Delivery Day!

What’s in my Hospital Bag for Baby #2

The day is finally here! Justin and I get to meet our newest addition!

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your well wishes and prayers! You simply cannot understand how much that means to me, and I’m so grateful to have such friendly and kind readers.

Assuming all goes well today, I’m hoping to be able to share a photo of him or her on Instagram at some point! Otherwise, today marks the first day of my maternity leave from the blog. Like I mentioned here, I have pre-drafted posts going up for the next few weeks. It may not really seem like I’m gone! I likely won’t be able to moderate or answer questions in the comments much, so just keep that in mind for the time being.

Thank you again, so much, for everything. I answered a few questions in a video today about the new baby!

Oh and this is SOOOO not important but all along you’ve mentioned a c-section today “unless the baby comes early” – were you saying that you were going to give a VBAC a try? No judgment here at all, just curious.

Happy baby day! So exiting!

Just wanted to say that I hate that feeding David was so painful. I experienced that with my second. YOUCH!!! Turns out she lip/tongue ties. Our ped missed diagnosing them but my lactation consultant caught them. Something to check for with the new baby.
Have blessed birthday little one!

Hi Kate, I too suffered terribly with breastfeeding – it’s very common in fair-skinned mothers apparently. I used a cream called Kamillosan which was a life saver (not sure if you can get it in the States, I’m in the UK) and enabled me to feed my baby until he weaned himself at 6 months….and I cried every time he was due to feed before that! Good luck and wishing you every blessing with this new baby.

Kate I had latch issues with my little one also. For the first 5 weeks I used a nipple gaurd and phased out of using it after that and it was a LIFESAVER!!! No pain, cracking, etc! I’m so glad our nurse was so attentive and knowledgable and gave the gaurd to us! You can buy them at target though!

I just wanted to comment on your concerns about breastfeeding this baby. My first child had horrible latch issues (her mouth was very small) and we tried for 11 weeks. Each feeding ended with both of us crying and me pumping to make sure we didn’t get a failure to thrive warning from the doctor ๐Ÿ™ I went to lactation consultants, weighed her before/after feedings etc. I too finally gave in for my sanity and used formula.

So, I COMPLETELY understand your concerns with baby #2. But, baby #2 was a different child and she nursed like a champ right from the get go. Her mouth was very different and I nursed for 2.5 years with her without any issues. I pumped while at work and was able to freeze so she had milk for 3 years!

So, my point is – David is not this baby. It really is a partnership between mom and baby and this baby and you could have zero issues. So, what will be will be. Don’t stress. You will be great, regardless of whether you can BF this wee one or not.

I cannot wait to find out if it’s a boy or a girl!

I have a little boy Brooks who will be 18months when our second baby will be born and we, too, decided not to find out the sex!

Hi, Kate! I’m so excited for your little family’s addition today! I had my 2nd on December 12- (my two are only 16 months apart). You mentioned in your video that you had severe latch issues with David- my new little guy (born 4 weeks early) has had the worst time as well. I said, in tears, every day that I was giving up my attempts to nurse and going with formula. However, FINALLY around 6-7wks he started latching properly. It was such a relief (of course, he has to be fed in the football hold which is a royal pain because I have to tote the boppy everywhere,) but at least he’s growing and doing better. All that to say, my 1st- a girl, was night-and-day different. She latched perfectly from the start and nursed beautifully until I dried up (around 14 months) due to being pregnant again. Either way, I wish you well in your attempts this time around, and hope #2 will be an amazing experience! Can’t wait to see “who” you’re having! Blessings!

Good luck today, can’t wait to hear the news and see pics of baby!! I wanted to also say that I really appreciate your comments about breastfeeding. I too was unable to do this with my first child (due to anxiety, exhaustion, etc…) and felt sooooo guilty for a long time. I think your words really resonated with me, because I agree that a having a sane and happy/healthy mom is just as important as what you feed baby. My daughter is now a healthy 3 year old and as much as I would have loved to share that bond with her, the bond that has come since then through spending time together, teaching her new things, and just loving her makes me know I did the right thing.

