bareMinerals BareSkin Foundation Review

Well, I finally got my hands on this heavily anticipated foundation.

I discovered that bareMinerals was launching a liquid foundation a few months ago and I eagerly awaited the day for it to launch. QVC began selling it prior to the official May launch date, but I waited until I could get properly color matched before I bought it.

I approached the display at a bareMinerals store and grabbed the bottle I thought would be closest to my skin tone. An employee hurried over, offered to help, and directed me to a bottle about 5 shades lighter than what was in my hand.

Don’t be swayed by the color of the bottles if you are shopping alone.

He set me up with the shade “bare shell” and it is exactly the right color. I told him that I used “fairly light” when I used to use bareMinerals loose powder foundation regularly. According to him, “bare shell” is comparable to “fairly light” in powder.

He suggested I get the brush but I turned him down.

I own a lot of brushes. I figured I could use what I have at home. But, after giving it a bit of thought, I decided to purchase the dedicated brush for this serum foundation in order to try it in the best possible way–the way it’s meant to be used.

bareminerals

I applied Laura Mercier Foundation Primer to my skin prior to applying the foundation.

Next, I placed one drop in the well of the brush and buffed that into my forehead. I continued down to my cheeks, applying one more drop as I got to new parts of my face (so, 4 drops total).

baremineralsserum

The coverage was fantastic. Fuller than I thought it would be, but it didn’t look too heavy. You know how some serums can have a gel-like feel on the skin? This doesn’t feel like that. It feels a little bit heavier, and just ever so slightly more oily. I really hesitate to write the word “oily” as a descriptive term, but if you use it you’ll know what I mean. It didn’t leave me shiny, nor did it feel greasy, it just felt hydrating. I set it with bareMinerals Mineral Veil and then examined closely.

I really love the way it looks on my skin. I was expecting a sheer finish, but was pleased that it left my skin flawless but without a cake-y finish. In general, I really enjoyed it! I tend to have dry skin, so this formula works for me. I would imagine, but don’t know for sure, that if you lean towards to oily end of the spectrum, you may not like how this feels on your skin. But, if you have normal to dry skin, this should work perfectly for you.

Update: FAQ’s from comments

1. Do you like this better than Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Airbrush Foundation?

It’s not a better than thing. Both foundations are pretty different, and I like them both for different reasons. I like the Tarte foundation because it’s light and breathable, but still a full coverage. I like the bareMinerals foundation because it’s a softer, more hydrating finish for my dry skin and still leaves a great coverage. Tarte is great for daytime, casual, don’t need a “full face” look, while the bareMinerals is a more “evening” or “full face of makeup” look and feel.

2. Do you think the brush that was made for it is essential?

It’s hard to answer this. I do think it’s incredibly effective for this foundation which is quite runny. Would another stippling brush work? Sure. Do you risk the product slipping into the bristles instead of sitting on top like it does on the bareMinerals brush? Yep. So, I think the brush is worth it for the easiest and best application of the product. You could make do with something else but you may have to make some adjustments.

SOOO excited to give this a try!! I have been wanting to switch from their powder back to a liquid foundation and was really excited when I heard they were coming out with one! Thanks for the review!! I’m going to give it a try!

I would recommend taking a mix of both, at some time use powder and someties liquid to justify so the face do not get to used to one chemical to protect the skin tone!

I like the Tarte foundation…once I figured out that you dip the brush into the mesh. It is a bit messier and I am still a Bare Minerals fan but this does give a different look.

At Christmas I started using bare minerals. So when I saw this I was pretty excited to try it. Now I know what to expect I am going to head to my local sephora to get matched. I love the way the powder looks in my skin.

This looks like a great foundation to try, especially since I have been looking for a new one lately. Thanks for telling us about it!

I love this so much. Unlike the powder it doesn’t get cakey on the skin and had a very nice finish. Even my husband said it looks nice and he doesn’t normally notice anything!! As I’ve gotten older with more fine lines I haven’t liked the bare minerals orinal powder as much, so this came out at the perfect time !!

That’s is so funny! I judged poster last night a question under the tarte powder foundation this very question! I was in sephora yesterday and saw it and wondered if you have tried it and what your thoughts were on it. Do you like it better than the tarte?

This was my question as well. I’ve always preferred a powder foundation and was planning to try lathe Tarte one next after reading your review. Would love to hear how they compare.

that was exactly what i was thinking- how does it compare to the new taste one?

