Hair Fix: the dreaded back part

The Makeover Process: Blog Redesign

I’m starting a new mini series on the blog called “Hair Fix” in which I share quick tips for fixing common problems in hairstyling. The tutorials might be short and sweet, but they may be really helpful in how your hair cooperates!

hairfix

My sister and I both have this strange part in back sections of our hair that we need to fight on occasion. Sometimes the way I sleep can make it either worse or better.

If I curl my hair and separate the sections right at the natural back part, I’ll have to really work to keep it from separating during the day. Whether you have a natural part or simply have trouble blending a section of hair together as you style, this tutorial should help you out!

And more of this:

Hi Kate!

This is such a great tutorial. I am struggeling a lot with a parted back and definitly try this fix (and I am pretty sure it will change my life as your tutorials did before šŸ™‚ )

Also congrats to your new design! It’s so beautyful!

I was wondering, if there were new changes today? I usally read your blog on my cellpone. To prevent a “data overkill” I’m using an app for that. Unfortunately I just can read the text but can’t see the pictures or videos (while yesterday, after the change it was still working). Maybe there is a possibility to include some kind of a mobile compatible version on your website. Some of the blogs I’m following have this and it loads much better if you are mobile (guess because of an reduced design you don’t have to download as much as on the webbased site).

Greetings from Germany!

I suffer from this too! A hairdresser once said to me “whoa! You have a long part!”

I’ve always combatted this by doing step 2 in your tutorial but it usually splits by the end of the day. Im going to try adding step 1.

Great mini series, I think… Unfortunately I also follow on feedly, and I wouldn’t mind clicking through to have to finish a post if there were a mobile version of the site. However, when I clicked through today, the font is so tiny, maybe a 6 or 7point? (even holding my phone sideways to read). If you’d like us to always start clicking through, at least maybe make a mobile friendly page to view it on?

I started reading for your hair tutorials, and I won’t stop reading over this since I’m now a huge fan of everything you post (including your sweet baby

Hi Kate,
I have a part down the back of my head. I have to try hard to cover it. The flat iron is a great idea. I also have an issue with humidity. I’ll fix my hair and then I go outside and the humidity makes my hair look bad. Do you have any suggestions?
Btw… Your tutorials have really changed my “hair life”. I have always just blow dried it straight. Now I curl it or put it up daily.

Thank you,

I really enjoy this new Hair Fix section! I have a hair concern that you may be able to help with for an upcoming tutorial. My hair is very thin at my crown but thicker throughout the rest of my head (I am jealous of your beautiful hair-BTW) šŸ™‚ Do you have any style tips to help make it look thicker without using products like root lifters? The products just make it look greasy and weigh down the fine hair. Thanks!

Try MONAT. Their products help with new hair growth. Concentrated, so only use a dime or nickle size amount of product for shorter hair.

I am definitely going to try this. One of the biggest problems I have is that all of my hair tends to fall forward in face no matter how I style it (curled or straight). I think this hair fix will help the back of my hair, but still not sure what to do on the sides. I usually blow dry upside down for volume but maybe it is making my hair fall too much toward my face.

Great tutorial. Quick question about a “hair fix”, sometimes I want to give my hair a break from blow drying and straightening so I wash it at night and sleep on it wet. Is this something you have ever done and if so how would you style it the next day since it’s usually pretty limp and lifeless?

Love this idea for a series! Can I throw an idea into the pot for Hair Fix: Post partum hair loss! And then the little hairs that grow back all along the hairline. It’s been the bane of my hair’s existence for over a year now. The hairs are long enough that they can blend more into the hairline but I have never ending cowlicks no matter how much I flat iron them down. HELP!

A couple of months ago I had a really odd hair issue going on. The crown of my head felt sticky, and from the top of my head down about an inch it was almost like there was glue in my hair. I had no product in my hair during that period, and I couldn’t even run a brush through it, that’s how gunked up it was. I hadn’t been using any product in my hair for about a week leading up to that incident, and it cleared up after a couple of days. What in the world did I do to my hair?

