It’s been three years, and we have two kids now, and I wish I had written more.

What sweet memories?! I know I often times live in today only and what struggles I may be facing or simply living for the future. But I’ve learned recently that it is crucial to realize your past, learn from it and count all the blessings that you’ve received over the years. It really gives you a different perspective on life today. Makes you (well at least me) appreciative for the breaths I’m taking now and for the plans God holds for me because clearly he has always blessed me and has always worked everything out for the my good. Thanks for this post today, Kate.

Love those moments! Memories like that are why I keep boxes and boxes of old letters… probably unnecessarily. One of these days I’ll purge them (maybe if/when we move), but in the meantime I love going through every couple years and remembering how I felt when I received them. And to recognize, as you did, how God works in our lives. It’s amazing to look back and see His faithfulness!

I am so glad you have that journal to treasure. I have never been a person to journal but sometimes I wish I did so I could look back at what was going through my head at different points in my life. However, I have a box with notes my husband and I wrote to each other over the years and I was cleaning out my closet the other week and found it. Brought back so many memories!

Nice reminder this morning. I keep a journal for each of my boys documenting accomplishments, moments, and memories. Sometimes I just write about how cute their toes are or something else silly. It is fun to go back and read how things changed from month to month.

Keep a journal when baby comes! I started one right after Dez was born & documented all the new things he did each month, along with weight, length etc…
When he is older he will love going back & looking at his milestones.

Isn’t it great to reminisce the romantic history of you and your loved one?! I think it’s great to look back and see how it all started, see what good and bad times you’ve been through and then see where you are in current time. Great post and so glad you are always open to sharing about your life!

Those are the moments that make time stop and you forget any stresses in your life. I used to be an avid journaler (is that a word?) and it’s fun to look back.
On another note, 11/4/06 is the day I married the love of my life. Apparently it was a great day to be in love!

Gosh are we on the same brain wave or what?! I was cleaning out the nursery closet this past weekend and found a letter that my now husband wrote to me about five years ago – it was the first letter he had ever written to me and I was moving away at the time so it was one of those “don’t read this until you get there” letters and I cried! I’m blaming it on the hormonal changes of pregnancy but it was cute – ha! And I have a tendency to keep all of my old calendars so I was looking through them and realized I wrote down the weirdest things. I told Hubs that if he ever wanted to know when he fell and hurt his pinky, I would probably have it written down. Or the day he bought his truck, or the day he got his bow and arrow, or the day we argued about spaghetti? Funny stuff. =] And it is crazy!! Five years ago I was moving away and here we are, back together, married for almost two years and having our first child! Eek!

Kate- every time you post a story regarding your life timeline, I am amazed how similar we are! I was born a month before you, I married my husband a week after you, and hilariously enough, we began dating in 2006 during the same season as you! We are preparing to move into our first purchased home like you. Thank you for being so incredibly relatable to me! I love hearing your stories cause I’m always thinking, Yep, that’s me too!
