June Birchbox
Boy Clothes
My June Birchbox was an absolute HIT.
Caudalie and Davines? Yes please thank you very much.
Despite the fact that Davines Love Shampoo and Conditioner is formulated to help smooth hair, I used it anyway. These types of products tend to weigh down my hair, but I simply love Davines products and had to give it a shot anyway.
I didn’t try the OI All in One Milk because I wanted to try that on a different day. I love the OI shampoo, so I have a feeling I’ll love this products as well.
Well, my hair was a little weighed down (this wouldn’t be a problem for those who are looking for a little weight in order to combat frizz and wave) but it smelled like a dream. Davines knowns how to add fragrance to their products so it lasts all day on the hair. I love that.
The Caudalie Anti Wrinkly Defense Serum is fantastic. It’s a light enough serum that doesn’t feel like you are slathering your skin with a bunch of stuff before applying your daily moisturizer. It’s supposed to go under your moisturizer so I’m confident it’s working because it’s the first thing on my freshly cleaned skin.
Benefit’s They’re Real mascara doesn’t work well for me. I think maybe my lashes are too sparse? It looks spider-y and after many efforts to try to like this product, I’ve resolved that it’s just not a great mascara for me.
I love hand cream samples because I stash them all around my house! The Catherine Maladrino fragrance was a little bit too floral for my taste and I’m pretty glad that I didn’t fall in love with it because it retails for $110!
I always enjoy opening up the monthly Birchbox to see what’s inside, and this month did not disappoint!

Looks like some great products in this months box!
Your June box would have sold me on Birchbox!! I LOVE Davines and Benefit products. I use the OI line and the Love line and you are so right about the scent!! The OI hair oil is amazing too.
I have crazy long eyelashes and Benefit’s They’re Real doesn’t work for me either. I thought maybe it was just me, glad to hear its not! 🙂
Funny, I’m ALSO glad to hear it’s not just me! Like Ashley M., I also have long lashes (I usually go for volumizing mascara) and They’re Real just made my lashes clump together and look spidery as well. If you’re looking for a great volumizing mascara check out Makeup Forever Smoky Lash; I can’t even tell you how many people ask if I have false lashes on when I wear it. It’s fantastic!
I have tried to love Benefit’s They’re Real since I am an arch expert at Ulta and it just makes my lashes look spidery and sparse. Lorac Pro is my go to mascara daily it makes my lashes look so thick and full (and they are not).
I can’t believe the mascara didn’t work for you! I got the exact same box you got and immediately thought of you when I tried the mascara. I loved it but I’m sad it didn’t work for you. We should blame your sister.
Hey Kate! this is a brilliant box! 😀 I have always wanted to try Davines! Wish these online retailers would do small travel sizes! 🙂

