Blogging: Part 2 // growing your blog

The best wedding day advice I ever received was from a client. She told me to pick out a new perfume and begin wearing it on the day of my wedding. Wear it through the honeymoon, and for a few months afterwards. Then, pick out a new fragrance, and only wear my “wedding day” fragrance on anniverseries or special date nights.

Our sense of smell ties us back to our memories with such force. So, now everytime I spray the perfume I wore on my wedding day, I’m taken back to that moment. It’s quite special to me. And I’ve recommended that everyone else do the same thing.

I’ve picked out a few of my favorite fragrances, and ironically my wedding fragrance isn’t pictured. I have it in my wedding box and forgot to get it out. It’s a Bath and Body Works body spray called Carried Away.

I’m fairly sensitive to over-powering smells that are too floral or strong, so I tend to reach for fruity, soft scents.

1. When Allyson and I were in Chicago, we made a quick stop in Sephora. After we checked out, we walked past the fragrance section, and she grabbed this perfume, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia. She spritzed it on a sample stick, and after she smelled it, she passed it over to me. We both gushed over it instantly. It’s the best perfume I’ve ever smelled. The gardenia isn’t over-powering. It’s a light and feminine.
It comes with a pretty hefty price tag, so once we were back in Raleigh, I went over to Ulta to pick up some makeup. At the check out, I asked if Ulta ever sends out coupons that will work on fragrance purchases. She cashier told me no, and that the only thing I could use is my points.

“What points?” I asked.
“The points you earn from shopping here!” She looked and the reciept and pointed to how much money I had earned to use toward whatever I wanted in the store.

After shopping at Ulta for many years, I had racked up quite a few points! So, since it was the deal of a lifetime, and I couldn’t go another day without smelling like Gorgeous Gardenia, I picked up a bottle and have worn it every day since.

2. Escada Rockin’ Rio is a perfect summer fragrance. It’s tropical and fruity, with a hint of floral. It reminds me of the beach.

3. My mom wears J’adore Dior every once in awhile, and bought this for me a few years ago. I like it, but it’s pretty strong. When I wear it, I have to spray it on the lower half of my body to prevent a headache–yeah, either it’s that strong or I’m that sensitive to smell!

4. Banana Republic W is a great everyday fragrance. Not too floral, and lasts all day.

5. Dolce and Gabana Light Blue is fresh and citrus-y. I bought this for my mom and sister for Christmas.

6. I picked up this Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange fragrance at Target. The packaging is really cute, and the price could not be beat.

7. The Michael Kors rollerball is a perfect neutral and subtle fragrance. If you don’t wear perfume, or don’t want anything that would be too intense, try this one. I receive compliments every time I wear it.

I heard somewhere that smell is the strongest trigger for memory. Like people with amnesia, bring them their favorite food, and it can trigger some sort of memory. Perhaps it is a scientific study or something.

Anyway, I think this is a good tip.

Hi Kate,

I love your blog! Thank you for all the great tips 🙂 I just had to comment on this post – I did not choose a scent for my wedding day, but I kind of wish I had. You are so right about scents triggering memories. I did bring home some yummy shampoo from our honeymoon and used it for a couple of weeks after and it took me back to that beautiful place! Great post 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend!

Kate, this is the best advice. I actually ended up doing this by accident just because I wore my wedding perfume (Herve Leger Paris from Nordstrom) and then began storing it in the freezer afterward to preserve the oils, meaning I don’t wear it as much and use my more recent perfume purchases. Now I just get it out for special occasions and I always think of my wedding day when I do. I strongly recommend the freezer technique. Fragrance oils can go rancid over time, and freezing them halts that process. I am not sure how long, but I have been married 7.5 years and it is still great. The alcohol in the perfume prevents the liquid from freezing solid.

I did this for my wedding (MK Lola) and also the birth of my baby… Not a strong fragrance for the birth, but a new lotion from Bath and Body Works to wear after I had showered and cleaned up because what you said is exactly true- every time I wear either perfume or lotion I am taken back to one of the happiest days of my life. Such good advice!

I have loved Clinique Happy since I was a teenager. You’d think my scent preference would change (31 now) but still love it. It’d be nice to have others though too. My husband has several that he wears and every once in awhile he wears one that reminds me of the beach. 🙂

I have a “wedding” perfume I only wore on the big day and the honeymoon. My husband loves it when I wear it from time time. Certainly very good advice! I want to try out these perfumes you listed! Hmmmm. But which one?!

