Navy eyeliner + soft brown eye makeup tutorial

I can’t remember what exactly propelled me to go buy navy eyeliner but I saw some at Sephora and grabbed it immediately. I usually stick to black or grey, so the navy was a nice change up from the norm.

It’s been roughly 1,000 degrees where I live on a daily basis so I find that I’m keeping my makeup a little lighter, and trying to exclusively wear dresses and other breathable clothing.

The navy eyeliner, and a subtle brown lid, is perfect for a little something new and fresh, without going overboard on color.

I mentioned on Instagram over the weekend that I have also discovered the most amazing lash fibers in the history of lash fibers. Tarte’s Best in Faux Lash Extending Fibers are absolutely incredible for adding length and curl to my lashes. I’ve tried other fiber mascaras before (namely Younique Moonstruck 3D Fiber Lashes) that leave my lashes spidery and stiff. Tarte’s fibers, though, are amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had lashes that look this good. You must try them if you have wimpy lashes like I do.

I love learning about different brushes to use. I have a few I love from Sephora, but now I need to go get a few more! 🙂 Thanks!

I’m so glad you suggested Tarte because I’ve been wanting to try Younique, and looks like Tarte is a bit less priced! Thanks!

Love this tutorial! I cannot even begin to tell how you much your blog has changed my hair/makeup routine (perhaps life!!!) ever since I discovered it! I’ve always loved doing my hair but with my very fine texture, I struggled to find the right products and never really knew how to style it…enter The Small Things Blog and it’s now a whole new ball game! Being a work from home mom to two young boys, hair and makeup take a backseat but with your quick and easy tutorials, I’m able to find a few minutes each day to try something new. Love your work!!!

Love the voice over!

Like I said on IG, tarte’s Lights, Camera, Flashes is one of my favorite mascaras. It’s my fave “luxury” brand but my budget leans toward CG Lash Blast which I also love and seems to always be on an end cap at Target as they repackage all the time so it’s cheap too!

Might try those fibers soon….

Hi Kate! I have read reviews on Sephora about the Tarte fibers, and many of them claim that the fibers end up in and under the eyes. Did you have this issue?

Reply
Kate says · 07.21.14

Nope, but I think that will depend on how much mascara you put on after the fibers!

Reply
Bridget says · 12.29.14

in this video you did not put mascara on the top lashes after the fibers. So do you or don’t you add more mascara after the fibers>

My eyecoloris similar to yours and I love wearing navy clothes, but I never even considered wearing navy eyeliner. Now I must try it!

Did you experience any fall out from the fibers? That’s something I really disliked about the Unique brand. I’m sucker for a Navy eyeliner, can wait to try Urban Decays!! 🙂

Reply
Kate says · 07.21.14

No, but I think it’s important to make sure you put enough mascara on after the fibers!

Kate, I bit the bullet and got the Hourglass powder. It’s ah-maz-ing!!! I thought it would just be “meh” on my pale skin, but it’s so PRETTY!! I used it on a photoshoot for the blog last week and my photographer mentioned that my skin looked more radiant. Um, hello. Best compliment ever.

Thanks for the honest reviews! They always help me decide to make the purchase or not. I stick to the clothes and rely on you and a few other amazing bloggers to tell me what’s up with new makeup. 🙂

Kate, you are a genius! I had a OMG moment during your video when you mixed the matte and shimmer eye shadow to tone down the shimmer. Something so simple just never occurred to me. My eyes have aged such that shimmer eye shadow just enhances the lines, but I’m just not ready to go totally matte yet. I thought I’d never be able to wear shimmers from my Naked2, but right after watching your video, I tried some mixing, and was so happy with the results. Thanks for the awesome idea! 🙂

Hi Kate, I know that the Bobbi Brown eye shadow pallet is one they no longer sell but could you list the colors that are in the pallet. I have a ton of Bobbi Brown shadows and wanted to see if I had any of those individually. Thanks

Great tutorial and I love your hair! is exactly the look I’m trying to achieve – soft curls. what size curling iron did you use? My hair is about the same length but thick and a lot of it. I’m trying to figure out what size curling Iron is best for my hair that is just past the shoulders.

Have you ever tried Too Faced Better Than False Lashes extension mascara? If you have how would you compare the Tarte mascara? I’ve tried the Too Faced before and felt like I constantly had something on my lashes that I needed to get off. I even felt like it effected my vision.

The Tarte fiber mascara is totally sold out at Sephora, but is in stock at Ulta – I just checked.

** Also Kate, I am not able to leave a comment when I look at your blog from my iphone. I try to type in the boxes & the comments above keep flashing over the boxes. This may be a formatting issue but I sure hope you get a mobile app SOON!

OK so I RUSHED over to Ulta & bought up the Tarte mascara right away, & then I had to return it over the weekend 🙁
I tried to wear it several times but the fibers bothered my eyes. They were itchy & watery the whole time I had the mascara on. I was very disappointed because I thought it was a great product & it REALLY enhanced my lashes – which are long anyway but this stuff had them up to my eyebrows & beyond. I simply could not tolerate the itching & watering.
SAD 🙁
