Baby Food Making

next
Type & Click Workshop Recap

I’ve mentioned a few times on the blog that I’m making David’s baby food purees at home. Nothing against the store bought stuff, I just thought it would be fun and easy.

It is definitely easy, and I really enjoy seeing David eat up a bunch of sweet potatoes that I made for him. As evidenced by his rolls, dude loves to eat. And it is fun to watch him enjoy food.

I’ve heard of baby led weaning, and have gotten a slew of comments from readers about how great that is as well. I’m enjoying feeding him purees, and it gives us a new thing to do, so if that’s a direction you want to go with your baby, I thought I’d share a little bit about the process.

Up until this point I was using a rice cooker to steam the veggies (I would usually just sautee the fruit since it’s more water-based) and then transfer over to my food processor. It worked like a charm, but there was a great deal of clean up after I was done making the puree.

I got to try out the Cuisinart Baby Food Maker and love that it has cut down on both time and dish washing.

babyfood10

I was skeptical about the size of the canister, but after a few uses, I’ve realized that I can really cram a bunch of cut up veggies in there since they soften as they are steamed.

I was directed to this post as I started looking into homemade baby food, and found it really helpful. I bought the ice cube trays she recommended, as well as the spatula she loves.

I bought a few organic zucchini at the store and made aΒ pureeΒ using the Cuisinart Baby Food Maker.

My favorite part was the timed steam function (this is based on the amount of water you pour into the machine). I was never sure when our rice cooker was going to be finished steaming the veggies, so I had to check it constantly. With this machine, I just walked away and let it do it’s thing.

A few pumps of the “chop” button and the zucchini were smooth and ready to be divided.

Like I said, I learned I could have squeezed a lot more veggies in there, and therefore made much more food, so don’t be disheartened by this seemingly small amount!

So, it is better than using a separate steamer and food processor? Yes in the sense that you’ll have less clean up and the whole process is quicker and more streamlined. If you like to make massive amounts of purees, you may want to stick with your large food processor.

As it turns out, David really hates zucchini. I’ll try mixing it with a bit of fruit, or try again in a few days, but as soon as I saw the “tremble of disgust” take over his body (you know what I’m talking about, right?) I knew it was time to back off the zucchini. There are plenty of other vegetables that he enjoys.

One thing he does love is pears. I used to love pears but I probably haven’t eaten one in a few years. We both enjoyed pears one day, and I grabbed a few photos as Justin was feeding him.

He’s so creative with his hashtags, isn’t he?

Comment below with any questions you have about the process. I’m still a newbie, but I’ve really enjoyed it and would love to be of any help to anyone else who is embarking on this process as well.

Would you like to win your own Cuisinart Baby Food Maker? Leave a comment below (with your e-mail address included) telling me what veggies or fruits you would love to make with it.

I love that the Cuisinart cooks and purees. I have a 5 month old, so I am starting to make all of her food, and this would make it way easier. I am excited for farmer’s market season, and will make everything I can – beans, pees, squash, apples, pears, you name it!

This product is awesome – How cool is it that it will both steam AND puree?! This would save me so much time!!
I love mixing a couple different foods – my (and my son’s!) favorite combo is pumpkin and banana. I can’t wait til the pumpkins from my garden are ready this fall!

This is so funny, because I just started making our son, Walker’s, baby purees at home on Sunday afternoon! We tried green beans and he was NOT a fan, but of course loved the tiny bit of banana I gave him to taste. I would love this baby food maker, because – you are right – so.many.dishes to clean. I would really like to try out some of the foods I can’t just mash (like avocados and bananas) and use it to try things like plums, zucchini, and carrots. πŸ™‚

I would live to make applesauce! Even though I have toddlers now, I still make neatly everything from scratch for them. One of their favs is applesauce, but it’s kind of a pain. And I can’t bring myself to pay grocery store prices when organic apples are like $4 a bag πŸ˜‰

You know, I’ve never had children so all haters out there can discount what I say but…

I loved watching my best friend feed both of her children. She went through about two weeks with both of them with baby food. Otherwise, she just mashed up whatever she was cooking for her family. The kids had a lot of yogurt, apple sauce, avocados straight from the shell, baby cereal, etc. She’s all about simplicity and no extra steps in all areas of her life so it made sense that she would do this. Her kids (now 5 and 9) are great eaters.

