Lips and cheeks combos
BRB
Bold:(clockwise from left) lipstick, lipstick, luminizer, bronzer; Balanced: blush, lipstick; Warm: blush, lipstick, Cool: lipstick, blush
My favorite way to wear color is on my face. (such a strange sentence, I know)
My wardrobe is neutral, my shoes are neutral, my bags are neutral, but I’m not shy about wearing a bright lip color to offset the otherwise monotone nature of my “style”.
There’s a bit of practice that comes with pairing the right blush with the right lipstick, so if you are like me and like to experiment with color within your makeup, let’s have a little convo about matching lips and cheeks.
First of all, I tend to be heavy-handed with my blush. I like the look of bright blush, and, in fact, I read somewhere once that Reese Witherspoon likes the look of noticeable blush so I figured if she does it, I can do it.
The main concept you want to follow when pairing lips and cheeks is to stay within the same end of the color spectrum. If your lipstick falls under the cool end, stick with a cooler blush. Conversely, if you are wearing a warm peachy lipstick, look for a blush that has some warm undertones.
If you are wearing a really bold color, either the classic red or a really bright orangey-red, consider skipping blush altogether and just adding a bit of bronzer and luminizer to your cheeks for definitely but not necessarily color. Let your lips do the talking, if you know what I mean. Both literally and figuratively.
If you want to wear a really bright and poppy blush, keep the lips a little more nude. Perhaps skip color altogether and just go with a sheer gloss!
I’d have to say, I tend to gravitate to the warmer colors within my lipsticks and blushes, but I like to cool things off as fall and winter approach. Perhaps metaphorically?
Do you have a go-to combo you like to wear? Let me hear it!

I have to admit for me it’s the opposite – I love it – monstly – to wear coloured clothes 🙂 Nevertheless I can’t live without my red lipstick and therefore your bold combo is my favourite here!

I am exactly like you, love to make my clothes to be neutral and then to make my face brighter. One of the lipsticks I love is the Rimmel Kate Moss 107, quite a deep red but perfect in Autumn. Love it!

I always stick with coral tones on my face. so, warmish? I second your, color on the face statement. I tend to stick to the neutral, very little (if any) patterns on my clothes. But I’m not afraid to rock a pop of color on my lips!
I’m obsessed with all Tarte blushes! Right now I’m loving wearing Exposed with a pink lip, like Burt’s Bee’s Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom. The nude/peachy cheek and pink lip are a really fun combination.

I need to look into the Burts Bees lip balm!
yes Burts Bees lip balm are my fave i have every flavor. I love wearing them before bed, a workout and before putting on any lip product. I also love the cool colors. I tend to wear cool for my every day look and warm when I am going out.
I love it! It’s the perfect rosy pink!
Check out @kateydenno on Instagram. She’s a celebrity makeup artist who uses a lot of Burt’s Bees lip products and the looks are always so gorgeous!
Beautiful color combinations! I tend to love peachy colors so one of my favorite combinations is MAC supreme sheen lipstick in Fashion City and MAC blush in Style.
I love this! I’m with you and tend to go for the warm colors. Love the pairings!

That Hourglass blush is gorgeous! I have been loving a Mirenesse baked blush that I picked up and pairing it with a pink NYX lip butter. 🙂

I’m all about the cool or the bold combos! I think that is what works best! http://meowemily.blogspot.com/2015/09/the-perfect-matte-lip.html
I like a pretty bold lip with a warm blush…so my go-to is Julep Peach Bellini blush (with a little pink blush blended underneath) and Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick in Cherries in the Snow.
I love doing a peachy blush with clear gloss. But I agree about cooling things off a bit for fall and winter. Great tips!
Great tips, very helpful. I didn’t know the rules of wearing bold cheeks vs bold lips. I wear glasses so that throws a wrench into the equation.
I also wear blush like I mean it! The color has to show a bit or my face seems too pale and plain. But I always wear the exact same thing (for years) – Nars Orgasm. I use the three-in-one cream stick because I am a hopeless bathroom klutz and was always smashing and wasting half the powder blush compact. I like the idea of coordinating blush with a lip color and will have to give it a try and step out of my Orgasm rut (sounds like a nice rut to be in!).
It is so funny that you posted this because just yesterday I was trying to figure out a new blush/lipstick combo myself. Love your suggestions and the other readers input. By the way – the new combo I came up with is Hourglass Mood Exposure and UD Naked lipstick.
Is the ambient lighting blush color you tagged (radiant magenta) the only color you would use for cool? I also really liked cool peach and cool pink.
For the cool color you tagged the radiant magenta blush– do any of the other colors of that same blush count as cool too? Like the cool pink??
All Too Faced La Creme lip creams are on sale 50% off today only at ulta.com! I thought I would share.
Wow, this is interesting! It has never even occurred to me to change my blush. I have two blushes, very similar in color, and (if I wear them) I wear one or the other no matter how I change the rest of my makeup. I’ll have to take a good look at what colors I’m mixing in the future!
I don’t switch it up on the blush side (same one every day…). I notice that I tend to be more heavy handed with my blush on darker lip days, though, because I feel I look ghostly otherwise.
