BIRCH

There is no day brightener quite like finding my Birchbox in my mailbox.

Despite my deep, internal longing for Fall, Birchbox reminded me that it’s still summer after all.

I’m always thrilled to find Amika products in my Birchbox. In fact, if my entire box was filled with Amika products that would be a dream come true. I love the Amika deep conditioner. LOVE it.

Dr. Jart is a brand that I also discovered through Birchbox, and I’ve loved being able to try their products.

I’m dealing with a bit of usual breaking out during this pregnancy, and I’m looking forward to trying that Vasanti Detox Cleanser. It’s derived from shea butter so I imagine it will be soothing and soft.

Lastly, I cannot seem to find an eyeliner that I like other than the black one from the Cynthia Rowley collection. I’m already worried they will discontinue it (because doesn’t that always happen to products you love? I’m looking at you DIOR) so I’ll see how this Noir liner works out for me.

Do you subscribe to Birchbox? It’s only $10/mo. In the past I’ve been subscribed to Ipsy, Julep and Glam box, but none compare to Birchbox for me. It’s the best value, and contains a great mix of familiar and new products.

Wait. You’re pregnant again!? I’ve been away from the blog too long. Congrats!!!!

Did you get rid of your Julep subscription? Why?

She mentioned in a video that she was getting a lot of colors she wouldn’t use.

I also look forward to Birchbox every month. There for a while the boxes were kind of ho hum but the last few months they have been totally awesome! I am so glad I hung in there and didn’t cancel my subscription. I also have $110.00 worth of points to spend but can’t decide what I want to get!!

I would totally go with a something huge like a Clarisonic if you can get it for free!

Reply
Michelle Joelle says · 08.19.14

Seconded. It’s so good for your skin!

I’m the worst at saving up my points. I tend to use them once they hit the $20 or $30 mark. But I totally agree if you have that much to get a Clarisonic (assuming you don’t own one already). I have the Mia 2 and love it. If you have one, you could get a nice deep conditioner, some brushes for your Clarisonic (those little things add up!), and maybe some new makeup?

I received that exact box! The amika dry shampoo is my favorite dry shampoo I’ve tried so far and smells amazing like all their products do. The cleanser is really nice as well.

I didn’t realize that Birchbox was so affordable! Good to know, thanks!

Reply
Holly says · 09.02.14

not trying to be a commercial for them (I swear I don’t work for them – I”m a professor), but your box is only $10, if you are going month-to-month. Then as long as you write a review for each product, you get 10 points per review (on average you will get 5 products in your box, so your box costs $5). Totally worth it. It’s my little gift to myself every month. Even in grad school I carved out $10 in my budget for it.

I got the Vasanti detox cleanser in my box too. It is a really nice texture and my face feels really clean and smooth after using it. I think you’ll love it!

When you open up the mailbox and it’s in there, do you squeal a little bit? Cause I squeal, and I’d like to be able to assure my neighbors that it’s standard procedure.

Reply
Kate says · 08.19.14

Yes. There could be a $10k check in there but I’d toss it aside and grab my Birchbox first!

Jen says · 08.19.14

I’m always afraid that if I subscribe to Birchbox, which, yes, is only $10 a month and very affordable… that it will be like a gateway drug for me to drive myself to Ulta and spend an obscene amount of money 🙂

I concur about the Cynthia Rowley eyeliner! Best eyeliner I’ve ever used!

I have been afraid to try my sample because kohl liners tend to smudge pretty badly on me even when I use my eye primer. Do you have that problem with it? I have one sitting in my Birchbox sample tub and I know the color payoff is fantastic but I’m afraid I’ll have a weird black rim on my eyelid.

I may need to try Birchbox! I love hearing your reviews on the products. And I have recently found an eyeliner that I love! Mary Kay® Gel Eyeliner With Expandable Brush Applicator. It goes on like a soft pencil but has the look of liquid! And I think it may last me 5 years! ha!

Hey, I didn’t get those in my box! I love my Birchbox, but I wish they would cut down on the packaging. I do have some guilt opening it. But not enough to cancel my membership.

I wonder if Birchbox is in Canada too! Or if not, what the equivalent would be? Super nice products.

Kate this is the first time we have matching Birchboxes! I absolutely love August’s box. It reminded me why I like Birchbox better than other subscription boxes. High-end products and good variety. Enjoy yours! 🙂

Kate, have you tried Smashbox kohl liners? They go on so smooth and last ALL day. I have pretty oily eyelids, so that’s a huge bonus in my book.

Mallory Glenn says · 08.19.14

The eye liner stays put ALL day! And glides on like a dream! So user friendly!

I know you don’t typically use drugstore cosmetics, but the Cover Girl Ink It eyeliner is great!

I got that dry shampoo and body cream this month too. I get TONS of dry shampoos in my Birchbox- I’d love to get more eyeliner and actual make up, rather than so many bb creams and shampoos!

