May Birchbox

My May Birchbox arrived last week!
This month, similar to a few months ago when Teen Vogue curated a box, the box was inspired by the show Gossip Girl on the CW. I don’t watch it, but I was curious to see what was in the box anyway.

The Miss Dior perfume smelled good, although I tend to prefer fruity perfumes. The Dior Extase mascara was great. It darkened and thickened up my lashes with only a few swipes! It may be a little heavy for daily use, but it’s great for impact.
I’m excited to give that Shu Uemura Cleasning Oil Shampoo a try. I’m sure my hair would feel wonderful after using it–since it would be so soft and moisturized. It would especially be great to use after a day in the sun!
I also managed to get a slight sun-burn yesterday at the pool (I’m on vacation this week!) regardless of the fact that I’m super strict about covering my body in a high SPF. I blame it on Kelle Hampton’s book Bloom. I was completely sucked in and could not stop reading. So, I probably stayed out too long. Anyway, I’m looking forward to trying the Miracle Skin Transformer after my sun burn goes away. It comes either un-tinted or tinted. The tinted version would be great for applying to your dΓ©colletΓ© when wearing a strapless dress. It will even out your skin tone and add a little moisture as well.
Lastly, they included little notecards that were based on Gossip Girl’s ever-present phrase “xoxo” at the beginning of the episodes. Cute for a little gift for a girlfriend.

I always enjoy seeing what comes in my Birchbox each month! If you are interested in learning more, click here!

Is everyones box the same?? My Gossip Girl box did not contain what yours does…

No, the boxes differ, depending on how you fill out your profile.

Reply
Anonymous says · 05.17.12

right… our “profile” notice how certain, high profile folks like well known bloggers who feature Birch Box get “good” stuff. I bet you none of them got Laundry Soap last month…

lol
I thought I was the only one who got the laundry soap.
RIP OFF
I have cancelled.

I got mine last week and I was SO excited! I got a really pretty gold glitter nail polish which I LOVE and shampoo and conditioner that I’ve used up already!

I was SO disappointed in my box this month. I was planning on letting this months box help me decide weather or not to cancel and it put me over the edge. I got boxes for 8 months and were only truly happy with about half of them. Great concept, just not enough of a variety in the boxes. Every month I got a tiny perfume sample. Maybe i’ll try again in a few months.

I agree. I’ve been getting boxes for 3 months and nothing useful yet. This month was particularly bad.

Maybe you need to redo your profile.

I really enjoyed my box this month…all except for the gold glitter liquid eyeliner…I can’t figure out what it is in my profile that flags them that that is a good product for me! hahahaha! Other than that I got an orange hair tie (which I didn’t think would hold well, but it does and I really love it), Ojon conditioner that I got 3 uses out of and now love, the XOXO notecard (mine was purple and I used it to write an “I missed you” love note to my boyfriend who got home from visiting family in California last night…yaaaay!), and a Bulgaria perfume that I’m testing out today and like so far. It always seems like just when I start to entertain the thought of cancelling my membership because I don’t get anything interesting, they send a great box πŸ™‚

Anyway, love your blog(and your sister’s too!)!! Ya’ll keep up the good work!

I got the same things you did. I absolutely loved the “Twistband” hair tie. It holds just as tight as an elastic but looks better and doesn’t feel tight. I also loved the conditioner. I loved the Bvlgari perfume and I loved the gold glitter eyeliner. πŸ˜‰ It’s kind of a clear gold-ish if you haven’t tried it yet.

Got the same thing ladies. And I too love my twistband hair tie. I got green eyeliner instead of gold. πŸ™‚

I got the same! I was so happy to finally get a Twistband. I LOVE it. Wearing it right now! I got an orange one.
I’m going to try to eyeliner tomorrow night, the hubby and I are having a date night.

My box was pretty awesome (and it was my first). I got the tinted lip balm (which is the best I’ve used in some time), a fabric hair tie, gold glitter nail polish, a perfume sample (a very nice, vanilla scent) and a notecard. Pretty happy overall.

Hi Kate! This is kind of a random question, but I was wondering what kind of shampoo and conditioner you’d recommend for frizzy and poofy hair?

Reply
Sarah says · 05.16.12

We got the same box! I tried the Shu Umera shampoo and it’s AMAZING!!! I’ve never smelled anything so good in my life and my hair after I used was so smooth and had so much volume! It’s probably the first product that I’m actually going to buy the full size version of!
Here’s my review of the box! πŸ™‚

last month I got some orange lipstick…I don’t wear orange and have no idea where that came from…looking for someone to use it. This month’s selection was great! I guess it can be a hit or miss…most of mine are spot on, though.

Party of Ten says · 05.16.12

My box had all of the same items except for the mascara I got a glittery brown eye liner. I actually wore it this week-end (and I rarely wear eye liner), and I liked it! The smell of the shampoo was very nice, although I had to use almost the whole sample for my thick hair, but I am used to that πŸ˜‰ The perfume was heavy, but it’s good for a week-end scent, not every day. The skin transformer was interesting, not something that I was used to, but it did give a nice tint.

Wow, you got a totally different box than me! I got the stila liquid eyeliner in blue, kerastase shampoo, conditioner and leave in oil (all were AWESOME) and the gold metallic nail polish. The gold nail polish actually matches one of my kate spade bags to a T– which is kind of hilarious. I love birchbox!

Thanks for posting what you get every month! I love seeing if I got the same thing or if you got something different and liked it. I know people like to complain, but the anticipation/excitement of opening it up and trying out new stuff is well worth the $10 even if some of the items end up being duds.