Was wondering the same thing? If I’m shelling out some cash this weekend, should I try the Tarte or BM first?

That was my question too! I am looking for something that is light and doesn’t cake. I live near Charlotte so looking for something that will be good for the heat and humidity!

I was thinking the same thing! I went out and bought the tarte foundation and have been liking it. But I still miss something about a liquid foundation. How does this compare to the tarte?

One other option to try is Laura Mercier powder foundation. This is very controllable and has a lovely finish. While pricey, it lasts a long time.

Reply
Erin says · 05.15.14

I purchased this foundation last week, and I absolutely love it. My skin is beginning to show signs of aging and has become extremely dry, and this foundation is perfect. I have been setting with original formula mineral veil and it provides the perfect amount finish.

Arielle says · 05.15.14

Good tip on getting color matched. I saw a review where someone received two different shades from online and neither matched. I think this will be one of those things to certainly buy in store.

Reply
Melanie says · 05.15.14

I love it also!! I have always used the original Bare Minerals foundation but felt, having dry skin, that I needed something a little more moisturizing. I was so excited to hear about this foundation and ordered as quick as I could. I love it!!! I’ve had so many compliments on my makeup since I started using it. I agree with Kate…someone with oily skin may not appreciate it as much.

Reply
Amanda says · 05.15.14

Just bought this last week, and I’ve been so happy with it! I actually have pretty oily skin, and this has been the only liquid foundation I’ve found that helps keep that in check all day. I also set it with the mineral veil. Love it!

Reply
Meredith says · 05.21.14

For someone with oilier skin using this, do you find it stays put pretty well or, by the end of the day, has it slipped or disintegrated off your face a fair amount? Trying to find something that’s fairly fuss-free and has staying power. I’d go with the powder version, but my skin has a terrible reaction to the minerals in it.

Reply
Angela says · 11.16.14

I have oily skin and was very excited to try this product. While I loved the powder version of BM, as far as how it appeared on my skin, I did not like that the powder could get everywhere so liquid sounded promising. Unfortunately, for me, a couple hours after application, the coverage starts to separate/crack. So for a quick fix when this starts to happen, I just re smudge with my fingers. By the end of the day, not much coverage remains and everything I carefully covered up in the morning is totally visible. I usually finish off with a dusting of powder but that doesn’t help much as far as staying power. I’m now searching for something better. Anyone have any recommendations? It would be great to find a foundation that will last the whole workday.

Reply
Jenn L. says · 05.15.14

Thanks for trying and reporting, Kate! I want to give this one a go, too – and I think the brush is really neat-looking.

Reply
Darci says · 05.15.14

Looks great on you! So, would you recommend getting the brush?

Reply
Megan says · 05.15.14

I was also very excited to try this new foundation because I love other Bare Minerals products. However, I have combination skin. Oily in the T-zone and super dry in other areas. I found that no matter how much or how little I use, the foundation builds up in my pores and it settles into fine lines and wrinkles. I apply it to my forehead first and by the time I get to my chin, I can see the foundation settled in the wrinkle on my forehead from squinting. So, I’m not crazy about it, but maybe in the winter when my skin is extra dry it will be great.

I also noticed an odor. I returned the makeup because the smell really turned me off.

Reply

The smell is horrible. I don’t know if I will stick with it soley for that reason. My 3 year old kissed my cheek and asked “why does your face smell?” Not attractive.

Reply
Teresa says · 12.19.15

I’ve used Bareskin for a few months and I noticed that all of my brushes and the pad in the perfecting veil case all have the same stinky smell. I smelled the actual foundation bottle and it doesn’t seem to stink. Weird! I googled whether or not it could stink up my brushes and it led me here! MAYBE, I need to clean my brushes more often, but it definitely leaves a stink!

