My Hair Is . . . Really Dry

Over the next few weeks, I will be running a series called “My Hair Is…”, where I will focus on specific hair types and give recommendations for styling products & general hair fixes. Here are the first posts in the series: My Hair Is…Fine & Limp and My Hair Is…Very Thick.

Really Dry

one, two, three, four, five, six, seven

If your hair is really dry or damaged from color, don’t wait another minute to start getting it back to a healthy place! Deep conditioners will be your best friends, and I love the Pureology Essential Benefits Colour Fanatic Multi-Tasking for Beautiful Color for super intense conditioning. This makes my hair feel new again. If you don’t color your hair, you can still benefit greatly from this deep conditioning mask!

Secondly, the Living Proof Restore Mask is also great for really strengthening your hair from the inside. Redken All Soft Heavy Cream is the most buttery of all these leave in conditioners. It could be a bit heavy, but it’s worth the softening quality of it.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner  would be a great duo to use daily, or whenever you wash your hair.

Whether you wear your hair straight or curled, Pureology Dry Condition sprayed onto the ends is a nice finishing product to help soften any dry areas. Spray this before hair spray!

Finally, the best thing for dry hair to make it look less dry when styled is to use a serum. Living Proof Satin Hair Serum is light, softening, and perfect for hair that may feel like straw.

That Purology shampoo and conditioner is fantastic!., I had stopped using it because it’s so pricy, and one day accidentally didn’t get the cap closed tight and it was all over my shower floor. I wanted to cry! But, now that I’m down to only washing my hair every 4-5 days, I can swing the cost! There is really nothing else I’ve found as good as it for dry hair!

Hi Kate – do you still like the Amika nourishing mask?

I’ve been using the Living Proof split end mender and now I just want to run out and buy all of their other products! My hair feels so healthy and it smells amazing.

I’m just curious, how do any of you out there handle using more expensive shampoos and conditioners. I do okay with shampoo but I tend to love to coat my hair in lots of lots of conditioner, and end up just buying something less expensive because that just wouldn’t be sustainable with pricier products. Am I just over doing it, and maybe because the cheaper products are less effective? Just curious!

I take advantage of ulta’s sale on high-end shampoo and conditioners in the liter bottles. Most brands are under $20 a piece. Typically that size will last me almost a year! They do the sale twice a year I think.

You could get a sample size of some of the pricier conditioners and see if you notice a difference in the quantity you use. I definitely have found that with the Pureology or the Restore conditioners I could get away with less on my long hair (I use a nickel size amount +/- and my hair is thick and is about as long as Kate’s). I also then use a leave in spray conditioner after towel drying my hair and that really makes my hair soft (i’m really liking Beauty Protector’s and have liked It’s a Ten w/ Keratin).

Thank you! I’ve tried the It’s a Ten products and LOVE them!

Kate,
I have dry, damaged hair and have used a few different deep conditioning masks in the past, but I feel like they strip the color from my hair (my hair is highlighted). What is your recommendation for a conditioning treatment that will not affect my color?
Thanks!
Katie

Another reader here who can say with certainty that Living Proof Restore Mask will absolutely not strip your color at all.

Thanks for this! I loved your ‘thick hair’ version of this post too! As well as having thick hair, I also have dry hair so thanks for recommending these products!

Do you find that hair won’t hold curl if you use a serum? I’ve tried a few and a few oils a day they really only work for me if I wear my hair straight…

Kate, can you do a post on my hair gets tangled. I have fine hair that tangles so easily in the shower and then is a beast to untangle when wet. I am desperate for products to get my hair silky smooth and tangle-free.

My hair is the same way! My stylist recommended the Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer and it works WONDERS. I spray no more than 2 sprays on my hair (shoulder length) and so while expensive, it has lasted me a very long time!! It also smells amazing. Sometimes I also put a spritz on my hands before running my fingers through my hair.

Are there any pony tail holders out there made for THICK hair?! I use a regular one in my daughter’s hair and the darn thing is stretched out! Thank you!

I have thick hair and really like the thicker basic L. Errikson (sp?) ones that Nordstrom carries. They usually come in an assortment of colors (some bright, some neutral).
These have been the best for my hair (before I got a lot of it chopped off. It will be awhile now).

I really like invisibobbles because they shrink back to their original size when you leave them somewhere warm- and you get 3 in a pack so you’ll always have one on hand

Would you have any recommendations for hair that gets greasy quickly but still has flyaways? I end up washing my hair almost every day because it gets greasy but at the same time the top has been getting more and more flyaways. I want to tame the little hairs but not add more grease!

Have you considered Redkens Frizz Dismiss Towelettes for Fly Aways? Don’t make hair greasy at all and are great for flyaway.

Also, for greasy roots, how about one of the terrific dry shampoos available? They might get you through a second day

The real question I wanna know is did you actually sacrifice your nail polish for that shot?

Ahh I love the idea of this series, I’ve just discovered it! That’s such a cool shot you took the the top picture!

Is the first product you linked a mask or a leave in spray? You said mask, but the link takes you to something else. I want to buy the right thing!

I totally agree with these! Living proof is my favorite brand right now (I was actually just drafting up a post about the perfect hair day line) Also, the morrocan oil treatments are amazing and lightweight on color treated hair!

I really want to try out the pureology range however its not available in India. I have tried the Redken all soft but it didn’t make my hair as super soft as I expected.

Kim says · 05.05.16

The linked info on Redken All Soft says to rinse it out, but you mention it as a leave-in (which is what I am looking for). Can it be used that way too?

As a suggestion for another “my hair is” post, my hair is: fine, but there is a LOT of it, so the weight of my hair makes the top of my head flat/straight but the ends are wavy with a tendency to frizz. The ends hold a curl very well, but the top does not cooperate. I have a great, layered bob with a cowlick in the front, but I would like to look more put together than I do…. but the more I try the more it looks like I just left 80’s movie. I don’t like a crap ton of product in my hair, because it makes my hair look and feel dull, and I can’t stand it so I have to wash it daily when I do. I’m also over 40 so looking for ideas that are easy and age-appropriate. I’ve been fighting my hair my entire life 🙁

I really struggle with my hair as it’s oily at the roots but super dry at the ends – I definitely think I need to try and include a mask in my routine 🙂

I’ve been struggling to find a good heat protectant spray to use in my hair before flat ironing. Can anyone recommend a good one? Everything I’ve tried leaves my hair dry and frizzy. Has anyone tried that Pureology Color Fanatic spray above?