I wasn’t thrilled with mine either. I did get the nailpolish though which was nice. I was really hoping for the liquid eyeliner πŸ™

I’ve gotten 3 Birchboxes so far – and my May box was the BEST! All different products than you, but I was so pleased!…I’d been on the fence about keeping it, and have discovered it almost pays for itself.

All those unhappy – are you reviewing all your products for points? If you review the products in your box, you get 10 points for each review – at least 50 points a month and 100 points = 10 dollars! I just used 2 months of points to cash in on a fresh Sugar lip balm, paying just $2.50 ($22.50 retails)for it because I had so many points saved up. You also get 1 point for every dollar spent.

It’s definitely helped sway me into keeping it going.

I hadn’t been too in love with the boxes I’ve got until this month’s Gossip Girl box – need to start using it (and review stuff like the above person mentioned – great idea). I also need to pick up that Bloom book – – I’m a mother of a 6 year old boy with Down syndrome so her blog has very much resonated with me and I enjoy seeing her sweet Nella grow up.

How do you review your products? I haven’t figured that out yet, so any advice would be great! Do they send you links or do you need to go on your profile?

Reply
Scoutgirl says · 05.17.12

if you go on Birchbox’s website and login you can click on the tab that says “Box” and it shows all the items in this month’s box (and past boxes are at the bottom). You can then click on any of the items on that page and when you are on the page for each individual item you’ll see a link that says “leave feedback” near the button to buy the item. This link only shows up on items that you’ve received in a past box. It’s a must do as you get 10 points for each review, 100 points = $10 so basically you basically get $10 back every couple months!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my birchbox!! I heard about it from your blog and now I am addicted! I also got my two best friends and my mother hooked as well!

It really is all about your profile! I really thought about mine while filling it out and have yet to be disappointed. The only problem I have is that I want bigger samples so im not so afraid to use them haha. I keep wanting to save them all!

The dior mascara you got sounds great!

This months box was awesome. I am always on the search for the perfect mascara and the Dior mascara is great. I also got some high end facial cream. It is a very large sample size. I got the Kerastase shampoo and conditioner. They smell so good and are a nice upgrade from the Suave I usually use. I thought the note card was cute and will totally use it to wright a lovenote to my hubby. The only thing I didn’t like was the perfume but I hate all perfumes.

I got a completely different box: old lady perfume, brush cleanser, AMAZING Dr. Jart 4 in one foundation/tinted moisturizer, a hair band, and gold nail polish.
http://domestiquegoddess.blogspot.com/2012/05/may-birchbox.html

I really really want to try some new mascaras, though. I thought this box was better than last month’s, maybe, but I could have done without the old lady perfume. I’m not nearly old enough to get old lady perfume!

Reply
Katie says · 05.17.12

I agree about the old lady perfume! I didn’t get the nail polish but I got a Stila liquid gold eyeliner.

Reply
lexsmama says · 05.18.12

I got the same thing. The perfume is strong, but it’s nice on one of my friends. πŸ™‚ It was one of my better boxes so far. The Dr. Jart worked super well on my skin.

Hey, did anyone try the laundry soap? I got it in my first box, back in February, and it worked really well. I was disappointed in the stuff, and was planning on canceling this month, but it’s worth the little wait so the profile gets some use. Just remember– it’s a sample box. πŸ™‚

I received my first box and was a little disappointed. I would have loved the mascara and hair tie; instead I got a sample of shampoo/conditioner, another hair product, face cream and coral nail polish. About the only thing I liked was the polish. I’m going to try it one more month. I was excited to open it though!

I’m a newbie too and I also got the same box. I loved it though. So far i’ve only tried the coral polish and the face cream, but those and the fun of opening the box were well worth the $10 to me.

This was my favorite Birchbox I’ve received (and I basically love them all since the fun is in trying new things, plus you nearly get your money back with the points you earn from doing reviews). I received a yellow Twistband headband, Dr. Jart+ BB Cream, Color Club gold nail polish, Arquiste L’Etrog fragrance (pricy but elegant scent) and Beauty Blender brush & Blender cleanser. I thought it lived up to the Gossip Girl image well and I will be purchasing some full sized items from this box.

Reply
RachelWiseman says · 05.17.12

This was my first Birchbox! I got L’Etrog perfume, gold nail polish, Beauty blender cleaner, an army green headband, and DuJart+ Beauty Balm. The twistband headband cost them about a penny to make! I have a small head, and it was too small for me! The ends started fraying right away! My biggest complaint though…the DuJart+ Beauty Balm! After reading all of the positive comments on it I was excited I received it, but when I opened it, the tube was nearly empty! There’s not enough to use anywhere :/ I did like the Nail polish and perfume, and haven’t tried the brush cleaner yet.

LauraCaffeine says · 05.17.12

I also received the DrJart+ beauty balm and there was about 1 mL in there…didn’t even cover a cheek! I was really excited about it, too! I loved everything else in my box.

If there is a way that a Birchbox can make someone feel old, then I instantly aged 10 years! Kerastase shampoo and hair mask for MATURE hair? Algenist Firming & Lifting Cream? Hello, I’m not 50! At first I thought the Miss Dior perfume smelled old-lady-ish, but I gave it a try and I’m so glad I did. It’s one of the few perfumes that “gets along” with my skin! (and my hubby loves it) I’m on the fence about my subscription, but I’ve signed up for Glossybox this month. Lets see how it compares!
