My go-to soothing and gentle skincare products

Convenience is becoming more and more important to me as I get older and busier. I’ve always enjoyed efficiency, but with two little boys and a full schedule, convenience is inching to the top of my list of Important Things. So, grabbing skincare that is both gentle and effective AND at the drugstore is a win in my book #MadeToMatter.yes to-3
It’s not often that I remember a brand launch, but I remember when the Yes To brand started. I thought it was such a fun concept to see the different fruit and vegetables featured on different products. And the Yes To Cucumbers range was always the most intriguing to me. My skin is dry, sensitive, and occasionally prone to a break out or two. I make a lot of efforts to keep my skincare routine simple, gentle, and effective, so the all Yes To products align with that perfectly. Seeing that some of the Yes to products were nominated for a #CEWInsider award – well, that definitely encouraged me to take a second look at some of the products.
A few of my favorites are the Soothing Body Wash and the Eye Makeup Removing Pads. The Soothing Body Wash smells absolutely delicious and it’s the perfect subtle yet invigorating scent for spring. I love the fresh smell of cucumber! The Eye Makeup Removing Pads are effective at really breaking down heavy eye makeup. I love mascara, and often wear many layers of it, so simply laying one of these pads on my eyes for about a minute helps loosen everything up and allows me to wipe it away without any stinging or irritation. There is also a full makeup removal wipe by the Yes to Cucumbers line, if you are looking for a bit more than just an eye makeup remover pad!

I was even more excited to see that three of the Yes To product line were nominated for a #CEWInsider Beauty Insider Award! (The 2016 CEW Awards are the Beauty Industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, where industry insiders select the best beauty products of the past year!) The Yes to Grapefruit Pore Perfecting Brightening Peel looks intriguing as it helps to even skin tone and reduce the appearance of pores, plus it smells so fresh! Also nominated was the Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask, which helps to detoxify skin. (Charcoal naturally rids skin of nasty impurities and is great for oily skin because it does not over-dry it!)

I’m especially intrigued by the Yes to Cucumbers Cooling Hydrating Mist – I’m sure it will find its way into my cart at some point this summer as the idea of a cucumber scented mist in the dead heat of summer sounds just wonderful. I can see why it was nominated for a #CEWInsider Award!

Like I said, this whole line is easily found at Target and there are a few different ranges depending on your skin type. I’m interested in trying a few products from the Yes to Coconuts range, since my skin has been excessively dry these days! Their natural formulas make these products effective and worth trying – I’m sure I’m not the only one who has stood in the aisle and tried them out!

Have you followed the #CEWInsider Beauty Insider awards? What new beauty and skin care products do you think are the best from the past year? (Share your picks including a Yes To product)

Are you interested in learning more about this fantastic line? I’m hosting the Yes to Twitter party on Monday, 5/16, 7-8 pm EST. Come and learn about this fantastic company and their #CEWInsider Award winning products and you might win a prize!

I love the YesTo line! I have the makeup removing pads and think they work so great. Another YesTo product I love is the YesTo Carrots fragrance free face wash. I love that it’s so good for my skin without the added fragrance, and it’s so creamy.

Love their stuff! The cucumber wipes are always a must-have for me. Especially while traveling! I’m going to pick up some up of their night cream tonight as it’s on sale and on Cartwheel at Target!

I have never seen this line before, I don’t know if they sell them anywhere near me. I really need to look for it now.

I have very sensitive skin so I thought the Yes To Cucumbers line would be perfect for my skin. I tried the makeup removing wipes and they made my face burn and I had huge red patches all over my face for a couple days. Yikes! I will stay away from the Cucumber line but may be willing to try others!

The eye makeup remover pads had the same effect on me! crazy red burning eyes.

Jenn says · 05.09.16

I don’t have sensitive skin at all and the yes to cucumbers wipes did this to me as well. Stung so badly! Opposite of soothing, unfortunately.

Alyssa says · 05.09.16

So strange! I had that experience with their cucumber mask one time, but never with their wipes.

Noel says · 05.09.16

I have no problem using the Yes to Cucumber on my face, but if I try to use it on my eyes it stings pretty bad!