Love this post! I suffer from this issue SOOO often! Another problem I deal with is kind of tough to explain. Basically, I part my hair on my right side, so the bulk of my hair is on the left. Well, the right side usually looks okay on day one, but then it gets really flat. (I have dark hair that is colored white blonde with single process and toner). I have the little whispys on this right hand side from the bleach, flat ironing, and flat iron/curling. Do you have any tips on how to style the right hand side? When I try to re-curl it the second day it ends up looking like an awkward ringlet. Help!

You are so encouraging and such a joy to read and watch. You motivate me as a working mom of a 7 year old and 7 month old to not let myself go and to do my hair and makeup, even if most days it’s tinted moisturizer and a ponytail or braid. Love the idea of the new series. A couple issues I run in to are double cow licks in the front near bang area how would you go about working with that?

Reply
Mary Schmidt says · 04.30.14

My hair issue is: I have hair down past my shoulder blades in length. All my life, I have worn my hair short, permed and rolled back away from my face. Now the perms won’t last because of meds I take. Now my hair is straight and usually in a pony tail. Why do I see most women wear their hair long and down & IT STAYS OUT OF THEIR FACE? My hair constantly gets into my face if I don’t pin it back somehow. Even in a ponytail, fine hairs come loose and get in my face. I HATE HAIR IN MY FACE!! My hair is straight and flat with fine hair that falls out of a pony tail. Even with a fine tooth hair band it falls out. I don’t know of a short hairstyle to have without a perm. I don’t want bangs and my hair naturally grows straight and towards my face.

Thanks for showing this tutorial. I am an older reader who has a different issue. Growing out my hair grey (the top is white) and I have a double crown, so hair will separate on both ends. The white hair growing out is soft and not processed so it’s starting to cover a bit at the crown but 2nd day hair separates a bit. I will try this trick on both sections and see if it helps.

Nice look on the blog. I follow on my computer so have not had any issues.

Thank you Kate! Another think I struggle with is my hairline appears to be receding around where I part my hair… I part my hair on the left and when I pull my hair straight back you can see that the left side of my hairline goes back further than the right. It’s not too bad but I have a friend with the same problem but worse – hers is practically a bald spot on her forehead where her part begins. Any tips on how to make it better or at least keep it from getting worse? I try to lightly condition the fine hairs along my hairline but I can’t tell if it’s made a difference. Thank you for sharing all of your hair wisdom with us!!

Hi Kate
I’d maybe have a suggestion for another quick fix:
If I am straigthening my hair with a flat iron (I have natural big curls/waves, similar to yours in the video), there is always one part on the back of my head where the hair won’t straigthen out at the top. That is because the angle I want to flat-iron it is very difficult to reach. How can you improve the angle so the hair can be straigthened from root to tip?

All the best from Switzerland

Thank-you SO much for this tutorial! I had no idea anyone else even knew what back part was! I never noticed this on myself until I cut my hair short, and suddenly I felt like I must be balding! I absolutely adore your blog! I’ve been reading for quite a while, but never commented til now šŸ™‚ I’m following you on Bloglovin so it’s so much easier to get your up to date posts. I love the idea of a “hair fix” section. I have literally spent hours on your blog looking at your hair tutorials and you do an amazing job, you’re beautiful! Your hair always looks spot on and it’s inspiring.
Could you do a tutorial on getting cowlicks to behave too? I’ve got one in the front (in my hairline, where my bangs are) and back of my head and I’m always fighting them. Also, I have a widow’s peak with baby fine hairs that always seem to be significantly shorter than everything else and they stick straight up because of my cowlick. How can I tame those too?

I loved today’s “Fix it” segment. I have front separation issues. A tiny little scar right in the middle makes a side part always split into 2 sections. I will try the flat iron trick.
Thanks.

Thanks for this tutorial. Between having fine hair and losing a lot of hair at the crown after pregnancy I have tried everything to fix this eye sore! Can’t wait to try this trick.

As for hair fix suggestions…

oily hair/scalp. I have fine hair that looks and feels greasy the majority of the time. I have fine hair so I need volume but a lot of products make it look greasier and weigh it down. What products can people with oily fine hair use?

Hair that doesn’t hold a curl. Sometimes after using hairspray on my curls I get the “crunchy” unatural look. But if I don’t use enough hairspray my curls fall within minutes.

