How to use a Powder Texturizer

next
Truth Serum
Powder Texturizers.

Basically, it’s a dry powder that you tap into dry hair to create the feeling of texture to encourage lift and fullness. It is not the same as dry shampoo. It may absorb some oil and help your hair lift on day 2, but it won’t be as effective as a dry shampoo would be. It feels a lot like finely ground up chalk. It is completely invisible and can work on any hair color.

The finer, more limp the hair, the better. If you already have thick hair, or don’t need extra help with lift or fullness, then this product isn’t really for you. I have found that it’s best on baby fine, or just fine/thin hair.

A little goes a long long long way. So if you do try this product, always start conservatively, and add more as you feel you need it. This is also the kind of product that doesn’t go away until you wash your hair. It won’t disappear half way through the day–which is great if you love it, but not so great if you don’t like the feeling of it.

A few of my favorite versions of this product are:
Osis Dust it, Lanza Powder Up, and Big Sexy Hair Powder Play

All of these are pretty much the same. I like Big Sexy Hair most for it’s price and the fact that it comes out of the top easily. No clogging!

Here is how I use a powder texturizer:

*you may hear me say “powder up” in the video and that is the name for the Lanza powder texturizer. It’s what I’ve been using at the salon lately, so it’s on the brain! 😉

I actually have the Big Sexy Hair one. I find I actually does not work well when I use it. When my hairdresser does it, it works great. Not so much at home. I am not sure it I am using too much, not enough or what. But I do not get all day lift, falls half way through the day and then starts to feel greasy.

I have tried to use it a couple of times and I am not a big fan of the way it makes my hair feel.I am kinda weird that way. It looks like it works well with your hair! I love your hair!

I cannot LIVE without Dust It. I have used it for years on my bangs, that seem to feel the need to separate five minutes after I finish doing my hair. Works wonders for limp hair ladies like myself!

I have been using this stuff for a while now, and I have searched on You Tube for a demonstration video, because I was never quite sure if I was “doing it right!” Sadly, I never found a video that was very helpful until today! Yay! And thank you! (And, for the record, I was “pretty much” doing it right!) I found your blog, quite by accident, about a month ago, and I’ve been stalking it, trying to recreate fancy hair styles, ever since. The problem is that my spiritual gift is NOT recreating fancy hair styles, so I sometimes bomb them… but every now and then I get one of your styles to put me on the red carpet! I love your blog… I just wish you lived next door to me, so that I could run over in the mornings with a completely destroyed head of hair and holler out, “Hey, neighbor! I just knotted my hair up trying to do that fancy side braid that you turned into a messy bun! Help me! I’ll make us coffee!” Yes, I’m fairly certain it would be quite helpful if you lived next door!

I have had some of the oasis in my bathroom cabinet for 6 mnths +. I was never able to recreate the use of it the way my stylist did. I also didn’t like the way it made my hair feel at the roots, but I love your idea of using it to separate and define curls… definitely going to give that a try!

I was introduced to Big Sexy Hair Powder Play by my hair stylist and that stuff rocks!! It gives great volume and even last overnight until the next day. I highly recommend it.

I have used osis and just tried schwarzkopf got2be powderful. It is the same thing and so much cheaper since you can buy it at Wal-Mart!! Thanks for the how-to. I just sprinkled it on top and now I know to do it underneath. LOVE it! Don’t need hairspray anymore and this works so much better. Thanks so much!!!

Thank you SO much for this!!! My stylist used some on my hair a few weeks ago and I liked it so I bought some. And I’ve never used it. I was totally intimidated and scoured the web looking for a tutorial with no luck. I cannot thank you enough!!!

Hi Kate! What do you recommend for a dry shampoo? I have tried several brands but have not found one that I am 100% fine with yet. Thanks!

Hi Kate! I just found your blog and I am so very glad that I did! I love your easy-to-follow tutorials! I really want bangs like yours. However, I have a cowlick and I am afraid getting more bangs than I have will be a disaster. What do you suggest for people who have cowlicks but want bangs? – Dreama

Reply
Nicki says · 07.16.16

Try longish side swept bangs going with the movement of the cowlick. Styling will be very easy and not take much product working With the natural curves.

Thanks for the tips! I already have Powder Play and absolutely love it!

@Dreama: Unfortunately, you should probably stay away from bangs. But try a longer side swept “bang” that hits your chin! That way you have the shorter lengths in front, without bangs that keep popping up!

I used the powder up earlier today on a cut and style out….i loved it! but i was wondering, have you seen the new candy line by bed head? we had a hair show & she showed us alot of the products, but the wax with the whip cream looking top on it caught my eye today, didnt get a chance to use it though….would you suggest that to any of your clients?

I LOVE dust it, especially for my bangs. Keeps them in place (way better than hairspray) and keeps them from getting greasy!

I guess, I just don’t use the right products. Thank you so much for sharing. Found all three products on Amazon. Will get one soon!!!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for posting this video. My mother-in-law bought me some of the Big Sexy Hair powder several months back and I never knew if I was applying/using it right. This video is so helpful!! I love your tutorials. If fact I would love to see one (or information) on how to best use a blow dryer with a diffuser, concentrator and/or without anything. Like when it is best to use the attachments or leave them off and what techniques work best.

Good news!!! got2b is made by Schwarzkopf, the same company that makes Osis! You can pick it up at Walgreens for $6! Silica powder is the BEST!!!! It also helps hair hold curl if you put in a little before you curl it. My mom has short thick hair that doesnt hold style, but I had her try it one day and she loved it because she could run her fingers in it to mess it back up when it fell and it would stay without having to use more hairspray.

Nicole @ Haute Runner says · 04.18.12

Wow!! Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have had Osis for 2 years and I barely used it because I disliked the gunky feeling in my hair and didn’t know how to use it properly. I used this tutorial and your ponytail tutorial to do my day-old hair (also used hot rollers for volume since I have straightish fine hair) and I am hooked! I am so glad I can use a product I already own! I am so disappointed that Aquage isn’t sold in Canada 🙁 Can you recommend another foaming volumizer that you like 2nd best?

pyewacket60 says · 02.09.14

These products don’t work for me UNLESS I use them this way: Sprinkle some of the powder on my finger tips, rub hands together, push the product into the roots of my hair. If I sprinkle the product directly on my roots, I have a hot mess. Takes very little product the way I use it; it can be reapplied during the day without the sticky/gummy feel you get when you put the product directly from the container onto the roots.

I use plain corn starch and a blush brush and put it on my roots. Corn starch is known to make food thicker and it also makes my fine hair thicker.

I never realized how thin my hair was till my stylist used this one me. I have never teased my hair before or understood lift (cept when i was in high school in late 870’s and we had conair hot rollers. slept in them a few nights ouch!)

it finally clicked last night what texture was on hair, and how some other girls / women can go days without shampooing and it looked beautiful.

now i know what it is to live with fine hair, and how normal and coarse hair feels different and styles different. love this stuff! its a whole new world to me to be able to have body and not wear my hair in a pony tail , straight down, or sleep in huge hot rollers (or the foam pink ones when i was a kid for curl the next day)

I have a question. Can the big sexy hair powder play be used on wet hair or it has to be dry hair? Also, what happens if it is used on wet hair?

Reply
Kate says · 05.03.17

I would only use on dry hair, it may be too hard to work with on wet hair!