Reply
Michelle says · 05.10.16

Same exact issue! I thought I had to have a bad batch because who would use a wipe that burns like that? I finished a workout at the gym and literally ran to the bathroom to splash cold water on my face after using one of those wipes! The more people I talked to, the more I realised we all had the same issue and I see that is reflected here as well.

As a side note, Kate, I’m really surprised you don’t have skin issues with all of the products you review and try. My face would be an absolute mess if I switched up products as often as you do. You must have really tough skin!

Same! I have sensitive skin and holy balls, those wipes messed it up. My skin was on fire..bright red and burning. It actually brought tears to my eyes.

I have sensitive skin with a bit of rosacea on my cheeks and the Yes to Cucumbers gentle milk cleanser and daily calming moisturizer are holy grail products for me! I can’t use the wipes or other products from the line but these two. Love them!!

Didn’t somebody ask you about the “yes to” products line recently, and your response was basically a “meh” (not the exact word, but was along those lines…).

I realize this post is an ad but the recent comment makes it seem even more disingenuous than a sponsored ad already does…

I completely agree. Seems to me like a lack of discernment and/or integrity.

The Yes To Coconuts Eczema Relief Spray is the ONLY product that works for my husband’s eczema, and he’s tried so many different products! Totally recommend.

This is the problem with sponsored blog content. This post you did on the Yes To products (some of which have the word soothing in their titles) directly follows the post you just did on your go-to soothing skin products. So which products are the ones that are actually soothing your skin? Can’t you see how disingenuous and misleading this looks? This can’t possibly be good for business for anyone involved, because the two-sidedness doesn’t encourage me to use the Yes To products and it doesn’t make me want to use the ones in your previous post with the affiliate links, either. This isn’t the first time I have seen this on these “beauty review” type posts of yours. Just seems like it’s more about the sponsorship than the actual product review that could really be helpful to someone, and it’s a discredit to the integrity of this blog.

Amy says · 05.09.16

You took the words right out of my mouth.

HJM says · 05.09.16

I know the response might be that Kate used just the eye remover pads from the Yes To line, but there are no photos of that particular product, only of the other “soothing” items from that line. Makes me wonder if she really even used them at all, since she is usually really thorough with photos. To me, this seems like a form of false advertising and is very shady.

Jenn says · 05.10.16

Yes, yes and yes. I understand the need to generate income from the blog but there Is a way of doing this while still maintaining your credibility and integrity. Despite the careful wording of this post – she’s still promoting this brand for income, a brand that she has admitted she doesn’t care for.

These sponsored posts have the opposite of the intended effect on me – makes me not want to purchase any recommendations because I don’t know which products Kate actually uses and would recommend verses the ones she’s just making a profit off of.

I must admit that I enjoyed your blog immensely in its beginnings where your focus was more on something that you do extremely well and have a talent for – styling hair. That is what brought me to your blog. Your hair tutorials are done beautifully with easy to follow steps – any hair styling novice can, with a little bit of practice, replicate the desired result. I also enjoyed the outfit posts that you used to do and enjoy your family posts. But over the last two years I feel that you have become a marketing officer for various products. Selling the virtues of and endorsing products that you may not necessarily believe in. No company is going to pay you to write a negative review. They are paying you to write a positive review in order to move product and generate sales. Your reviews are seen as biased and insincere as you are not independent of the manufacturer paying you for them. I understand that you need to earn a living but you have contradicted yourself depending on whether it is a paid product endorsement or not and, for me, that brings into question your honesty and integrity.

Lynn says · 05.09.16

Lots of negative comments here. I too don’t think Kate uses these products, she is more a high-end product user. I enjoy her hair tutorials, makeup tutorials, slices of family life, outfit ideas. But don’t care for “ads” like this one.

I think Kate has been very honest in this review. We know from her previous mentions of this brand that she is not crazy about it. We also can tell that from this review. Kate only mentioned 2 products that she has actually used- the body wash and the eye makeup removing pads. About the wash, she said she loves the smell, and the pads, she said it works if you leave it on your eye for a minute. I don’t see anything wrong with loving the smell of the wash, and I appreciate her honesty about the makeup removing pads–who wants to have to leave it on for a whole minute?!! The rest of the review was simply telling about the product line and other products in it that she has not tried but could be interested in.

