A Fall Makeup Tutorial
I thought about calling this a Pumpkin Spice Makeup Tutorial just because everything Pumpkin Spice is a big deal right now and since I was channeling my inner Autumn spirit I thought it was apropos.
But then I remembered that I don’t like Pumpkin Spice anything so. . . it didn’t make sense. I feel like I need to be in a support group named “Those Who Do Not Love Pumpkin Spice Anything” so I don’t feel so alone in the world. Maybe I’ll get that started. Let me know if you need an invite. We’ll focus on Chocolate everything instead.
Anyway, I created a simple bronze-y fall look for you to try as we approach this upcoming season of dreamy weather and crispy fall leaves. I wanted a lot of warmth in both the shadow and the face! And my lips were a plum shade that I reserve for the cooler months!
Naked 2 Palette(tease), Tarte Exposed blush, Mac Lipstick in Syrup, Hourglass Arch brow pencil in Platinum Blonde, POND’S Dry Skin Cream, Maskcara IIID foundation, Benefit Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in No Pressure, Urban Decay Secret Service, Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen
I began with the POND’S Dry Skin Cream. This is super hydrating, making it very effective as dryer air moves in to the south. I’m so happy to be getting away from humidity, but the dryness around my nose is obnoxious in the wintertime! A creative way to use the POND’S Dry Skin Cream is to only put in in places that you need extra hydration. If you have an oily t-zone but dryness in other areas, use the POND’S Dry Skin Cream in the areas you need it, and a lighter moisturizer on the oily areas! Don’t be afraid to tailor your products to certain areas of your face based on need!
Next I applied Benefit’s Creaseless Cream Eyeshadow in No Pressure all over the lid.
I added Secret Service, from Urban Decay, to the crease.
I didn’t want too much liner since the shadow was darker than usual, so the Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen was perfect for a bronze definition along my upper lash line.
I added a few swipes of mascara on top, and held off on the bottom lashes for the time being.
I used the contour shade from Maskcara’s IIID foundation palette around the outer part of my face, and used the lighter shade for the center. I have a tutorial for how I use this foundation coming VERY soon!!
Because my under eye circles are so dark, I need to top off the foundation with a touch of concealer.
A strong brow was another part of this look, and I used the perfect shade of Platinum Blonde by Hourglass.
To add a touch of depth on my lower lashline, I piked up Tease from the Naked 2 Palette with a pointed brush and swept back and forth.
And here is the final look! Warm, glowy, and perfect for 60 degrees and sunny!
Do you warm up your makeup a bit for the fall? And do you change your moisturizer as well? I always have needed something a little heavier on certain areas, and POND’S Dry Skin Cream is perfect for that!
this post was created as a part of my ambassador program with POND’S, a brand I’ve loved and used for years!
Will you please share the shade of nail polish. I love it for fall!
I would like to know too!
Agreed! Polish color please 🙂
Her nail polish is “my nightly craving” by gelish 🙂
I was thinking the same! Love that shade!
She talked about this nail polish in a previous post. (OPI I Sau Paulo Over There)
I’m thinking this is probably the color she has on.
She recently shared an Instagram post about her love of purple. I bet it’s Gelish nail polish in my nightly craving. It’s a beautiful shade.
I was going to ask the same thing!! I want that nail color!!
Do you think you can use maskara foundation if you are extremely oily? I tried a different cream contour by Laura mercier and it was so greasy on me.
I’m one of those people that’s dry in the morning and gets oily throughout the day. I’ve actually found that having some extra moisture helps it go on better, and I use a BB or CC cream before I put it on. I haven’t had any issues with it sliding off, though I do know she recommends a primer for oily skin.
Regardless, I’m LOVING the IIID foundation.

lovely tutorial! Perfect for autumn! I would also love to know the shade of your nail polish! X
Lovely shades for fall ! I feel overwhelmed by choices when I look for new products, your posts are very helpful.
I will join your non-pumpkin spice support group! Also, lovely tutorial. Thanks for sharing!
Not a fan of pumpkin spice !!! Chocolate/Caramel will win every time !
Lovin’ this warm look!!
And I’ll join the Anti Pumpkin Spice Club too!! And the cinnamon-coated broom things that are everywhere this time of year? Just. No. The closest our home will ever smell to “Fall” is vanilla-something.
I would love to join your non-loving pumpkin spice support group! I love the warming spices this kind of year, but the pumpkin just isn’t for me.
