Volumized and Textured Waves with Living Proof ( a tutorial )
Cut from the same cloth
(left: before, right: after!)
No two words are more synonymous with my favorite hairstyles than “volume” and “texture”. And when one of my absolute favorite product lines, Living Proof, reached out with their latest new product launch, Full Dry Volume Blast, you can imagine I was practically levitating in my chair from excitement.
I love volume and texture, and aerosol sprays like this seem to work best in my hair, versus a cream for example, so I could not wait to give this product a try.
In fact, as soon as I was clued in on the release, I bought a travel size product because I couldn’t wait for the full size to show up in the mail.
As you can imagine, it was true love. You can watch and see how I created these waves and the tousled texture with Dry Volume Blast, and make sure you stay until the very end of the video to learn how to recreate the prettiest little twisted half up style!
It’s been a few weeks since I first tried Dry Volume Blast, and it has become an essential product that I use every time I style my hair. It’s perfect on freshly washed hair, and also adds a great texture to day old hair. It isn’t waxy, like you may find some texture sprays to be, and it also smells so nice. It doesn’t leave your hair stiff, like a hairspray would, so your hair is still touchable and manageable. One of the main goals of the products is for it to be “light as air”, and it feels like that on the hair!
A key point that I want to be sure you know is to shake the can before you use it, and while you apply it. That will activate the product, and ensure you get maximum volume and texture!
It solves the problem of hair being too slippery for braids, or your curls blending together into one single curl if your hair is long. It’s truly a game-changer in the texture spray realm, and I can’t recommend it enough.
This delicate twisted half up style tutorial is at the end of the video you’ll find above. It’s pretty on its own, but would also look great as a start to a full updo. You could even stack two twists on top of each other for a different look.
While I love hair products, I’m always looking for ways to keep my routine streamlined. Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast is the perfect multi-tasker that saved me time, and also delivered the exact results I wanted.
If you are new to the line, you can check out all of their products here, or try their product selector tool on the Living Proof website. It will recommend shampoo and conditioners, as well as styling products based on your hair type and what you are going for when you style your hair.
This post was sponsored by Living Proof, though all opinions are my own. If you came to my house, you’d see this product sitting right next to the Living Proof PhD dry shampoo on my bathroom counter-I promise!
Thanks to Jordan Maunder for the beautiful photos, and the Leslie-Alford Mims House for the stunning location!

Just the other day I was thinking to myself “I wish I had a volumizer/ texture spray,” that didn’t leave my hair feeling “gritty and dirty feeling.” If that makes sense. I have a product that does that to my hair and don’t use it at all.
I have bangs like how you do. Do you use this product on your bangs at all?
Thanks for sharing! .
I know this is sponsored so maybe you can’t answer this but how does this compare to amikas texture spray? I love that, maybe the smell more than the function! ?
I’m wondering the same!
I have both, and I am IN LOVE with the Living Proof one. The Amika texture spray does nothing for my hair. But this one does for sure!
So beautiful ❤️
I have a question for you Kate. Do you ever work with short, pixie style hair? I would love to see advice or tutorials for short hair!
Yes! I would love that too! Also curious if the Dry Volume Blast would work with short hair.
Ditto!
LOVE this product!! It is the BEST thing I have ever used on my flat, fine hair!! Don’t overspray and try not to spray scalp/roots. As good on the second day as the first. A game-changer for sure!
I thought you were all about the Amika Texturizing Spray. So do you not use that anymore? Is this better?
I would definitely like to know how you would compare it to Amika as you have often sung it’s praises. Thank you!
I love your hair!! It seriously always looks perfect (watch your videos on youtube.. just got into blogging world). My hair is so fine and limp… but also gets oily easily. Do you think this would work on hair like mine? Also.. an above comment said to be careful to not put on the roots… is that true? Isn’t that where most want volume? I’d love to here your feedback. 🙂
Thanks!!!

I have the same problem with my hair and using Thicker Fuller Hair shampoo makes a dramatic difference by reducing oil and thickening. Shampoo twice then condition your ends only.
I find it in stores by the hair regrowth section or online. Try online first as it can be tricky to find sometimes.
Seriously LOVE the hair, and those lashes WOWSERS!!!
Will this work on a long pixie cut too?
Where is your top from? I love the color and fit!
Old navy
Great tutorial! I love texturizing sprays and this one sounds awesome. They make such a difference in terms of styling and I wish I had found them sooner.