Kate, love your advice about wearing a special perfume on your wedding day! I also love shopping at Ulta! Just an FYI about earning points there, I think they expire after a year, or at a certain time of year. So be careful and make sure to use your points before they expire! I could be wrong, and they may have changed their policy, but I think that is how it works.

Reply
Andrea Beenen says · 04.14.13

After you spend a certain amount in a year you reach a platinum level and your points won’t expire for another year … I reached platinum last November and that made my points safe. I’ve already surpassed the amount to hold my platinum status through to the end of 2014. Lol I’ve been hoarding my points 🙂

I need to try that! I love finding an amazing perfume. I can’t believe your Ulta doesn’t offer for you to use your points at checkout! Ours asks every time if I want to apply my points to my purchase. The points add up much quicker than you think so I just use them every time 🙂

That is really good adviabout getting a new scent for your wedding and only using it for special occassions. I am definitely one who remembers certain life situations based on smell. Like this “Aquarius” scent from Bath & Body Works that I bought in HS and wore to a semi-formal – that scent always reminded me of that night.

Light Blue is one of my regular scents. I also switch it up with Burberry Brit, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Kors, and Victoria’s Secret Heavenly. I also like Pink Sugar, for a cute cotton candy scent!

At Ulta, if you spend $350 a year – you become a Platinum member where your points never expire, and you get the opportunity to earn bonus points faster.

Some areas use points and some use the reward levels, where I live we use the reward levels not the points.

Reply
Kacie Jackson says · 03.08.13

Yes, that is the reward level – regular or Platinum. You earn 1 point for every dollar you spend at the regular level, and then once you’ve spent $350 or more per year, you then earn 1.25 points per dollar spent. You also earn special offers if you’ve got Platinum status. I am sure an employee at Ulta can do a better job at explaining the program better! 🙂

I spend my money equally between Ulta and Sephora, so I am Platinum status with Ulta, and a VIB at Sephora. Both have their own perks!

Reply
Nikki says · 03.08.13

Thanks for replying! If I had both an Ulta & a Sephora-I’d never have any money left! I am a makeup and hair product junkie. I’m asking the next time I go in. I currently have a level 4 reward coupon to use.

Reply
Suzanne Jung says · 03.08.13

When Ulta has the 20% off your entire purchase coupons, you CAN use that on fragrances. And most people know you can return used make up at Ulta but you can also return fragrances as well. If you think you’re going to like it but then it turns out you don’t, you can still return it.

The wedding day perfume is a great idea! I’ll have to remember that!! 🙂

The idea of having a special scent for your wedding is brilliant!

I’m bad about fragrances… I only wear ONE. That is my scent. A few years back I spent HOURS at the fragrance counter smelling because my ONE fragrance had been discontinued and narrowed it down to two. After wearing them I picked my new favorite Ed Hardy. If you met me, I am NOT an Ed Hardy girl but I LOVE their fragrance and I’m not looking forward to the day when I have to start my search again!

In the meantime, I need to find some perfumes to switch it up a little and will give these a try! Thanks so much!

I LOVE Ja’Dore and Ralph Lauren Romance. After my hubby and I got married I wore Victoria Secret Love Spell for months. I was SO surprised when years later a hair client bought me the Love Spell lotion for Christmas and he remembered!!! So now I keep a little around for date nights! Such a great idea about the wedding honeymoon. We are renewing our vows in Oct for our 10yr anniversary and having the wedding we never did, so now I know what I’m wearing!!

Kate,

I heard that same advice when I got married a few months ago. I am so glad I bit the bullet and bought a “wedding fragrance.” Whenever we go a on a big date now, I will spritz myself with the fragrance and it takes me back to that day. I love perfumes, but hate the big price tags. Thanks for showing so many options in many different price ranges. Have a great Friday!

I bought a special wedding day fragrance too, Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb. I didn’t wear perfume on a regular basis before then. When I was on the hunt for a wedding perfume there were so few I liked, and Flowerbomb was the only one I loved. So the problem now is that Flowerbomb isn’t just a special occasion perfume; I wear it pretty regularly. So much for that!

When I was in college a friend of mind said that every woman needs a signature scent. It was at that time I bought my first “Grown Up Perfume” – Estee Lauder Pleasures. I wore it for a few years, including the first few years I was married. I don’t wear it any more, but every time I smell it {or am able to get a sample of it!} I’m transported back to the time my husband and I started dating. I love your suggestion of bringing back your wedding scent – after 13 years of marriage, I think I’m going to do that! 🙂

Dolce & Gabana Light Blue – my new favorite! And I’m going to have to check out the Gucci scent – sounds wonderful!