My mom said she never bought one JAR (70’s) of baby food because it was so much cheaper to just make it herself.

What you have looks really fun! Hey, enter me in the giveaway. I have plenty of friends I could give it to. 20 years out of college and I still attend a lot of baby showers and this would be a great gift.

I made my two and a half year olds food and like you said, it’s EASY and you can really make a lot in a short amount of time. Her favorite was mango’s and bananas – I used frozen mango’s, chunks of banana and some water, steamed until soft and blended. I’ll be making some for my 7 month old tonight (he’s exactly one month older than David πŸ™‚ )!

Though I am currently making food for for my 5 the baby, I think this gadget would give me some more flexilibty, allowing me to take part of the family meal, and puree it fast. I currently use my bullet, and pop the makings a into an adorable resqueeze bag.

In general my kids are fabulous eaters. We make them try new foods about a dozen times, and I have no qualms about adding in fruit to make the veggie medicine go down! Or a little garlic salt in preschool. My opinion, is that eating is much like reading and exercise: we model good habits and give our children ample opportunities to develop a taste for good things.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi! I have a 4-mo.-old little boy who is also a roly-poly BIG DUDE like your David! πŸ™‚ We have just started introducing purees and I’ve been making his food, but have found it to be a pretty labor intensive process resulting in lots of dishes. I would LOVE to streamline the process with the Cuisinart baby food maker! I think I’d definitely try some of the basics like sweet potatoes, carrots and peas. But, I think I’d also try to sneak in some greens like spinach and kale and maybe mix them with either fruit or veggies like sweet potatoes, butternut squash or carrots to sweeten them up!

I love making my daughters baby food! I roast things a lot because it brings out the natural sweetness of fruits and veggies but also retains all of the nutrients. We are also using seasoning and spices now (no salt!). Cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice with baked apples and baked bananas is a fave!

Seam the veggies or fruit, then put the super hot food into a bowl add a little water, then take my immersion hand held blender, pour into IKEA ice cube trays. I made all of the food for my middle son using my food processor, and you are totally right, a lot of clean up. I planned on making it for my third son (just 3 months on Sunday) but my Mom accidentally dropped and broke the bowl to my food processor. So it would be great to win this!

We aren’t doing purees but when I was considering it, my mom told me not to buy anything fancy, I could just use my blender for the actual chopping But having it all in one place – steam & then chop! – is worth the extra gadget, I’d say!! Anything that eliminates extra dishes or an extra step is solid gold in mama’s book! Good thinkin’ Cuisinart.

I just started trying to make my own baby food for our first-born son, Hunter, last night. He is four months old. We haven’t fed it to him yet, but our pediatrician gave us the go ahead on Friday.

I love that the Cuisineart can steam and puree at the same time!

I would probably make apples, pears, and bananas, for sure. They seem to be staples in our house πŸ™‚

I would love to try it out on all kinds of veggies such as sweet potatoes, carrots, and zucchini. I am a very picky eater and don’t tend to cook meals with foods i don’t normally eat (most veggies). This would allow me to give my baby the nutrients he needs and a variety of foods that I would not normally cook (or know how to for that much). My husband has already joked around with me that I will need to learn and taste test myself. He eats everything and wants our child to do the same. LOL