Gerri says · 02.11.16

I love bm and i love his product..unfortunately i cannot stand the smell, it drives me crazy alllll day

Kacie says · 05.15.14

I am so glad you did a review on this product, as I have been debating checking out the liquid foundation… but just wasn’t sure. I am a devout BE follower, but stopped using the powder foundation about a year ago when it just wasn’t doing anything for my face anymore. I switched back to a liquid and went with the Smashbox 15-Hour and it’s been doing a good job ever since. My skin is combination, so I’m not sure if a serum is the best choice… but hopefully I’ll get to try a sample soon and can make that decision. 🙂

KE says · 05.15.14

Kate – So in your opinion, if one tends toward the oily spectrum, do you think the Tarte foundation you reviewed would be better than the Bare Minerals? I am looking for a foundation to where in the Summer time that doesn’t look cakey, but still has some coverage. I tend to “glisten” in the Summer. Any suggestions you, or any of your followers have, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I was hoping you’d review this! I bought this last week, and I really LOVE it. I think it’s the perfect amount of coverage and doesn’t feel cakey at all. I love Bare Escentuals products already, so I’m so pleased about this one. I love the brush as well. Very innovative!

Thank you so much for this review. I’ve been a bare minerals user for quite some time now, but was a little skeptical about their liquid foundation (for fear of it being too oily on my skin). Now that I’ve read your review, I can’t wait to try it! Thanks again!

I bought this from QVC when it first went on sale there. The one thing I have found is that I don’t actually need the 4 drops that I was applying in the beginning. I put 2 drops in the brush now and buff a little on my forehead and each cheek to distribute the foundation. Then, I buff it all in and cover all areas. It’s especially nice for days where I want coverage, but a little lighter coverage. Then, I add my blush or bronzer and set it all with Mineral Veil.

Reply
Alisa M. says · 05.15.14

Happy to see your review.
I’ve been using the serum foundation since April, I got it early from QVC. I guessed on the color & thought I did it wrong, so I went to my local Sephora to try other colors. My guess was right! The next closest colors were way off, the colors on the bottles are deceiving.
It took me a little while – but now I really love this foundation. It blends right into my skin, I use the brush & follow that with a light finger rub to really blend. I’ve used BE for years & had grown long tired of the loose foundation, I tried the pressed Ready version which is less messy but found the powder still settling into my fine lines. I was wanting more – glad BE delivered!!

How does it compare with the philosophy foundation you reviewed several weeks ago? I have been using Hope In A Jar and I love it!!!!

The Philosophy foundation is much more sheer and lighter in texture.

Reply

I bought the Philosophy foundation and felt it has very good, very close to too much for me, coverage. If BareMinerals is heavier, that’s pretty heavy. But I will go check it out BEFORE I buy it. 🙂 I am having to thin out the Philosophy with moisturizer. I am guessing I prefer a pretty light foundation but something that does provide light coverage. Having said that, I am learning so much from your blog and I appreciate you!!!!

Glad to hear this offers good coverage, AND it is more moisturizing than the powder BM. I loyally used BM for several years, but found it was too drying. I switched back to liquid foundation for the moisture. I may have to give this a try! But is the brush really necessary? Do you think it can be used with another liquid foundation? Would another foundation brush be as effective? I’m glad you reviewed this!

Reply
Megan says · 05.15.14

I, too, was super jazzed to try this foundation. I found that this is the WRONG foundation for anyone who is broken out. It covers really well for clear areas of the skin but is hopeless in broken out areas. I’ve been either using it as a base for the regular bare minerals powder regime or not using it at all. I so wish it covered acne better. I believe it would make the face more flawless in time (much like BB Creams do). Hopefully once my skin decides to catch up to my actual age and stop living in teenager land I will be able to appreciate this foundation more. As for anyone asking if they should get the brush, YES! It is like no other brush and designed specifically for this foundation.

I also tried this at Ulta last weekend, and was cautioned by one of the girls there about breakouts. I then asked her about Tarte after reading your review here, and she liked it but told me she preferred IT cosmetics version, as it feels lighter on the skin and has silk, which she said would be better for my skin. I’ve had it for a week now and LOVE it. I feel like I barely have anything on and it’s got great coverage. Have you tried it? Maybe I’ll give this one a chance the next time, it looks beautiful on you!

Michelle says · 06.02.14

I just wanted to point out that the last time I was at Ulta looking through the Bare Minerals section, one of the employees came over and struck up a conversation. After a few minutes she asked me if I was a dedicated BM user because she said they had a new line in called IT cosmetics and I should try it. After I turned her suggestions down. Several times she finally says she needs to get back to the IT cosmetics section since she is their employee. I think that’s really deceiving because I assumed the gals there were Ulta employees and not pushing a certain product. Just a thought for you since that may have been the case with your Ulta experience also.

