The search for the right art

I’ve said this a million times but I’m the kind of person who knows what she wants in interior decorating but I can’t imagine it. I can’t create it very well in my head. I’m great at trying to mimic inspirational photos I find on Pinterest, and that is why Modsy has helped me so much this year as I redecorated my office and am currently decorating the new family room.

Right now I’m stuck on art, so I thought I’d ask for your thoughts to help push me one way or the other as far as what kind of art I should go for in the new space.

I put my very ametuer skills at photoshop to work and picked 3 fine art prints at Minted that caught my eye. I know which one is my favorite, but I’m curious which one you like the best?

I just snapped this photo of the actual space yesterday. We are getting a Kallax IKEA shelving unit in a few weeks and I’ll fill the spaces with 13×13 boxes from Target. In the meantime, I just threw in that white bookshelf so you can get an idea of what will be there.

The room still feels empty, and it certainly needs a bit more styling, but part of that is intentional. I want there to be space to breathe in that room, and I love the open, airy feel of it.

So here are the three choices.

Option One:

link to art

As you can see, this has a bit of color in it. I like that it isn’t overly colorful, but it certainly would operate at the focal point of this view of the room.

Option Two:

link to art

I love the serene feel of this piece of art. I think it would need a different frame, perhaps black? There is a little bit too much wood happening above the sideboard.

Option Three:

link to art

I like that this is still neutral, so I feel like it flows in the space well, but it’s a little bit more interesting to look at than option two.

So which is your favorite of the bunch? I’m really trying to find something that will be timeless and fit into the space well. As much as I love a gallery wall, I fear it will make the space too busy so I’m trying to find one large focal point of art that speaks to me!

    Number 2 is my favorite!

  3. Erika says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Option 3! Has some color, but it’s not bright, jarring flashes of color in an otherwise calm space.

  4. Posted November 3, 2017

Three is my favorite 🙂 it creates a focal point without being too busy.

  5. Kristin says

I prefer option 2! The colours go well with the space and I like the calm, light feeling of the image.
The other ones seem more harsh & bold to me.

    #3. But I can’t say why I picked it….

    Option 3!!

    #2 looks great. 😊

  12. Erin Reiland says

The third one blends with the overall feel of the room already. I think it would be a perfect addition!

  13. Kristin says

I like #2. There’s something about #3 and the pattern on the hutch below (which I love)) that doesn’t “go” for me. Good luck! I always say that my walls will be blank unless something absolutely inspires me. When I force art on the wall it never turns out quite right. Yet I want immediate gratification. It’s a hard balance. Lol

    #3 but #2 is a close second.

Number 2 seems to flow best with the room and create that serene mood you’re going for. I think you’re right about the frame though.

I really hate the cliche ‘think outside the box’, but sometimes find it appropriate. I have on a few occasions, just unable to find the right picture. I have acquired some beautiful pieces of fabrics including some vintage silk which I had framed and put on the bedroom wall. It just gives the room a different edge.

I say option 2. I think it goes more with the feel of the room. And I personally like the wood frame with it!

Rather than a piece of art that has no emotional attachment, I recommend creating a large canvas with a personal photo from Canvas On Demand or Walgreens. Photos of the kids are great, but quickly are out of date so I recommend a pic that you took that reminds you of where you were or of a special time so that every time to look at it you are reminded of that special time. We have 2 large canvasses like that, but also a wall of 12×12 pictures from each country we have visited. Some are of nature, some are of buildings, but they each remind us of our travels.

I think if you want timeless, what about a mirror? Then you can add decor around it for holidays/seasons; something like a garland or soft lights? Of the options, I pick #2, but with a non wood-tone frame.

  43. Courtney says
    Posted November 3, 2017

If I had to pick from those three I would pick the third. None are really great though.
It’s a pretty big wall for one single print. How about a gallery wall?

  44. Laura says

I like 2 the best. It’s calming and I tend to go for that. 🙂

  45. Joan says

    Number 3 for sure!

  46. Kait says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Three, followed by two- but with a white frame to keep with the airy-ness.
BUT! What I would personally do is a large, I’m talking 16×20 or bigger professional yet candid picture of your boys or your whole family. If its a family room, make a picture of your family the priority.

mpix is a great online source with awesome quality and great prices. Good luck can’t wait to see the finished results.