I’m looking for a new moisturizer. I was thinking about the fresh lotus one but do you think it’s heavy enough for the harsher winter months ahead or should I try something like the ponds? My skin is on the more dry/sensitive side and rough Ohio winters definitely do a number on it.
I did your survey a couple of days ago and didn’t have any requests at the time, but after thinking on it a bit more I was wondering if you’ve ever done a post on home remedies for skin/hair. I’ve read so much about coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, etc and I was just wondering your take on it. Have you ever tried anything like that and if so, what was your experience?
I cannot wait for your Maskcara Foundation review! I’m dancing around the idea of buying it. It looks great on you!!!
I am really excited about the review/tutorial as well! I have almost bought it several times but I just haven’t brought myself to do it yet. I have a feeling this will make be finally check it out.
I’m sorry to jump in here so much, but I just bought the IIID foundation last week after dancing around the idea for months and I’m so glad I finally did. It’s so easy to do (even though it’s intimidating when you first put that contour on) and I seriously feel like I’m walking around in amazing lighting all day.
I’m not into Pumpkin Spice either! I really like this look, and I’m looking forward to your tutorial for Maskcara’s foundation! I’ve been toying with trying it out but have been a bit worried that it might be more difficult to apply than my normal quick routine!
Another person here for the “Those Who Do Not Love Pumpkin Spice Anything” Support Group! Why can’t chocolate pie be the Thanksgiving pie, right?! Anyway, love the tutorial and I too am looking forward to your Maskcara foundation review!
YES!! This is my RSVP to the club. I don’t like anything pumpkin except maybe a candle. I just can’t get into it. Love this look!
Lovely look. I do need something a tad more covering on my face, however. Also, I was surprised to see no eyelid primer? I thought you used UD. I am pretty sure you are the one that got me using that 😉 And boy does it work well…from 5am, through 8 hours of work, and then several hours of sitting at tennis, or softball, or football, or….well, you get my drift!! What about a face primer? I use Smashbox. Do you find your makeup stays on just as well without it?
If you use a cream shadow, it acts like a primer. 🙂
I do. I use Benefit Creaseless. However it doesn’t stay all day unless I use my UD primer.
I just knew the other day when you mentioned something about a new foundation that it was going to be this one. It looks absolutely amazing on you. I have been wanting to try it but was going to wait until my birthday in November to order. My skin is fair like yours so this just makes me want it even more. Can’t wait for the tutorial and see what colors you have in your mascara palette.
Love the look! I use the Ponds Dry Skin Cream at night. It really helps in the harsh, dry winter months.
I dislike pumpkin spice as well! Put me on that roster! Chocolate will do just fine!
I love it! Probably because those are the colors I wear year-round. I love that coppery bronzey liner and must hop over to Target to check it out.
Thanks for the reminder about my love of Urban Decay cream shadows. I need to go pull those out.
I am in roars laughing because I do not enjoy the pumpkin craze! I actually love when the pumpkin baked goods fill the shelves because I am not tempted. Brownies. Cookies. Bagels. They are my weakness.
Love the makeup look. Could you please share the concealer you used? I struggle with finding a fair toned creamy concealer that does not cause my eye makeup to smudge.
Have a great day!
Beautiful! Love that nail color as well:) 🙂
Pumpkin Spice makeup, HA! But seriously, today is all fall fall fall and my pinterest is all pumpkin pumpkin pumpkin! Great tips on warming up your look for the fall. I can already see my summer glow fading (is that possible when it’s still 97 degrees in Dallas?) and this is a fantastic way to keep that glow through the cooler months (if it ever gets cool here. I’m starting to doubt it.)
When I was younger I used Pond’s all the time. But for some reason that brand is not for sale in The Netherlands anymore. I’d have to buy Pond’s Dry Skin Cream online if I wanted to try it.
Love the fall make up!
I love the look of dark warm shadows on you! This very much reminds me of the makeover Maskcara did on you a while back. You look stunning, and very fall!
Love the written tutorial! Easier for me to follow along than a video. Love this look!
Don’t feel alone – I don’t like pumpkin spice anything, either. We can be in the group together. Looking forward to seeing your post on Maskcara’s foundation.
Love this fall look! I have a random question on mascara. Every time shortly after I have applied mascara and have curled my lashes, they would go back to being straight like I have not curled them at all. Do you know what I should do with this issue? Should I use a lighter-weight mascara (if it exists)?
I would suggest curling your lashes first and then applying mascara. If your lashes are still giving you trouble heat your lash curler with a short blast of heat from your hair dyer. test the heat on your wrist first (it gets hot fast) then put it up to your face and curl your lashes with a warm curler then apply mascara to seal the curl in .