I’m surprised and a bit confused over how you came to the conclusion this box was a success. You mentioned 5 products. Of those 5, 1 you haven’t tried yet & 2 you didn’t like (mascara and shampoo, liking other products of the brand doesn’t count. You said this product left your hair weighed down). That means you liked 2/5 of the products. That’s hardly a rave review in my book.
I’m always happy to see Caudalie & Davines in my boxes-therefore I thought it was a fun box to open.
Hi kate!! I recieved the shampoo and loved it!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I think! Haha
I’ve found that the Benefit They’re Real is better after it hangs out for awhile. It’s such a wet formula that it almost has to dry out for awhile before it works really well for me. I have a tester size of it that I’ve had forever but it’s finally started to work well for me and it add length to my lashes.
This is exactly what I was coming to say! I received it last year for the Sephora birthday reward and it was way too wet the first few times I used it. I almost gave up on it, but happened to try again later after the tube dried/thickened up a bit, and loved it.
I am in LOVE with this mascara. I have super long lashes but they’re very sparse. I first bought the trial size at Ulta. I wasn’t too keen on the $10 price tag for such a small bottle but I thought what the heck, I probably spend that much on partially used bottles with empty promises anyways and I knew Ulta had an excellent return policy even for used products. I’ve had the same results as the other fans have. It’s way too wet at first but after a few days to a week of using the product, it thickens up and becomes the perfect consistency. My only complaint is that I have one heck of a time trying to get it off. I’ve used make up remover pads, remover liquid on a cotton ball and even my mom’s go-to, Vaseline. It only comes off after a hot steamy shower, then I have to remove the raccoon eyes with my usual make up remover.
YES! I really liked this mascara (also received in my box). I was even thinking that I may make the swap, then looked in the mirror after my shower the next day and I had total raccoon eyes! I typically use Fresh facewash and it takes everything off (normally I use Clinique mascara), but this would NOT come off. I think I lost some lashes in trying. Wasn’t too keen on buying new mascara AND eye makeup remover all at once.
Thank goodness! There are so many who cheer Benefit’s They’re Real mascara that I’m always happy to hear a review where it doesn’t work. I hate the stuff and even thought it looked awful on QVC. Despite this I got sucked in and tried it (due to all the A++++ reviews). It is truly awful and only produces weird spider-lady lashes. It may work for others, but I’ve never seen it look good (on me or others).
We finally got some similar products!
I got the Benefit mascara, which I feel the same way about. Some days it looks alright, and other days it looks like a mess. I’m still searching for that perfect mascara to give my eyelashes that boost that they need! I also got the perfume, which I thought was just OK. I also got Perlier Body Cream last month, not the hand creme. It was almost too thick for my liking.
The other items I got in my box this month was a LAQA & CO. lip pencil in this fuchsia color, which I am still debating if it looks good on me (I like my pinks and neutrals!), the Aloe Source Vitamin C Antioxidant Creme, and some Antica Farmacista bath and shower wash. Overall – happy with it.
I wish I knew how you had your prefs set up! I don’t ever get anything good! Except for my first box which had a can of dry shampoo! The lipstick I received was wayyyyy to pink. And then nothing but concealers for aging skin!
I feel the same way but I get all kinds of pink lipsticks and glosses that would be something my grandmother would have worn. Kate please share how your profile is set up.
I hated my june birchbox. I think I need to update my profile or something because the products and colors they are sending just don’t work with my hair and skin. Any suggestions?
I bought a sample of They’re Real earlier this year and thought I loved it, even though it was difficult and I had to be pretty quick with a ash comb to prevent a spidery, clumpy mess. I recently tried the tarte gifted mascara (the Amazonian clay one) and it’s amazing!
I also got the Davines S/C samples and wasn’t excited. Your review makes me think I should give them a chance…
Happy Birthday! Enjoy your blessed day.
thank you!
Happy Birthday! Put your feet up and enjoy your day.
thank you !
I just want to jump on the band wagon with dislike of the They’re Real mascara too! I also received it in my box and agree with a few others that it’s too “wet”. I’ll retry it in a month or two or pump it to help dry it out. I did however receive a free sample of UD’s perversion mascara and it is AMAZING!!! I love how soft the brush is on my lashes.
I’ve never tried that- I’ll look into it!

Looks like a nice box! Though I am not regretting canceling my subscription over a year ago.

I received the exact same box! And I have unfortunately wavy and frizzy hair, and the humidity here in Chicago has made styling my hair a disaster. The Davines stuff has been amazing, really smoothed out my hair so I wasn’t such a hot mess. I will definitely be buying it. Add me to the not a fan of the They’re Real mascara. My eyelashes just clump together. I’ll stick to my Lancome!
That shampoo and conditioner smells SO STINKING GOOD!! Sadly the shampoo totally weighed my fine greasy scalped hair down. But I might look for a more appropriate shampoo by them for my hair type bc of the smell. I also have tried that mascara and not been impressed. I had a mascara in a birchbox earlier this year that I love – I think it’s called Black Magic.
Happy birthday, Kate!!!
You did get a great box! I love Benefits They’re Real mascara but it is a very personal choice. I’ve tried out that shampoo and like it too. I received it in my box a few months back. Hopefully my July box will be a hit!