Thanks!

Another issue I have with my hair are two little “horns” where the hair wants to draw up on either side of my just off center part. I love your idea of showcasing hair fix tutorials! I have a couple suggestions for topics. I have very thick, wavy hair, but the top layer is bone straight. I would love to wear it wavy, but how ever hard I try, I can’t get waves in my top layer and it tends to look frizzy. Do you have any solutions for this problem? I have also tried the surf sprays, but can’t get the beach waves they promise. Is there a special way to use the sprays? I would love to see a tutorial on these issues!!!

Thanks for the post!

I have another interesting problem. I have a fairly deep side-part (outer corner of my eye) and getting my hair on the long side of my part to look good curled usually turns into a disaster. This is compounded with the fact that my part isn’t straight–it goes back to the top of my head, then nuts a crazy diagonal from the back of my ears to the back of my head (that sounds crazy…). I end up with the dreaded back-part but at a corner at the back of my head. Maybe I’ll try this technique back there.

Side note–I’m SO THRILLED that I’ll be able to meet you at the Type and Click workshop in a couple of weeks! Keep an eye out for the zig-zag part šŸ˜‰

I have a crown cowlick that I’ve been struggling with for a couple years. I just tried this and it seemed to work for me. I normally using a teasing brush which has always left the hair a mess and I have to play with it. Using the comb seemed to be way better. The one issue that I still have is that my hair is very fine and thin so I can see my a little bit. I use a root touch up spray to tint the scalp.

I’ll try again tomorrow and see how it works.

Reply
Jill says · 12.04.14

Will this work on bang cowlicks or is there a different technique for that?

Reply
Carly says · 12.05.14

Thank you! Last year my hair started doing this. it isn’t exactly in the middle like yours, more on the side at an angle and has been driving me nuts! Since I wore my hair long normally, on the dreaded backpart days I’d pull it up or back somehow to cover it. But I (stupidly) decided on a bob recently and the day after washing/styling, my hairpart comes out and my hair is too short to pull back in a way I like.

So after countless (meaning millions) of searches online I finally found someone who has come up with a solution rather than ranting about it and “living with it” lol. I just tried this and it worked perfectly; i normally hate teasing my hair and using hair spray, BUT if it gets rid of this abomination in the back of my head, then I’m all for it lol.

So thanks again!!!

Jill says · 12.08.14

My crown cowlick is off to the left so for me, this technique doesn’t work so well. And I have so much static in my hair and nothing is helping it. I use a heat protectant cream, static guard, coconut oil mist. I can’t do anything with it because of the static. It’s truly frustrating.

Hi guys I have one down the back of my head that drives me nuts too! Sleeping on it makes it only makes it worse as well as trying to hide it in a ponytail. I use a mini (4 inches I believe) hair straightner that way I can get really close to the scalp. Then I glide it starting at the base of my scalp and direct my hair in the opposite direction of the cowlick. Then when I’m done going over the whole cowlick area I start again only this time I direct all the cowlicks down…. Works everytime for me. Also as stated on here blow drying too. But if you don’t have time to blow dry your whole head that’s when the mini straightner helps.

I am going on a upcoming camping trip where there will be no electricity available. This is a college reunion trip so I want to look my best. I have an awful back part that I am seriously self-conscious about. The silk pillowcase used to help, but as I have gotten older my hair has changed and this no longer works. I look horrible in a ball cap and I hate how I look in a ponytail. Any suggestions? Are there any dry shampoos that really work? Any recommendations on a brand? I have tried a few and had no luck. They worked for a few hours and then the dreaded part rears its ugly head (no pun intended). I have straight hair. Thank you for any help. I have been debating about not going, but I promised friends I would be there.

Not even 10 min before I found this blog,I looked at myself in the mirror, and spoke the words” I really don’t care if I’m going bald, I’ll just wear a wig” I wasn’t joking either, I finally accepted it. Then and only then did God reveal the truth to me through this blog! It reminds me of women who try and try to get pregnant but don’t succeed until they give up and accept the fact they will never have a child. It was the acceptance and surrender of my predicament that lead to the release and relief of my misery, and the truth of the matter.