Search YouTube for “curl eyelashes with a hair dryer”! After trying it twice, I threw my eyelash curler in the trash & will never go back!
I have this problem as well & it drives me CRAZY. I give them extra help by tilting the curler up. Then, ideally, I wait 10 minutes & curl them again….then put on Buxom Lash Mascara. It’s the most lightweight one I’ve ever tried & seems to hold the volume & curl the best. Everything else feels heavy & weighs them down.
You are so not alone in the anti-pumpkin spice thing. I’m just really not into it!
I’m so excited to see your IIID foundation tutorial, especially since I think we have similar skin tones. As you’ve probably noticed from all of my side comments above, I just bought it last week and am madly in love. It’s sooo good!
Such a pretty look! I’m fair like you and also have new(ish) mama under eye darkness, and I was wondering if the concealer you used here was the Makeup Forever one or something else? It seems really effective and I could use something good to cover the circles from early morning wake ups!
Girl, before I even read the rest of this awesome post, I have to say PLEASE sign me up for the chocolate club, because I am pretty grossed out by most things pumpkin scented or flavored. Hooray that it’s not just me!
Thanks for the tutorial! Your hair looks awesome! could you do a tutorial on that look!
holla! Just say no to pumpkin and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING!
I want an invite to the club as well. Pumpkin spice–ew.
I recently bought IIID Foundation and so far I love it but I can’t wait for your tutorial on it. I would also love to know what concealer you used. I have very dark circles under my eyes and need something in addition to what’s in the IIID palette to cover them up. Great look!
What blush did you use on your cheeks??
This is a beautiful look for you! I must say I think the make-up tutorials are easier to follow when it’s a video. Regardless, it is still helpful and I’m excited to try some of these tips!
I’m with you on the pumpkin – blech! Chocolate FTW.
One, I dig your shirt.
Two, cracking up about the pumpkin spice thing. I DO like my Starbucks PSL, but the trend has gone too far. I saw pumpkin spice Twinkies last week (?!?) But my favorite laugh so far is when someone posted this sign from the side of a Mexican restaurant: “Pumpkin Spice Tacos are here. Just Kidding! Drink Tequila!”
Hi Kate, Love the tutorial. Although, I am addicted to pumpkin everything. My grandparents raised me and pumpkin pie was a big deal in our household. Sniff, Sniff, Miss that! Means something different to me though. 😉 I must know where you acquired your shirt. LOVING IT!
Love your tutorials as always!! Your sense of humor cracks me up. I am also not a huge fan of pumpkin spice. I never understood the need for pumpkin spice coffee, I will stick with my caramel and mocha flavored everything. I also would love to know what color nail polish you are wearing, it is gorgeous. Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thank You for all you do.
This look is so lovely! I can’t wait to see that foundation tutorial because I really love the effect it had on the overall look.
I’ve been using IIID Foundation for months now and am fairly certain that I’ll never use anything else! It’s so easy once you get used to it, Cara’s tutorials are easy to follow, and it really is like walking around with perfect lighting all day! Am super stoked to see your review.
Love this look! And I don’t like pumpkin spice stuff either!
I am anti pumpkin spice anything as well. I would happily join your support group. People get mean when they find out you don’t like falls favorite flavor!
Which concealer did you use? I wish you had filmed a video of this! I LOVE IT!
I love this, you look great! I could never go without the Naked palettes during fall!!
And you are still so gorgeous!! I love this. Thank you for sharing.
Love your hair color! What colors do you use? Or should I say what do I tell my stylist? 🙂
So beautiful as always! And I need an invite to the anti-PSL group ?
I love this makeup look!
I would join that support group! I love a good piece of pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread, but other than that, it’s not for me – I just don’t get the craze! Chocolate all the way!
Also, lovely tutorial! I’ve been curious about the Maskcara foundation, I’ll have to bite the bullet someday and give it a try.
WOW -WEEE !!! you have never looked so glowy and beautiful Kate !
Love this makeup and hair combo you did here . I say its a keeper 🙂
So pretty!! I recently got the IIID Foundation and have trouble with it not lasting long 🙁 I use Porefessional primer and a powder on top (not a fan of a super shiny face) but it still seems to “fall off” a few hours later 🙁
On another note! Add me to the chocolate group! Even with working at Starbucks, I couldn’t ever stand the PSL. Chocolate lovers unite!!
