Homemade Buttercream Frosting

Is there anything better than a homemade cupcake? And when I say homemade, I’m talking Funfetti box mix. That is the real stuff right there.

But the frosting you see pictured above? Well that is actually homemade. And it couldn’t be easier.
Homemade Buttercream Frosting
1/2 C butter, softened
1/4 C crisco
1/8 t. salt
2 C powdered sugar (keep it out, you’ll need more)
1 t. vanilla
approx. 2 tbsp milk

1. Cream butter and crisco until well blended.
2. Add salt, mix well.
3. Gradually add powdered sugar. Add milk to thin out/fluff up the frosting. Begin with 1 tbsp. . .add more if necessary. Add extra powdered sugar (approx.  6 tbsp) if you like it sweeter.
4. Add vanilla and beat until light, smooth and creamy.

Enjoy on a cupcake, or simply:your finger.

I made a big old batch of this last Friday! It really helps to have a stand mixer.

What’s the occasion for such cute cupcakes?

If you add a tablespoon of egg white powder(meringue powder from the baking section of michaels) it will give the finished product a “crust” once it dries. Helpful for figure piping and so on.

Thanks for posting this today! I needed a butter cream icing recipe, and was going to have to google one. I wonder if adding cocoa would be good for a chocolate cake….

Waynette – don’t add cocoa! It will be bitter.

I added about an 1/8 cup and it turned out great! I needed the base frosting to be a light brown. I would imagine it could turn bitter fast though.