I LOVE getting my Birchbox in the mail each month! I have mine delivered to work, so I can share the awesomeness with the other ladies I work with! Some how, I just don’t think my husband would get as excited about a box containing shampoo, makeup and perfume samples! Some months are definitely better than others, but I have definitely found a few really great products through some of the samples I’ve received!

This box looks great! I’ve been wanting to try the Amika dry shampoo and Vasanti wash. I really didn’t like my box at all this month and that’s the first time in 9 months that’s happened. Every other month I’ve been really pleased.

Elizabeth says · 08.19.14

I went with the Everygirl box this month because there were a couple of products in there before that I knew I loved. But, your box is fabulous. I love Vasanti and Amika so right there the box would have been a winner for me.

My only similar items with your box was the facial cleanser and the eyeliner (which I am excited to try!). I also received a Supergoop hand cream, ModelCo bronzer, and Nexxus Color Assure wash primer, shampoo and conditioner.

Oh my gosh I love the Cynthia Rowley eyeliner too. It is the best and yes I’ve considered stocking up on birchbox out of fear they will discontinue it or it will be sold out indefinitely. Love it!

I stopped subscribing to Birchbox after 3 or 4 unimpressive boxes, but your posts make me seriously consider trying them again. I bought some Ulta brand eyeliner earlier this year when they were SUPER cheap and I really like them.

I love my Birchbox but wish there was a way to not get perfume samples. With this pregnancy I can’t even wear my normal perfume and can’t enjoy the samples when they come. Even when I am not preggers I am not a big perfume person.

Have you checked your preferences since you first signed up? I was tired of getting nail polish, and when I checked my profile, I realized I’d checked polish as something I can’t get enough of or something like that. While technically true, there’s no way I can rock the metallic green polish or glitter nail art type stuff I was getting in my office.

Amika’s Dry Shampoo is the best one I’ve ever tried and I’ve tried tons. It’s literally changed my life which is a little sad but it’s very true. Enjoy your new goodies!

Kate you should try Maybelline master drama in the color midnight master which is just black. It is awesome! It sets to a completely waterproof state. I discovered it through Emily on beauty broadcast. She prefers is over most high end liners and now I agree with her. It’s awesome! And a lot of people must love it because the first time I bought I had to go to walmart and 2 walgreens before I found it because it was outta stock. Give it a try!

I LOVE Birchbox! It has shown me so many new products. And they truly do tailor the boxes to your likes and needs. My August box was 100% different than yours!

Be careful with the shea butter. It’s really moisturizing but shea can make you breakout more if you are already prone to it.

Lindsey says · 08.20.14

I know you got rid of Julep, but their gel liner that they came out with last month is absolutely incredible. It goes on so easily and has awesome staying power. Definitely worth checking out in my opinion. I got it in my box and ended up ordering a second color because I loved it so much!

Whoa your box is amazing! I’m so jealous of everyone that got the Amika dry shampoo in this month’s box, I love trying dry shampoos out. Speaking of, can you pleaseeeee do a post/video about the proper way to use it? I swear I follow all the articles I’ve read to a T but it doesn’t seem to do *that* much on my fine, long hair.

I have been trying eyeliner after eyeliner since my previous favorite was discontinued, and my new favorite find, is shockingly from Target. I was skeptical after loving department store brands, but I tried the kSonia Kashuk® Twist Up Longwear Liner after reading some reviews, and I’m hooked. I love that it’s both twist up and has an attached sharpener, and the colors are fabulous- I’ve tried a great dark, dark grey, the black and my go to dark dark brown. They last me all day and this is in SUMMER, melt-me California summer, thank you. And it’s only $8 letting me splurge elsewhere. I highly recommend. I’ve gotten tons of compliments while wearing it on how great my eyes look!

Audrey says · 08.21.14

Hey Kate!
I also LOVE the Cynthia Rowley eyeliner! Probably a stupid question, but are they able to be sharpened? Or do you only get what you see?

I’ve been wondering whether to buy a birchbox for a long time – I’ve never been sure it they are actually worth the money, but it sounds as though you do get good products from some great brands. I think i might have to treat myself. I bet it’s exciting whenever you get one through the post!

I am 57 years I receive my birch box every month and I start to look for it, as soon as the month changes even though I know it won’t be here until after the 15th of every month being old I still love beauty products. I am the best looking woman at the doctors office every month, whether any one else agrees or not. Lol I never followed a blogger before. But I thought may be u young chicks could learn a thing or too from an old bird like me. I loved being a mother when my children were young enough to really need me. Just remember they r a rare gift and cherish them. But they need a lot my more then just love.
Even though money is really tight, being disable in a wheel chair we still need to look good we have to try even harder, I have as always been over weight so I always made it my business to try harder my clothes and shoes always looked nice, my hair was always done and my make up looked good. So my hats off to young woman it’s harder now then it’s ever been, to have it all, so keep looking good and give thanks to the internet and birchbox.