Ugh I have the SAME problem! I am a huge fan of Maskcara and want to love the makeup. I do LOVE the HAC brush and the blush. The cream blush stays on well for some reason. I also use the highlighting color as a concealer , then put my foundation and powder on over that. If I use the whole palette, it melts off my face.
For budget purposes what would you suggest to use as a foundation? I’m asking for the Maskacara for Christmas.
Thank you for your help,
I think this is one of my favorite make-up looks you’ve done. So lovely!
I’ve never had the famous PSL, because just the thought of it makes me gag a little, so I’d definitely join your group. Chocolate everything, for sure!
Dying dying dying to try Maskcara’s IIID foundation palette!!! Ugh i’ve been dreaming about it!! I will have to pick one up and review it once I do! Thanks for the post, you look great 🙂
Your hair is getting so long! I love it!
I’ve noticed lately that you jump around your face when applying make up. Do you have tips or previous posts about the order of applying make up? Do you think it makes a difference? I’ve always gone foundation, blush, finishing powder, eyes, then lips. I’d love to hear your opinion or thoughts!
I actually had someone at Sephora change my makeup life! She told me to apply eye makeup FIRST! I was like, really, no way! BUT I won’t ever go back. I always have eye shadow fall onto my face and it’s hard to clean up. But if you apply it first, you can use makeup remover without taking any of your foundation or anything else on your face. Someone also told me to apply concealer last, yes AFTER foundation. That way it doesn’t come off when you blend in your foundation etc. Good luck!
I am absolutely LOVING this look!! I like in Florida so I haven’t given too much thought about warming up my makeup just yet, but I am going to definitely try this look out. (It is still 90 degrees here today.)
Also, sign me up for the anti-pumpkin spice help group. I hate it. All chocolate sounds perfectly fine to me 🙂
I love that shirt!
I managed to fix my hair and put on a little make up Thursday before I ran errands with my youngest and I really felt much better all day! Thank you for the inspiring me to set aside some time for myself each morning.
But then I was rocking a messy bun and yoga pants this weekend making Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls with Maple Cream Cheese Frosting! I just had to get them up in time for the first day of fall!
Your note about pumpkin spice had me cracking up. Check out this link. I saw this on Facebook the other day with the note, “Don’t you think they’ve carried the pumpkin spice thing a bit too far?” Obviously, it’s a joke, but so true! I made a quick run to Target the other day and saw pumpkin spice coffee, bagels, English muffins, air freshener, cereal, lip balm, and coffee creamer!
I HATE pumpkin too! I like the way the smell, but I just can’t do pumpkin flavored anything. At Starbucks I go for a Caramel Apple Spice instead.
Looks so gorgeous on you! I purchased the IIID foundation and it just doesn’t work for me and I am trying to figure out why! Her makeovers are always exceptional! It’s pretty dry and cakey on me and the color just seems so off I feel like I am trying to wear those little packs of Halloween makeup that come out this time of year. I am hoping I am just doing it wrong or maybe I picked the wrong colors ( followed her guide online)? I was so disappointed the two times I tried it that I put it away and have been too nervous to research and try again because I kind of just want to blame it on me not knowing and not on the product, because she is just so awesome, love her.
Love the makeup, love the nail color, love the hair, love everything! You look like a 60s bombshell. Gorgeous!
Your shirt brings out your beautiful eyes. What brand is the shirt? Love it!
I love this look! I don’t have the same products, but I think I have some similar that I could try this. Super cute!
That looks so good! Would love to know how to use the bronzer, contouring, etc. better. You look skinnier when you use it as well (and you’re already tiny looking!). Would love to see a tutorial. The tan look is impressive.
I look this look! Very pretty. I would love an invite to your anti pumpkin spice group. I don’t like the flavor at all and even worse, when I tried it, I broke out in hives. So no pumpkin spice here. Chocolate is good. 🙂
I love this look, Kate! I’m definitely warming things up when it comes to my makeup this fall.
Kristi | Be Loverly
BEAUTIFUL look! Wonderful colors for the transition time before “true” fall. 🙂 Quick question, are all of the brushes you used in this post from Sonia Kashuk? Thank you!
GURRRRLLL!! You look amazing!!!!
Such a natural look! Love it
xoxo, Andrea from The Luster Edition
Kate, have you tried any of the First Aid Beauty products? I get major dry skin on and around my nose (all over really, but those are the worst places) and they have a thick moisturizer that I use everyday called Ultra Repair Cream and an even thicker one that I use on my nose area called Ultra Repair Concentrate that works wonders. You can use both of them anywhere on your body, but also safe for the face. I especially like to use on my feet (different jar for my face of course!)
