In Memory of Grits

next
It’s the middle of summer, how is your hair doing?

I have some sad news to share.

Grits passed away a couple weeks ago.

We found out earlier this year that he had a few different diseases and that we likely only had a few months left with him. Learning of his diseases was difficult, but in a way, I’m glad I had a few months to really cherish him before he passed.

If you follow along on Instagram, you know that Grits was always around. He was my little shadow, and often made himself quite present by meowing at me. He slept with me each night, he followed me from room to room as I said goodnight to my kids, and truly was the ideal lap cat!

I miss him terribly!

This is the first time in 15 years that I haven’t had a cat, and it’s lonely. I imagine we will get another cat or two, likely kittens, but I’m not sure when I’ll be ready for that.

If you knew this news already (I shared it on Instagram last week), and sent me a message, thank you.

I’m so sorry about your loss. I know how you feel. I lost two of my 3 cats. One was 19 years old and one was 16. That’s a long time to love on an animal. My Tigger was the 19-year-old and he was so dear to me he was like a little shadow as well. Followed me everywhere. Meowed a lot and was very vocal and slept with me. I still do have one cat left and he is going on 12 years now. There is a hole in your life when they go. my mom always said this to me :Time heals all wounds. 🥲

The weight of the decision to let our pets go is a burden and a blessing. It’s the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, and I don’t know that I would have made the more compassionate—and less selfish—choice with the support of my vet and my partner. I worried for weeks afterwards that I had done the wrong thing.

I hope that you find comfort in knowing that you were doing right by Grits up til the very end. You were luck to have him, and he was lucky to be loved by you.

So sorry for your loss Kate. This news really brought tears to my eyes as it reminds me of when we lost a 14 and 15 yr old female cats last year and a 15 yr old male cat just last month. It’s never easy, now we have 2 younger males, 5 and 7 yrs old. They are all rescued from our backyard. I will tell Adieu, Autumn and Winter in heaven to welcome and play with Grits 💜😽

I’m so sorry to hear about Grits. I was sad a few years ago when Gravy passed and I can’t believe they’re both gone now! That is a blessing to have been able to cherish him a few more months before it was time for him to go. I have a little shadow of my own that follows me room to room and my heart goes out to you.

We lost our Lab in April and his mother, a blue healer about 18 months ago. First time in about 15 or so years that we haven’t had a dog. Both dogs belonged to our daughter, but when she moved to the city, she left them with us on the farm where they had always been. We miss them terribly.

Hi Kate,
I am so sorry to hear about beautiful Grits, it is so hard to say goodbye to our fur babies.
I’ve always enjoyed him in the background of your stories, lying on the bed or the floor during your try-ons. And also hearing him miaowing, making his presence felt.
Sending you best wishes, he will be missed by many.
Pinder

He was perfect for you. Soulmates come in all shapes and sizes. I recently read that when you are thinking of someone who has moved on, that because they are telling all their new friends in heaven about you. I believe this! Grits is bragging to everyone about you. Hang in there, thinking of you all.