Option 2 but I agree a different frame to create a bit more contrast between finishes. Good luck! 🙂

  54. Anna says
    Posted November 3, 2017

My pick is #2! The blues in the piece of art feel calming, and I think this one ties in best with not just this room but the rest of your home too. But I definitely agree, the wood frame is too much. I think a black frame would tie in with the hardware on the sideboard too. I’m going to have to look this piece up! It would be perfect in our dining room!

  55. Laura says

  61. Rachael says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Hi Kate! Your room is looking beautiful! I used to be an Interior Designer and picking art was one of my favorite things to finish off a space! It’s like adding that great scarf or necklace to complete the look. If I may indulge you – I want to give you a couple of things to think about.

    1. 2nd option with a different frame – possibly a matte black (if you want it to pop out) or a charcoal gray (to blend) would fit well. This just pulls the eye through the room better and draws in the green from the tree, the gray from the rug, the warmth from the sideboard, and is a nice contrast of color to the floor. It adds a bit of color but doesn’t overwhelm and gives off the feeling of being effortless.

    2. I’m wondering if the size of the print is as you depicted in the picture or if you scaled it down to fit into the space between the bookshelf and plant on top of the sideboard? I ask because generally speaking finding a framed print that will fit within the length of the piece below it is a nice rule of thumb to follow. If you end up putting anything on the sideboard like plants, pictures, etc. it just gives you a “layered” look – or that you’re building upon the base which includes the print. While what you have now looks absolutely beautiful, sometimes the pieced together look can start to look too busy as it is all separate pieces and begins to overwhelm the wall and or space. Since you were so good at photoshopping this together, try finding a print or re-sizing what you have to see if you like it larger and centered over the sideboard. Then you can have fun finding contrasting accessories to go on top of the sideboard that can go in front of the print. If you don’t like it, no sweat, stick with what speaks to you! If you do, it could open up a whole new way of adding decor to a room!

When I look at 2 I see calm and love. When I look at 3 I see movement and style. I’m not a fan of 1. I guess it depends on how you want to feel in your new room. My personal preference would be 2.

  76. Rebekah Zellers says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Option 2 with a very dark stained wood, almost black but not quite! I just love the serene art combined with your calming plants…it’s just so lovely. Option 2 isn’t as “interesting” as the other two options, but it’s the kind of art that I would look at a lot and try to figure out what’s happening in the scene, but the other two options I’d just think, “oh it’s a pattern” and not really look at it.

  77. Dwn says
    Posted November 3, 2017

    The last one, for sure!

  78. Stacey says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Option three. You need the circles to break up all the angles in the room (especially if the Kallax will be there). The colours are prettiest too.

  79. Allison says

    2!

  80. Lindsay says

Tough call but ultimately I think option 2 is the most timeless. Option 3 seems too trendy and I think you’ll get bored with it. Also, blues seem like a better option since you have boys.

If you’re leaning towards option 2, Emily Jeffords is a Greenville, SC artist whose work is really similar – soft and beautiful and serene! We have one of her pieces in our home and love it! Agree that it would need a different frame though 😉

2 is my fav, but go with 3. It’s awesome as well. When I redecorated, I went with my equivalent of 3… I liked it, but it made me uncomfortable. It’s now my fav pic in my space!

  94. Misty says
    Posted November 3, 2017

    Option 2

  95. Sarah says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Wow! I love neutral colors as well, because you can do so much with them and you can switch up your designs easier; rather than bolder colors.

The first option has a pop of color that I do like, however, that is my least favorite option.

I love two and three, both look beautiful…gives you a pop of color without going overboard.

BUT I LOVE LOVE LOVE OPTION 3 THE BEST! It’s so unique, fresh and so playful. It’s brilliant!

    Good Luck choosing!

  96. Diane says
    Posted November 3, 2017

I like option three. There are a lot of linear and angular patterns against the wall–the pattern of the wood in the credenza, the lines of the shelving unit, etc. So to have something round and circular feels like a nice counterbalance. And you decided to go with a round table, right? So you will have at least one other item that is round in the space for it to relate to.

