Balancing a Bold Lip
Laced Half Up

One of the looks that I see a lot on the red carpet is a strong lip with a really simple eye. Oftentimes I’m tempted to match a bold lip with a cat eye, but I think the cat eye can compete with the lip in that case!
Inspired by the latest award show, I thought I’d walk you through the makeup look I did that balanced a strong lip! If you recreate this look, keep in mind the emphasis will be on your smile! I’ve been using Colgate Optic White for almost a full year and it’s the only reason I have a bright white smile!
For eyes, I chose a nude and slightly shimmery shadow, and applied it all over the lid. I chose a slate grey liner that I applied with an angled brush, and then went heavy on the mascara–for both upper and lower lashes. I wanted the mascara to be the statement to the eye.
The rest of my face was kept simple, with a soft contour and just a touch of color on my cheeks.
The lip required a steady hand and a very close mirror! I opted to use a brush and dip it into the lip color because I didn’t have a liner that matched this deep wine shade. The brush gave me control, and I could make sure it wasn’t bleeding out of the edges of my lips!
The final looked showed definition in the eyes, but the lips are certainly the focal point!
Rich wine colored matte shades are very on trend for the fall and winter. And you can also pull from the 90’s and find something with a bit of brown as well!

Colgate Optic White is my favourite! Beautiful look, I think it is key when doing a bold lip to focus on lashes especially if it is for a daytime and you don’t want to go to heavy with eyes or even liner. Long fluttery lashes make a statement all by themselves and your lashes are gorgeous, great post. Thank you for sharing, hope you will visit my blog if you get the chance xxx

a simple eye with a bold lip is one of my favorite looks! makeup artists often do these looks on celebrities for the red carpet. they actually do prefer a simple eye because heavy eye makeup can be so aging.

So pretty! Can you tell me what brand and color is your lipstick? P.s. Loving the bangs!
I would love to know the color and brand of your lipstain too. 🙂
This is a gorgeous look! It’s bold, but not too bold! I’ve started using that toothpaste since you recommended it, and I love it!
What eyeshadow did you use? Love your blog!
Hi Kate! Love your blog 🙂 Can you tell us where you got your necklace? Looks like a great Christmas present!
Thanks!

Great tips – my lipstick would be a mess without my small vanity mirror! Loving bold lips right now!

Love this lip color on you. I have found that black eyeliner is not as flattering on me as dark browns, and I would love to dry some dark/slate grays. I would love to see a post with some high/low suggestions for dark grey eye liners. I think a lot of ladies who find black to be a little too harsh for them would appreciate this.
No matter what brand I buy or how much money I spend on lipstick, it always comes off within 1 hour. I don’t know if I’m licking my lips too much or what! Also, my lipstick frequently bleeds below my lip. Any suggestions?
You would just die if you tried LipSense lipstick! I’ve emailed Kate’s team to try to get her to try it too! It lasts at least 4 hours on everyone!! Check out my youtube channel for a ton of info!

I love that lip color on you. And the bangs……….. Cut and color Friday – trying to play your tape in my head – “it’s only hair and it will grow back”
I’m older than your mother but I LOVE your blog. I’m so happy you are still here with all the joys of motherhood that tug at you. Wife & mother are #1 but I’m so happy the blog is still on the list!
Love this makeup look! You inspired me to try out a bold lip color yesterday, and I felt so comfortable feeling like my makeup was balanced rather than crazy lady. 🙂
P.S. I’ve also been following your tutorial for beach waves and love it! Thanks so much!
What’s the lip color?? SPILL! lol
I really like wine/berry lip shades and this one is really pretty on you! I agree that although it might be tempting to add a cute cat eye it’s better to just keep the focal point on the lips.

I absolutely LOVE this look! Could you please give me a breakdown of the makeup products you used – eye shadows, lipstick & blush. Thank you so much!
Looks beautiful! Definitely going to try that.
