I’m a sucker for trying new products. Whether for hair, skin or nails–I always like to try new things. Along the way I’ve discovered some all-time favorites that work wonderfully for my skin.
My skin is a combination of dry and oily. Most of the dryness is around my nose and on my forehead. And the oily areas are mainly my chin and center of the forehead.
So I aim for products for dry skin, and for acne-prone/oily skin.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Do you like my tray? I got it at Target. And one side was slightly bent so they gave me 5% off. I know. . .MAJOR discount. But I took it.

Olay Regenerist Serum. I sort of forgot about how great this product is. I stopped using it for a few weeks and replaced it with my Hope In a Jar Moisturizer during the day. However, I discovered that the Regenerist serum is great for daytime and I like Hope in a Jar for nighttime.
This revolutionary product changed the way my under eye concealer goes on. And stays on. I can’t say enough great things about it.

Hope in a Jar (for dry skin) is a great, deep moisturizer. It’s slightly heavy, but not too thick. Definitely great for dry skin. I also like the regular Hope in a Jar.

This is a semi-new product for me as I have been trying to battle breakouts on my chin. It’s worked really well to fight off blemishes!

Truly a non-greasy eye cream. And I love that it has SPF since the skin around the eye is so delicate!

If I had to choose only 1 of these products to take with me to a deserted island, it would be the Sephora Wrinkle Filler. I mean, I can’t get over how great the product is. It could also, maybe, be used as a concentrated “primer” around your nose–where makeup may settle into creases.

I’m also a big fan of the Oil of Olay Regenerist serum! However, I prefer the Serum with SPF 15 for extra protection. I’m going to have to try the Sephora wrinkle filler. Thanks for the suggestion! πŸ™‚

I’ve wanted to try Hope In a Jar, but I have lots of breakouts and am afraid it’ll break me out. Get it? lol. I need to use a moisturizer because I’m, gasp!39!

Ha! I’m a Philosophy addict too! I have always had problems with dry skin (especially during the winters, even here in NC!) and the hope in a jar has been the only thing that works without making the rest of my face too greasy!

(also, I voted for your nail polish color! It truly was my favorite out of the 12!!)

I really like the Hope in a Jar too. However, I have had some dry spots in the winter. A salesperson at Clinque told me that it was not a good moisturizer!! Maybe I need to dry the dry version??

How much does the Purity facial cleanser generally cost? I use a lot of cleanser and am thinking about switching types but don’t want to be paying a bookoodale amount every time πŸ™‚ I know it is a fav of yours!!

I just recently purchased the Purity facial cleanser, hoping that it will help me with my brake outs, but I think it might not be good my skin. I believe it made my breakouts worst. I may have to try something else. I am interested in trying out the Oil of Olay Regenerist serum. Will look for it next time I go shopping. Thanks for the post.

Funny, I just bought purity, philosophy’s exfoliater and hope in a jar yesterday. Because of your post on birchbox and I have the same skin type as you. I received Origins checks and balances in my birchbox last month but it’s a little too steep for me to buy the full products,, although I loved it! Your blog is great btw and it’s a nice break from children in my day!

I share so many of those faves.

Have you tried the Microdelivery face wash from philsophy? That’s my morning cleanser with the purity at night – gracious that stuff just melts off makeup.

LOVE Mircodelivery. I forgot to mention that here. That’s in my shower.

In highschool I got a sample of the olay regenerist serum & it lasted me FOREVER! I loved it & I recently tried it again because my face gets shiny by the end of the day…. and I totally forgot how awesome it was! And the tiny bottle goes such a long way!

I just bought that exact same tray two weeks ago at Target. I was looking for something pretty to place on the dresser for my husband to put his things in at the end of the day. You know…watch, wedding band, billfold, etc. I love it! I did place 3 little pads on the bottom of it to be sure it doesn’t scratch the dresser. I am definitely going to purchase the Sephora wrinkle filler. Thanks for the tip!

I have the same problem with breakouts on my chin but I have really dry skin. Do you feel like the “On a Clear Day” dries your skin out at all? My skin has changed so much since I turned 30 and I can’t seem to find the right combination of products.

Hi Kate! Can you tell us more about Olay Regenerist Serum? I’ve never tried it. What do you love about it?

I recently fell madly in love with a new daily moisturizer with SPF. I’ve had SO MUCH TROUBLE finding one I like! They’re either greasy or smelly, some sting(!), and another made me break out(!!). So right now I’m using one by Devita. It’s AMAZING. It’s rated CRAZY HIGH as far as sun protection and safety for use (not too many scary chemicals), and it feels like heaven on my skin. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q8R7KW/ref=oh_o02_s00_i00_details

Live your blog! Question though….I just bought the Sephora wrinkle filler, and just tried this morning. Do you wait before covering with concealer? I didn’t, and I am wondering if that is why I didn’t notice a difference with it. Thanks for all your info!

Kate says · 02.13.12

I suppose I wait about a minute. But I don’t think that will really change anything.

i love your blog. Great stuff.

I have to suggest you try Argan Cleansing Oil by Josie Maran. I promise I have no ties to the company. In December Sephora had a sale on the Josie Maran products and I bought the cleansing oil and the 100% argan oil that can be used as lotion. I am some what of a product whore. I have to say argan oil has totally changed both my skin, and my ideas of what you need to clean your face. Just by washing my face with oil (I know it sounds crazy) I have had to wash my hair a quarter to half as much as I had to. My hair stylist evem noticed a difference in the texture of my hair. Washing in general is cut in half. The best part is my skin is so smooth and radiant. Previously I was someone who exfoliated, washed, and used eye cream daily. And with all of that care never had the skin I really wanted. I now swear by this stuff! Its not the cheapest initially, but you also use soo little that in the long run its not expensive.

The best part is, my life feels simplified. If I go on a trip I don’t have to lug around all this product. Just 2 small bottles.

ALSO I haven’t tried the Moroccanoil Hair care line yet. This is only in regards to Josie Maran skin care products.

Your blogs are awesome. My go to product for zits is Mario Badescu’s Drying lotion. This is the best pimple buster I have ever tried. I get results overnight. I am never without it. Hoping they make a travel size soon.

I see two eye creams here. How do you use each one? There’s the wrinkle filler that you would use in the morning before putting on makeup, but then there’s the mark eye cream with spf. Do you also use that in the day, or at night? Is the wrinkle filler only for the under eye area?

I have the same skin issues and discovered Serious Skincare on HSN with Glycolic acid…it is wonderful. You will want to work your way up to using it everyday. I’ve been using it for about a year and Love it!!
PS I really have enjoyed all your tutorials!!
Thank you–