Not that any of the three choices were bad, just that my vision sees a black and white photo of your family/kids/special landscape OR a round mirror to bring some softness into the space and you just can’t go wrong with a mirror. Whatever you pick will look great! It’s your space!

Caroline Boykin is a Raleigh artist with some absolutely GORGOEOUS neutral pieces that would look fantastic in your room. Like others, I recommend investing in a piece of art that you truly love and have an attachment to. It will be something you love that will also stand the test of time.

Option 3 is my favorite. Although, I think Option 2 would work great in this space as well. Option 1 seems a little too stark white with too bright of colors (perhaps it looks different in person). I have enjoyed living vicariously through you with your remodel process!

Option 3. Option 3 picks up your favorite tones of neutrals and the circular emphasis provides a nice balance to the linear objects (rug, bookcase, future baskets, sideboard). That said, I would wait until you fall in love. Art is meant to be personal rather than a styling choice. Whatever you love will make you smile when you come into the room. Whether a painting, a textile, typography, photography – wait until you fall in love. It will hit you and you will know (then you can make the styling choices of framing, matting, hanging height). Take your time!

Number 2 is so calm and peaceful and makes the space feel welcoming. Giving the eye a place to rest is important in a space that already has a lot going on or is heavily trafficked/often used. I feel like number 2 beautifully fills the space but allows for the eye to rest. And I like the wooden frame too!

  170. Ashley says
    Posted November 3, 2017

I like 3 but it does feel too busy with the sideboard. 2 is the next obvious choice but it doesn’t really add anything to the space. Have you considered a black/white print (art, photo, graphic). Visually could give more pop w/o messing up the calm mood.

  171. Andrea says

Quick question on that rug….I’m looking for something to go in my dining area under the table. Is it plastic like? Would it work well in a dining area? I like that it is so neutral. Rugs are so hard. I have little kids and the one we have now is just gross at this point.

    Option 3

  180. Rachel Golias says
    Posted November 3, 2017

It is so fun to see you pull this room together! I absolutely love styles of the sideboard and table and how they blend warm, cozy and minimal. And I love the off-centered painting. But, I’m kind of thinking options 1 and 3 are a bit feminine, especially for a space they boys will be playing and doing homework in.
I love finding art that reminds me of a special trip or family experience. I love getting small 5×7 painting (or even cards I can frame) from art galleries when I travel. Your second option is a nice reminder of the midwest snows and I like how calming it is (maybe with a thin black or gold frame). But, I could also really see an abstract ocean/water painting here to put a smile on your face when you remember your family trips to palmetto bluff and the lake house.

  181. Jacqueline says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Option 3! I think it is the most dynamic and you won’t tire of it quickly. 🙂 It could also be used in multiple rooms!

  182. Lynn says

    Option 3 is my favorite.

  184. Angela says
    Posted November 3, 2017

I personally like number 1 on the minted website. However I don’t like it in your room. It doesn’t appear to go with the tone of the house. Although the design works better than the circles. I like number 2 also, but it’s kind of boring. I would go with the mirror idea or a large canvas of the boys in black and white. I also like the idea of using your own photography of a place you love. It can be very abstract and still meaningful to you.

  185. Carol says

    Option 3

  187. Aleassa says
    Posted November 3, 2017

If you’re looking for one statement piece, I feel like #2 blends in too much. It’s oretty and soothing but it disappears. It seems like it would need to either be part of a gallery wall or on a smaller wall to stand out. I actually like #1 the best, guess I’m the odd one! It just says “Kate” to me…minimal with pops of color to keep it cheerful. Kind of reminds me of statement lipstick with a classic outfit or something! Number 3 is my second choice, because it seems to unify all the color in the room without blending in.

    Three!

  189. Michelle says

    Third, hands down.

  191. Lisa Proctor says
    Posted November 3, 2017

Your room is lovely! The soft neutrals have a gentle feeling with the textures adding interest. The second one works really well with the console below it–but is it available in a bigger size? The soft, misty image or something similar would be fantastic if it were really big–big enough that the width of the frame were as wide as the sideboard (doesn’t need to be exact). It would fill that big wall in a way that has a lot of impact without the busyness of a gallery wall, add dimension and interest, and I think add an even greater sense of serenity (because the room would feel more finished).
By the way, the colours of #3 are great but maybe the ovals fight with the straight lines of chevrons below?
If you go with a black frame, be sure to add a little bit of black in other parts of the room too.
Looking forward to seeing the room develop!