Overall, I think she showed much tact in this review. She let us know from the beginning, that it was a sponsored post, and never claims to “love” the product line, or to use it every day, or that they are “must haves”, or anything like that. She simply reviewed some products, and mentioned a couple she enjoyed. Why is that so bad?

I do not know Kate, but have read her blog for several years. I don’t see why you have to come to her blog and criticize. As I was taught long ago, if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.

By posting a positive, albeit heavily revised, review of these products, Kate is endorsing them to her readers. Her followers trust her recommendations and buy products based on them. Kate has previously said she doesn’t care for this brand, so why would she agree to sponsor products she doesn’t like? That calls her reliability into question for me, especially since the post right before this was all about her favorite soothing skin care products – none of which were from Yes To… It would be like Gwyneth Paltrow doing a commercial for Burger King – you know should wouldn’t touch that stuff with a 10-foot pole unless you give her enough money. Sorry Kate, I’ve enjoyed your blog for years, and I know you’re entitled to earn money (I do appreciate that these products at least fall within the purview of your beauty blog), but this seems false to me. I would’ve passed on this one.

Megan says · 05.10.16

editing my above comment to add: I’m not sure Kate changed the original post. I know it got taken down and then re-posted, but at first glance, it seems the same to me.

Reply
HJM says · 05.10.16

There are not photos of the eye makeup remover pads or the body wash. There are photos of the skin care products. She is talking about one product and displaying photos of others. It would be different if she posted photos of the actual products she used. It would be disingenuous, say, if you were watching TV and a commercial for a restaurant came on and the person was eating a cheeseburger in the photos but the person talking was promoting the salads and how great they are and how they have won so many awards.

Just looks like someone with an open hand for money to me, and not someone who actually cares about what their content says. Blogging is a career for many, yes. But if I was dishonest at my job the way Kate is here? I would be let go. This post also makes me think that the Yes To company is not smart with their sponsorships for letting it happen, and I don’t picture myself purchasing their products as a result.

Dear Anne, the blog post was very different when the first comments were posted. The original post was removed from the blog and an updated version reloaded at a later time. And the updated version is the one that you have read and commented on.

Agree with others commenting on the ads. I remember her saying something to the effect she wasn’t too impressed with this line and weeks / months later she’s doing a sponsored post? Will take her product recommendations with a grain of salt as it’s more about the money than actual like/dislike. Not everyone can afford the high end makeup and skin care that is her ‘favorite’.

LA says · 05.10.16

If y’all are actually taking the recommendations of someone you don’t know off of the Internet, then that’s your own fault. If you want good product recommendations, talk to your friends, family, or better yet, a dermatologist. If you don’t personally know Kate, then you have no say in how she runs her blog. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. It’s as simple as that.

Reply
Megan says · 05.10.16

She writes a beauty blog where she profits off of making recommendations to her readers. What’s the point in reading a beauty blog where you can no longer trust the recommendations or inspirations from the writer? If all these faithful readers stop reading Kate’s blog, she’ll stop making money, which I assume she’d like to avoid. She’d probably then stop blogging, which I assume her remaining readers would like to avoid. Helpful, constructive criticism makes people better at their jobs.

Shelly says · 05.10.16

I agree. Kate, I love your blog. I check it every day. But I’ve made many product choices based on your recommendations, and recent practices have made me question if those recommendations are legitimate. As much as I love your tutorials and slice of life posts, I don’t feel comfortable making purchase decisions based on your blog anymore. Your opinions influence your readers-that’s a big responsibility. Please let your readers know what items you actually use on the regular to maintain honesty and increase the trust between you and your readers.

isla says · 05.11.16

I don’t think that Kate would appreciate your comment, LA, seeing as how her income is based solely off of how many people buy the products she recommends and/or click through her RStyle links.
As for the don’t like it don’t read it comment, I’m sorry but that doesn’t fly with me. I have been a loyal follower for years, and I don’t think that there is anything wrong with expressing a legitimate opinion. She has made a living off of her followers, and quite frankly, that gives us the right to speak up when something seems inauthentic. Blogging is a business. She is a business owner, and with that comes the good and the bad. The test of one’s character is how they respond to the bad. She has shown a lack of character in how she has not only handled this situation, but others as well.
I will still check in on her blog because I like it, despite the fact that you are telling readers not to, but I will take everything she says with a grain of salt from now on.