I LOVE this. I wish there was a way you could do a tutorial with the exact same thing, but with someone with short hair. I have a bob that falls between my chin and neck and I can’t, for the life of me, achieve that perfect tousled look. #helpme
Our hair sounds similar, and I use the Living Proof Dry Volume..it’s amazing! It gives me perfect volume and a tousled look…go buy some! 🙂
Your hair looks amazing, like usual! What is the brand curling iron you use in the video?
Hi Kim! It’s a T3 curling iron! You can find it here: http://www.sephora.com/whirl-trio-interchangeable-styling-wand-P388707. Hope that helps!
Do you know the specific size barrel she is using here?
Hi Katelyn! She is using 1 1/4! 🙂 Thanks for following!
Thank you Nicole!
Can you please let me know what curling iron that is????
Hi Anastasia! It’s a T3 curling iron! You can find it here: http://www.sephora.com/whirl-trio-interchangeable-styling-wand-P388707. Hope that helps!
I’m loving this stuff too! And I’m with you, volume AND texture? Sign me up. I haven’t had much luck with the other Living Proof products, for some reason, so I was pleasantly surprised that this product worked for me. I bought the travel size to try it out and quickly went back to purchase the full size, so that I could keep the travel size in my makeup bag for travel use only–so that I never have to be without it!

I actually just got this spray in the mail yesterday, I can’t wait to give it a try!!
Kristina does the Internets
I ordered this from sephora and can’t wait for it to get here! I have big hopes for it so thanks for the tutorial!
How well do you think this would work for someone with short straight hair that is cut in a bob?
How does this one compare to the Amika texture spray?
I don’t know what it is about Living Proof, their products are just magic on my fine, limp hair! Can’t wait to try this product!
Hi Kate! I curl my hair with the same method as you but my ends are SO thin that the bottom of my curls look frizzy and dead when I leave them out of the curling iron (my hair is freshly cut right now and I had my stylist cut the ends blunt). Do you have any trick or special product that would help the ends of my hair?
Thanks!
Hey! I’d recommend trying out Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day Fresh Cut Split End Mender (omg that name is long!), if you haven’t already. I have the same problem and this has helped me a little–maybe it’ll work for you! Or Moroccan Oil on the ends?
Thanks for this review, I’ve been looking forward to it!
I was excited to try this too as I’m also always on a quest for more volume, but my experience was much different. Maybe I did something wrong, but it left my hair stiff and crispy, a feeling I can’t stand. Perhaps I did something wrong? In fact, I hated it so much I returned it … it just came off with almost an Aqua-Net type feel. I have no need to revisit those days!
Living Proof is such an excellent brand! I use their dry shampoo and it’s the best dry shampoo I’ve ever tried!

Love this stuff! If I use it in my roots I find I need to wash my hair the next day though – but I love using it a few inches below my roots to create a little fullness around my face! Thanks for another awesome post Kate! 🙂
I know this is a LP ad, but did you use any type of hairspray on top to hold everything? Thanks!!
Just a light mist of hairspray!
What is that curling iron?
I couldn’t find on YouTube or here what kind of curling iron your using in the video and my tried and true just died on me at the salon and I’m on the hunt!!
You look so pretty in that lavender color!!
Just an FYI for those asking about the curling iron. I recently purchased the T3 with the interchangeable 1.25″ clip barrel. My hair looked great initially, held a curl for about an hour! And I never have problems with my hair holding a curl throughout the day. I tried 3 days and it’s now on its way back. $189…totally totally not worth it. Went back to my $50 Hot Tools!
I love both those brands but I can’t believe your curls fell out with T3! I turn the temp ALL the way down on that iron to get a softer curl, otherwise it’s too tight! Were all the blue lights lit up on the handle? That means it was at the hottest!
All but the top one was lit up. But i don’t turn my hot tools all the way up either. Oh it was hot! That’s for sure! It doesn’t make any sense to me! But that’s just way too much money for it to not work fabulously!!
of course!
What kind of bobby pins do you use?
What kind of bobby pins are you using?
Would you advise say that you don’t need a mousse or some kind of holding product if using this? It will hold curls all day even on freshly washed hair?
Thanks!
I love, love this product. I pretty much have an addiction to it. I tell myself that I am not going to use it everyday but I just can’t stop. That being said this small can last no time for me. I would love to see a bonus can come out with same price point.
Thanks for this tutorial… ☺️ My hair is naturally on the thinner side and lays against my head. I’m enjoying reading your tips for volumizing and seeing you utilize the tools of the trade. Great tips and I’m excited to keep trying different styles!
What curling iron is this (please!)?
HI Kate,
I love watching all your tutorials but mostly enjoy your hair videos. Could you PLEASE do a video from start to finish on how to style your bangs, including your part line. I’ve watched the ones you’ve done but you don’t show how you separate and do your part line. I have thick course hair and I always end up with bangs and a part that looks too defined. I see a lot of women with the straight bangs and flat part. Yours always looks so well blended! Thank you for sharing all your tips!!!
Thanks for re-posting this today on Facebook! I watched it again (even though I definitely watched it when you first posted it) and noticed for the first time just how much texture spray you use in your hair. I think that’s the problem I’m making — I’m always very hesitant to use “too much” but I think that’s why it never really works for me the way it does for you (at least from what I can tell in pictures/on Snapchat).
I love all of your tutorials and just came across this one! Before you started curling your hair in this tutorial, did you blow dry and use Aquage Uplifting Foam like you normally do?
Beautiful curls! I am definitely buying this product! Do you blow dry your hair in the steps with a paddle brush as if you wer wearing it straight before you curl it?