    Posted November 3, 2017

Options one and two look like they are trying to avoid looking like anything (a bit vague), and option three looks like boobs (sorry!). If you honestly love these, that is fine! You should always choose what you love. I always recommend picking a piece of art because it speaks to your heart or says something about what you like or who you are. Most of the art on my walls is unique or custom-made, and every piece has its own story. Art is a chance to put your personality on your walls, to tell a story without using words, and I love seeing spaces that feel purposeful and special. I actually think a big custom bulletin board could be great in this space, because you can pin up pictures and mementos to it, and make it your own. Not trying to discourage you from any of these choices, as I said, choose what you love!

I love option 3. I think you can fill up some wall space with colorful artwork from your boys 🙂
In my classroom I like to use a string and small clothes pins to make a banner. That is how I display the students artwork.

  216. Maggie says
    Posted November 4, 2017

Option #2! It would look nice with a lighter color wood frame, maybe to match color of legs on the little chairs? Or a silver frame, or white. I don’t think I would choose a black frame.

#3 – adds some color but not too much.

  218. Barbara Mansfield says
    Posted November 4, 2017

#2! I feel #1 has too much bold color compared to the rest of the room and #3 makes the room look drab. #2 looks like it has some very calm blue colors so you could bring that in somewhere else in the future if you want.

  220. Emilee Johnson says

Option 2 definitely feels the most cohesive with everything else that’s going on. Doesn’t ‘fight’ with anything else, has the open airy feeling that you are enjoying, and allows you to switch up your pops of color in other places seasonally! You can add fun colors with vases, decor on the sideboard, decor on your shelves, etc. Love the new space!! 😊

  228. Lisa says
    Posted November 4, 2017

#3 fits your style and the room, neutrals with an accent. You really need a larger size print though. It should take up 3/4 of the piece of furniture below it. Alternatively, you could do two side by side, or a gallery wall. Since it’s the family room, it’s a great place to display family pictures. You can even intersperse some smaller art with pictures to break up the display.

    Option 3

  236. Posted November 5, 2017

I strongly believe YOU will know it when you see it. Art is personal and I believe you should LOVE it. It’s not a place filler but something that makes one feel a certain way. I like all your choices. Perhaps consider going to a gallery with the type of art you like and buying a real, original piece. I have collected original pieces over my life and each one reminds me of a certain time or place. Good luck. The room looks great!

  237. Lisa G says
    Posted November 5, 2017

I would choose 3, if I had to choose one, but I have another idea.

Art is so personal, and in my experience, I don’t buy it unless it speaks to me as a stand alone piece. I don’t think much about how it will coordinate with a room, fabrics, or colors. But here’s the funny thing: I have an aesthetic that is pretty consistent. I’m drawn to certain colors and patterns and images, so after 49 years, I trust that anything I truly love will fit into my home. I trust this because it has proved itself true over and over again.

Wait to fill the space until the perfect piece of art calls you to place it there. It may take a little longer. Maybe you could hang something you have there temporarily–a mirror or large basket perhaps. Trust that the right piece will come. Your room will feel more authentic and you’ll love it more if you do.

Option 2! ..see how it’s almost exactly the same eye height as your beautiful tree? Option one is pretty busy/loud and it competes with the tree. Greenery naturally is a vibrant/lively addition. No need to compete with that. (And no matter that it’s fake. Still lively!) The third is also a bit busy. If you picture, there will be a grid shelf full of bins right next to it; making a geometric, grid feeling- no matter what color bins you use.. to keep it truly a soft space as you mentioned, 2 is the way to go!:)

None of them seem like YOU! I think you’ll know which one, you just haven’t seen it yet. 🙂

Option #2 is my favorite! I agree with you though that a bolder frame would stand out. I am no expert though and I trust whatever you choose.

I like 2, but LOVE 3! Just enough color in it to really pop the wall.

My favorite is option 3. Loving the swirls and colors in the print and the black frame. It really complements the wood cabinet.