I have and love that brand!
I absolutely love this look! What color Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen did you use? Copper glow? Bronzebeam? i looked at the pens online and am trying to decide which shade you used, it looks gorgeous!
I was also wondering what color of Pixi eyeliner you used!
Such a BEAUTIFUL fall look. I love the warm colors. Where is that two-sided brush from?

Add me to the list of the Non-Pumpkin Spice Anything! I am glad you posted this because reading the comments made me feel better- I swore I am the only person in Southern California that doesn’t have a Pumpkin Spice Late walking around Newport Beach! Love this tutorial! 🙂
This look is so pretty!! You look gorgeous!
I would join your support group. i don’t like anything pumpkin. Love the look!
Sign me up for the support group. I don’t like spice anything: cake, cider, apple pie, tea, candles.
Also love’n the nail polish and makeup.
I will def join your no pumpkin anything club!! Lol. Love all of your tutorials!!
How do you keep mascara on your bottom lashes from smearing? My under eye gets oily and no matter what I do it always gives me black eye look 🙁
Wow, what a great tutorial and fall make-up look! I love it! Also your nail polish color is very pretty as well. Although I do like some things Pumpkin Spice, I am all for Chocolate EVERYTHING! Lol Great post, thanks for sharing and your beautiful as always. 🙂
Which lip color did you use? I didn’t see it listed and the pictures show two separate products.
Her Heartland Soul
Love how natural and healthy this make-up looks on you, beautiful! The Pond’s Dry Skin cream sounds so perfect for moisturizing problem areas too, thanks for sharing!
You’ve officially lost all credibility with me. Can’t believe you’re against the pumpkin. Is it because it’s orange? I know how you feel about bright colors…
Just give me the next two and a half months to indulge in all that is pumpkin, and I won’t want to see it again for a year.
That’s the beauty of pumpkin season. All of us maniacs burn out on it relatively quickly.
Would so Appreciate you answering more of your followers’ questions…
I love the studs! They are super cute!
Those studs! ?
I love to switch up my makeup and haircolor for fall. And I’m so happy I’m not the only one who doesn’t love pumpkin spice! I’ll join your club!
I love those hoops!!
I love the Studs from Saressa Designs. Rachel is brilliant! and am a recent user of Ponds. I should have started using it sooner!
Please tell us which polish you’re wearing here! You’ve mentioned so many great purple polishes lately but I can’t tell which one this is & this one is gorgeous!
I love your soft waves and I just watched the tutorial to create that look. My question is: do you use the same technique now that your hair is longer or is there a different technique for longer hair?
Not a pumpkin spice girl either. From the comments it looks like there’s a contingency of us. ?
Wow! I love your look. Have you ever tried fake lashes?
Very pretty, but your makeup looks always looks exactly the same with MAYBE a slight variation in colors. Nothing looks different!
Love this. You look so pretty! And, I am SO excited to hear that you’ll be doing a post about Mascara’s IIID foundation. So looking forward to that!
Do any of y’all know dupes for the Benefit cream eyeshadow and UD secret service?!
Sincerely, college student who can’t afford those brands 😉
Kate posted some time ago about Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in the Not Just Nudes pallet. I tried it and really like it!!
Beautiful! Love the pixi beauty eyeliners!
I recently came upon an app called thinkdirty. It gives you a rating according to carcinogenicity/toxicity/immunotoxicities/allergens, etc. Ive been trying to find some good moisutrizing cream (my face is dry because we live in the desert!) and havent been able to. Also, one that doesnt have questionable ingredients. Ponds rates high on this app for toxicity, allergens and everything else that isnt great for skin. Just wanted to let you know!
The only item you didn’t list was what concealer you used! Recommendation please
Love this look – and the IIUD foundation looks amazing on you! Now I want to try it, but I’m wondering how that would work with my 10 month old. Then I remembered you have TWO babies now – I don’t know how you do it!!
PS I like pumpkin spice, so I guess I’m not in the club. Boo.
I am new your blog but am loving the looks and tips from you and all your followers. I was also wondering about the color of the Pixi Endless Silky Eye Pen – I am guessing it was the bronze beam, but wasn’t sure because the cooper one seems similar. Thanks for your posts!
How do I join this anti-pumpkin spice group?! Seriously was feeling like the only one who isn’t into that. Glad to know there are more of us haha! XO
I keep coming back to this tutorial because it’s one of my favorite make up looks you’ve done! So lovely 🙂