I love that mascara and bummed I didn’t get it in my box! I DID get the Love shampoo and frankly, think it smells weird.
Whoa, that IS a good one!
Benefit’s They’re Real mascara doesn’t work for me either! I thought I was alone in that.
Happy Birthday, Kate.
My box was almost totally different than yours 🙁
Every box is different based on the beauty profile you fill out!
Can you give us a hint how you’ve completed your profile? Your stuff > my stuff 🙂
Thank you so much Kate!
You always make my day every time I read your post that day, especially posts about your son David.
Happy Birthday Kate!
Kate, June’s box was my very first box! And I was excited and happy with it. The only thing I had that you had also was the shampoo/conditioner/leave in treatment. You are spot on about the smell too. I love it! And it also was perfect for my naturally curly hair. My only complaint was that I still have plenty of the shampoo left, but the other is gone. Oh well. I’ve been following you for couple years now, but just in the past week or so started watching your videos on Youtube. And today, I actually used some of your tips in my makeup routine, and I must say, you know your stuff! Little things, that make a difference. Like, using the eyelash curler before AND after applying mascara. I’ve always just done it afterwards. I was amazed. Another thing, I used to apply eyeliner before eyeshadow. Why, I don’t know. But I saw you do it afterwards. Which makes total sense. So, this 50 year old Nana to 3 little ones thanks you so much for all you’re teaching me. Have a great rest of the week!
Looks like you scored on products this month! Some amazing goodies in there.
Emily xoxo

Oh, I’m SO looking forward to my Birchbox! Caudalie products are heavenly – have you tried the Beauty Elixir? I save it for those days when I need a pick-me-up since it’s a little pricy, but it’s like happiness in a mister bottle!
Yes! Love the Beauty Elixir!
Have you heard of or thought about trying out stitchfix?
I tried it once, but I enjoy shopping so I didn’t really love the concept 🙂
I just re-started my Birchbox subscription and I lOVED the June Box. My hair is thick and can be frizzy. I adored the Davines Love shampoo/condition and OI Leave-in…I already ordered some from Birchbox and I had to come and see what you thought about it 🙂 And you are right, I couldn’t stop smelling my hair after I’d used them! Your blog is a lovely place to hang out.
I bought the shampoo after about 2 uses. I have fine/oily hair btw. I couldn’t figure out why they stuck that in my box, but I’m glad they did! The milk is fab. I already have the Beauty detangler/leave in conditioner and I have probably half a bottle left, but I’m thinking about ditching it for this stuff!
June was my first ever Birchbox! The only thing we received the same was the shampoo/conditioner/leave in. I looove the smell of the Davines Love! It didn’t cause any problems with my hair since it is naturally curly. My other items were just ok. I got the lip crayon that others mentioned but I’m not sure about the fushia color on me. It was a cool shade which is good for me, and it did kind of make my eyes pop…but I feel like I can only wear it in the right circumstances since it’s kind of bright. I got the fragrance sample which smells nice except I don’t wear perfume often (I’m a lotion girl). The Egyptian Magic salve is nice. I’ll probably use it more in the winter?
Love the organic skin products you showed us! I tried them also and they didn’t disappoint me at all…
Is Birchbox the only monthly beauty subscription you do, besides Julep? I can’t decide whether to subscribe to Ipsy or Birchbox.
You website still doesn’t work properly. Can you please fix this?
Hi, Kate! I’m having trouble viewing your updated blog posts. Every time I type in the URL or click on it from another web page, it brings me to this post. The only way I can connect to your most current posts is by clicking the link through your instagram profile on my phone, boo! Not sure what the issue is, but I wanted to let you know in case other people were having a similar problem!
