There are times when I appreciate some kind of shapewear under thinner dresses or dresses that are a bit more fitted. And there are other times when I just want a layer underneath a dress for comfort! I’ve tried some that are great and some that are terrible, but I recently tried 5 shorts to see which one I liked the most for summer! See my results below.
Skims Soft Smoothing Seamless Shorts (#1) – I had a bit of trouble with this pair rolling down on me, but I think that is due to the thicker material made for smoothing. I liked this short but between this and the Spanx version (which is the most similar), I think I prefer the Spanx option!
Commando Zone Smoothing High Waist Shorts (#2) – this felt the most supportive/shaping. I liked the waist support and how soft the material felt! My only note was that when I walked I would hear it when I would take steps.
Thigh Society The Staple (#3) – if you are looking for a layering short that is *NOT* shapewear aka will not smooth/press/support in a way that feels like shapewear does, this is what you want. It feels like a thicker version of wearing nylons, is super breathable, and stays put. The legs rode up a little bit on me but that is not a deal breaker for me.
Thigh Society The Cooling (#4) – the lightest weight option for a layering short is this one. It’s not going to provide shaping or support, it’s simply a lightweight, thin layer to wear underneath your outfit! This is one of my favorites for sure, especially when the temps rise here in the summer.
Spanx Shorty Seamless Shaper Shorts (#5) – I liked how low-profile these were. I did notice the legs ride up occasionally but that is sort of inevitable with shorts like these. Overall, these are a great staple for a smoothing short!

I’m confused. Does the blog order not match the picture? It would be nice to be able to compare the description with the picture
See the updated #’s on the post. Thanks!
I have an hourglass shape and the Thigh Society shorts are awful on me. The waist rolls down, the legs roll up. My holy grail shapewear is the Maidenform Cover Your Bases Smoothing Shapewear Slip Short. $20 on Amazon! They’re compressing, but extremely comfortable, even for hours of wear!
This is a great resource! Thanks, Kate!
So no fave or depends on the outfit? Would love an overall pick or ranking.
There isn’t one that blew the others out of the water, so not a single winner. Different outfits demand different needs so I thought it would be most helpful to share my experience wearing all of them for you to make your own informed decision!