Nice, going to try this. Do you have that area cut shorter? I’m wondering if a bit of a layer back there helps the cowlick or not.

Kate, thank you SO much! I never realized I had that type of part because when my hairdresser dries my hair, it comes out great from the back. I looked at the back of my head today in the mirror just to make sure it was OK and was horrified. I wasn’t sure what to do and you came to the rescue! Love the blog and Lauren’s too šŸ™‚

Do you like a certain kind of teasing devise and do you think it helps or hurts to use a light conditioner near the back part?
Thank you ! Thsnk you!!

I also just googled this issue!! Iā€™ve always done something similar to this but itā€™s so hard to fix because my hair is just weird. But, then again I never did the ā€œteasingā€ part or the first spray of hair spray. Just after I had fixed it.

Brenna says · 03.15.18

I suffer from this and have since I was in junior high. Iā€™m almost 30 now. I was once told by a barber that I had a bald spot so I was so upset for 2 years until another barber told me that it wasnā€™t a bald spot, but more of a cowlick. Mine isnā€™t in the middle, though. Itā€™s more to my right.

Would not work for me. I have wavy curly hair. Combing through and using heat just make it frizzy. Other than this annoying cowlick my hair is fine.

Hello,
My hair has only started to do this the last few months. I am 31 and its only just started. No matter what I do after a few minutes I touch the back of my head and can feel this awful part as clear as anything which is about two and half inches long.
I got my hair cut recently so I am assuming it might be from that but I cant clearly see how she cut it any different this time. Can anyone help please? Teasing and hairspray aren’t working.

I’m going to try using your solution to the back part. I don’t know if I want to invest in a flat iron, but I’ll try first without it. I didn’t always have this part, it seems like it happened after years of sleeping on my back. I had a thought of wearing something on my hair when I go to sleep, but I need to do some research on that, maybe a satin fabric.
Anyway, just bookmarked this page, always good to have info to fall back on!

Thank you! Loved the ideas!!!
I have a “georgeous” part that separates down from the crown of my head about 4 inches long.
The idea of ironing that split, is brilliant… then teasing the hair, is really a great solution to cover up the “georgeous brilliance” of that glaring zig zag part! Right?šŸ˜³

I was looking for what a long part, in the back of the head, means spiritually, instead of a perfect beautiful swirl.
I’m sure it means we are BRILLIANT right!šŸŽ†šŸ˜³šŸŽ†
Im going to look it up in Latin Hebrew and Greek.
We will see what
Uncle Google has to say about this type of irregular part….
Blessings of many more beautiful hair days:)
Grateful you shared your “BRILLIANCE”

Very helpful!! I made the mistake of having my hair cut short and this cowlick was suddenly super visible smack in the middle of the back of my head, a spiral! It had been there before but not so visible as my longer hair camouflaged it. Now I look ridiculous from the back… šŸ™‚ But using your technique I can cover it–and do an even better job of it once hair grows longer. I don’t see cowlicks when I look at other people’s hair (and of course I have been checking that obsessively, gads) but your suggestion has made things much better. Thanks!

My wife has some memory issues so I have to help her with her hair. Itā€™s short in back and has tendency to turn ā€œupā€ at bottom rather than turning in toward head. When she gets her hair cut/colored, her stylist has it perfectly turning down, but once washed the lower back turns up! Any suggestions. Thanks.

It’s called a cowlick- yes I have it too, though I’m not sure if it was caused by my gramma constantly &consistently making a center part for pigtail braids:(( Wish I could do that but I have naturally curly hair.

But…Thank you for this, anyway!

I have this issue all the time especially when laying down, being disabled and mainly bed bound doesnā€™t help as you can imagine. My hair is very similar in length and style to yours, the best fix Iā€™ve found so far is as I lay down I gently push the hair up (as if for a ponytail but looser) from the neck so no hair is on or past my neck then I grab a wide toothed comb or fingers and pull up that section which separates. If Iā€™m using the wide comb I literally comb about 2 to 3 inches of hair upwards from the root in that one area. Every single time I get up I have no separation and because the hair was gently pushed upwards I get lovely volume in my hair. Iā€™ve definitely taken on your tips, hopefully you may find mine useful too.
