The 2 step bun (aka the way I’ve been wearing my hair all summer)
A soft cat eye with eyeshadow tutorial
I’ll save you my usual paragraph about how humid it is here and jump right into the tutorial.
A friend recently asked me for a quick style that is not just a ponytail and can be dressed up and casual and is really fast and easy with almost zero effort.
Well, so she didn’t use those exact words, but I paraphrased.
I started pulling my hair into a low bun because a higher ponytail was giving me headaches as my hair was starting to get a bit long again. And I did this simple little trick that takes about 4 seconds to change the entire bun into something a bit more polished.
Watch the tutorial here:
It’s so simple, right? The wrapping part makes the entire bun look fuller and more proportional, which is always a win in my book. And in case you are curious, these are my favorite bobby pins and these are my favorite clear elastics.
Such a simple hairdo!! SO cute too!!

Can you explain what you did when you put your hair in a pony tail? I can’t see it very well. Did you just not pull it out all the way?
I have same question…it looks like you did something else to it before putting in the elastic.
I had the same question…she basically gathers most of the length of her hair into her hand and wraps the elastic around that, not actually a pony tail. It’s the basis to so many of her tutorials; I just figured it out and am wearing this bun today!
Thanks for this tutorial. Today I really need it!
Hi Kate, I also have a wedding in three weeks. I need hair help! How will you wear your hair on your sister’s wedding day? Will you do a tutorial for us?
I really like this bun. High ponytails are also giving me a headache so i will try this style for sure.
That shirt!! Where is it from?
Loft! I have the same one.
It was on clearance the last time I was at my local Loft 🙂
Love this look. My hair is so straight and slippery…not as thick either. Guess I should curl it a bit first?
What?! Stop! That looks SO easy!! I would have never have thought to take out a section and wrap it. Brilliant!
the best makeup look I’ve seen on you in a while… you always look beautiful, but something about this one is *More*. Love it!… and THOSE EYES! 🙂
I was thinking the same thing…..always beautiful, but something about this one really pops !!! Maybe it’s the blue shirt with the blue eyes, but the all over makeup look is fantastic. #eyelash goals !!!!!
I LOVE your earrings! Where are they from??
I third this! Super cute!
My kind of hairdo!
What blush and eye liner are you wearing?
I’d love to hear your tips for getting texture and volume whether you’re putting your hair up or leaving it down. When my hair is clean (and sometimes day 2) it’s pretty smooth and flat – do you load it up with texture spray?
So how did you get your lashes SO LONG 🙂
I am almost never able to do a nice, even, full looking bun so I have to try this – hopefully I will end up with something that looks like yours, it’s gorgeous!
Can you show, in more detail or maybe in slow motion, the “pull it into a low ponytail” part? I cannot get that skill mastered.
I have long thick hair and I tried this tutorial. I always end up with buns that look to perfect but doing it this way helped make it a little more undone. I had to use 2 hair ties, a couple Bobby pins, and two Goody spin pins to make sure my thick hair was secure. Loved it!
Hey Amanda, I have super thick hair and when I try this it comes out looking really droopy. Where did you put the second hair tie?
Hair looks great but those eyelashes! Is this the result of the eyelash lift? Are you still using fibers and mascara method? Tell me your secrets 🙂
Your makeup is stunning in this photo! What products did you use? Your eyes pop!!! Gorgeous.
This is such a cute look! You did an awesome job!
I’m going straight to Amazon to buy those elastics! I’ve had The Worst time with clear elastics breaking (and my hair isn’t that thick).
Wow I love it! It looks so nice and easy to do, I’ll definitely try it out 🙂

It looks great bit my is really thick and heavy. This would never hair with my hair.
I think this might be my go to hairstyle from now on as I’m in the sweltering Indian heat traveling, and I’m kind of tired of the pony tail and top knot!
Why when I try this does my hair look like a nest and not hold???
I love this bun so much! It looks so beautiful! Also loving your hair colour, really suits you! x
Amazing!! I will definitely do this! I have long hair & every summer I get this thought to cut it all off. I braid it a LOT but I’m always looking for new ways to put it up. If you have more suggestions I would absolutely love to hear some.
You always look so beautiful! I love your makeup look too.
Thanks for the video! I too am a hair headache sufferer. I actually switched my hair accessories and amazingly enough that helped alot! I don’t know if you have heard of Lilla Rose but I started wearing their stuff about 7 months ago and can’t even feel them in. For the bun you demo here, the U Pins would work great. I am an independent stylist for them now and would be happy to send you some to try. Just let me know if I can help another headache sufferer!
Oh my God, where were you when I had long hair and has not haircut yet! I’ll save it for the future!
My buns always end up looking like a loop sticking off the back of my head! Any suggestions???
Hairstyle really bothers me a lot everyday. I can not make it right and now my solution is wearing hair extensions.
I tried Beauty Forever hair extensions and it is really very convenient.
J’adore toutes vos coiffures! Vous m’avez appris à boucler mes cheveux avec un fer à lisser et maintenant j’arrive à donner une forme que j’aime à mes cheveux! Merci!
Super easy !
Your tutorial called the messy bun, changed my life. But now my hair is shorter and I can’t do that bun. Can suggestions on how to do messy bun when hair is just a little below shoulder length. I love all your videos. Thank you.
love it very much
hope it can help you a lot

I’m Elaine from Burlington, Ontario. I am 52 with virgin nuntreated hair that is still brown with natural blonde streaks. I look 40ish thank goodness!
I just found your blog. You are clear and simple when you present. I have never worn buns but instead of cutting my thick wavy hair will try these styles.. thank you! I will send pics especially of my hair at wedding in Scotland in Fall.
I did this to my hair & liked it very much. I took a picture.
The hairstyle is great, but as the thin hair like me, it is impossible to get it, so my solution is wearing hair waeves
like this https://www.hairgets.com/hair-weave-c-2.html
it is easy for me
Love the hairstyle!
So easy and practical
You need to wear blue more often, it really makes your eyes pop. Beautiful hair, thanks for the tip.

Love your look!! So clean and fresh!
Hi Kate! Love all your tutorials … especially now that my hair is longer.
I saw a low bun tutorial where you started with two low pony tails but can’t find it.
Please share the link.
Love your hair styles. You have a sweet personality.