I’m glad you reviewed the new Bare Minerals liquid foundation. I went to the store to get matched. They put it on my face and I wore it for the evening. I loved the look of it! What I didn’t like is that it felt heavy on the skin. And it was hard to wash off. I also broke out (although I had tried the Target foundation too so I’m not sure which caused this). Wish they would make a lighter texture with the same coverage.

You are so making it harder for me to stay away from Ulta or Sephora! haha! I have been wanting to try this foundation every since I saw Love, Shelbey post about it.

I find myself reaching for the powder Bare Minerals for summer as liquid foundations ALWAYS no matter what I do, melt off of my face. WITH the exception of Tarte Tinted Moisturizer “foundation”. Do you think that this will hold up in the extreme heat/humidity Illinois has?

I have been using this now for five days. I have oily skin and have battled for years on finding the perfect powder or liquid foundation. I went to Ulta with just eye makeup and just my matte Murad face lotion applied. I had the technician at Ulta apply the new Bare Mineral foundation to my face. I was very happy with the even coverage and the light weight feel of it. After a couple of hours my face had that glossy oily appearance. I am guily of purchasing it, because I had not been happy with the pressed powder foundation either. I set the foundation with a product by Laura Geller the invisible oil blotting powder, which seems to be helping on controlling the shine. If anyone else has a good recommendation for a matte foundation please share.

Reply
Lisa says · 05.15.14

Did you try the Bare Minerals Matte powder foundation? I accidentally bought that one once and it was so dry which means perfect for oily skin. They have the regular loose powder and then the matte formula.

Reply
Meredith says · 05.21.14

I love the buildable coverage and staying power of the matte Bare Minerals but unfortunately for me, my skin reacts negatively to the minerals in it causing extreme dryness, patches, and breakouts. It wasn’t until I tried it again years later that it occurred to me that it might have been causing a lot of my recurring skin issues. I have used Everyday Minerals off and on over the years and invested in it again recently. They don’t contain the same minerals as BE does and offer a free sample set so you can figure out your best color match.

I’m in love with Benefit Big Easy BB Cream. It’s a full coverage (in my opinion) without feeling like one. I’m super oily and it controls my oily skin quite well. I do set it with Nars Powder Foundation (because I like a super matte look) but I love how it looks after about an hour when everything has blended together and with my skin. I’m very fair so I went with the lightest Big Easy foundation and I use Siberia from Nars. I very acne-prone as well and this has really helped my skin. Good luck!

I so wanted to love BM’s liquid foundation, but it ended up being a disappointment. I’ve used BM’s original powder foundation for about 10 years now and love it for the most part, but thought that a liquid version might be less messy…I feel like I always end up wasting a lot of product with the powder, is that just me? I have combination skin with an oily forehead/nose and dry cheeks and the liquid foundation just seemed to settle in my pores and the creases around my nose. It never really felt like it had “dried” once it had been on my face for several hours, it just felt sticky 🙁 Hoping maybe it will work better for me in the winter when my entire face is drier.

I, too, would love to know which foundation you prefer…BM or Tarte?

Thank you for your great review. Will you ever do a you tube video on this product?

I got this a couple weeks ago, and I absolutely LOVE it. I agree with so many commenters here that a little goes a LONG way, and you really only need 2-3 drops for your entire face (be sure to apply just 1 drop at a time), the color that matches you is going to be WAY lighter than you thought, and I was shocked at just how light I had to go to get a match! Lastly, I totally recommend you get the brush! The density, the material, it needs that particular combination to work properly. The girl at my local Sephora was sweet enough to do a very thorough experiment with several brushes because I wasn’t going to buy the brush since I already have so many…I bought the brush. At almost 44, I’m probably quite a bit older than the target audience, but I find it looks great on my older skin.

I have very sensitive skin so I have been using the Bare Minerals powder formula for years but as I get older (lets just say over 50), I have noticed that it just hasn’t been working the way I like. I tend to lean toward the more natural look. I was just getting ready to switch over to Juice Beauty since they have just recently come out with a foundation when I saw this come out so I bought it instead with the brush. I also use a total of 4 drops and I absolutely love it. I used to have to use a separate liquid by Nars to cover up the dark circle under my eyes plus concealer for a few minor scars, now this does it all so I have cut several steps. I am very happy, and my face feels very soft. My friend has also switched and she looks great.