It cracks me up how worked up so many people are getting over this sponsored post. You would think she was posting as a medical doctor giving out faulty medical advice. This is a BEAUTY BLOG PEOPLE, take a deep breath! If you don’t like the content then move on to criticize another blog.

Reply
Sel says · 05.10.16

I don’t think it’s about people deliberately wanting to create mischief and criticise. I have been a reader of her blog for at least three years and, in my view, Kate has branded herself (and therefore her blog) as someone who is a Christian and who lives her life in accordance with the principles and values that Christ taught. And because of this, it logically follows that her readers would assume that she is someone who operates with integrity and honesty. Every single person desires to be treated with honesty and not to be lied to. When you discover that someone is not as honest as they purport or imply to be, people react. It’s not the product that is the issue, it’s her perceived lack of integrity that people are reacting to. She endorsed the product when it was a paid endorsement and criticised it when it wasn’t.

Oh my goodness. Do you people really put that much stock into what someone you’ve more than likely never met thinks about a product? Do your own research. I read blogs for entertainment, a little getaway break in my day, and to expose myself to products I usually wouldn’t think to buy. I don’t take her review as the gospel, more of a “hmm. Interesting.” And go on about my day! On the other hand I make my purchases based on my own research, reviews on the actual website, and recommendations from friends and family.

Also: it would be great to see more women building each other up instead of calling someone out for being “fake” when we’ve ALL been guilty of the same.

Amy says · 05.11.16

She writes a beauty blog and recommends products to her followers. Why wouldn’t people value her reviews and opinions. I think a lot of people actually chose products early on based on what she said but now that it’s clear that she doesn’t really use the products she is shilling and making money off of, no one wants to trust her. It is completely beyond me how the rabid fan-girls can’t understand that logic. It’s not because we want to pick on Kate or tear her down, it’s because she has chosen to represent herself one way and pretends to use products that clearly she doesn’t use or like but tells us she does. No thanks.

Reply
Whitney says · 05.11.16

Because no one is forcing you to buy what she recommends. And if you do, it’s not her fault if the product doesn’t work for you. That is your choice. Accountability for your own actions.

Reply
isla says · 05.11.16

I agree on the accountability part, but she herself has said that she relies on bloggers for recommendations. She just did a post advising people to go by those rather than going by what the actual company says. Is it too much to ask for her to be honest about product recommendations? That is the point here. Personally, I don’t think that is too much to ask.

Reply
Rachele says · 05.12.16

Kate’s FAQ section sets the bar for what products she agrees to promote, and unfortunately in this case, she contradicted herself.

She has tons of loyal followers, and subsequently hears thousands of times a week how beautiful and talented she is, she makes money simply by influencing her readers as she receives compensation and complimentary product. She puts herself out there as a credible source for reviews and tutorials.

It’s a two way street. When you disappoint those people who have faith and respect in what you say, they are going to express themselves. I do not get the impression that those who have shared opinions on this post are trolls or haters…quite the opposite, in fact.

when you call yourself a business owner and make a living based on the actions and participation of other people, those people are going to hold you accountable to what you say and do. That’s just life.

But in general, I am losing my taste for blogs. I feel less marketed to when I read a magazine. It’s sad, but yes, I probably should just stop reading. Since the marketers have started controlling the content, it’s just not fun anymore. The blogs used to be a way to learn to do more with less. Now they are just platforms for people to display their carefully curated lives and sell stuff.

I’ve been a reader since before you were pregnant with David, so I feel like you’re one of my friends…which is probably weird and pathetic, but oh well! I love reading about your boys and my own little guys like watching them on your snapchat 🙂 I also really enjoy your makeup and hair tutorials; I just went back into the archives and did my makeup for church this morning using your tutorial on the Tarte Showstopper palette from last year. Anyway, just wanted you to know your posts always brighten this fellow mama’s day 🙂 Keep up the good work!
