5 Great Podcasts

I listen to podcasts any chance I get! Anytime I’m in the car alone or doing a “mindless” task in my office, I have one going. Once I’m caught up on my regular podcasts, I’m always curious to find more, but that is a daunting task! There are SO MANY options available now, and it’s hard to know where to start! Below are 5 of my favorite podcasts, with #5 being admittedly a bit early to add to the “favorites” list.

  1. How I Built This with Guy Raz – I could listen to these episodes forever. Not only is Guy an easy person to listen to and very conversational in the interviews, but the stories that are told by these entrepreneurs are so fascinating. I’m not lying when I say I feel so inspired after listening to each one! I’ve listened to nearly every single episode already and am dying for new ones to come out! I’ve even considered going to a live show if it ever happens near me!
  2. Young House Love Has A Podcast – I love hearing what John and Sherry are up to. Their show is light and easy to listen to, and I find them funny and entertaining. I love their helpful segments on design or decor challenges, and their reader question episodes.
  3. This American Life – Always great storytelling on thought-provoking topics. I like listening to this podcast even when I disagree with their views, because it forces me to think about my opinions on a certain issue as well.
  4. Terrible, Thanks for Asking – I usually avoid dark or heavy topics because I can easily become consumed by something that will haunt me throughout the night. I’ve selected a few of these episodes to listen to and while the subjects can be hard to swallow, it’s been equally eye opening and at some times inspiring to hear how Nora’s guests persevere through hard times.
  5. Business Wars – I must admit I’m new to this one so it’s a little presumptuous to put it on a favorites list, but I think I’ll really like it as it continues to roll out new episodes. The host is a little monotone in his retelling of certain stories, but the topics are so interesting to me that I can get past that.

I’d love to hear some of your favorites! Please leave some in the comments below so I can check them out!

I’ve been listening to Stuff You Should Know with Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant. The topics are fascinating and fact/research-based, they range from “How the Underground Railroad Worked” and “How Bath Salts Work”, to “How Breastfeeding Works”. The hosts are witty and charming and the episodes range from 30-70 minutes each so I can pick one from the archives (which are MANY) to suit the appropriate time slot I have to listen. I’ve been enjoying them on my commute to and from work for the past few months and I’m hooked! Highly recommend!

I really like S-Town and Revisionist History. Malcolm Gladwell has the most perfect voice for radio and covers some really fascinating topics. S-Town is produced by the same group as This American Life and the journalist doing the interviews made this a very compelling story.

My favorite podcast is I’ll Have Another by Lindsey Hein. Lindsey is so down to earth and real (especially about parenting). Her podcast is so entertaining and while a lot of her guests are runners, I always feel like I just listened to a conversation between friends.

The Braincandy Podcast! It’s a great combo of funny, intelligent and witty.

Reply

I can’t believe no one mentioned My Favorite Murder! It may be an acquired taste for some, because the language can be iffy, but I laugh so hard at their commentary on true crime stories. I also love YHL, Dirty John was really good and a quick listen, S-Town, Janet Lansbury has an amazing parenting podcast that walks you through specific scenarios you may be struggling with. Love podcasts, they make mundane tasks fly by!

99% Invisible and Planet Money are both really great and both ~20-30 minutes long which I appreciate. I find myself constantly saying “I heard a podcast about that” or “I learned from a podcast that…” and most of the time it’s something I learned from one of these two shows!

Podcast that:
Makes me think – Death, Sex and Money – (from their website) about the big questions and hard choices that are often left out of polite conversation. Host Anna Sale talks to celebrities you’ve heard of—and to regular people you haven’t—about the Big Stuff: relationships, money, family, work and making it all count while we’re here.
Makes me laugh – Worst Ever Podcast – Hosted by Christine Lakin (Al from Step by Step) and Alaa Khaled, Worst Ever believes that pain is best served funny.
Makes me want to watch movies – The Rewatchables – the newest film podcast from the Ringer Podcast Network, features HBO and The Ringer’s Bill Simmons and a roundtable of people from The Ringer universe discussing movies they can’t seem to stop watching.

The Lazy Genius! “Be a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t”. She breaks down subjects and tasks we all deal with and goes over the most efficient way to complete them….cleaning the kitchen, cooking dinner, cleaning the bathroom. She also did a series on surviving the holidays and i LOVED it! She’s so relatable and practical! I always walk away with something i can use. I’m new to the Bible Binge but excited to listen!!
