Sweet Summer Lemonade

Did you know my first blog was named lemon sugar? Yes. I thought of that name because I like(d) the color yellow and I like sugar. I only used it for a few months before deciding on The Small Things Blog and once I made the switch “Lemon Sugar” was gone for good. It sounded like a cooking blog and a cooking blog this is not!

I have a very complicated recipe for you today of things that are hard to find and challenging to work with.

You need lemons, water and sugar.

So, I’ve been a lemonade-drinker for most of my life. I really like sugar, so sweet drinks are much more preferred by me than pop (hello fellow Northerners!) or frankly anything else.

This recipe is pretty simpleΒ but if you’ve never made homemade lemonade, you should.

Sweet Summer Lemonade

12-14 lemons

2 cups sugar

water (roughly 9-11 cups)

1. In a pot, dissolve sugar in 3 cups of water over medium/low heat. Once dissolved, remove from heat and cool.

2. Juice about 12-13 lemons, reserving one to slice and drop into lemonade pitcher.Β I used a juicer, but you can also squeeze by hand. Store in refrigerator until you are ready to make the lemonade.

(steps 1 & 2 can be done up to a day ahead of time)

3. Pour lemon juice and 3/4 of the sugar/water mixture into a large pitcher. Add 4 cups of water, taste test to see how tart or sweet the lemonade is. Adjust accordingly. Add more water if it’s too strong, and if it’s too tart, add more sugar/water. If you are pouring over ice, be sure not to over-dilute the lemonade! The melting ice will dilute it a bit.

I was feeling particularly summery the day before I made this lemonade,Β so I decided to make some fruity ice cubes. I cut up lemons, limes and strawberries but left blueberries and raspberries whole. I dropped different combinations of the fruit into ice cube trays, and poured some Simply Lemonade I had in my fridge over top to create “lemonade ice cubes”. I didn’t want the lemonade I was making to get overly diluted, so I factored that in when I made the mixture.

Drop a few cubes in and pour lemonade over top!

Enjoy!

I love the ice cubes, I couldn’t help but notice how perfectly “cubed” they are. I need a nice cube tray that makes them like that!