I made baby food with my Brezza 3 years ago when this was all kind of “new”. There were some things that worked really well (pears) and some things that were a disaster (peas). I blogged about it here:
http://stroutman.blogspot.com/2011/09/mama-monday-baby-brezza-review.html?m=1
I found that zucchini was really easy to mix with fruits because it is so mild. One thing that was kind of a game changer for me was realizing the benefit of store bought organic applesauce. I mixed it in with almost everything! Making the food is time-consuming, so if you can cut a corner with a product that is already purΓ©ed, it really helps! And once he can have dairy, our other go-to was a big tub of stony field vanilla yogurt to mix with stuff she didn’t like. Enjoy! I will be starting the food journey again this fall;)

It is perfect for on the go feeding, and is way less messy than a bowl of food (even when I was just squeezing the pouch into the spoon)!
His favorite foods were mixes. He enjoyed apples and sweet potatoes (sometimes with cinnamon), pears and peas, and bananas and squash.

This would be for one of my friends! I have three kiddos three and under but the last one {at least I think he’s the last one} is already 10 months old and almost exclusively eating table food. I made my own baby food for my 2nd and 3rd kids and LOVED doing it.

I have nothing against store-bought foods…. they are expensive, but it’s a nice convenience to be sure! What I do like about making them at home is that I can mix fruits and veggies TOGETHER {Spinach-Pear-Blueberry or Roasted Banana-Sweet Potato-Apple…. MY FAVS!}

Gerber JUST started coming out with these fruit + veggie blends recently but they didn’t have them when I fed my first two babes.

Wow…. this is a really long comment. Sorry about that! I would LOVE to gift this to a friend who wants to make their own baby food. Thanks for doing the giveaway KATE!

I love all the ideas I see on Pinterest, but this would definitely make the process easier. I think I would probably try just about anything my baby would eat, just experiment with the veggies and fruits that are in season. I’d most likely plan the foods based on what we as the parents are eating sometime. Ex: Baked sweet potatoes for mom and dad, throw some in steam/blender for baby.

I would absolutely adore one of these. With my son Noah, I made all of his foods myself and never bought the jars or little squeeze guys in the store. But I had used the Baby Bullet. Very user unfriendly to me. And I didn’t have a steamer basket or appliance. My plan is for any siblings that pop along for Noah, I’d love to be able to make their foods myself also. This appliance would be amazing. Just the thoughts of knowing you personally made the foods your child is eating, you know exactly what is in them, and it was easy to do? Such an awesome feeling! Plus Noah’s favorite was actually zucchini. He’d put that away like no one’s business. So I’ll probably start there next time.

I would LOVE to start making my daughter’s food. We’re trying to learn how to start introducing solid food, as she has a milk and soy protein (which is in almost everything!) intolerance. It’s been interesting! Making it from scratch would eliminate a lot of doubt for us. Can’t wait to see her try sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas… anything!

I made a lot of PRUNES for my first. She loved them. She ate literally anything I put in front of her. It was wonderful. Now she is 2.5 and survives on crackers and air. So, that’s nice.

Number two is here though, and I would love to try this. Especially the walk away part. That would be wonderful. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the chance to win it.

My daughter is 1 day older than David, I just started making her foods, but she seems to like the store bought ones πŸ™ Do you start with s store bought to test for allergies before making a batch, or just dive in? I want her to prefer the fresh veggies, she is already pretty uninterested in eating, so maybe if I cut out store bought altogether it will help?

We have tried sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, and bananas.

Hi!
I have been following your blog for the last 2 years or so and I have to say I feel like i know you already! Shortly after you had baby David, we had our little man, Hudson. He is 3 months now and I am already researching baby food makers- this looks like it would be perfect. I am really excited to try different veggie combos to see which he will like- I personally love sweet potatoes, squash and zucchini, so we will see if we have better success with the zucchini than you did with David.

Thank you for the opportunity!

With my first two kids we just did the store bought food for the most part, as they got a little older I would cook up some veggies for them as finger food, now that I’m pregnant with number three we have changed a lot of our eating habits as a household and I would love to make my own purees this time around. I’m thinking a little of anything and everything…I like to try and get as much variety for my kids as possible!