My hubby and I both bought new scents for the wedding day/honeymoon. When one of us wears it, it instantly puts us right back to that special time. It’s a perfect idea for date nights. I’m so glad someone told me about that and I tell all my friends too!

I love this post! I kind of did this myself, accidentally. I’m not much of a perfume wearer, but my husband and I stayed at the Ritz in Naples, FL for part of our honeymoon and I loved the Bvlgari White Tea soaps and lotions. I still have a little bottle stashed away, and almost 6 years later it still takes me right back to that sweet time.

Love your blog Kate. I discovered it last summer when I was searching for an updo idea for a special occaision.

PS I too am very sensitive to many perfumes. One that I’ve had luck with for many years is Givenchy’s Amarige. Also Bath and Body Works Creamy Coconut is a great everyday scent for me (unfortunately you have to order it online though). Thought I’d pass this along.

I completely agree that J’Adore Dior is a strong scent. Have you ever tried Chanel #5? I feel like it is one of those iconic perfumes, like Dior, that everyone applauds but I just don’t think it smells very good! Chanel Chance is much lighter so I wonder if Dior has a similar version.

Love the tip about ULTA though! I am always shocked by Sephora’s prices!

In May I went to an event at Saks 5th Ave & got some samples of Bond No. 9 & fell in love. No nausea!! They use higher concentration of oils not alcohols. You should seek them out at a local Saks or if ever in Manhattan, find a shop (they’ll stock you so well with freebies you’ll be hooked too!) http://www.bondno9.com/

It wasn’t my wedding day, as I’m not even married but I wore Ralph Lauren Romance on a date with my now, long term boyfriend and it just so happened, that THAT date was a turning point in our relationship.

I rarely wear Romance now except for special occasions or date night. Whenever I do, my boyfriend always comments on how amazing I smell. It’s a silent acknowledgement that THIS night is about us and is special in its own way, bringing us back to that turning point in our relationship and grounding us again in love.

Fragrances are very special to me. I still haven’t washed my late husband’s robe just because the smell of his cologne still lingers. Just having come back from Paris (I have friends and visit there on occasion), having your fragrance blended for you is a special treat and, if you ever get the chance, give it a try. They have the most beautiful perfumes and I bought two new ones that are worth a try and I believe you can order online: Annick Gutal “Grand Amour” and any made by l’Artisan. Go to Fragonard to have yours blended.

When the bottles are empty they are the best sachets – just throw them in your drawers/closet/bathroom drawer.

Don’t forget to keep your precious scents in a dark place or velvet bag and never in the sun. Enjoy!!!!

I love J’adore Dior, but probably because I wear tiny amounts in general, so it never feels overpowering – one perfume bottle lasts me years (literally). Be careful here nobody can help you here or even suggest how you can get your ex or love back, any testimonies of most spell caster here must be ignore.because most of them are scam i mean real scam which i was a victim and i got ripped of thousands of dollars because i was so anxious to get my wife back after she left me for over 2 years with my 7 years old son jerry,i have applied to 7 different spell caster here and all to no avail they all ask for same thing send your name your ex name address and picture phone number etc which i did over and over again and most of them were from west Africa until i saw a post about mama Anita spell and i decided to gave her my last trail.she ask me four things my real name,my ex and my ex mother name and $180 and said my ex will come back in 24hours, i have paid over $3000 on spell casting and courier and nothing have work for me after 3 days i was thinking about how much i have lost so far so i said let me give her a try so i called her again and send my real name,my ex and my ex mother name and the $180 because i swear it was my last try so i was waiting as she told me to wait till next day and i could not sleep that night because i really love my wife and want her back at 9pm that day i saw my wife on line on face book and she said hi at first i was shock because she never talk with me for the past a year and 9 month now i did not reply again she said are you there? i quickly reply yes and she said can we see tomorrow i said yes and she went off-line i was confused i try to chat her again but she was no more on line i could not sleep that night as i was wondering what she is going to say, by 7.am the next morning she gave me a miss call i decided not to call back as i was still on shock again she call and i pick she said can we see after work today i said yes so she end the call immediately i got off work she call me and we meet and now we are back again i call mama anita the next day thanking her for what she has done in fact i still call her and thank her as my life was not complete without my wife please be careful here i have been scam thousands of dollars if you want a true love spell then contact mama Anita ([email protected])