Good Luck Kate!! I look forward to your returning to the blog and telling us about the second round of mommy hood. I am loving all the great baby advice, and will be testing it all out on my own little one in July!! On the breastfeeding note: I am 21 weeks pregnant today and I was so surprised by all the back and forth, positive and negative advice I have been receiving since I announced my pregnancy. Especially about breast feeding (which i intend on doing for as long as I can). I have friends that found success and loved it, and others who struggled with it for a while, or just did it while in the hospital. I was given a great piece of advice from someone recently that made me feel so much better about trying it for my self with my baby. They simply said that breast milk was wonderful for the baby for whatever length of time you can provide it. It has so many natural antibodies, and even if the baby only get it for 24 hours after birth, it builds up their immune system so much better than having none at all. Its a blessing if you can give it to your child on a longer term, but of course I don’t think anyone should feel pressured to do it for a certain amount of time or judged if they struggle and make a decision to stop and formula feed. I wish you the best of luck!!! you will be a great mommy of 2! Praying for a safe delivery and quick recovery for you after your C-section, God Bless.
-Liz

congrats kate! can’t wait to hear if you’ll be adding more blue or switching it up with pink this time!!

I’ve had this thought lots of times, but hearing you talk about your breastfeeding experience again and knowing that david has a gap in his teeth, I would almost bet money that he is lip & tongue tied. there are tons of great resources out there regarding lip & tongue ties, but unfortunately, most pediatricians & lactation consultants aren’t even trained on these. my daughter was both lip & tongue tied and it’s a nightmare. just some food for thought and something to look into if this baby is a bad breastfeeding experience too. (please don’t think I’m crazy!!! I just mention this because I had never heard of it until another mom suggested I look into and low & behold, my daughter was severely tied!)

Reply
Laura says · 02.13.15

You are right about tongue-tie being a possibility, however Kate has previously said that it was looked into and David was not tongue-tied.

Can’t wait to see what this baby is!!! Either would be wonderful…two boys to play together would be great, knowing you have one of each would be great!

And SOLLYWRAP!!!!! THE BEST THING EVER!!!!! I never really wore my first, but with my second, dude that baby LIVED in that wrap until he was 3 months old. He’s 4.5 months now, and I still use it regularly, but this early days, he was in it basically every moment I was awake.

Good luck today! I’ll be watching instagram!

Just wanted to encourage you to seek help from a lactation consultant if you have the same BFing issues! It’s not normal for you to be in pain! I am breadtfeeding my third baby, and I’ve seen a lactation consultant with all 3 kids because they all had different issues. With my first one, I wasn’t positioning her properly even though she had a great latch, so it was causing me pain. My 2nd one was lazy and didn’t want to work for colostrum before my milk came in. And my third had an awesome latch but i was in pain, so I asked them to check him for a tongue tie. And having that clipped in the hospital made an IMMEDIATE difference. Not that formula isn’t ok! I just try to encourage everyone to seek help to make it the best possible experience. Saying a prayer for you today!!!

My third is still nursing at night at 13 months. If you get the same lactation consultant ou had with David, ask to see someone else. That made all the differen e for me.

As always, love your video! You seem to have such a great, relaxed attitude about having your second baby, and I think that gives you a remarkable leg-up, if you will, as you enter this stage of transition. Your experience with breastfeeding David sounds so painfully similar to mine with my first. I’m expecting my second in a few months and, like you, am cautiously optimistic about having more success this time. I HIGHLY recommend seeking educated counsel regarding tongue and lip ties if you do experience latch difficulties again. I learned that my daughter was lip-tied months after the fact, and having that corrected could have made all the difference in the world! Best wishes to you and your growing family!

What an exciting time! I can not wait to see what the gender is this time! Either way, the baby will be as adorable as David is! Names are so hard. My husband and I like traditional names & I also thought of what our girls names would sound like as they were older. I also chose names that were in the family. Naming our 2nd girl was harder- b/c our first daughter has a name that I love so much- I also wanted their names to be from the same time frame- not be matchy-does that make sense? We named our first girl Elizabeth & our 2nd girl is Katherine. I think (if u have a little girl) either of those are so pretty & it sounds good w/David. I think because your name is Kate, Katherine would be so sweet! But hey- It may not matter. It may be a boy name after all. Good luck! Hope everything went as planned.