Quick question: does the coverage last all day??

thank you, your face looks flawless! 🙂

LOVE the way this looks on fair skin, as I am pretty pale as well. You look stunning! I fall somewhere between light and fairly light in the powder and now use Porcelain in the serum. I adore the natural coverage it gives me… also nice and hydrating for dry skin. I have found that the patented brush does not work as well as other brushes in my collection that I have tried with the foundation… I prefer the airbrushed look my It Cosmetics foundation brush gives me. Thanks for the review!

I love Bare minerals products! They are just of few brands that doesn’t cause me breakouts. I’ve been really looking to try their new liquid foundation, I’ve been expecting for quite some time. But now that you said that maybe it won’t work for skin that are not normal to dry. I don’t know what to think. My skin is combination and oily on the TZone but I guess I will take the risk and buy it. Most of bare minerals makeup has never disappointed me. Unfadingbeauty7.blogspot.com

I have extremly dry skin, but i have still used bareMinerals loose powder for years. I have been afraid of using something different, from fear it would break me out. Since i have never used a liquid foundation with a brush, I’m pretty clueless on how to put it on. A tutorial or just a few tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have both sensitive and oily skin. I have been using Bare Minerals matte powder for a couple of years now, off and on with Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream. I like the feel of the powder, but as many others have stated, as I have gotten older (fine lines), it settles a little too much for me, even with primer. I switched back to Camera Ready BB Cream by Smashbox and use a foundation brush to apply over POREfessional by Benefit and like the coverage and stay power. Saw the Bare Minerals serum recently at Ulta and gave it a try. Get color matched!! I ended up several shades darker than I had picked out, the bottles are very deceiving! They were out of the brushes, I had a Sephora mineral brush and it works fine. I still use the POREfessional, I just like the way it smooths my skin before foundation. I use about 3 drops and get great coverage. I top with Nars Finishing powder and although I don’t get too shiny, I still blot a couple of times a day to keep shine at bay. Overall I like the product, the test will be the summer and humidity we experience in Indiana…

Really enjoyed your blog! You look absolutely flawless!! I just wrote a piece on BareMinerals too! I am new to this brand but I love it already. It feels as if I am wearing no makeup at all but it corrects my imperfections in a natural way!

Just tried this at Sephora yesterday and bought it immediately. I have very oily skin but this didn’t feel greasy to me at all. The color stayed true even after I had it on for awhile (most foundations turn dark or orange-y after about an hour). I LOVE it!!!

Thanks for the review! I also have dry skin and gave this foundation a try this morning (I received a sample from Ulta) and I could not be more pleased with it too! It seems a bit expensive for a foundation (for me) but I really think that it will last a long time since such a little amount goes a long way. I did not purchase the brush and honestly don’t think I will. I have the Tarte airbrush finish bamboo brush and used it with the Bareskin and it looks great. Instead of putting drops on the brush, I just put them on the back of my hand and applied by picking up small bits at a time with the brush. Do you think it could be one of those foundations that looks great but causes terrible breakouts in a few days?

This is a great post, at 23 I’m only just realising that I need to change the products I buy to suit my skin better. I have oily skin and have just bought a matte foundation (have yet to use it) so it’s great to see other products that will help! Do you have a post on matte foundations?

I really did not like Bare Minerals liquid foundation and I am usually a huge advocate for Bare Minerals. I have combination skin and I feel like it gets cakey and creased in my T-zone and it really accentuates where I am dry… all in all I am not a fan. I’ll stick to Urban Decay’s Naked for now!

I tried Bare Minerals liquid foundation back in August and used it for about 4 months because I loved the coverage. My skin was fine for a while, but then I noticed that I was getting some breakouts here and there… then one morning I woke up and realized my whole chin and cheeks were covered in closed comedones. I stopped using it about 6 weeks ago and while most of the acne is gone from my cheeks but I still have a lot on my chin. It’s sad and depressing and I hate it, but I know it took a while for my face to get where it was and it will take a while to get back to where it used to be.

I love this product so much but it is SPF 20. My wedding is coming up, do you think this foundation would work well with all the photography?

I was hoping you’d review this! I bought this last week, and I really LOVE it. I think it’s the perfect amount of coverage and doesn’t feel cakey at all. I love Bare Escentuals products already, so I’m so pleased about this one. I love the brush as well. Very innovative!
